Posts From Around SB Nation: 7/18-7/24
So in attempt two, I'm going to try and split the articles, with about half being about football in general and the other half being opinion pieces from around SBNation. Now a number of these, the first two, are more statistical and deal with football in general, so while they aren't as funny, they are well worth reading. The second two groups listed are either opinion based or are more fun posts, meant to entertain. So without further ado, we jump

Where Arrowhead Pride Stands In the World at Arrowhead Pride
- This was one of my favorite articles among all SBN this past week for two reasons: the first is that is deals with sociology and group movements, one of my favorite things to study, and secondly shows in great detail the traffic that our divisions SBN sites receive. One thing that is kind of cool, is at the bottom of the page, all the way down, in the right corner is a little button that says sitemeter that does a similar thing, but this article is a great indepth look at the four blogs in our division. Take a look at the link near the bottom, but make sure to spend some time in this article. I can't recommend this article enough.
The Impact of 1st-Round Offensive Linemen I and Part II at Niners Nation:
- This is a great statistical analysis tied closely to how it relates to the actual game. The author does a fantastic job looking at the effect that lineman have on the game, especially those drafted in the 1st round of the draft. Well researched and with a lot of history behind his conclusions, what he says is pretty awesome stuff. While there is a third part to come, these first two are a great place to learn about how much 1st round linemen affect a team.
Matching Simpsons Characters with Redskins Players and Is Andy Reid to Blame for Donovan McNabb's Shortcomings? at Hogs Haven:
- The Simpsons related article is just funny, and I really got a kick out of it. While you might need to have some knowledge of the Redskins team and history, it is still quite fun. I would like to issue a challenge to a more talented writer then I to try and do something like that for our Broncos. The second article is a mock trial between JimmyK, a great writer over at Bleeding Green Nation and the author, Kevin Edwoldt, on whether or not Reid had some part in the struggles McNabb faced. Now if any of you have visted HH or BGN since the trade, you would know that members at both sites are pretty high strung about the McNabb topic, but this article is well written and takes a lighter side to how to come to a conclusion on this debate. A great article.
Why every NFL fan should oppose an 18-game season at Stampede Blue:
- Now Stampede Blue is one blog that is pretty torn among it's writers, main writer and members on how the blog should be run, and often there are flame wars in posting, articles and in the comments. But among this twisted crag that is Stampede Blue, I found a niche for myself. Now more then any article this is pure opinion, but being an anti-18 game season person, I found it to be quite nice, now there was almost immediately another post titled Why every NFL fan should be just fine with and 18-game season, which was followed by 18 game season - What we should do instead? Now out of these three articles you should be able to find someone who agrees with your views, but these three posts cover a wide topic, but out of the three, I chose the one I did because it was the more well written one, as well as it seemed more thought out.
And there you have it, my choice of posts from around SBN from last week. I hope to continue this as a weekly post. Any feedback would be nice, especially on the poll for those who want this to end, please state why in the comments section, thanks. Enjoy!

Those articles for the 18 game schedule were awesome.
I was actually undecided on the issue before reading those posts.
After?
Still not sure, but I am leaning towards the 18 game over the 16. It just seems to embody the sport more to me. It’s a man’s game of durability, stamina, and strategy. Changing out two preseason games (4 quarters total for starters) for regular season games just makes things more interesting. Coaches have to gameplan better and strategize their team building better.
Anyhow… the whole CBA player/owner salary/revenue BS needs to get handled first. I’d love to see the switch to 18, but not at the expence of no 2011 year.
P.S. Great post idea. I hope you plan on doing this weekly. It’s cool to see what other fans around the league are talking about.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I hope and fully expect a longer season to be coming, but the powers at be should be shot for bringing it up now. We don’t need yet another reason for players to be pissed.
I hope they work on a new CBA then go work on extending the season only after the agreement is done. They could just make it an addendum and negotiate the give and take on its own merits.

Alex - do you think adding it in was deliberate, by any chance?
The owners want the 18 game year, and it’s a financial cash cow if they can do it with parking, concessions, in-stadium merchandise and such. The problem is, how do you force it on the players, who know that over any 8 year career, they will play the equivalent of 9 years? When you have a shot of pushing it into the CBA (and if it goes in, it will never come out) when you can lock out the players if they balk. I think that it was a good move from a chess perspective, and a lousy one if you’re a player. I have some problems with it as a fan – the question of historical records has come up each time the season expands, but it’s still worth considering.
One research project that I read suggested that later in the season, players are more prone to injury. It was a preliminary work, and I don’t hold it as perfect, but I suspect that it will get a new look or some new friendly research – if we’re looking at increasing injuries to our players in those last two games, we may want to reconsider. But, realistically, we almost certainly won’t – it’s money in the bank to have those two extra games, and the owners know what they’re doing.
Gnothi Seauton
On the one hand, thinking the timing of something this big would be left to chance seems a little naive. On the other hand, however, the idea isn’t new – perhaps there are no real predictors to knowing when an idea like this might begin to pick up steam.
I tend to agree that this CBA expiration was probably seen as an avenue to pursue a longer season, whether premeditated or not. I’m just not sure I see a lockout as being any more scary than a walkout. So while I agree that it was a strategic move, I don’t yet know if it was a good one. If they get the CBA done with this included then the answer should be obvious. If the owners are instead perceived as being too greedy and asking for too much and/or if adding this to the table further complicates the process as a whole, well then I’d say it was certainly a bad move.
The idea that the players don’t want to play longer is vastly under stated, IMO. I think it’s a risk to pile such a polarizing issue onto the mountain of other issues already on the docket. As you noted above about the research suggesting the players more injury prone late in the season, there will certainly be more injuries as a mere result of playing more games and more snaps, also.
In the end, I think money talks. The players will need compensated for the extra game(s) and will eventually agree to make it happen. But I think ownership should excercise patience with this issue if it turns out to be a sticking point late in negotiations when 2011 looms.

One thing that I think may piss fans off if we get an 18 game season
If playoff starters already sit out week 17, I really see it possible for teams that have clinched to site players the last two to three weeks rather then just the last week or two. Fans will then become upset because weeks 17-19 will have just become half regular season games, for teams fighting for spots, and half pre-season games, with teams that have clinched a spot and don’t want to risk injury.

I enjoyed the 18 game article, i hadnt considered the history argument
Thank you for putting this together.

So seeing records broken is always a sad thing, but something like O.J. Simpson’s 143.1 yards per game for a season average won’t be broken, so that brings me joy.

Haha 2.39% of AP visitors head to Pornhub directly after.
A longer season is coming, IMO. The debate just doesn’t know it yet. And I’m all for more real football and less pre-season football.
I voted for the offensive linemen article.
I enjoy these posts, keep ’em coming!

Ah, don’t let it get to you. Some of the readers probably just like reading solely Bronco news. They’ll probably come around when they realize you’ve sort of done the leg work for ’em so they can spend a lot less time by having a few of the best articles already picked out for them.

Haha not worried
I just find it funny how they vote and leave rather then trying to help me make it into a better piece.

My opinion?

Nice work
I don’t spend a lot of time at the other sites, so this is a nice bit of flavor from around the other blogs. Thanks and rec’d, keep it going.
I agree
I have witnessed some of the flaming at Stampede Blue and I think you are dead on with your assessment there. Niners Nation has a couple of good writers over there. AP has a good site too, and Kevin E at Hogs Haven has helped me out before.
This is a good feature max.

I am a really big fan of AP
While they may be Chiefs fans, I can usually find a great article or two when I visit there. Same with Niners Nation, some of their staffers write great stuff. Also KK, nice shirt you’re where there.

Any chance you want to take over Horse Tracks?
Seems right up your alley, and since Doug gave it up, my daily cup of Orange and Blue coffee has been weekly at best. No jab at John intended here – he’s busy, and I know that. Horse Tracks are just great and I would like to see them return as a daily feature. Max, if you like trolling the blogosphere and the net for good stuff, consider it!
If not, thanks for these looks around SB nation. I appreciate the work it takes, and I thank you for the effort!

I voted on the 18-game schedule
If it isn’t broke then don’t fix it. The schedule is fine the way it is. I mean if it goes to 18 games and two preseason games are taken away then teams have what, like 2 games to see who makes the team…..and with a bigger roster too.
I was against it when I first heard about it and this just reinforces that fact that it is a bad idea.
Oh and thanks Maxwellsdemon for this post. This is a cool idea. I don’t visit alot of other blogs unless we are playing them on Sunday, so this was nice to see what others are talking about.
