MHR Grab-Bag: Dez, Ted Bartlett, and 1st Round Rookies
There exist some subjects in need of analysis and discussion. The topics are varied as the fans on this site.
I notice that no fanshot has been posted regarding Dez Bryant's recent antics. It seems Mr. Bryant refused to carry "#1" Roy Williams' pads in from practice. While I agree it's stupid to have the guy carry another players' pads on a pro team, I also think that rookie initiations, hazing, etc. are fine, and Dez is showing his contrarian nature by doing this. I believe this will be indicative of future issues. Enjoy your fancy WR, Dallas. What do you think, MHR?
Can anyone tell me what happened to Ted Bartlett? I really enjoyed his insights, and the debates between him and others on this site. When he struck out on his own to form SmarterFans, I checked in from time to time. Sadly, his last update was a mock draft, and I've heard nothing from him since. He seemed stalwart in his resolve to make SmarterFans a great site for football knowledge, and abandoning the dream seems contrary to his style. If anyone knows what's going on, I'm curious. If it's none of my business, give Ted my best.
I have heard rumors that the Broncos are trying to sign our 1st round rookies by training camp so they are there the whole time. I believe that to be true, but my question is: Why would Tebow or Thomas hold out of Rookie TC? Would they really? We drafted them. Wouldn't holding out just drive their value down? Especially in light of the way Doom was rewarded for playing the game the right way, does anyone really see Thomas, or ESPECIALLY Tebow holding out? Just curious...
I miss Horvil Tiki. Can I get an Amen? The blowhard running that site now annoys me. I guess controversey sells, though. I keep going back... mainly just to see if that nonsense-talking South Pacific Islander has posted anything. I don't know why I liked the guy so much. He's just funny to me.
What do you think about the Redskins? Will Shanahan be redeemed? Did he learn from being fired? I think so. I think he never would have been as good again, but when Bowlen shocked him, he went back to school, modernized, and got a valuable change of scenery. I think the Redskins will do well over the next few years. McNabb under Shanny reminds me of Elway under Shanny: agin excellent QB who's never won the big game. Just a hunch. I still don't know if I'll root for him or the 'skins yet.
This is an open discussion thread. Feel free to hijack it. Thanks!

Ted is sorely missed at MHR. His Tuesday Shallow Thoughts columns were must reads.

You guys had some great discussions.
I waited weekly for you two to disagree so I could learn something.

Ted is off chasin' tail and enjoying life.
I think he expected his SmarterFans website to be an instant success….most people don’t realize how much dedication and hard work it takes to build a successful blog.
Which is probably why there are literally tens of millions of blogs…yet only a tenth of 1% of them would be considered successful.

Dez should be carrying pads...just not Roy's.
Roy is so bad he should be carrying pads too.

I think there could be holdouts even from the second round.
I just don’t understand how this is a reflection of the player. The negotiations are between the agent and the team. Did it reflect poorly on Moreno or Ayers as players? How is it hypocritical if Tebow is a ‘holdout’ and not for the other 30 first round players that haven’t signed?
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

I see ow you get that from what I said.
But I just don’t get why a player wouldn’t want to play. Why would he hold out? If it’s between the agent and the team, why wouldn’t the player play? He was drafted… so the team wants him. I would just think a player would be more valuable to a team if he attended team activities. He doesn’t have to sign an unacceptable contract. I would think a player would at least want to be fully prepared to play. If the contract isn’t done by the first game, and the player isn’t being paid to play, then he shouldn’t play. I would think involving the player in a game plan would strengthen the player’s hand.
I’m just trying to figure it out. I don’t think Tebow would be a hypocrite, but I would be surprised if a guy with his personality held out.

We will enjoy the presence of DT and forget about Dez!
Shanny will do his thing as always, he is under the scope again…
I was surprised nobody talked about Dez til this
He is a rookie and that is what rookies do. Since he won’t carry the pads, I am sure they will stick him with a HUGE restaurant bill somewhere down the line…HAHA!
On the draft picks, I am sure the will try to get things ironed out ASAP, however it can be a process so hopefully it won’t take to long. Decker signed, so the dominos continue to fall.
Shanahan will be an interesting one and I will keep an eye on the Redskins from time to time to see how he does.

I miss Horvil too Harv.
I think Shanny’s offense will do OK, but trying to go to the 3-4 with that defense is going to hurt his record, IMO. I guess we’ll see if he has anything left.

I believe it's a rite of passage
and I’m also glad we went with Demaryius. Their personalities are like night and day. Dez seems very arrogant to me, whereas Demaryius seems very humble. There is no doubt in my mind that McDaniels made the right decision for our team.

Agreed! Dez is a knucklehead who will make unbelievable plays, but do immature things off the field.

Any chance
that Horvil and P.P. are the same person? I don’t mean to be cynical but this is the internet….can’t be too sure who anyone really is.
I agree. Of course the thought has crossed my mind.
I think the guy comes up with these personalities as a gimmick. Hey, it works. Apparently he’s getting more traffic as an a-hole than he did with Horvil. Oh, well. It’s rubbernecker syndrome, I guess. His new persona is irritating and vile, but I see him in a sort of Andy Kaufman-type character – intriguing through shock.
I still like Horvil way better. I’d visit the site more often if Horvil were back.

I miss the Tiki too....
though the dufus that runs the site now was probably Horvil the whole time. The “missing dog” was the biggest key that it was all a sham.

Horvil Tiki is PP Dublinski
Or I should say that the same guy writes as both characters. I think he just got tired of doing pidgin all the time and wanted to do a little more in-depth analysis.
Unfortunately, while Horvil Tiki is unique in the sports blogosphere, you don’t have to go far to find a cranky guy who posts about the Broncos. My hope is that he’ll be back once the season rolls around.
I did like Dublinski’s “Huckdort” counter for Jay Cutler, though, and the way he calls out Woody “Numbnuts” Paige.

I miss Tiki too (remember norf turnip? lol!). PP Dublinski definitely has a shtick but he’s also pretty right on- all the way back to Shanny’s departure, then Cutler, then Marshall. I also think his take on Tebow will prove out.

1) I think hazing is stupid in general and stand by my belief that Bryant will be a vindicated star sooner rather than later.
2) Ted’s a great writer and I was sad to see him go; it’s a shame SmarterFans doesn’t seem to have worked.
3) I fully expect Tebow to sign before TC and hope Thomas does the same; it’s disturbing that this hasn’t happened yet.
4) Horvil Tiki was the single funniest member of any site ever and I miss him, too!
5) I think the NFC East is tough and I don’t believe the Redskins are playoff bound; too many changes…

I’m still not ready to call Dez a diva (full disclosure, I defended him as misunderstood durting the draft process). As easy as it is for me to say we don’t know if there was attitute from Williams, how it went down, etc.. It’s probably even easier for Bronco fans to jump on a receiver that the Broncos passed on.
Should Bryant be carrying Williams’ pads, though? Absolutely. He should be carrying every receiver’s pads now – and their safeties should lay the wood every chance they get. And Wade Phillips should have got on Bryant’s case.
As I said, I’m not ready to call Bryant a diva just yet. But it’s certainly a mistake. The way mistakes like that get corrected and never repeated… is to punish him (perhaps outside the offical book) in this case. Teach him he is a rookie by treating him like a rookie… not an all-pro like Phillips has done.

I liked his articles too, but when you talk sh*t the way he did, you need to produce. And he didn’t. His site is a joke.
That's true.

I read some discussions about going to a 3-4 defense on the SB Redskins site about 6 months ago.
Most were not in favor of moving to that alignment. I haven’t gone back since. I would be surprised to see that alignment work very well for them. Were Albert H willing to play the nose, it would change things a bit.
Thanks, Harv.
Dez will bring back the “white house” (of Cowboys lore)…I do miss Horvil, but I was lost as the site you’re talking about (DP?)…Shanny will get fired in less than 3 years.

I don't know about Dez.
THis is an isolated situation, and while I thought it was funny that there was any issue at all, I don’t think it’s a big deal. I happened to rush a fraternity the year after hazing was banned (due to an incident the previous year). I was disappointed, because I felt like I missed part of the experience. Humiliating, yeah, probably. I never really got off on hazing others, but I understood it as part of the game, I guess. As long as nobody gets physically permanently hurt, I guess I’m OK with it. However, the NFL IS a professional organization, and I’m not sure there’s a place for it there. College campuses, maybe. But you wouldn’t see a law office or hospital hazing first year lawyers and doctors. Or would you?
