Warning!!!! What follows can be 100% classified as a rant, but if I don't get this out there I think I might explode, so please bear with me. The NFL regular season is about to start, and for me that means looking at players across the league, reading what "analysts" are saying about other teams, and compiling a draft list because every year I play in a fantasy football league with some friends. This year I was very curious about how the national Fantasy writers would place broncos players, so I went to the various Fantasy sites across the web and looked at their rankings lists for the top 40 or so players at every position. Here is where the rage started to build.
What I found was a complete disrespect for Kyle Orton. Every major site has him ranked in a range of 26-28. That means the the majority of the MSM thinks that there are going to be 25-27 quarterbacks that score more fantasy points than Kyle Orton. Fantasy points can be scored in a multitude of ways, but it basically comes down to gaining points for yards and touchdowns, and losing points for interceptions and fumbles. For reference, Orton was 16th in the league, in terms of points, for the 2009 season according to ESPN. So what quarterbacks to these experts think are going to out score Orton? Well there are the perennial performers like Matthew Stafford and David Garrard; the fearsome Matts: Leinart, Hasslebeck, and Cassel, and everyone's favorite Pro Bowler Alex Smith.
Now I'm a realist, I think Orton has a very reasonable shot at being a top 10 QB this year, but would not be shocked if he ended up in the 15-16 range again. The future is cloudy at best. However, putting Orton at 27th is like comparing him to Jamarcus Russell. 27th is where you put quarterbacks for teams that are dreaming of the day they reach .500. 27th is where you put back ups for good teams whose starter is coming back from injury. 27th is a downright insult to Kyle Orton. He hasn't won a super bowl, but he did get to one with the Bears. He hasn't thrown for 4000yds, it was just 3800, and he didn't throw 30 interceptions like ESPN's 10th ranked QB either.
I really want to break something!!!
