2010 NFL Cutdown Day Open Thread #1

We'll move this post around as the names of those released begin to filter in.  If the comments add up to necessitate a new thread, I'll start one.

Here are the names of the Denver Broncos that have reportedly been cut:

CUT

DT Chris Baker
LB Jammie Kirlew
TE Kory Sperry
TE Nate Overbay
OL Paul Duncan
LB Johnny Williams
WR Alric Arnett

INJURED RESERVE

RB LenDale White
OLB Elvis Dumervil

After today's moves, the Broncos stand at 64 players.  They need to be at 53-man limit by 5:00pm MT on Saturday.

Big Questions

The three biggest question marks in my mind are Brandon Stokley, Nate Jones, and Alphonso Smith. If they do get cut, I’m guessing that it won’t be until tomorrow.

by troycdunn on Sep 3, 2010 12:47 PM MDT reply actions

The guys...

who won’t get named until tomorrow are usually guys the team wants to put on the PS. If it is a vet, like Stokley for instance, no need to wait. The only caveat is a move made in reaction to a cut another team made.

Say, for instance, the Broncos decided to keep a player named Jim Smith. That is, until a team cut a player that the Broncos thought was better than Jim Smith. You could see a late cut in reaction to another team’s move in order to put a claim in on that player…

Agreed

I believe that the waiver clock starts counting down as soon as they are cut. Hence, the players cut today will actually be available for PS signing a day ahead of the rest of the cuts on Saturday. And by cutting today McD/X try to sneak these players into the mix when others teams are too busy with their own cuts to take good notice of what is happening with the 31 other teams.

I could see 4 from the above being put on PS – Baker, Kirlew, Sperry, Arnet

CORRECTED INFO on 24 hour waiver period

8-man Practice Squad:

After all teams have set their 53-man rosters prior to opening day and each team has passed 24-hours on acquiring the contracts of every other player waived by the other 31 NFL teams, each team may sign up to 8 players to occupy its developmental Practice Squad.

PRACTICE SQUAD players can not be signed before Sunday/

Thanks God Warnick...GREAT post. Its one of the reasons I seldom post anymore....

The hate and ridicule for certain players by some members here is beyond a joke. It makes no sense. I WILL give kudos to McG who has mellowed on the calls to gut and quarter Smith. He has been pretty reasonable of late. But man…..what is up with the hate for OUR Bronco players. People need to settle the F&*K down!

I don’t think I criticized you, however I did think he would make the team. With the age of Jamal and having the gun toter as his backup, I felt we had to keep him. Hopefully they have their eyes on someone else, which would be just fine with me. I just want some sort of youth in that position as a backup.

Nope, I'm not sorry for hoping he'd pan out

Not even remotely, given how bad our line was looking in 08. Hope was nearly all we had.

But if they let him go, they must be confident in the depth in front of him. Maybe he’ll make the practice squad. Maybe not. But ultimately I trust team McX to evaluate talent, especially what we’ve seen from them in free agency and this year’s draft.

In good times and bad times, I'm a Bronco fan. Sucka.

Baker is a huge disappointment.

I’d hoped he would take some strides this offseason, but he showed nothing in the preseason. Hopefully he’ll clear waivers and we can stick him on the PS.

by Joe Kayser on Sep 3, 2010 12:49 PM MDT reply actions

that's it

My advocacy for or against a particular player has a lifetime of about 3 seconds. Baker showed something in last year’s final pre-season game but showed nothing this pre-season. I had advocated for keeping Baker up prior to shortly before the last game, because of the importance of depth at NT. My support for him weakened in response to the counterargument that other DLs could play NT. And it weakened even further while watching his lack of contribution against Minnesota.

Roster projections are transient things, and players’ stock often rises or falls faster than the time it takes to write about the subject. In other words, every performance counts. Baker could have earned a spot with a stellar final game — but he didn’t perform.

"the megalomaniac view of oneself as the Elect, wholly good, abominably persecuted, yet assured of ultimate triumph; the attribution of gigantic and demonic powers to the adversary; the refusal to accept the ineluctable limitations and imperfections of human existence, such as transience, dissention, conflict, fallibility whether intellectual or moral; the obsession with inerrable prophecies…systematized misinterpretations, always gross and often grotesque." – Norman Cohn - quoted in The Paranoid Style in American Politics

by Colinski on Sep 3, 2010 2:38 PM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

Of course every performance counts but

a comprehensive evaluation of a player, which is the goal, comes down to more than a mediocre game against the Vikings. I don’t think a player’s evaluation, certainly by the Broncos coaching staff, is nearly as fundamentally fickle as you portray.

by swg777 on Sep 3, 2010 2:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Chris Baker did not hit the weight room to get stronger in the upper body.

He just showed no strength at attacking or even holding the gap. We will see if Wayne (Nunnley DL coach) see’s any value by putting him on PS.

Philly has better front 7 D players than us

Mays was unlikely to make the Eagles 53; so not a bad trade for them – getting a draft pick.

For us, ? We needed better special teams players, so if Mays can also be more than a specialist (can he pass cover decently for a LB?), then it will be a win for both teams.

I like our young WR corp potential.

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 having Andre Johnson like potential and 1 having Darius Heyword-Bay like potential I’d say:

D. Thomas 10/10
E. Royal 10/10
P. Willis 9/10
E. Decker 9/10

In terms of potential only. Not a current rating.

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

by ChristianL on Sep 3, 2010 2:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Really?

That might be a bit rose colored there, even if it is potential. I know that they were drafted by the Broncos, but that doesn’t automatically make them future Hall of Famers.

AJ Smith can draft, and he can swing a mean deal (the two times the Chargers traded out of the #1 overall pick went a long way towards their last 10 years or so of sucess). But when have they had a decent coach to lead them anywhere in the postseason (and Marty Schottenheimer doesn’t qualify as a decent coach – if you disagree I’ll point you to their loss to the Patriots int he playoffs in which they were totally unprepared).

If they ever get a decent coach, we’re really screwed then.

I don't understand the facination with Baker????

He’s played two preseasons and has not looked anything but pedestrian against mostly second and third string offensive linemen. I don’t get it.

Also, I will eat crow for the whole year if Nate Jones is cut, traded, or otherwise. He’s been the starting nickle all camp, he’s versitle, and, other than one or two penalites, he hasn’t stood out at all in the games (which is a great thing for a CB). IMHO, Nate Jones will make this team and be productive all year. I actually find it releiving to have a nickle that is under the radar. I can’t remember how many times the #1 name called on the defense the last couple years was Bly, Jack W, Paymah, Ty Law, Zo Smith, etc. Other teams threw on these guys every down. It’s great he hasn’t “stood out” (which is actually a criticism I’ve heard on here).

Won't bow. Don't know how.

On Baker

He had a couple pretty good games last pre season but there was a huge drop off this one. Also I was fascinated with him due to his sheer size/athleticism especially in comparing him to the low potential and smaller than normal NT’s we already had on the roster. Here’s to hoping we draft a good one in ’11!!!

by DBroncs1414 on Sep 3, 2010 2:16 PM MDT up reply actions

It's the "upside" excitement.

It’s fun to imagine your team pulling a fast one over the whole league by drafting a talented guy who falls in the draft due to personal issues and then turns out to be a stud. Sometimes you get a talent like Brandon Marshall in the 4th round… but sometimes you get a person like Brandon marshall in the 3rd round.

And while we’re on the subject of character issues, and keeping in mind our lack of RB depth… Anyone notice Maurice Clarett’s out of prison and free to travel for football purposes:

will be released or traded by Seattle. WOW. That’s surprising for sure. I would expect KC and Oakland to try and nab him.

The 7 cuts are the primary PS candidates

Baker, Kirlew, Sperry, Overbay, Duncan, Williams, Arnett are all likely to be and eligible for the eight man PS. You would want to cut these guys today so that they can be signed back Saturday. A team can only sign its PS squad once it has cleared the roster to 53. PS players have to clear waivers (24 hours). That Willis isn’t on this list means either 1) the Broncos are trying to trade him or 2) (and more likely) Stokely will be cut Saturday morning (if he can’t be traded). Should any of these 7 cut players not clear waivers, the Broncos will make their next cut of a PS candidate ASAP. Not entirely clear why you would not try to clear 8 guys now rather than 7. But if I had to bet, unless these guys are claimed, these 7 will be the guys signed back on Saturday afternoon. Also keep in mind that a PS player is barely yours; all a team has to do to grab one of your PS guys is sign them to their 53 man roster at any time during the season.

sunday

I dont think you can sign the players until 24 hours after the deadline tomorrow.

by kimbertr on Sep 3, 2010 5:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Maybe 7

To leave a slot open to sign another teams cut player to the broncos practice squad? just a thought.

by broncos314 on Sep 3, 2010 6:59 PM MDT up reply actions

The last 11 to be cut...

1-8) Bruce Hall, Britt Davis, Seth Olsen, Ben Garland, Jeff Stehle, Worrell Williams, Kevin Alexander, and Kyle McCarthy.

The other 3 are to close to call.
1) Brandon Stockley, if he doesn’t go on the IR or retire.
2) Richard Quinn and Riar Geer, 1 on the active roster and the other to the PS.
3) Eric Olsen and Russ Hochstein. Olsen more then likely because we could put Eric on the PS.

We have other options with Doom, Ried, and Stockley all could go on the IR or PUP list.

Of the last 11, the top 8 for the PS would be: Hall, Davis, Geer, Eric Olsen, (Garland or Stehle), W.Williams, Alexander, and McCarthy.

Yeah. Seeking a 5th round pick.

We must really like Squid and Cox.

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

God if we trade him for a fifth...

Let’s just say I hope McGeorge serves his crow seasoned well.

I re-watched the Vikings game, focusing on Phonz, and was impressed with his play.

Especially the one where he went around the OT and tackled the RB behind the line of scrimmage. This is for people that say he can’t tackle.

Anyway, I’m intrigued by this development. I may have been underestimating Squid.

Me too

I don’t like the idea of trading a young guy with a lot of upside, even if he’s been disappointing so far, in favor of keeping a veteran. I don’t like it in baseball and I don’t like it in football. Now if he nabbed a player in trade, a player that fit something that was more of a pressing need, like say a power RB, then I’d be more okay with the idea. But I’d rather trade Nick Jones. Who I think has some good value as well.

this makes sense

We have too many good DBs, gotta trade someone. I assume Cox and Thompson have more upside for us than they do trade value. That leaves Jones or Phonz as trade candidates, whichever one we get better relative value for (I suppose goodman too, though that seem unlikely and undesirable). A fifth for phonz seems pretty fair. Not sure what fair value for Jones would be, though obviously more than phonz.

It might be selling low on phonz for sure, but if we have better young DBs ahead of him, he won’t improve anyway.

It appears as though it will soon be 63

Not for good reasons. Marquez Branson apparently suffered a serious knee injury, and could go on IR. Dumervil is going on IR. Could even be 62 if we trade Alphonso Smith. That means we would need to find a flipping tight end who can catch passes. Too bad Sperry didn’t get a better look in the pre-season.
