59, eh?
I’d love to see a projected depth chart so I can visualize the numbers. Anybody got one handy?
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
If someone owned an ICEE truck and wanted to kidnap me, I'd let them.
Secondary
Sure looks to me like they are making room for a last day deal of significance. Also looks like they are keeping their Secondary loaded to make some trades after cuts.

Best players make the team
It’ll be interesting to see if any deals go down and who we might pick up…
So I see you rolled your way into the semis?

The Seth Olson thing is weird. Can’t tell if he is no good, or McD knows what be has in h and wanted to see more of the other guys. I think it is the former.

Trades?
It seems like we have some decent trade bait…Too bad we couldn’t package Stokes and Phonz for a decent running back.
Regardless, I think we are about to see a ton of veterans released across the NFL. A couple of the guys who do make the team are likely to be cut later as we shop the castoffs.
Man...
Just saw Andrew Mason mention McKinley… totally forgot he was still with the team as well (on IR ofcourse, but still).

That didn’t help the confidence of a player that was losing it fast.

I didn't have it in for him per se.
But that whole trade our 2010 1st for Seattle’s 2009 2nd was what drove me crazy. If we had won the superbowl, that is still a bad trade IMHO. I really wish he had been good enough to justify that move and I would have loved to see him become the ball hawking special teams star that McD thought he could be. The bright side is that we have a couple of young DB’s who appear to fit that description perfectly.
Some people got nothing to be angry about so they're angry about nothing.
Many did, unfortunately.
Not necessarily here, but elsewhere.

we all know the draft can be a crap shoot sometimes
if you believe you see something that has potential you should be willing to take a risk some times. Most players drafted end up on different teams down the road. Playing it safe i dont think wins championships.
"Iron sharpens Iron."
Seriously Binary?
You seriously think the fans contributed to his play on the field or his confidence?
Quick Lesson., The players dont give a crap what the fans think. You’re kidding yourself if you think they do.
But lets just say you’re right and I’m wrong. Do you really want this guy working the corner when Peyton Manning is zinging passes his way all day. I sure dont. Not when the fans hurt his confidence.
You probably get this a lot. This isn't the real Caesar's Palace is it?....Did Caesar live here?

Yes, I'm serious.
It was clear that he had a, lets say, “fragile” ego. And, if doesn’t hurt for fans to stop calling a guy a bum once in while. That’s all he’d hear if he read the newspaper or listening to the radio, people calling him a bum.
Players do take notice of what other people say.

I just dont think he was ever that good.
Either way. If I came across as rude I apologize. I just dont like the excuses Im seeing made on here today. WE should call a spade a spade and say that this was a huge error made on MCD. Drafting two other corners who look good in preseason shouldnt be a get out of jail free card.

You're right.
My only problem is losing a player that is young and clearly has talent – he could still live up to his potential. If in 10 years, he retires as a multiple pro-bowler, fans will probably look back at this like the Broncos were idiots to trade him for a backup (presumably) TE, but it makes sense right now.
They have amazing depth at the position, and evidently believe they have something special in Cox and Squid. Fix a need, and possibly get a draft pick, too.

about the here and now
We’re no longer in the rebuilding mode, and I don’t expect the staff to show much patience with any player who ‘might’ show ability down the road. Smith did some good things but he went into brainlock last year and never emerged. He’s perfectly capable of developing still but they’re not going to wait on someone who isn’t learning. A change of scenery might be what he needs to hit the reset on his football brain.

Gronkowski’s blocking prowess is the byproduct of his incredible strength. The former prep quarterback registered the second-highest strength index on the team in spring 2008 testing. He also boasts a career-best squat of 635 pounds, the second-best figure by a Maryland tight end, topped only by the 685-pound lift from Vernon Davis (49ers). In each of his last four offseasons, the tight end received Iron Terp honors, a recognition for his outstanding performances in the training room

Maybe not so much a mistake, as hes now made two NFL teams - a real bust does not do that
Now so much a question as him being bad as Perrish Cox and Squid being better, but when drafted last year, we had no way of knowing that.
Plus a trade for a hyper strong , good blocking great pass catching TE seems good value.
What if Thomas busts? What then?

Positives: Looks the part. Good height, and even weight distribution. Good initial pop at the line of scrimmage as a blocker. Good hand placement. Good upper body strength to lock on and has the leg drive to knock defenders off the ball. Good lateral agility and balance to stay square with the defender. Good effort at the second level to block downfield. Uses his hands well to get off the line of scrimmage and into his routes. Presents a big target to the quarterback and knows where the holes in the zone are located. Secure receiver who can take a pop and hang on.
Negatives: Lacks the preferred athleticism for the position. Only a short yardage target in the passing game. Slow off the line of scrimmage. Lumbers downfield and struggles to sink his hips and generate any explosion out of his breaks. Lacks the frame to add much more weight.

That doesn’t mean we recovered it. We could have had three 1st rounders this year. We did spend the #14 overall pick this year in order to draft Phonz. We just traded him for a 3rd (ish) string TE.
There are far too many late-round success stories and examples of 1st rounders finally making major strides in their 2nd and third years. This move reeks of desperation, IMO.
It's just about time for us to get out there and win a MF Game!
I just imagine what McG is going to say....

"I told you so"?
Truth is, there’s still a lot of questions to be answered. If he turns out to be a starter in detroit, then what?
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
If someone owned an ICEE truck and wanted to kidnap me, I'd let them.
then we remember how much he struggled here and we couldn't have possibly known he would have turned out that way

Exactly.
It will be a catch 22 until the end of time.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
If someone owned an ICEE truck and wanted to kidnap me, I'd let them.
My guess is McG will handle it fairly low-key
He fights strongly for his opinions, but doesn’t spend a lot of time gloating. I would expect references back to this situation from him only if there is anything in te future that even has a whiff of the same scent, or if he is having strong opposition to a point and refers back to it as an example of being right when the majority was against him in the past…both of those situations are fair game in my book.

comes from how bad Shanahan drafted. That is why we have struggled. I hate seeing draft picks fail.

Remember 50% of more of all draft picks
inclding 1st and 2nd rounders never end up playing much football. Drafts are crapshoots at best. I’d say that Perish Cox and Syd’quan Thompson have already made up for the A. Smith debacle.
by John in Castle Rock on Sep 4, 2010 2:07 PM MDT reply actions
Hope you are right
But Smith looked good initially last year, too. Let’s let them play a full regular season before we get too excited about Cox and Thompson.
Keep Moving Forward.
But we had no idea they would be on the team when we selected Alphnso Smith
So the end result matters, if they did not come along it looks like Smith would at least be serviceable based on his performance
If we go 16-0 no one will say anything, If we go 0-16 then all hell will break loose. Hindsight will always be 20-20 and arm chair QB’s are always right.

I give Vaughn credit but didn't think he'd be in the 53
He was almost always the first one downfield on STs. It may seem trivial but it does mean something.
"the megalomaniac view of oneself as the Elect, wholly good, abominably persecuted, yet assured of ultimate triumph; the attribution of gigantic and demonic powers to the adversary; the refusal to accept the ineluctable limitations and imperfections of human existence, such as transience, dissention, conflict, fallibility whether intellectual or moral; the obsession with inerrable prophecies…systematized misinterpretations, always gross and often grotesque." – Norman Cohn - quoted in The Paranoid Style in American Politics
Yup. Suggested this last night when the Phonz trade rumors broke
It makes perfect sense, and tells me that McBath’s injury is not insignificant. Nate Jones can play both safety and nickel corner; Cox can play nickel and CB; Thompson and Vaughn are backup CBs and can both play a big role for special teams. My guess is Vaughn / Cox are your kick returners, and Thompson / Royal are your punt returners.
Maximizing roster efficiency.
Because Cox moved ahead of Phonz at the nickel, Smith became the odd man out. He’ll likely excel at Detroit because he’s a good player, and he’ll be playing in the backfield for a team with a good D-line.
Hate to see him go, but this is all about juggling the roster to get the most out of each position.

Just reported that the Broncos might be interested in Leinart and TJ Whosyourmomma. Doe he even follow football???
Houshmandzadeh: The Broncos could use another receiver. I don’t think Houshmandzadeh if a perfect fit, but if neither the Broncos nor Houshmandzadeh find a better match, a pairing could be discussed.
Leinart: Unless Denver got rid of Brady Quinn in favor of Leinart, I don’t see this as much of a match.
And the Broncos MIGHT be interested in signing me as the new slot receiver....

Thompson was projected as a late first early second
before he ran his 40. Cox was projected to be picked up by the vikings in the 1st round on many mock drafts…if anything this should tell us how deep last years draft was.
It's hard not to think that Phonz needs more time to develop
But McX is walking a fine line here. Another season where Phonz doesn’t play well and then there isn’t enough value there for a trade like this. At least we got something in return for our mistake. Excellent points about the draft being a crapshoot too.

How about Samkon Gado (sp) for a short yardage RB? TN released him and kept Legarrette Blount earlier today and what about LJ Smth as a receiving TE? I think he is a FA.
LJ skills have eroded like Crumpler.

Well if he can’t give us the mojo couple possession catches a game in clutch time with his bad hammy, he can help coach the other players to do it. Kinda like paying for an extra WR coach and he’s there next year if we need him in some way.
Nice.
How smart was it for McDaniels to play A Smith last night as an audition?
If we get a good strong pass blocking pass catching TE out of the trade and a draft choice, thats better than getting nothing if we cut him.
Plus McD gets props from me for going with the best player and not trying to justify his past choices. Thats smart decision making.

Don't know why it didn't occur to me that the Lions would be a good trade partner for TE
They are, as noted above, deep at that position, and the Broncos are not, and the Broncos were deep in DBs, and the Lions were not.
Thus, bingo!
I wish Smith the best. If they hadn’t drafted so well this year they might have kept him around longer but they were real deep there now and this was a good fit. So there we go.

This the LIONS we’re talking about here, folks. I guess in the grand scheme of things every single fan of every single team usually thinks they got the best end and the other team got hoodwinked. I couldn’t help but chuckle as some of them were posting about 9 and possibly 10 win seasons. But then, I also feel the same about our team. At least they know who McD is. i couldn’t even give you an educated guess as to who the coach of the Lions is.
Take my advice, I'm not using it !!!

Hope you set them straight!
that they’re getting a talented player who at his own admission did not get his act together at all. He has a long way to go. If he works out for them, great. But that trade is a lot more even than they think. Or maybe Jazzy can bring word back from us. ;-)

if the Draft pick in the Alphonso trade
is a conditional pick based on things like playing time. It could work out well for the Broncos because he should see a fair bit of a time in a weak secondary.

I am raging with the fire of 1000 suns
I understand trading the #14 pick to move up and select Smith was a bad move, but as bad as McD’s draft was last year I think he should get credit for what appears to be a great draft this year.
We drafted Tebow, DT, and got Cox & Decker who are 1st-2nd round talents. Cox and Squid look to be steals, and Im impressed that McD sticks by his guns and keeps the best players, draft position or financial obligations be damned.
I agree...
I also think he should get credit for saving J. Moss’s career. That was a bone head move by Shanahan and McDaniels turned him around.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

The problem is
MCD is starting to look like he is swinging for the fences every at bat.
He’s either hitting homers or striking out badly. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out going forward.

Woah! Getting back together with Shanny?
@Adam_Schefter: Seattle OL coach Alex Gibbs abruptly resigned, week before opener. More at ESPN.com.
We all live in a Broncos centric universe but Williamson should know better
and other journalists following the Broncos as well. The fact is, if you look at cuts and trades this week, up through today, there are so many former high draft picks — 2nd rounders alone, that are being cut or traded. Why does McDaniels always get fixated on? What’s happening is pretty routine, and you want your coach to be true to his word, that he’ll accept mistakes AND that he’ll put the best players on his roster regardless of salary,, veteran status, or history together.
meanwhile, the Jaguars are about to trade their former 1st round draft choice S Reggie Nelson. You look at matt Leinart ( up for debate but clearly not a fit in Arizona), the Matt Jones experiment, James Hardy, Chad Jackson, the number players out of work or changing scenery who were former high draft picks is quite extensive.
I look at how a staff does overall, from pick 1 to the last pick, of each draft, and each FA signing. Not all of them will work out. Never.
It’s a fair point to say that trade and pick were a failed idea, or didn’t work out, a mistake, but to harp on McDaniels, especially from writers like Williamson [as noted above he also doesn’t seem aware of the Broncos’ WR depth this year] who are paid to pay attention to rosters but seem ill equipped to do so, is just disappointing, to put it mildly.

McD has got some stones
cutting his losses earlier than most others would. I’ll give him credit for being able to admit mistakes and keeping the best 53 on the roster. I don’t know that I’ve ever mand a comment about Phonz other than on draft day where I critisized the move to get him. It wasn’t him I was against but the move itself. I know a lot of us were in that boat. It was obviously a bad move in hindsight and hopefully a lesson to McD. Although he did say that he wasn’t prepared fully for that draft. Let’s all hope that his years crop turns out far better.
At this point, this is our team. So let’s all quit the bickering and the debating about the past and look forward to the season. Let’s get behind the 53 dudes we do have. Lets go get us some Jaguars.
Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?

He understands the idea of a sunk cost in decision making
Coach McD is not one to let some emotional investment or defensiveness about previous decisions affect who he thinks are the best players available.

Just gotta love a football player named Gronkowski
CB Alphonso Smith traded to Detroit Lions for TE Dan Gronkowski
the Gronk has a football player name straight from central casting.

Dude looks the part and comes from a football family gene pool.
The Gronkowski family is full of athletes. Dan is one of five brothers, including the Arizona Wildcats’ Chris and Rob (a junior who earned consensus All-Pac-10 accolades in 2008). Their father, Gordie Sr., played on the offensive line at Syracuse. Dan’s older brother, Chris, played three years in the California Angels organization
.
Gronkowksi’s size, blocking skills and ability to move the chains could make him a solid reserve tight end in the NFL. Had an arm span of 34 1/2 inches and a hand span of 10 1/2 inches at the combine.
Interesting that his draft prospect rating back then had blocking as a strength, while everyone is saying he’s a pass catching TE.
Strengths: Looks the part.
Weaknesses: Lacks the preferred athleticism for the position. Only a short yardage target in the passing game. Slow off the line of scrimmage. Lumbers downfield and struggles to sink his hips and generate any explosion out of his breaks. Lacks the frame to add much more weight.
