Denver Broncos Claim RB Andre Brown from Giants
The Denver Broncos have claimed running back Andre Brown off of waivers from the New York Giants, per Adam Caplan and Mike Garafolo via Twitter.
Brown was a fourth round pick of the Giants in 2009 out of North Carolina State. A torn Achilles kept him out of his rookie season.
For his college career, Brown rushed for 2,539 yards and 22 touchdowns on 523 carries.
The Broncos are likely hoping the 6'0" 224 pound Brown can replace the recently injured LenDale White as a power back on the roster. White ironically also had his season ended by a ruptured Achilles.

Question;
I had read in a post about White’s injuries (forget who said it) that RBs just DO NOT come back from ruptured achilles injuries. Apparently that is not true because here is Andre Brown.
I hope your the short yardage answer Mr. Brown! We really need you to be!

Oh! Duh! My question was...
Is a ruptured achilles injury a carer ender? Hopefully Ponderosa or Doc can expand.

My understanding of achilles injuries
The repair can be very strong, but needs to be done quickly to prevent a significant loss of range of motion.
The tendon is basically shorter after repair than it was before, so the work to recover that flexibility can be a painful one, but not impossible.
So I see you rolled your way into the semis?

On a ruptured achilles
there is excellent chance of recovery. Will have plenty of time to heal and be ready for next season . . .
Hey EastCoastBronco!
By no means is it a career ending injury when repaired promptly by expert surgeons. The rehab is difficult like all tendon ruptures because there can be no load bearing on the tendon for weeks while the repair heals. This leads to loss of muscle integrity in the muscle groups moved by the tendon, in this case the calf muscles used to extend and push off of the foot. It’s obviously a pretty important muscle group for a professional football player. However, with current training techniques and accelerated wound repair, a diligent player can restore the muscle strength and tendon flexibility that they had before. It takes 6-9 months and of course all this is tempered by the fact that individual cases vary. In some cases it probably can be career ending, but generally that’s not the case at all. Hope this helps. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do with good coaching.

My guess too

Saw him play at NC State
If he’s healthy he’s a substantial upgrade over Hall. Very good vision , runs downhill and very tough. First tackler rarely brings him down. Of course that was college and ACC at that.
"as in football so in life"
I had a "torn" achilles and have no range of motion problem.
my understanding is that a "torn’ is worse than a “rupture” My bigger problem was atrophy of the calf muscle which would not be a problem with a good treatment regimine of an athlete. Correct me if am wrong.
Exactly. See my response to EastCoastBronco above.

I didn't know that
When I imagine a rupture, I think of the achilles exploding. And if that were the case, I’d rather tear my achilles than have it explode haha
The fact that Hall is listed above Ball on the depth chart on DB.com
does that say anything about it? Could it be Ball that gets released? (I’d says Ball was much better in preseason than Hall, but just wondering)

DB.com is probably just wrong.
I don’t think McD communicates directly with those who manage the site.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
I told that web designer three times that Ball was ahead of Hall and he still got it wrong!

a look back
Scott Wright had him as his #5 RB in 09, ahead of Shonn Greene and Rashad Jennings and behind Wells, Moreno, Donald Brown and LeSean McCoy. He’s a good receiver besides being a big RB. Prior to his injury, we would have been thrilled to get this guy. So the question is how well he’s healed.
Here’s a link:
One year later, he’s back healthy, feeling faster than ever.
In Brown’s mind, the surgically repaired Achilles isn’t even an issue anymore.

This clip of Brown is AWESOME
he may have turf toe right now
but this is a nice clip of him from a few weeks ago scoring a TD vs. Pittsburgh

Turf toe is the kind of injury statement that teams use to get people to the practice squad.
Not to say, he did not have a legitimate injury, but overstating an injury to try and get people through waivers has to be something a team will try.
This article seems to make turf toe a manageable injury type in the NFL that can be worked around.
By the way, how is Moreno's injury coming along? I haven't heard much of him lately, will he be ready for the Jags?
I would think he'll be ready
He said he felt about 80% on Thursday, and was a game time decision to play against the Vikings. He didn’t play, but I would assume with over a week more time to heal he’ll be playing some against the Jags.
the feeling
is that the Broncos are keeping him under wraps in the hope that he will be able to go against the Jags. He will probably be practicing all week, if he doesn’t have a setback.
I hope it works out. My big worry was the same one I had last year, which is that he may be out of sync early, and only a limited help. I am one of the Knowshon draft nuts who thinks he has enough talent to overcome issues like that, and enough grit to get on the field if the team needs him, but I have seen better players fizzle, so one can’t be too cautious…

I've said this before...
The offensive will be a little out of sync the first game. McDaniels only has 10 days to get the chosen starting offensive line used to working together. Clady will be rusty & not 100 percent and, of course, Moreno will need to get back in sync with the offense.
Don’t be surprised by the mistakes in the first game. Also don’t be surprised at how much better they’ll look the second game.

Good pick up
funny that I kept wanting them to pick up his ex teammate Gartrell Johnson, who I really like. But I forgot they also cut brown, who is very good.

Turf Toe
There’s a very real chance that the Turf Toe will keep him from being very productive this year. They expected him to miss one game, I’m betting it’s more.
Having said that…I like the pickup. Looks like the Giants wanted to keep him and hoped his injury history would prevent him being claimed off waivers.

about turf toe
What is the prognosis?
Dr. King: The prognosis is generally pretty good as far as the ability to return to action, but it’s relatively poor in the sense that you never really cure the condition. Essentially this becomes an arthritic condition. The longer you are in the league, the greater the chances are that you will get turf toe, which can lead to arthritis, which means you’re more susceptible to repeat injury and so on. Most lineman that retire after 10 years or so will have very stiff big toes.
You can calm the symptoms down and you can play relatively symptom-free with proper protection, but the condition is hard to cure and much easier to accommodate. But the ability to accommodate it is pretty good. We can get almost every one of these guys playing — comfortably and at close to 100 percent — even though they have an arthritic toe.
wow im really excited for this guy

Andre Brown added = Bruce Hall released

past posts
I did a search on my past postings and found I had mentioned Andre Brown 7 times, which gives you an idea of how highly I thought of him at that point. And I hadn’t produced many mocks so it wasn’t because I had mentioned everyone, as some posters here do.
What some may have missed about him is the fact that he’s a good receiver. He’s not just a big back. Some of the RBs being mentioned are poor fits for the 1-back, and the fact that they’re being mentioned despite their shortcomings in receiving, blocking, etc., says something about the poster’s understanding of this issue.
I, too, took a while took a while to adjust my thinking, but I would have hoped that more people would have figured it out by now. It’s no longer about a one-cut back who can run and do little else. Being a one-dimensional power back is not going to win you a roster spot on this team. Brown is much more than that. BTW — he was also a good KR, if you can believe that for someone of his size.
As I said previously — we would have thrilled to get this guy before his injury.

FWIW.....
Cecil Lammey here on 87.7 The Ticket in Denver said Andre Brown was a great pickup for Denver. He also said he could potentially be as good as Ryan Grant, something to that extent IIRC. So we shall see. At any rate, I’m guessing he’s an upgrade over Bruce Hall.
by Gristle McThornbody on Sep 6, 2010 1:25 PM MDT reply actions
yes, but I think Hall has been given too little credit
Yes on Brown.
Hall was attacked without good reason, though. He may not be a premier back but he did some good things (look at his performance against Minnesota in running and catching). People have gone overboard on attacking RBs who lacked a hole to run through. It really, really helps when the OL opens a hole.
