Oakland Raiders training camp postcard - Jim Trotter - SI.com
The Raiders spend summer in Napa, Calif., on fields just behind the Marriott hotel. Normally the climate is relatively mild -- mid-70s or so -- but on Tuesday the temperature climbed to 103. Quarterback Jason Campbell, who spent the previous four seasons with Washington, joked that complaining teammates were spoiled. The good news for the players was that they practiced in shells (helmets, shoulder pads and shorts) instead of full gear. The bad news: The heat was expected to return Wednesday. In fact, a heat warning was issued through Wednesday night. Some players took the long view and said the weather was a blessing, because Oakland opens the season in Nashville, Tenn., where the average temperature is 83 in September. "We're going to need to be in this kind of environment a little bit," says coach Tom Cable. "This was good for it. I really am excited how we handled it today as a football team."

Garland's Choice

Broncos or the Wild Blue Yonder is not exactly the Devil or the Deep Blue sea. With the football talent he apparently has, he could play football, buy his own plane, serve in the reserves as long as he wants and actually go on active duty once his football days are over so he has a career after football. As a former Army officer, I applaud his commitment to the military. Whatever he decides, good for him.

Garlands Choice

If Garland were to opt for the NFL and choose AF Reserve as a military continuation, couldn’t he be called back immediately to military service if there was a perceived, created or real military threat to the nation? The kid does have a real big decision to make and I agree with you that whatever he decides will be a right choice for him.

Not Likely

While you are correct technically, it is not as likely a scenario in the AF as it is in the Army or Marines. But Garland does need to have a serious sit down with McDaniels to get feedback on his likely prospects with the NFL if he gives up flight school, like a college player getting advice on coming out of school early. Go Garland, Go Broncos, Go Air Force, Go Together.

Thanks for the Horse Tracks!!!

It’s amazing how many Colorado natives are currently playing/trying out for Us.

B. Garland, D. Graham, J. Bannan…. Who else am I missing?

It’s sad that Ben has such a choice ahead, how his mom said ‘no matter which he chooses, he will lose a little piece of himself to the other’. Either way, he’ll obviously be happy, but I don’t think I’ll ever have to/be able to ‘pick a dream’ as it were – so he could have it a looot worse. ( =

That's quite a long handle there, G Funk. - That's what she said.

First (and only, in our lifetimes) team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! ( =

I sure took notice of the comment by Ryan Harris about Garland

How has he looked in camp to the guys from MHR that were there? That’s quite a compliment from a very good OT. And good luck Ben in whatever choice you make – you’ll be an asset to whatever you choose.

I noticed him a little bit during 11 on 11's

But he was as eager as Tebow in running sprints.

Good luck Ben!

I would have loved (and hated) that choice. But, if I read that right, even a “sports waiver” requires two years of immediate service. That means he’ll (presumably) be invited to camp in 2012, and have to start cold with two years out of football. CFA is tough already, but a CFA guy out of football for two years? Sounds like long odds; but if heart and drive is there, I wouldn’t bet against him.
