Friday new$ and note$ | National Football Post

This week Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees weighed in on the matter, telling the Boston Globe: "Last year, we experienced the highest revenues we've ever experienced. But now we're being told the system is broken. Until that's proven to us, all we're seeing is that revenues are as high as they've ever been."

It was raining cats and dogs, but Brandon Marshall dropped a 30 yard pass that hit him in stride in the hands with no defender in sight. It was a catch I’d expect myself to make horsing around with buddies let alone an NFL player.

I’ve never been a fan of NFL Network but I was hopeful they would use Lombardi once in a while. Like on Sunday mornings for his usual column… Nope…

And I still don’t like this network.

NFL Network

McGeorge, I completely agree! National Football Post hasn’t been the same without him, and as for NFL Network, it seems like they want personalities, not guys that actually know the game.

The network would gain so much from Lombardi, but choose to use him as a reporter getting scoops, while they have Warren Sapp and Jamie Dukes talking jibberish on NFL Total Access.

I don’t mind if they have them break down film because as ex-players, they know what to look for, but in my opinion, Sapp, Dukes, and Woodson, don’t offer anything to NFL Total Access.

Recently, didn’t a player (can’t remember who) call NFL Network, a “tabloid”?

Looking forward to the second year in McDaniels system!

but thankfully we have some pretty interesting backups to watch. Can’t wait to see Cox play and I hope he gets himself a pick tonight. Oh yeah, and Tebow. Hopefully he’ll be smart enough not to take a big hit if he runs it. Slide, Tebow, Slide!

Statements like

the dismantling of Shanahan’s young offense by his successor will remain controversial until McDaniels’ own unit accomplishes enough to make people forget about it.

just irk me to no end. What “dismantling”? Yeah, we traded away Cutler. Check out the stats, Orton was better than Cutler last year. Throw in an attitude problem, and the fact that we raped Chicago in the draft picks department and I’d say it was easily the right decision. OK, so we traded away Brandon Marshall after using him for an entire season (oh yeah, besides the games he was suspended for insubordination, and training camp when he was acting like a three-year-old) rather than throw a huge contract at him. Sure, I agree, Marshall is a fantastic receiver, but I’m not going to say it was the wrong decision to not only let him walk, but get two second round draft picks in return for him when you don’t even know if he’s going to come and play (or be able to) every week.

So what dismantling? Scheffler? A pass catching tight-end who also had major attitude (and agent) issues? Sorry, but he wasn’t really proving himself to be that useful last year. Don’t know if it was effort or our scheme, but sadly enough it turned out to be a poor fit. To me the best part of our offense from 2008 was the line, and that was kept entirely intact last year! That is until Hamilton played himself out of a starting role. Weigs also looked past his prime so the let him go after the season was over. Shannahan didn’t even return as many offensive starters in 2008 from 2007 as McDaniels did in 2009 from 2008. What dismantling?

by poorboywilly on Aug 15, 2010 3:47 PM MDT reply actions

I would call it dismantling

We traded the top WR, our quarterback, our TE, and a fan favorite running back. Did anyone say it was a bad move or just a controversial move? I think it was a controversial move, I think trading Cutler was a good thing, but I still think it was a controversial move. So yes, it was dismantling, get off your jaded high horse, and come back down to reality. Our offensive is completely different then how it was run two years ago, I call that dismantling, we run a different blocking scheme, we run a different type of system, we have a different type of quarterback, yes, we dismantled, I’m not saying for good or bad, but it was dismantling, rebuilding, new beginning, call it what you want.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

by Topher Doll on Aug 15, 2010 4:00 PM MDT up reply actions

I’m on a high horse for questioning why people believe that Cutler was an offensive juggernaut? We kept that WR, TE, and fan favorite fullback around for a whole season before they were traded. I’m not in reality for saying that the foundation of the offense, the offensive line, has stayed intact (at least the good parts of it?) I’m jaded for realizing that no NFL team, even a very good one (not to mention an 8-8 one), can stay the same for very long?

OK, whatever.

by poorboywilly on Aug 15, 2010 4:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Did I say Cutler was an offensive juggernaut?

As for our offensive line, it’s hardly the same starters it was two years ago, our skill positions on offense are vastly different, as is our defense. I haven’t said anything about progression or regression, I’m talking about change, and there has been a lot of it since McD came in, I’m not passing judgement in this comment on it, I’m just saying that, by definition, if you change a large majority of a team, you are dismantling and reassembling.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

by Topher Doll on Aug 16, 2010 12:51 AM MDT up reply actions

No you didn’t say that about Cutler, nor did I say you specifically did. Yeah if you count injuries there’s a lot of new starters. Clady, Harris and Kuper are still the core of the line, and we extended Kuper. Last year McDaniels returned the whole defensive line, and even Shannahan himself couldn’t have defended the play of Hamilton. Things have changed, yes, but the crux of the “dismatling” argument is still

until McDaniels’ own unit accomplishes enough to make people forget about it.

To be dismantled, something has to be “mantled” in the first place. What was so great about the players that aren’t here anymore? Outside of Marshall, none of the players who have moved on are impact players. Plus, Marshall had his issues…no way the Broncos wanted to let his on-field performance go. The fact that he was demanding oodles of money while being openly insubordinate and a perennial risk of doing something stupid that takes him off the field made the decision for the Broncos. Marshall dismantled himself.

I realize you aren’t trying to defend the moves themselves, but I’m just annoyed at how the whole “dismantled” argument begs the question…we can’t assume a priori that the 2008 offense was somehow deserving of remaining together. Plus it ignores one of the basic realities of NFL football: roster turnover occurs on a weekly basis, with or without regime change. Hamilton’s on-field performance forced him off the roster. Marshall’s extra-curricular activities forced him off the roster. Some moves are voluntary, and some just have to be made.

Whatever happened to Rey Maualuga?

Is he still starting for the Bengals?

I remember he almost killed Moreno in the first game and seemed to play with an intensity that was unmatched by rookies in the early part of the season.

He seemed to disappear. Did he get hurt?

I don’t know if he was hurt or anything, but he’s there. IIRC he was one of the players getting targeted by the scout team.
