Outside of Tebow's first two drives
A good offensive game by all three quarterbacks. Our running game struggled again, as did the offensive line. Not a bad game, but it goes to show you can outplay a team, but turnovers can really screw you over.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
We had a stellar game only losing by a score
considering how many times We turned it over.

Agreed
And we almost came back, in those last two drives, Quinn was kinda clutch.

Right
There were a few on-target passes that were dropped. Not the greatest O-Line play, and he still stepped it up.

Personally
I think We could do with two QB’s on the roster… I am very curious to find out if We keep 3 on the 53.

I'd rather keep Cox, Vaughn & Thompson...
than Quinn.

Why
More teams keep three quarterbacks, then overstock the DB position.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
We can dump Quinn and sign some scrub....
for much less. Brandstater perhaps (assuming the colts cut him)… There’s gonna be someone of equal quality on waivers tomorrow morning.
Quinn isn't making much
Actually very little if he doesn’t start. There isn’t a need to keep another DB, we are already deep there.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
In 2009 he made over $2 Million...
I believ we assumed his rookie contract and to that end would likely end up paying him more than that this year?
I’m factoring in his bonuses as well in the $2 Million #…. Base was at $655 K. Assuming no bonuses this year, he’d probably make close to a million this year.
We can get a free agent for the leage minimum. Instant savings.
Of course this is also why it would be difficult to trade him.
J
Hes not going anywhere...
Quinn is scheduled to make $700,000 each of the next 2 years as long as he doesnt become the starter. No point in cutting him for that price.
brandstater
is probably not getting cut, many are calling for him to be qb 2 on stamped blue
free special ed.
I can see Cox and Thompson
But I’d be willing to put Vaughn on PS and risk the waiver-wire.

Didn't watch the game but
Alphonso led our team in tackles and had a pick?
How is this a bad showing?
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
It wasn't
He got his legs tangled on a long pass to Walker and had an illegal contact penalty; he also was in the backfield, made a nice pick, and on one series was targeted three times and all three passes were covered.
I need to get my hands on the game.

I thought
Smith looked good. He made a nice play on the interception. Covered well and made some good tackles. The TD by Walker was a fluke. Their legs got tangled. Coulda happened to Champ too. I guess haters are gonna hate. Should make for some tough choices at DB.

I didn't think you could use a self-portrait in these posts....
Seriously, What difference does it make? Either Smith makes the team or not. What difference does it make? You can still have your Cerrios in teh morning.
McD said before the game on the radio that they could keep 11 DBs. Now that would blow some minds…..
I guess I am pulling for Smith precisely because so many “fans” woud be PO’d……..
Yeah I think Smith showed some heart tongiht actually
He was slow getting off the field twice, but hung in there all night and got the INT and recovered the fumble late. He did fall down and allowed a TD and made a bad penalty on 3rd down late in the game, but I still think he’s done enough and has enough potential to deserve a spot on the roster.
He gave up the TD pass
but he saved the pass on that insane QB scramble with a nice shed and tackle.
by BroncosBassist on Sep 3, 2010 4:09 AM MDT up reply actions
I'm pulling for him
…because he seems to be around the ball an awful lot, showed great hands on that pick, is beginning to cover quite well, and seems to get better the more he’s on the field. I’d be very surprised to see him go.
I also liked Vaughn on kickoff returns and special teams; we are clearly very very deep in the secondary at corner. What’s going on with McBath is going to determine how many corners we keep; Nate Jones can play both corner and safety, so it’s going to be quite interesting.
gah...the running game scares the hell out of me.
I’m not getting all up in arms about it, but it’s definitely not reassuring at this point.

No, it's not
But, hey – maybe that’s part of McD’s strategy. Look really crappy in the run game in preseason… Then three games into the season, everyone’s wondering why Kyle hasn’t thrown 12 TD’s by then with all the points We’ve scored.
Woah, that was a pretty cool little utopia you just helped make in my head.

The short yardage is what scares me...
We couldn’t get 3rd or 4th and short to save our lives last year, and I had flashbacks to that on the 2 goal line runs. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt until the line and running backs are healthy, but I have a bad feeling short yardage might still be a problem this season.
Enter Tim Tebow.....
Just the simple threat of him running can be enough to force the D to commit.
He doesn’t even have to actually run it ;)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Alphonso Smith
He got the INT, he recovered the fumble late in the game, and even though he made some mistakes he continued to battle the entire game even while a little banged up.
I think he has too much potential, and the Broncos used too high of a draft pick on him to just cut the guy lose. I look at Jarvis Moss and how bad he’s look for his first few seasons to only have him seemingly primed to be a big contributer on defense this season.

DB situation
Interesting predicament for McDaniels regarding the DB’s. We will be Champ-less pretty soon…and with all that young talent you just have to keep these guys around to replace our aging secondary. But SOMEBODY has to go…Alphonso Smith was a mistake, but who knew he wouldn’t make the transition? It’s always a risk. This year’s rookies are REALLY impressive!

The secret to Brady Quinn's success
Pass to Decker.
Pass to Decker.
Pass to Decker.
Handoff to Bruce Hall.
Pass to Decker.
Pass to Geer.
Pass to Decker.
On a serious note though, I was pleasantly surprised how poised Quinn looked for a change, but he’s gotta spread it around a bit more.
"All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses." Friedrich Nietzsche
Reminded me of Orton
Last year Orton targeted Marshall like that.
Victor Frankl:
What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him.
Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
Yes
Quinn did lock in on the few guys he threw to. The improvement that I saw, was he finally began making quick decisions and got rid of the ball. What an improvement. Only McD can decide who the #2 will be, but my money’s on Tebow.
"All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses." Friedrich Nietzsche
Why?
They were saying that about Orton and Marshall, then Orton and Gaffney. Now Quinn and Decker?
Hey, if it’s working, why change it? Start passing to someone else for the sake of passing to someone else? Notice you kept saying pass to Decker, not incompletion to Decker. If you find a hole, keep going to it until they stop you. They found a hole . . .
BILLY THOMPSON GOT SHAFTED!!
Easy there
just tongue-in-cheek. I was pleasantly surprised how much more poised he looked tonight. He finally played the way I thought he could. He just locked into his receivers, but he did throw more decisively, and was accurate.
"All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses." Friedrich Nietzsche
Didn't Tebow keep finding Willis and it was called chemisty?
Quinn finds Decker and it’s a bad thing, make up your mind.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
Someone rolled into the back of his leg
It looked like he hurt his ankle. Not sure how bad, but he was walking around pretty gingerly on the sideline. His leg injury didn’t look as bad as LenDale White though who had to be helped off the field and looked like he couldn’t put any weight on the leg.
Who got the lone INT?
Phonz?

1-of-5 on 4th down. So, if we combine them, like I do during the season, the Broncos were 7-18(38.9%). Gotta keep that number at or above 45%

Good God I just read ESPN's preview and just puked in my mouth...
Then I stopped looking at Williamson’s picture and puked again because of the absolute manure these guys spew.
How come EVERY YEAR they pick the Chiefs or the Raiders ahead of us and they suck? EVERY YEAR. We get better and they’ve made “bigger strides.”
Oakland got a QB that the REDSKINS didn’t want anymore and all of a sudden they’re the 2nd place team in the division.
This is ridiculous.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
I have one question
How bad is Darcel McBath injured
McBath...
Completely guessing here, but the Broncos could be waiting to put him on IR until he won’t have to go through Waivers… The opposite of the Barrett situation.

all due to poor footwork, more than bad decisions or bad throws. When he keeps his momentum moving forward instead of backward when he throws he is fine.

I'm liking what I'm seeing
and it makes me enthused about the team’s future. I wasn’t originally happy with the draft pick, since I liked what Orton had accomplished in his first year and we had just traded for Quinn, but I got on board right after and now I’m sold.
Take my advice... I'm not using it!
"If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague."
Kevin O'Connell
…is still without a team since being axed by the Jets. He knows McDaniels and would come cheap.
It’s really not fair to Quinn to keep him around. If he’s up to it, fine…but he has to own a television. He sees trash like Anderson and Leinart vying for a starting gig. He’s better than them. He’s better than quite a few opening day starters. Let him go somewhere and be a 2 for somebody with a thinner stable.
I’m also sickened at the prospect of getting nothing for Zo Smith but he just isn’t good enough. I guess McD played mind games with Colquitt last year and could do the same thing again with Thompson or Vaughn, but hopefully he realized it would behoove him to actually stick to his “best 53 players” mantra.
FWIW
Quinn couldn’t start ahead of Anderson in Cleveland.
The problem with Quinn is much like the issue the Cards have with Leinart…Neither will take a shot downfield. They prefer to dink and dunk.
For instance, tonight – Tebow completed two fewer passes for 18 MORE yards than Quinn. May not seem like much, but that is nearly two extra first downs. It’s what drives coaches crazy, especially when they look at the tape and see big plays missed.

How often did Orton go downfield
…last preseason and early in the regular season? Quinn isn’t yet comfortable with the offense. Tebow is operating on a really watered-down version, imo. Lots of improvisations. Relying on his freakish ability.
Quinn was mishandled in Cleveland. He’s better than Anderson. I don’t think he’s great but it just doesn’t feel right to let him rot on our bench.
I agree...
on Quinn in Cleveland. Every time he had a chance, however, he got hurt. In 2007, he played against the Broncos, played well, then faced the Bills the next week and broke his finger. Done for the year. In 2008, same thing, broke a bone in his foot.
I thought he would come on strong in 2009, but again, he didn’t attack downfield. His favorite target was Kellen Winslow, and when the Browns traded him they had nothing.
As for the offense, it is similar to the Charlie Weis offense, and Quinn’s problems go beyond playbook. He has struggled making decisions against upper-echelon talent. Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, LSU in the Sugar Bowl.
I like Brady Quinn, and I think he can be fixed with the right coaching, but right now, where is a better situation for him??

Phonz looked good tonight
except for one penalty. People need to actually watch the game and lear what they are talking about.

Thanks for fighting the good fight, gnarly
So many people are down on him after what I thought was his best game yet. He was good in coverage (other than the penalty, which I didn’t see) and made some great plays. Oh, well. I guess everyone else doesn’t get to cheer with us if he makes a play in the regular season.

Sperry
Why didn’t he ever get a look? Had a stellar game filling in for Fasano last year. Seemed like the most offensively adept by default. Though NE-style offenses don’t really value pass-catching TEs, so then the question becomes why he was even brought on.
Will McDaniels admit failure with both Smith AND Quinn? Richard, not Brady. Most coaches are too prideful to ditch high draft picks, but he’s not most coaches.
Quinn, The TE
Quinn was brought in as more of a blocking TE than receiving one. he’s shown he can do that too. Think Daniel Graham. I know, I know, people will say that Graham is a good receiver -he’s decent, but when he was winning Titles in NE, it was as a blocker. Denver gave him a ton of money to come in a catch the ball…
As for bringing a guy on, with 80-man rosters, you need someone on the field in meaningless games…

I get that
…but the hometown angle makes it all convoluted. He had a couple teams interested and chose Denver. Obviously McD could care less about where he’s from, but his agent wasn’t really doing his job if he let his client get his hopes up just to end up being a body in camp.
Sperry was claimed off of waivers
means he didn’t really have a choice of where he was going

haha
well, I kind of called my predictions :)
I predict that Tebow plays well.
And that someone will aggravate their injury. :-(
And that Smith will play well, but that people here will insist he isn’t. ha ha :)
you were 100%
right on the 3rd one. People are just blinded by their hate for the guy. its either that or they are just plain stupid

Finally, for those bitching about Smith/Earl Thomas
Earl Thomas makes nearly as much guaranteed as DT and Tebow combined. Things happen for a reason and I’m glad we have the guys we do.
I know people will nail me for not being fully behind Orton,
and in truth, I am. When hes out there I want him to do well. But I cannot wait until TT is starting.
Making sense of it all takes a whole lot a concentration
Good game tonight, folks
I hope that none of the injuries you guys came out of this one with end up being serious.
Saw someone earlier lamenting that the Chiefs and the Raiders were being picked ahead of the Broncos in some circles. I can say we know exactly how you feel. . .somehow, during the off-season, the Green Bay Packers became the most awesome team in football or something. I’m not sure how many people are buying it, but it’s a bit frustrating to see after we slapped the taste out of their collective mouths twice last year and not really seeing them do anything to close the gap all that much.
From an outsider’s point of view, the AFC West is going to be interesting. . .I think the Vincent Jackson thing will have a much bigger effect on the Chargers than a lot of people are anticipating, and all four teams have a real shot, I think.
So. . .you guys have any spare CBs you’d like to trade for some of our D-linemen? (-:

Letroy Guion
Kid we took in the 6th round out of Florida State back in ‘08. . .came out a year early, and probably shouldn’t have. Didn’t do much as a rookie, got a little more time last year.
I’m not sure how many defensive tackles they’re planning on keeping. . .but between the Williams Wall, Guion, Jimmy Kennedy (who’s undergone quite the renaissance in Minnesota) and Fred Evans. . .I don’t think they all make the team.
The Vikings are going to cut some really talented defensive linemen over the next couple of days. . .I hope that they trade at least one of them first.

yea we hav a similar situation with our CB's
but its hard to trade when so many bodies are going to be there without costing draft picks
I tweeted...
that a damn-good D-Lineman or two was going to be made available. Can’t believe the talent you guys have up there, and that doesn’t even include the Williams’ or Jared Allen!

It's more of a testament to Karl Dunbar than anything
I’ll put that guy’s abilities as a defensive line coach against any d-line coach in the league. I mean, outside of Kevin Williams (first rounder), Pat Williams (free agency), and Jared Allen (trade), the Vikings’ d-linemen are
Ray Edwards (4th round)
Brian Robison (4th round)
Fred Evans (6th round by Miami)
Letroy Guion (6th round)
Tremaine Johnson (undrafted free agent)
Jayme Mitchell (undrafted free agent)
Everson Griffen (4th round)
Jimmy Kennedy (flopped everywhere he played before getting to Minnesota)
The guy can straight-up coach. . .I’m surprised that he’s not a defensive coordinator somewhere.

Sometimes, a great position coach is just that
They should continue doing what they do because they are the best at it.
Broncos fans should think Alex Gibbs.

Yeah I think we have a couple of DBs we can trade...
Webb is a great find. I hope you can hide him somewhere or do you think you’ll keep 4 QB’s?

I don't think they're going to try to sneak him onto the PS
After all, if we couldn’t sneak Tyler (blank)ing Thigpen onto the practice squad a couple of years ago, there’s no way in heck Webb makes it there.
The guy is a freakish athlete, though. . .there’s room on the roster for him somewhere. I have the feeling that, by Saturday, either Jackson or Rosenfels will be packing their bags. Which one? Well. . .that depends on what Viking fan you ask on what day and at what time.

That sounds familiar...
My money is on Jackson. I’ve watched a couple of your games and Sage wasn’t impressive. You guys look like you have great depth at RB too.

What if the Broncos make the playoffs this year and win the Super Bowl in ’12? Still clamoring for Tebow then?
Tebow is raw. Starting sooner than later would hurt the team. On the same token, he’ll be more than the ‘Wildcat gimmick’ most are pigeonholing him as. He’s going to play a lot. He and Orton will form a revolutionary duo.
Well I would hardly say I'm clamoring
I just like the guy and look forward to the day he starts. Whoever goes out every week I support.
Making sense of it all takes a whole lot a concentration
It'll be something
when it does happen. I’m glad you’re supporting whoever takes the field but it feels like a ton of ‘fans’ are Tebow all the way and are rooting against Kyle. Going to be an interesting year.
Not me...
I am a huge supporter of KO’s. Have been for a long time…

Rooting against Kyle, to me, disqualifies one from being a 'Bronco fan'
Making sense of it all takes a whole lot a concentration
Well . . . yes, but we have to be careful . . .
Being critical of a player and rooting against him can be two entirely different things. I have taken up my debate in support of KO against people who expected him to fail but dearly wanted to be wrong about it. They are fans, trust me . . .
BILLY THOMPSON GOT SHAFTED!!
I wonder if White's injury is bad enough, do we pick up another back?
Making sense of it all takes a whole lot a concentration
white was already suspended
free special ed.
He’s missing the first 4 weeks anyway, so the Broncos knew going in that they had a roster spot to spare…

I’m an idiot. I didn’t realize and missed everything… the whole game. Can one of you give me a long breakdown of what happened. Sorry. And thanks!
It's just about time for us to get out there and win a MF Game!
Thanks John..
I rec’d your comment above, the first, but it should turn green with some help (?). Thanks for the breakdown. I should have read before commenting. Can you tell me more about the receivers?
It's just about time for us to get out there and win a MF Game!
Short synopsis
We would have won, short of the turnovers. :)
First team offense sputtered a bit, but did ok. Clady played, but looked a bit rusty. He’ll be fine. We had MORE injuries (White and Harris had what appear to be ankle injuries, with White’s being worse). Decker/Quinn made a hell of a combo later in the game — many of us are stoked for his future for sure, now. Likewise, Tebow and Willis made a habit of eating up the secondary. Willis had some ridiculous numbers like 5 for 122 and a TD, I think. One was a beautiful deep toss near the pylon that Willis caught and made an athletic move to break the plane for the score.
Running game was still weak. Defense actually played pretty well, though Minnesota didn’t play many of their starters. Erase Webb’s broken play scrambles and we held their offense to not much. I think our starting DBs sat from the get-go, though I can’t be sure. I didn’t start watching till halfway through the first. Didn’t see or hear anything about Cox, but that’s usually good for a CB. I think I remember Squid making some plays. Smith played his best game, with a pick that he nearly took to the house (only the super-speedy Webb caught him) and otherwise good coverage, but many are screeching for him to be cut because he had an illegal contact penalty on 3rd down and his feet got tangled as he was coming out of his backpeddal and he tripped on a long TD pass. There wasn’t a safety to be seen on the play.
I didn’t see him much, but some say Ayers had a good game. Everyone was really excited about Beadles, but I’m not 100% sure why (I wasn’t watching him, and I was on a small-sized internet feed). He came in for Harris, if I’m not mistaken, when he went out.
Ugly game. We lost, but shouldn’t have. In fact, Riar Geer dropped the (potentially, assuming the PAT) touchdown inside the 10 or 15 yard-line from Quinn. Wide open, and would AT LEAST have gotten the 1st, if not the TD. He just didn’t look the ball in — it hit him in his hands, and this was 4th down with 50 or so seconds on the clock. Not the way to win a roster spot in Denver or anywhere.
I’m sure there is some I missed. There was a LOT going on in this game, as you’d expect from a bunch of guys fighting for their roster lives.

I meant to say that that Webb cat is an athletic freak
Fast — I puckered every time he looked to scramble. His accuracy numbers on the preseason are bad, though. I think the put up a graphic at one point that said he had completed like 57% of his passes. Just keep contain when he’s in.

Also forgot
Cassius Vaughn showed up a little — had a nice looking kick return to near mid field. He’s probably bound for the PS. A lot of us jokingly complained about the play because we didn’t want him to get snatched up after wavers so we could stash him there. :)

Incorrect stats
You turnover stat is incorrect. The Vikings had 2 turnovers. Alphonso Smith had an interception and there was the Minnesota fumble late in the 4th.
