We talkin bout' pass rush?
Over the last season we've been lucky to have be witness to Doom vicious swim moves and long sticky hands getting to the quarterback to rack up a marvelous season full of sacks.
We all know he's out till November next season.
Now, as a life long Broncos fan I of course see them going 16-0 every year, but being realistic i don't think anyone thinks we can replace as many sacks as Elvis produced last year. All this being said, i think we have a great opportunity with the guys in house. Jump with me and lets learn who they are, what they can offer, and maybe some things they can work on.
A first round pick who never really came into his own, and even considered retirement. That all being said he was one of the few players that had a great offseason. Showing up looking leaner sounds to have a nice grasp of the Defensive system. He has shown glimpses of a developing pass rush and a quarterback rushes. To me he still looks like he has a couple things to work on such as getting around the tackles off the edges, he is definitely fast enough.
Last yeas first round pick must step it up and get into the quarterbacks face alot more this year. I didn't say sack i said get in his face. I think this years pass rush success will come with collapsing the pocket and getting the Quarterback scrambling. Ayers has shown MAYBE a stronger bull rush than Elvis but he lacks the combinations of swim moves, ducks, and spins that will get him closer to the Quarterback.
Hunter has apparently picked up the defense with ease, and he's already challenging to start. Even if he doesn't lock down a first-team spot, he'll see plenty of action on passing downs. He's coming off a five-sack season in Detroit, and is currently our active team's sack leader from last year, so don't be surprised to see him earn some serious playing time.
We have only been able to see him play meaningful minutes for only a 2nd half of a game, but boy did he make the most of it. He and Hunter accounted for 5 sacks in the Pittsburg game. Will he be playing like that against 1st teamers, maybe not, but one thing is for sure, he made the most of the time that was given to him.
All in all we have some interesting prospects at the Outside Linebacker position, not to mention the speedy help of Woodyard and Williams to clean up any scrabbling QBs. With a secondary like ours it gives us a little bit of a cushion to get creative with our pass rush. As far as rush defense once Jamal Williams really turns it on for the regular season and Dawkins cleaning up any leaks I believe we in better shape defensively than people think.

Great write up
Excellent evaluation. I am a little surprised that hunter picked up being an outside linebacker so fast. Granted, it was in the preseason and against backups, but are we sure he has never played the position before?
I have to admit, I have been pulling for Jarvis Moss to do well. Mostly because of how much Denver gave up to get him. Just like Alphonso Smith, I want players we actually drafted to win starting jobs. I am a bit of a homer that way, I guess.

I think he played OLB in Detroit
I’m pretty sure they switched to a 4-3 defense and he didn’t fit their mold.
He was a very pleasant surprise. I hope Joe Mays gets some good looks as well.
good post
I have been thinking about how our D could possibly make up for the 17 sacks we will be missing from the Doominator this year. It is totally doable. We, as a team, had 39 sacks last year good for 10th spot in the NFL. Take away 17 and that leaves 22 sacks that need to be made up. That’s 5.5 per guy on your list. No problem. Let’s just say they get 6.6 each this year and call it a day.
P.S. Wow. I never thought it would happen but I just turned into stat nerd.

haha
don’t worry about it. anyway, two other players that had most of the sacks – reid and … um, that DL guy that Shanny took – won’t be with the team at first either.
At any rate, I think the number to focus on is the total sack number. 39. It’s hardly an elite number. I totally think we can get there, and have thought more than once about posting total sack numbers at the end of each game and comparing them to last year.
I just read my comment. To everybody that read my comment, yes I am a moron sometimes.

Sometimes!?!?

Totally kidding…. I don’t really see what moron-ocity to which you refer. Unless you mean the part about The DL guy that Shanny took –
won’t be with the team at first either.
Because, if Shanny took him, he won’t be there at last either. Or at first. LoL… We’re all a moron at one point or another, the ones who can admit it, are that much more astute, because you can’t fix what you don’t know is broke.

Say what?
Hmmmm….quarterbacks playing scrabble? Next you’ll say they have opinions on eagle rights….or violins in America. (props to Gilda Radner).
If we're ever going to get out of here alive we're going to need some golf shoes.
wont happen
It wont happen cause 2nd stringers are going to play after both teams 1st series if not sooner.
If these are the guys, why is Atkins on the team?

His strength may or may not be Pass Rushing
But I don’t think this is Mays strength either. Yes he did get there on a couple of times the other night but that’s mostly because he came free on the blitz

Hunter
I just have a great feeling that this guy is going to be something special for us and become the starter.
Then on 3rd downs I expect Moss and Hunter on the outside. Robert Ayers to move to the inside and for Marcus Thomas or Jarvis Green to switch off on the interior.
Hunter looked great against Pittsburgh. He was the one getting pressure on Goodman’s interception. He also played the run fairly well and showed multiple pass rushing moves which I love Jarvis and think he’s awesome but Jarvis’ game is mostly a speed game. Holy crap run on sentence.

Thats what worries me
Jarvis’ game is based on speed and if he doesn’t grasp that fact and stop trying to run through guy instead of around them he might be a little quiet this season. I hope he realizes he has that speed and can start going wide on the o-linemen
Pass Rush?!
Pass Rush?!?!
Don’t talk about Pass Rush!?
Pass rush?!
I just hope we can stop the run!

"but being realistic i don't think anyone thinks we can replace as many sacks as Elvis produced last year."
I don’t think it’s about replacing his sacks. We need guys to step up and play well and pressure the QB, but if I were a betting man, I wouldn’t count on Doom himself notching 17 this year. It could happen, but that’s a huge number and it’s very rare that it could be consistently reached season after season.
That being said, good article, and I think Ayers is starting to show more than he has. If Moss or Mays can step up and play well we might be in very good shape moving forward. My main concern a few weeks ago was our LB corps, but it’s starting to look like it could be an asset even with Doom out.
This probably seems crazy
But I would move DJ outside and probably start Mays inside at this point. DJ has some good ability and speed to rush the passer, and he is the best cover LB we have, so he can cover the TE and back coming out on his side.

I still think DJ has better coverage ability, but WW is definately a close 2nd (IMO)

How'd We Do Last Preseason?
I didn’t the preseason very closely last year, so I don’t know if we racked up a bunch of sacks or not—let alone who got them. But from what I’ve seen this year, I’m very optimistic. Like you, I don’t expect anyone to put up 17 sacks. But I do think the team will have more total sacks this year than last. Partly from Wink being more aggressive, but mostly from having a better crew of players to mix and match in pressure situations.
Nice analysis. Thanks for posting it.

They then laugh at you.
Then they fight you.
Then, you win.

With regards to Ayers
Will those swim moves, ducks, and spins come with experience?
