Broncos Announce Several Transactions

The Denver Broncos on Sunday announced several transactions, including the club being assigned running back Andre Brown (N.Y. Giants) and offensive lineman Chris Clark (Minnesota) off waivers.

Denver also on Sunday waived linebacker Baraka Atkins and running back Bruce Hall while adding five players to its practice squad (see below).

Brown (6-foot-0, 224 pounds) is a second-year running back who was selected by the Giants in the fourth round (129th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft from North Carolina State University. He spent his rookie year on the Giants’ reserve/injured list before leading the club in rushing yards (21-95, 4.5 avg., 1 TD) and kickoff return yards (7-120, 17.1 avg.) in his first action as a pro during the 2010 preseason.

At N.C. State, Brown played 44 games (30 starts) and finished his career ranked ninth in school history in all-purpose yards with 3,511, including 2,539 rushing yards (523 att., 4.9 avg., 22 TDs). Named North Carolina’s Associated Press Player of the Year at Greenville Rose High School in Greenville, N.C., Brown was born on Dec. 15, 1986.

Clark (6-foot-5, 315 pounds) is a first-year offensive lineman who spent the last two seasons on the Vikings’ practice squad after entering the NFL with Tampa Bay in 2008 as a college free agent from the University of Southern Mississippi.

A first-team All-Conference USA pick as a senior at Southern Mississippi, Clark started 39 consecutive games to end his collegiate career. He was an all-district selection at McDonogh High School in New Orleans and was born on Oct. 1, 1985.

Good question, I have no clue

In theory, I can’t imagine there would be any restriction to gaining a player off the waiver wire who could qualify for the practice squad, though I’d wonder if that would be an effective use of the waiver wire: since players are assigned to teams in reverse order from their finish the previous year, and if I read John’s post on the waiver wire correctly, once a player’s been assigned to your team, you drop to the bottom of the list.

That means we could end up with a practice squad player off the waiver wire and end up missing out on a player who could immediately fill a need.

They have to clear wavers before PS

If you claim them off wavers, you have to sign them to your roster. If no one picks them up, then you can negotiate and sign them to your PS.

Yes.

I think once you clear wavers, you are free to sign with anyone you wish. As long as the team is interested. Most seem to go to their original teams, if that team wants them. Sometimes teams do pick up other teams’ wavers and sign them to the PS.

Baraka Atkins

That is a surprise. I can’t believe they think they are that deep at LB. I would have though Batiste would have been let go. Maybe this means they are holding a spot for Darrell Reid after all. Who knows?

Atkins looked decent rushing the passer in the preseason, other than that, I didn’t notice him much. I definitely agree on Batiste. I like Daniels more in run blocking but Batiste can play T.

Who the hell are we going to get for OLB?

I’m personally not comfortable with 3 guys plus Haggan, but the team might be?

Kevin Alexander could be signed at any time similar to Tony Carter last year. He was decent in pre season

I think this is a temporary situation. Once Harris is ready to go, this guy will be gone unless he really shows something which I doubt. I fully expect Atkins to be resigned.

Yeah

Everyone outside of Denver pretty much thinks he is a fool. I don’t agree, but they look at trading Cutler, Marshall, drafting Alphonso Smith, trading Alphonso Smith for a guy taken in the 7th round, drafting Tim Tebow in the 1st round, as big mistakes.

Chris Clark

I’ve been scouring the web looking for information on his pro career.

Clark is a big 315 pound tackle who was spent the last couple of years on the Viking’s practice squad. He’s played some in the preseason this year and the results weren’t good. He had four penalties in the first game and in the 3rd game he had a penalty and a sack.

So what were the Broncos thinking? Two thoughts come to mind…

First, the Vikings play a zone blocking scheme and perhaps Clark may work much better in a man blocking scheme??

Second, Broncos will try him at Guard instead of Tackle. The Broncos will take flyers on players they think have been used in the wrong position. Perhaps they feel Clark is better suited at guard.

This choice seems like a long shot, at best. I’m not seeing anything that screams potential. But he’s got size…you can’t teach that.

He is emergency depth until all of out OT are at full strength. Hopefully we practices only and is never active. Then we dump him and pick up depth at either DT or DE/OLB (we may even pick Atkins back up — many teams have been waiving and resigning players over the past few days).

You have to play roster games sometimes to get to 53 and cover positions with injuries.

Size is the thing

Big difference in trying to have big guys move in a zone blocking scheme. Maybe they think he is a better fit with our new OL scheme.

Did he get any reps playing against us?

No sight of Jamie Kirlew

We cut Baraka Atkins and we are now desperately short at OLB. And Kirlew, our draft choice, was not signed even to PS. I’ve not seen him picked up by any team, so I guess he is just not good enough.

Our depth at DL is dangerously low, especially considering these are positions that require rotation during a game, and now the same goes for OLB. I understand that we just do not have enough talented players to put on the roster – this means we we will have to make do for 2010. And extended D-line (DT, DE, OLB) must be a priority in 2011 draft.

Depth on DL

It seems low b/c we only have six guys, but remember it’s only a three man rotation, sometimes only two. We have four guys who can play nose, and five who can play DE in this scheme.

but that IS the language of the waiver system. When a player hits the waiver wire, teams put in requests for them and the NFL assigns the player to a team.

I was wondering if there is any way to find out

who else we tried to pick up off waivers. For example, I noted we put a claim in on Lumpkin from the Packers, but missed out there. It seems that we could get some insight into the coach’s thinking by seeing ALL of the claims we put out there, not just the picks that filtered down to us.
