I didn't know that Kap...
Roloand? Like ROLAND OF GILEAD? It’s perfect. No more “Champ” for me, my favorite corner is ROLAND BAILEY of GILEAD!

To the Dark TOWER!!!!
There they stood, ranged along the hill-sides, met
To view the last of me, a living frame
For one more picture! in a sheet of flame
I saw them and I knew them all. And yet
Dauntless the slug-horn to my lips I set,
And blew. ``Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came.’’

I don't know a thing about the Denver Athletic Club
They may indeed be a fine stand-up outfit and Champ certainly seems a worthy recipient of an award. Doling out no-cost honors, however, has a rich tradition among organizartions of questionable legitimacy, who wish to entice big name VIPs to provide the draw factor to their menanigless events for free.
A simple "Good job"
would have been a lot less depressing.

Champ is honored...
Every time he looks in the mirror.
Seriously, I was at DIA once and saw him there, getting mobbed. He patiently signed every autograph while he waited for his flight and after everyone went away and we were about to board (we were on the same flight) I walked up to him and stuck out my hand. I think he was expecting me to ask for an autograph, but I just shook his hand and told him what a big fan I was of him, and that I was a Broncos fan no matter what – win lose or draw.
This was right before the 2008 season started and I have to say, he just smiled warmly and sincerely and said “You know what, that’s what I like to hear, thanks so much.”
And he really, really meant it. I’ve met a lot of pro ball players and had a lot longer conversations with many of them but its been a long time since I’ve ever felt that much sincerity from one. He seemed genuinely touched that I waited all that time not for an autograph but just to show my support and it really did seem to mean something to him.
Bona fide stars like Champ meet a zillion people and sign a lot of autographs, give a lot of interviews, but this guy really seems to appreciate what he does for a living, what it means to fans, and what an impact he has on people. It isn’t easy to accept celebrity when you probably just got into the business to play the game you love, but it is in inevitable part of the deal when you’re a superstar and he handles it with tons of grace and class.
Not everyone does.
It really was a great moment. There are more guys like that in the NFL than you think, but certainly not enough. It’s a real treat to have him on our team and to watch him play. I’ll sure miss him when he’s gone.
Why hate on your OWN team when you've got the Raiders?

Thanks for sharing
That is great to hear, that’s kind of the way I felt about Rod Smith, when I saw him at DIA once. But I didn’t say anything to him, because I didn’t want to be responsible for a bunch of other people mobbing him. I think part of it was just sheer disbelief, that I had such an opportunity to voice my gratitude, and I squandered that chance.
I’m glad you and Champ shared that experience and you let Us know about it.
Way to lead by example TM! ;-J
No mobbin’ for a signature, just to voice respect, appreciation and humanity.

When I was in High School
I worked as a valet at Castle Pines Golf Club where Dan Reeves was a member.
Every time he came in, the rest of the staff mobbed on him and just pestered him. I would just address him by name, call him “sir” (just like any other member).
One day he came in with a box full of the dark blue wool baseball caps with orange Denver Broncos script on it (that was popular in the early 80’s) and as I helped him get the box out of his trunk he asked if I wanted one (of course I did).
I was the only staff member that got one of the hats. I’d still be wearing it today if the moths hadn’t got a hold of it and chewed holes in it!

Holy crap Jason Elam was athlete of the year?
Jason was a mac daddy but was the year in Colorado sports REALLY that rough? Snap.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.
And congrats Champ <3

Elam makes total sense
Tied for longest kick in NFL history and pretty much Mr. Automatic. I’m mostly shocked that the Snake slithered his way in there.
