My Evaluation of the Jacksonville Game

Ok, well I had to wait until I was finished with my initial frustration and fury to make this post so i could think logically. Right after a loss like that, I have dumb thoughts like, "We completely suck..oh well there's always next year..", or, "I don't know how we'll win a game this year..". But now that I've had some time to settle down, I think I can make a fair assessment of the game, and what the rest of the year will be like.

Orton played pretty damn well if you ask me. Obviously he had a pick, and that was a dumb decision, but overall he looked good. I liked how he spread the ball better than in the past. The three starting receivers - Gaffney, Lloyd, and Royal - had 7, 8, and 10 targets, respectively. An issue that most people involved with the Broncos had, especially us fans, was that Royal was too talented to be getting so little looks. From this game, at least, it looks as though that has been fixed. In my opinion, he definitely looked a bit like the Wes Welker type we expect him to be. 98 yards receiving for Royal tonight.

I am excited for the return of Demaryius Thomas, though. I fully expect him to become a large part of the offense some time this season. I'm thinking that will happen sooner rather than later. Thomas will be the type of receiver that is always a threat going down the field. I personally love the idea of Thomas and Gaff on the outside with Royal at the slot. I am also hopeful that Decker will get involved with the offense sometime this season.

There are some players I am VERY disappointed with after this game. One of them is Buckhalter. I mean COME ON! We were almost definitely going to score on that drive, and get some momentum for ourselves. But instead he coughs it up and the Jags get the momentum. I honestly think we would have won or at least taken the game to OT if this mistake doesn't happen.

Another player that isn't my favorite right now is an obvious one - McBean. What he did is something you just straight up DO NOT DO EVER. It is never necessary to grab the ball-carrier's facemask, but I understand it will happen once in a great while, obviously as an accident. But it should and can not happen TWICE in the same game, let alone the same drive. Ryan had the same production for the Jaguars as Rashad Jennings (both 30 yards).

Another obvious statement is that our kick coverage must improve. Jacksonville averaged 34.3 yards per kick return, including one for 53. That can't happen, we are simply giving them a shorter field and making our D's job much tougher.

Now to someone who i was actually impressed with. KNOWSHON. He had some good runs, and ended up with 15 carries for 60 yards (4.0 average) and a rushing TD. Now, this isn't incredible by any means but he's not 100% and you could see that in the way he ran. Once he is totally healthy, I expect him to look even better and get more and more breakaway runs. Another issue that he had was that the O-line is not at its best right now. Even though I am confident in KnoMo, I think that one of our early draft picks in 2011 will be a runningback. I think that with a quicker option to go beside Moreno, we would be much more dangerous.

Ryan Harris is EXTREMELY important to the offense. We all remember what happened when we lost him last year..and I think once we get him back this year, the offense will improve in both rushing and passing. Beadles is much better at guard in my opinion, at least at this point. He is still a rookie and needs more experience to be put out there at tackle.

I think that we will still be good this year, I predict 9-7 still, possibly even 10-6. If we do not win next week, then I will start to get worried. But I believe that we will win next week. My prediction is 35-17 Denver.

But I want to point something out. Even if we miss the playoffs, even if we get there but lose right away..We will be a dominant team in 2011. We are so young, and I think we are very close to being an elite team, and taking the AFC West back. Think about what will happen when the team has all of these players together in sync...Kyle Orton, Moreno, our very young O-line, Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Eddie Royal, Matthew Willis, Elvis Dumervil, Robert Ayers, Perrish Cox, Darcel McBath, David Bruton...I see a Super Bowl in the next few years..

Go Broncos!
