Madden NFL 11 Full Game - New Thoughts
I just got the new Madden earlier today, and I have to say that I really like it. Having played the demo and gotten used to the control changes from last years version has definitely helped. Also, playing as the Broncos makes it a lot better.
First off, does anybody know if there's a roster update out yet? My internet was down when I was playing, so I couldn't check, but last year they had an update ready before the release, and there are plenty of changes around the league that have happened that didn't make it onto the disc for one reason or another.
My thoughts after the jump.....
Appearance - As I noted in my previous post, the graphics are better and players look more realistic. But once I started playing as the Broncos, where I know what a lot of the players look like, it started getting scary. The face of the virtual Ronald Fields looked just like him in real life, and different players looked more or less like their real-life counterparts. What surprised me was Tim Tebow. For one game, I put him as starter, and I swear, it looked EXACTLY like Tebow in real life (minus the Friar Tuck look), which surprised me a bit since he's a rookie.
The stadium looked a bit more realistic, especially the crowd, where it wasn't just generic people wearing generic team colored clothes (when you're on the field playing). There were still people like that in the crowd, but you could see people wearing jerseys, and you could tell what player's jersey they were wearing. There were Tebow fans a-plenty (even with Orton starting), along with a good helping Champ Bailey jerseys.
The one thing about the appearance of things that still bugs me is Josh McDaniels. They neglected to make him actually look like McD again, although last year it was understandable. But still, in the game he doesn't bear much of a resemblance to McDaniels in real life, looking older and with different facial features, plus in the game he was taller than Orton, I'm guessing in the 6' 6" range, where as in real life there is no way he's even six feet tall.
Gameplay - As much as I disliked some of the changes at first when I played the demo, I've gotten used to them and have no problem with them (for the most part). The only thing I still don't get is switching pre-play controls to the "Strategey Pad," which doesn't seem to serve any purpose except for messing up people who were used to the old way of making coverage audibles, line adjustments, etc. But you get used to it. The removal of the sprint button seems to be going well, as the range of speed with different players is more noticeable now with some of the other changes that were made. Once you get used to the new kicking controls (which doesn't take to long), it can actually be a bit easier than it used to be, since the variable of moving the right stick the wrong way on accident when pushing forwards has been removed.
I'm actually warming up to GameFlow, since there's a bit more variety to the play calling (though you start to tell which plays the computer chooses for you more often), which can really help on defense. If you don't like how the computer called a draw on third and long, then just audible. If you prefer calling your own plays, it's easy to switch to the normal play calling system. I don't know about online gameplanning against your opponent since my internet was down, but the regular situational gameplanning is relatively simple since you pretty much rate how different plays based on certain situations, so you can possibly avoid those unwanted run calls in long yardage situations.
The game is definitely geared towards the offense. I've found it much easier to run the ball now, I think they've made blockers do their job better. Also, it almost seems impossible to get an interception, with most defenders being pretty good at dropping the ball. In the three games I've played, there's only been one interception, and a whole lot of missed opportunities. If you can get pressure though, you should be able to have some degree of success on defense.
BRONCOS!!!!!!!! - Let me start by saying this: Justin Bannan is freaking amazing! He racked up 5 sacks for me against the Raiders, and in all of my games he was bringing constant pressure. Elvis Dumervil brought plenty of pressure when he rushed the passer, but I haven't gotten a sack with him yet. He seems good at wreaking havoc in general in the game, as he would tackle just about anybody within reach, whether it was behind the line of scrimmage or in open field. He was also solid in coverage, breaking up a few passes when nobody else was around. Brian Dawkins came up with the only interception I've seen in the game to date, and made some good tackles. D.J. Williams could stop anybody in their tracks, but couldn't catch anything that was thrown right into his hands. I didn't see much out of Champ, but maybe that was because they didn't throw in his direction often.
On offense, Kyle Orton was very accurate and completed most of his passes. Tebow wasn't overly accurate, but was mobile and got the job done. Knowshon Moreno did well, and has definite big-play ability. The receivers all did well (if I got them the ball). Eddie Royal is quick and can be very dangerous in the open field, netting me an 82 yard touchdown reception on my first offensive play. Demaryius Thomas dropped more balls than the other receivers (but not D.J. Williams), but was also was able to plow through defenders and make big plays on his way to the end zone. Jabar Gaffney and Brandon Stokley both showed that they've got good hands. Daniel Graham is a good short yardage option that can pick up extra yardage with his sheer power once you get it to him.
Matt Prater is underrated in the game overall, but he can put some good power behind his kicks. Only one of his kickoffs (that wasn't a squib), was actually returned. The wedge has been removed from kick returns (a bit late), making returning kicks harder than before, even if you have somebody like Eddie Royal, so I'd recommend not taking the ball out of the end zone. Punt returns, on the other hand, seem slightly easier for some reason.

so i went and got the game at midnight....
i am a huge madden fan and have gotten it every year since like 04….i am absolutely disapointed with this years game, while yes there are subtle differences there is nothing worth paying 60 dollars over esp if you have madden 10… the franchise mode(the mode that i play most) was left the exact same as last years….i tried to sell the game back to gamestp this morning at 8am but all they are aloowed to give back is 25 dollars…persoanlly i would just recomend saving your money and getting a copy of madden 10, because madden 11 is a carbon copy
but madden 10 doesnt have tebow. haha

Franchise Mode
is my favorite too and I was upset. BUT online 3 vs 3 is a lot of fun. I played for hours last night. So I guess it depends on if you want a deep franchise or online play. Although, the graphics and gameflow are improvements as well.

Yeah
The monopoly given to madden for NFL games has absolutely killed any advancements in franchise play.
I haven’t really liked any of the madden changes since the 2005 version.
The best franchise system out there is still NFL2k5… even with the horrible “draft only RBs in the 1st round” programming bug. The ability to set up practice schedules, etc. was awesome, and the cap management system was great. To make up for the bug, I tend to use my 1st round pick on some low-round/waiver-wire player, and pretend the draft started with round 2, unless it happens to be a year I need an RB in which case I’ll trade up to get someone good (since typically 20+ rookie RBs go in the first round).
I like the madden game play, interface, playbooks, etc. a bit better than 2k5, so I stillI’m still playing madden 2005 for franchise mode too (I hate the minigames, so once they started requiring that for draft scouting I was done).
The sad thing is, some very simple fixes would make all the difference in the world.
1) Allow roster bonuses, different payout schedules (front loaded vs. backloaded, etc.) and reworked contracts so you can lock up your allpros…. Sure, its generally easy to simply sign and trade for a equally good player, but I wouldn’t have to do such cheesy tactics if they allowed me to resign my 80-rated backup tackle for less than 5mil/year.
2) Add a “practice” function, or tweak the player progression equations a bit so its easier to develop bench players. Training camp minigames are pretty good and the right concept, but if you have a relatively low-ranked rookie, its hard to advance them in the games beyond a point or 2… then they sit on the bench, and because they don’t accumulate stats, they never advance. Adding something like that would make it easier to take late round “developmental” prospects, stick them third on the depth chart for a couple years, and then promote them when the starter gets too pricey.
3) Give the option of turning off the stupid minigames, for a random generated advancement. The people who like Franchise mode are generally strategic thinkers, not “button masher” players. Forcing me to do some stupid and repetitive minigame to draft and develop players is just moronic. Hell, 3/4 of the time I set the controller settings to all CPU and let the PS2 play itself in the background for me to watch while I do something else, maybe only jumping in for redzone plays, etc….
If madden made those changes, I’d go buy a new game system in an instant just to buy the game (I’m still playing on my PS2, because madden10 didn’t offer enough for me to get a new system). Until then, I’ll soldier on with madden2005, NFL2k5, and NCAA 2009….
I got it about 4 hours ago and I love it.
Already completed about 10 madden moments, beat 2 guys online with my ultimate team and played 4 regular season superstar games with Tim Tebow. This night has been a success.

haha well yeah thats true
but you could always go and just add him into ten it only takes like what 5 min? im regretting my purchase still
i have to admit i thought this game was gonna be just as bad as 10, but EA has made an improvement
it might not be groundshaking but the visuals seem a bit improved and i love the team-specific stadium chants. i also liked how turbo was gone. the problem i still have with it is that all the tackle animations are still canned and they dont always respect physics. but with EA moving towards physics-based engines with NHL and NBA, im sure hope madden can do the same next year. its time to start taking advantage of this next-gen technology.
I had to share this with you guys
My 1st touchdown using the Denver Broncos was against the Cincinnati Bengals in Madden Moments. I was supposed to charge us down the field and win a thriller such as we did with the immaculate reception.
I threw a deep corner route to Brandon Stokley who ran in for the TD (although I did run the goal line before I went in :))
My 2nd touchdown came in Franchise mode. Guess who it came against? The Bengals. Eddie Royal deep post = touchdown.
I am telling you guys this because I believe it’s what we are about to see on Sunday!!!!

My madden moment was a deep ball to stokley that was deflected and caught by Eddie Royal for a TD.
This game is actually pretty good for the Broncos. We don’t have any outstanding scores, but we have tons of depth in the game. Demaryius Thomas is a beast in Madden, as well.

I won't pay 60 bucks for a roster update...
I really like the developments in blocking, but it’s not enough for me to shell out $60. I wish they would slow down their production schedule and just sell annual roster updates.
I’m going to just have to create Tebow (and all the other new players) in Madden 10.
I agree
It’d be better for the game, imo, if they got away from the new release annually bit, and just updated rosters.
For at least the last 10 years, the differences between the annual releases hasn’t been enough to justify the cost.

That’s the whole idea though. They can and do get 60 clams out of people for a roster update and a few changes each year. If people stopped buying the game it might force them to rethink their release processes, but until that point they’ll keep milking it.
I haven’t been giving EA money because they stopped making Madden for the PC.

same here
Damn I was upset when they stopped pc production. I must admit tho, every august I can’t help but consider a PS3 so I can get madden. Even with all its flaws, its still a fun game. Its just that once they bought exclusive nfl rights, they crippled any and all competition. Without competition, they stopped being innovative.

Not Too Bad
When I first started playing the demo, I didn’t like it too much. But once I got used to controls and playing full game, I love it. It is very realistic as far as players ability. You can really tell the difference in the throwing style of Orton & Tebow. I mean it takes tebow a bit longer to get the ball out of his hand once you decide to throw. But that sucker can RUN, I love to bootleg with him. Get me close to the goaline and tebow scores. I am playing franchise with Tebow as starter. Tebow is good as long as you figure out what type of passes are his strengths. Put Orton in and you will see what a great passer he is, can really thread the needle. All in all, I like the game and am sure it will give me hours of entertainment. Go Broncos!!!!
Quit bragging about Bannan...
he dislocated his hip in my first game and is out for 10 weeks….I still get after the passer though. I broke Peyton Manning’s thumb in the first quarter and went on to get like 8 sacks on Curtis Painter…good times.
Have a good time all the time...that's my motto. - Viv Savage
Good article, I was gonna do one myself
Here’s some thoughts I had:
Moreno: I don’t think he has that good of big play ability in the game, but boy does he hit the whole hard. Rarely does he get hit in the backfield.
On the picks, I learned that you gotta do it yourself, which can be pretty hard. But, if you do get a pick, its much easier to return it. The defenders can block pretty well, well at least the Broncos can.
I agree, running is much easier, and passing is too. I feel like DB’s are more realistic on short routes ie: there not going to be lock down on every short route.
The DL is very good, and your complaints on DT I have yet to encounter. He has huge big play ability and I just send him on deep routes all day and throw it to him, very good.
Ratings I don’t like: Spencer Larsen, 50. I mean, if he was this bad I think the Broncos woud go after any FB in FA. Haggan, 72. He’s really bad in this game, and I dont know why. Sure, he’s not great and he’s nothing more than a solid to good player, but I don’t think he’s a 72. Also, in Franchise mode Brady Quinn always regresses in year 2 which I don’t like. Also, BDawk retires after year 1 and barring injury I don’t see Dawk retiring next year.
Overall: Really like this new version, much smoother and I disagree with those who say its like Madden 10. Defense is a little tougher but its much easier to rush the passer and if you do that well D’s not that hard. Great game and it exceeded my expectations
I am trying to put together
a tourny between all the AFC West blogs. The plan is that you will battle it out with your own blog first and then the last man standing from each blog will face the division to see which blog stands alone! If your down email me at scottsarley@hotmail.com and Ill get a bracket going for MHR. I know Nick Cast has talked with me about this before so you can hit him up as well
Haven't played since Madden 08....however!
My first exhibition game against the Raiders I had a hard time on D….I was way to spastic about changing players.
Second game against the Chargers, I let the play develop on defense, and had a much different outcome!!
BDawk picked Rivers.
Phonz pick-sixed Rivers….
DJ pick sixed Rivers!
Orton ahd 6 TD’s!
KM had 2 rushing TD’s!
I won 70-6.
I think not being spastic on D is a good thing LOL

So...
I’ve got an online franchise fantasy draft coming up in two weekends (and of course I’m the Broncos…just in case you were wondering :-P).
I already have some ideas, but I shall put this question out to you. What Broncos should I try to target in this upcoming draft (besides all of them haha)? I’ll have 15 other user-controlled teams drafting along with me and as of now I have no idea what slot I’m going to pick.
I’m a DJ-Will fan, like Doom, was thinking of snagging Mr. Thomas later on, etc.
Just for fun…what would your plans be?
is there any room in your franchise? I would be interested in being a part of it.
or maybe we could get enough people to start an MHR online franchise going..
