WR Demaryius Thomas Re-Injures Foot

It has be reported and confirmed over various media outlets that Broncos rookie WR Demaryius Thomas has re-injured his foot and was getting it checked to find out the severity.  Thomas originally injured the foot while training for the NFL Scouting Combine in February and missed all off-season workouts.  It didn't stop the Broncos from drafting Thomas with the 22nd pick of the Draft in April.

Thomas did suit up for the start of Training Camp, but was injured on a catch during the team's open scrimmage at Invesco Field on August 7th.  He remained out of action until Tuesday when he returned to practice.

With the depth that exists at WR, it might be time for the Broncos to think about shuttering Thomas for the year allowing that foot to completely heal.  Sure, the severity of the latest setback is yet to be known, but having Thomas back on the field before he is ready, fully ready, can only be considered a detriment.

Hopefully the latest setback isn't serious.

Ugh

Fingers crossed it isn’t serious. Obviously it is more serious then you’re right they should shutter him for the year. But without knowing, and if it is somethng that can heal within a few weeks, I wouldn’t be thinking that yet.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

We don't want this to become a trend

If he keeps trying to come back at 85% he is just going to keep reinjuring his foot and his career will be a bust.

We might want to seriously consider letting DT sit out for 3-4 months and FULLY let this foot heal. Maybe even the whole year.

Our Wide Receiver depth is strong enough to let him sit out.

If DT sits out, Eric Decker is going to step in and get more reps.

It’s something we want to consider.

Well

I’ve visited with Raiders fans who according to the stupid mentality they do nothing to diminish say we’re weaker because Brandon Marshall is gone. Also, they think they’re a lock for the playoffs. Hilarious! This is why I’m going to tell my children never to smoke ganja.

Yes...

He practiced Tuesday, and reports are he did something to the foot again. Could be scartissue(normal) or something worse…

Yeah

Didn’t Decker have the same setback with a scar tissue injury? He came back and looked good win week 2.

by BroncosBassist on Aug 25, 2010 12:19 PM MDT up reply actions

If he can come back and the injury is fully healed and he is close to 100% then bring him back at that point. If not sit him for several weeks or months and let him heal. Its not the best situation but if he is lost for the season or most of it no way we should the Broncos put next year at risk too. Thomas is hopefully going to be a playmaker but only if he his foot is healed and he is on the field. Enjoy your check dude and at least be on the sideline cheering the team on at games.

by NWBroncofan on Aug 25, 2010 12:00 PM MDT reply actions

Shut him down!

I really hope we keep him from damaging his foot permanently. I’d rather sit him and give him every opportunity to heal. He is not the anchor for our offense. Still excited to see how Decker pans out. And Gaffney is looking like a true #1

by TXBroncoFan on Aug 25, 2010 12:05 PM MDT reply actions

Sad face.

We need to let this guy get his foot healed before we try and trot him out there. This is getting silly.

I can’t wait to see this guy out there, he’s one of my favorites already and I’ve barely seen him play. But darnit, get him healthy. We already have solid depth at the position group, no need to rush him back in.

Fix the line, Moreno will be fine.

Can we PUP him until week 10?

No

We can’t put him on the reserve PUP list for the first 6-10 weeks of the season, because he’s not on the preseason active PUP list. We can carry him on the 53 man roster or we can place him on IR after Aug 31.

I'm not sure we can say that yet

He’ll be dynamic once he’s healed up and gets repetitions, but we don’t really know just how dynamic yet. that said, I’m really looking forward to seeing him perform.

I hope Thomas is OK, of course. But just to throw this out there, when is it fair game to question the strategy of using your two first round draft picks, which you maneuvered for using good draft value, for an injury risk and a project? Both were gambles. Both have potential high rewards. But would it have been better to play it safe with one or the other, or to keep the higher first round pick, or to keep the bundle of decent picks they had built up before the Tebow trade?

Great reply!

That’s all I have to say; just great comments!

by CompUser on Aug 25, 2010 12:34 PM MDT up reply actions

McD is a gambler. And I actually like that. My only thoughts during and immediately after the draft is that I was hoping they could maneuver to get one, if not both, of the two top O-line prospects. So I guess if Beadles and Watson both pan out, those thoughts will be mitigated. High risk can have high reward, and I’m not denying that I don’t see tremendous potential in both Thomas and Tebow. But if Thomas has a chronic issue with his foot and Tebow doesn’t become an NFL QB, then we’ll look back at the strategy of using both picks for risks as a mistake.

Your 2010-2011 Colorado Avalanche: Reaching Up to the Cap Floor

by Bob in Boulder on Aug 25, 2010 12:40 PM MDT up reply actions

True, any time a player doesn’t live up to expectations, or fails to make an impact because of a career marred my injuries, you can look back on that acquisition as a mistake. But again, every player in the world in any sport is at risk at any moment to have their career ended by an injury. And even the elite prospects in the draft bust… we know this.

Again, not trying to jump on you or anything, but you wanted us to target one of the top O-line prospects in this draft? To get into the top 10, even considering where we started in this draft, we would have to trade the majority of this years draft picks, or high draft picks next year to get there. Then, on top of that, we would have had to pay that player we picked there a huge amount of money for the privilege of mortgaging the rest of the draft to get him. We are paying both Tebow and Thomas less money combined that those players drafted in the top 10 of this draft. That’s not risky in my eyes, in fact, it’s damn frugal.

Who would you have targeted? Okung? He’s injured right now and out for the a long time… How would you like to be paying that guy close to $50 Million and watch him sit on the sidelines.

As far as what we did to address the O-line, you mentioned it already, but the front office did the same thing. We targeted both Beadles and Walton, and we got our guys. They’re playing big minutes in the pre-season, and learning on the fly. All indications show they were both smart pickups… and if they can continue to learn, grow, and excel, I expect our offensive line to be the best in the league next year if everyone is “healthy”.

Fix the line, Moreno will be fine.

by aLuffabo on Aug 25, 2010 1:13 PM MDT up reply actions

need to clarify

I meant interior O-linemen. Iupati and Pouncy went 17 and 18. At one time we held the 12th (and the 14th if they don’t throw it away for Phonz), so those guys could have been had. And yes, everyone is at risk of injury. But a guy currently injured, as Thomas was, is probably a greater risk, no?

Your 2010-2011 Colorado Avalanche: Reaching Up to the Cap Floor

by Bob in Boulder on Aug 25, 2010 1:26 PM MDT up reply actions

A guy who is currently injured is a bigger risk, no doubt. No argument there. But I feel 100% certain that DT would have gone far sooner if it weren’t for his injury and inability to work out for clubs leading up to the draft.

Iupati is a bigger project than Thomas will ever be… that guy is about as raw as it gets. I really feel like McDaniels liked Walton more than Pouncey, I don’t think we were ever really in the market for a first-round center. Again, I think McDaniels had his sights set on Beadles (we drafted him higher than he was expected to go) and Walton as guys that had all the qualities to excel in his system, and he got them.

Fix the line, Moreno will be fine.

by aLuffabo on Aug 25, 2010 1:48 PM MDT up reply actions

You're going to be head

over heels for our draft , no matter how it shakes out? Even if it turns into a bust of a class?

by Broncos_FTW on Aug 25, 2010 2:41 PM MDT up reply actions

it will always be fair game, but the root of the issue is do you want your coach/front office to try to go the safe route or a route they felt best gave us the chance to win?

McX still need more time to prove out their ability to draft. So far, it’s been slightly above avg (2010 draft could be outstanding if players heal up and progress)

Always remember Goliath was a 40 point favorite over David.

by Orange and Blue on Aug 25, 2010 12:34 PM MDT up reply actions

So far their drafting ability is

incomplete and looking questionable. I’ll give them an incomplete for now – and hope they are successful. Saying it’s above average, is using rose colered glasses, with blinders to the problem areas, IMO. By trading away players and getting lots of good draft picks (good moves IMO) they had great drafting opportunities in 2009 and 2010; so they need to have lots of excellent players from those two years, plus also in 2011 – and while some failures are typical, even for strong GMs, they need lots of solid players and some stars from these three drafts..

by cohiker on Aug 25, 2010 1:01 PM MDT up reply actions

My assessment is based on:

2009 was a 2 out 5 draft (Moreno and Ayers and thats about it for immediate impact players…McBath and Bruton are fantastic backups, with Quinn possibly moving up the draft to 2.5 if he can replace Graham)

2010 is a 4 out of 5 draft (starters in Walton, Beadles…impact WRs in Decker and DT – if you choose to believe his injuries are insurmountable then we agree to disagree -, future starting CB and current return man Cox, and of course the biggest wild card Tebow). If Tebow becomes the starting QB for a winning Broncos team then this goes a 5 out of 5 draft IMO.

Always remember Goliath was a 40 point favorite over David.

by Orange and Blue on Aug 25, 2010 5:19 PM MDT up reply actions

After the player trades (not counting the draft day trades)

in the 09 & 10 drafts, we had four picks in the top 20, three picks in the second round (all in the top half), and three picks in the third round – 10 total in the 1st 3 rounds, plus the normal picks in the later rounds.

Impact players (well above average starters) – none in 2009. Moreno – ok RB with potential. Ayers – not even a starter in 09; no other starters. 2010 TBD, but the only new preseason starters so far, seem to be Beadles and Walton by default (not impact players yet). So far, I don’t like what I see from having so many high picks. But I’ll stick with my incomplete grade, since there is reasonable hope for several players.

This might be why there's been no decision on Lloyd V Stokely

If the injury doesn’t heal quick enough they might keep both Lloyd and Stokely until he returns.

by trumanj on Aug 25, 2010 12:24 PM MDT reply actions

I think that's been the case all along truman

Thomas and Decker were known to be recovering from injuries and McX had to have made a contingency plan for the situation that one or both might have to be placed on the PUP list or IR. It’s too late for the PUP list for either of them now. I had previously thought that Decker would be the likely candidate to be put on a Reserved list, but it appears the opposite may be true. As others have stated, it may be better to let him heal.

Foot injury

Is extremely non-specific. I seriously doubt the Broncos would have let him play if they did not think he was 100%. Why risk it? This latest injury could be completely unrelated to any earlier injuries.

The Bottom Line is Thomas needs to get his foot healthy.

If the Medical staff feels it’s a short term injury with no lingering affects, then he just need heal and be ready as he can be for the season. If it’s not, I’d say IR is the best place for him to be, and then go get that foot fixed and healed, ready to go if and when we play in 2011. He doesn’t do himself any good to go back and forth, long term health of the foot should be priority one. The WR depth is good enough to play without him. Yes it would be even deeper with him, but if he isn’t ready the world won’t end.

I wouldn't rush to sit him either...

Especially if it’s scar tissue. As frustrating as “in one day out another” is, it may be necessary. Some times with these injuries you’ve got to get out on the field and knock stuff loose, let it settle then knock it loose again until it’s finally 100% healed. If you sit him right now and he still needs to knock stuff loose, it will just knock loose even more painfully when we do let him play.

Our WRs look like a strength currently. I don’t see why we wouldn’t just have him sit out and heal up. Keep Stoke, Lloyd, and Willis for now. I’m satisfied with what I’ve seen from our WRs so far in the preseason. I think they’ll do fine without DT for a bit.

Demaryius making the final roster, going IR

It seems like RB is a position we could take a risk cutting Fargas, Ball and Ball. After the final cutdwown we place Thomas on IR and bring one of these guys back. Fargas might be very open to a handshake to come back to come back… If Thomas is ready in 6-8 weeks we get him this year if not we’re good with Gaffney, Royal, Decker, Willis and Lloyd. If anyone else gets hurt before the season starts we keep Stokely. Not secure moves but no risk no reward!

Heavy speculation!

Unless I’m missing the report, we have no idea what happened to his foot at this point. The thoughts of IR, PUP and blasting our draft strategy are so premature right now it’s ridiculous.

Let’s wait and see what happened before shelving our very talented, first-year WR.

Don't put the cart before the horse

still 2 weeks to final cuts (next weeks cut will be un-noticable), and we have no diagnosis at all. Chillax guys, we will be good to go, I am sure they were pretty sure he was at 100% of they would not have let him practice (lets face it, it’s not like DT is on the roster bubble). My guess would be scar tissue giving him pain, and they are just being cautious with him.

Lets see where we are after the Vikings game, THEN do roster moves… GO BRONCOS!

he's fine????

Thanks for the link to the DP article. But I do not interpret “initial tests, including X-rays and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam, indicate Thomas did not suffer a stress fracture, but he is still in doubt to play in the Broncos’ regular-season opener Sept. 12 in Jacksonville” as being he’s fine.

If/when he is fine, he will at least be practicing – and we will know he is reasonably fine when he is playing and beating CBs. Until then, he is ?? – which is better than having a confirmed injury.

I thought Decker would have the more difficult road to recovery since his injury was much worse.

It turns out Thomas is suffering the occasional tribulations of foot injuries. They are capricious and difficult to heal and they leave a lot of scar tissue. The load that gets put on the foot causes tearing of scar tissue that hurts, but doesn’t necessarily mean something bad for the season.
