So the surprises -- Beadles not starting, Daniels will be, kind of strange but Daniels did look good run blocking when he was in there.

Quinn still being the #2 QB.   R Quinn getting moved to the #3 TE spot behind Gronkowski.  I didn't see the TE switch happening, only because I thought R Quinn had performed to be expected in the Vikings game.  Perhaps with his injury they want to give him a little more time?  I also thought that B Quinn would be #3 behind Tebow.  Jason Hunter also takes over the #1 spot from Moss.  This actually provides me with some relief.

I didn’t see Beadles play poorly in preseason. It’s disappointing to see his name so low on the depth chart.

Jason Hunter at #1 OLB? That is a massive drop off from Elvis, but I guess so in Jarvis Moss…. Oh well. Maybe he’ll play the run well. We’ll need to spend a pretty high draft pick at this spot in 2011.

Denver: 32-32 until we're not.

by McGeorge on Sep 6, 2010 10:23 PM MDT reply actions

I think it’s more of a concern over the health of Harris’ ankle than a statement on Beadles. That is, they’re more comfortable with Beadles at RT w/ Daniels at LG than Beadles at LG and anyone else at RT.

And depth chart aside, I think if Harris can go but Clady can’t (or can’t go a full game), I hope we see Beadles at LT rather than Batiste or Clark.

Denver: 32-32 until we're not.

by McGeorge on Sep 7, 2010 7:35 AM MDT up reply actions

Agreed............

Beadles not starting is,to me, more an indication of Harris’s health than Beadles production at guard. Also, I think Gronk is more of a receiver than Quinn at TE, which is why he is listed at #2 IMO.

CHARACTER, INTELLIGENCE, and HARD WORK often beats TALENT but what happens when you load up on all 4???????????

by Broncofan on Sep 7, 2010 8:04 AM MDT up reply actions

Exactly.

I think it’s less a reflection of Quinn than it is of slight differences in how we’re planning to use them. We’ll have to see how healthy Quinn is.

by JeffG on Sep 7, 2010 8:44 AM MDT up reply actions

I assume Beadles is listed as 2nd string RT because

Harris probably won’t play against the Jags, so Beadles will start at RT. If Harris is back healthy then I bet he gets moved back to starting LG.

In general I think we will see a lot of guys rotating in on the D line and at Linebacker, so I expect to see Moss on the field some, same with Mayes and Woodyard.

by shaneslone on Sep 6, 2010 11:46 PM MDT up reply actions

good, yes

I have yet to see an injury report on Harris, but I assumed it was bad enough to keep him out for this game.

I watched the replay on NFL Network...

…Mind you it was all blathering about the Vikings with their local announcers, although Mike Mayock added some value I suppose. Either way, on the play where Ryan’s ankle got rolled up you could actually hear him scream out. It was pretty gruesome to hear. What’s more concerning is that he played the next play and you could see on the replay that he was hurt very badly. I don’t know why these players want to tough it out! Knowshon did this exact same thing in preseason last year. Those extra plays after getting dinged can do more damage than they can imagine! Let’s hope he gets well.

by Lucky Mercenary on Sep 7, 2010 2:37 PM MDT up reply actions

It depends on how this year plays out.

With Doom returning next year and Ayers having a potentially great year, we might be set for starters at OLB next near, and if some of these young guys really turn it on our depth might look fine too.

The positions that I DONT see getting better for us over the course of the year that will likely need to be addressed in 2011 are DL and RB. The vets on DL are going to get worn down holding up the fort this year and Williams may not have a good year in 2011 because of that.

Our high draft picks will go to the best players available at the positions of need, i’d expect RB and DL to top that list.

by Alexander Wall on Sep 7, 2010 12:02 AM MDT up reply actions

I agree that RB should be a high priority in the 2011 draft. One of our 3 early picks.

Denver: 32-32 until we're not.

by McGeorge on Sep 7, 2010 7:37 AM MDT up reply actions

Yep. NT, TE and LB all in the first two rounds. I agree with what’s been said about Zane. I think he’s starting RT if Harris isn’t in, starting LG if Harris is playing.

Hunter is a big surprise. But then again, after moving Haggan back inside the only real alternative was Moss. Jarvis sounded to have made huge strides early on in TC. That was the word, but I never really saw it.

Loosing Doom sucks. We’re def going to need to spend a couple high picks on front-seven next year. My guess is that it’s a NT and a dominant ILB.

It's just about time for us to get out there and win a MF Game!

by Alex on Sep 7, 2010 2:51 AM MDT up reply actions

Exactly

NT!!!!!!!!, 5 Tech – even though Bannan can hold the fort until he’s ready, ILB (that guy from N.C. sounds great to me), TE – a true balanced tight end (I’m so jealous of Gronkowski from New England, that guy is the next Witten), and a speed and/or power back. We might not need the power back if LenDale bounces back and I hope he does.

by PaleHorse78 on Sep 7, 2010 2:59 AM MDT up reply actions

We’ll def need to address the back situation, but as long as KnowMo proves to be good this year, I don’t see us spending a high-resource to obtain another backup. This off-season proved that aged vets as backups are a dime a dozen. But yeah, we’ll need one.

I actually like Gresham more than Gronkowski, but I think I’ve seen him play a lot more so maybe that’s shading my opinion. Either way, NE drafts an early TE almost every year. McDaniels did that in his first year here, so I’d imagine we do it again next year – and it’s needed.

It's just about time for us to get out there and win a MF Game!

Brown may turn out to be quite a steal

It could be that Moreno gets well and Brown steps up. Which means we can concentrate on depth on both lines.

by JeffG on Sep 7, 2010 8:48 AM MDT up reply actions

I don't think we need a high pick there

Doom and ayers seem like locks and if hunter plays well and moss steps up I don’t see the need for a high pick there over d line or ilb

A big factor:

Something I think needs to be said about our WR this year is that the WRs we play each Sunday may vary from week to week. Certain teams may give us more shots downfield so activating Willis and leaving a guy like Decker on the sideline more or letting Royal handle punts is not that far fetched.

I think the gameplan going into each week may have a lot to do with who is returning punts/kicks and who we play at WR in each position be it slot or what-have-you. Because our guys are all equally versatile and all fairly talented I think we can always keep our opponents guessing. It’s a good situation to be in.

by Alexander Wall on Sep 7, 2010 12:06 AM MDT up reply actions

Word is that Cox

is still dropping the occasional kick in practice, which Royal does not, and McD is not willing to risk putting someone back there who’s going to potentially fumble a return. I can’t blame him for that. A fumbled kick return is one of the most devastating plays that can happen. If it means running Royal out there for a while longer until Cox or Willis demonstrates the required consistency, I’m willing to live with that, even if it means a slightly less effective Royal. We’ve got a deep and talented WR core, we don’t need Royal to catch the ball every play.

Is it just me or did anyone else think that Squid looked like our best kick returner?

He just seemed to have the most burst and seemed very elusive. I’m honestly surprised to see Royal returning both kickoffs and punts. I would rather let Cox and Squid show what they can do. Let Eddie have fresh legs to start each drive.

then why not use him there.
I like Decker better in the slot from what I’ve seen.
And Gaffney, Lloyd, Willis and Thomas to stretch the field.
Royal’s perfect spot on the team may be as returner and #2 slot.

Beadles listed as backup RT, not LG, because he will be playing in place of an injured Ryan Harris at RT on Sunday? Just a thought. I’ve got to think he would at least be ahead of Olsen at LG if they were strictly listing the players in the order they would play at each position.

Agreed

Dumervil WILL be back and by this time next year Ayers, Moss and Hunter will be vastly improved (you have to realize that two 1st rounders are tied to this positon – let them develop). I believe our draft focus next year should be on the DL and ILB positions. This next draft class seems like it has more 3-4 pieces than any in recent memory. We have neglected the D-Line and Mike Backers long enough. I also think it’s insane that Quinn is our #2 QB and Eddie is still the main returner. Hopefully McDaniels knows something we don’t.

But I think McD is ordering it according to how most coaches do, in order who you want to start. I’m completely for Tebow in the future, and I don’t think Quinn has a long future here, but at this point, Quinn seems like the best choice, and McD seems to feel the same.

this has nothing to do with the depth chart though

The depth chart below may not be the same as game day designations. It is not like the Broncos must follow the above depth chart in a game. The chart, in reality, means nothing except to elicit conversation amongst people like us.

by Horse Head Bookends on Sep 7, 2010 8:32 AM MDT up reply actions

Exactly

McD has until 90 minutes before game time to make designations.

by JeffG on Sep 7, 2010 8:52 AM MDT up reply actions

As long as Tebow is bobbling snaps, I don't think he'll be #2

All offseason I heard that McDaniels was going to use Tebow as a change-of-pace QB who can run in short yardage. If there’s any question about him holding on to the ball when coming in cold, Tebow won’t sniff the field.

by Velveeta on Sep 7, 2010 10:12 AM MDT up reply actions

Another Thought on Royal

With the emergence of Decker, the slot duties are going to be split in half which in return gives Royal more time being the monster returner he is. I also think McDaniels is worried about the rooks coughing up the ball.

by PaleHorse78 on Sep 6, 2010 10:42 PM MDT reply actions

perfect

this is exactly it. As excited as we are about Cox and Squid taking over return duties, lets not forget that Eddie is probably our BEST all around returner. It isn’t a toss away job and you can bet your booty that Eddie WANTS to return kicks, and won’t give up the job without a fight!

Thanks Jeremy

Another reason we shouldn’t worry about Eddie returning this year is that he won’t need to be the sole returner. With the emergence of Cox & Thompson we might see a different return man on every return – a rotation if you will. Someone earlier proposed that Eddie might be trade bait (with Decker looking so promising). I don’t see that. McDaniels is a passing game guru and loves collecting receivers as Shanny did RB’s. There is plenty of love to pass around to receivers and returners in this System. No Way is Eddie Royal traded.

by PaleHorse78 on Sep 7, 2010 12:35 AM MDT up reply actions

nice

In an ideal world, Beadles should be our sixth-man utility lineman anyway. He’s very good, if we have five players better than him, we’re in excellent shape, and we could in the future get away with only having seven or eight linemen on the roster.

I don’t mind at all that Quinn is #2. For quarterback at least, I have blind trust that McD’s judgment is better than ours. I’ve seen so much reinforced conventional wisdom that Tebow will get special packages every game this season that I’ll get some perverse satisfaction out of seeing him inactive. Yes, I did just use “special packages” and “perverse” in the same sentence. All that said, I’m still a big fan of Tebow.

I feel rather freaked out about our lack of experience, but have optimism about Mays and Hunter for 3-4 games down the line. What’s nice is I don’t see any clear dogs on the roster right now. If things gel, we have some nice upside here.

I really think Royal is going to end up being tradebait.

Another thought about Quinn

Not that McD cares about the media storm, but putting Tebow #3 precludes him from having to address a million Tebow/Quinn/Orton QB controversy questions. Tebow will see the field just like you said, in special packages. But just like when Orton got popped the other week, Quinn is the guy to go in immediately and hand off the ball to the RB.

by ShaDy23 on Sep 6, 2010 10:43 PM MDT reply actions

My thoughts exactly

even though I think Lloyd is a grown man now. People need to realize that he started his repoire with Orton back in Chicago – it’s only gotten better. Jabar Gaffney would be a solid #2 and Royal and Decker can round it out in the slot. Lloyd and Willis will get theirs even if they never start. This offense is designed to spread the wealth often.

by PaleHorse78 on Sep 7, 2010 3:04 AM MDT up reply actions

Let's let him PLAY first

He needs to be on the field before he’s named starter. He’ll get some looks — we go 5 wide and the dude’s a definite deep threat. He’ll get his day to win the job. ‘Starter’ doesn’t really mean a whole lot in this offense at the WR position, anyway.

Thanks for the low-down on our new TE. Good luck with Smith. He definitely has the potential to contribute to your team. Expect up and downs with him…he’s not a steady player yet at all. He will make INTs one minute and get burned the next. I hope he grows out of that quickly for you.

Madden 11 loves Zo.

He’s got four picks in the first two games for me! Woot

Thanks. Good post.

I’d give you the scouting report ont the Phonz, but you’d be too depressed after reading it. But Detroit won’t make out on this deal. You didn’t obtain a starting NFL corner. He’s a backup, even on his best days.

Denver: 32-32 until we're not.

This might be the perfect example of a win-win trade

We had too many CB’s and you guys had too many TE’s. Both appear to be good fits for their neew teams. Good luck with Phonz and thanks for your input on Gronk!

Thoughts on Jason Hunter...

I thought he looked alot like Mario Haggan Playing outside against the run holding up tightends and tackles Setting the edge. I doubt he can be an effective pass rusher but we can bring in Jarvis moss on 3rd Down.

With 5 sacks last year

I believe Hunter had more than the entire rest of the current Broncos combined. Transition to OLB might be rough, but he’s definitely got a lot of pass rush potential.

And we wish Phonz the best in Detroit. For some reason he just never performed well enough here. Maybe a new home will bring him around. Hopefully this is a deal with no losers.

Tebow

I guess this shows McD’s devotion to letting Tebow redshirt and learn to be a pocket passer. I can’t deny that I was excited at the prospect of Tebow running some “Wild Horse” and in on short yardage/red zone running plays. Guess not.

by PaleHorse78 on Sep 6, 2010 10:53 PM MDT reply actions

I was surprised we didn't see any of that in preseason...

The pieces are in place for sure and I feel that McD/Wink didn’t show a lot of their hand and will pull some surprises this year. Or, maybe not…I guess we’ll have to wait and see…shucks!

by bfree2bronc on Sep 7, 2010 12:08 AM MDT up reply actions

I also remember

McDaniels talking about possibly doing some things on the field this year that had never been done before at this level in a press conference. Hopefully they’re just playing it close to the vest. I am of the mind that Tebow should do what Tebow does and that’s an equal dose of death running and passing. Who knows maybe the triple option is coming to the big show. People are making way too much of a deal over Tebows bruised ribs on that TD scamper. If Tebow was the starter and it was the regular season, he would have played with that injury. Everyone underestimates the toughness and blazing fire in that kids soul. He is Mike Alstott and Steve Young morphed into one. Tebow should run the ball in 2010….

It didn’t stop them from using him.

Why?

I saw nothing out of LeKevin Smith in the pre-season to warrant a spot over Chris Baker. At least Baker had upside.

LeKevin Smith?!

the only black horse in the roster IMO. I have no idea how he’s stuck around for so long. I hope we find someone in free agency that we can replace him with. Maybe one of those vikings DL’s. who knows? but anyone is better.

That McD also saw him as a problem. Hopefully “Big Vick” is the answer.

I have noo idea why we released Darrell Reid!!

If his injury wasnt coming along then we should have put him on the PUP list! He was a beast in Special teams and he was our 3rd Down pass rusher from the inside!

But i thought his contribution as a 3rd down pass rusher was solid last year! Who will our 2 inside guys be on 3rd down?? All pre season i thought it would be Jarvis green and Reid but both got the ax

good point

gronkowski over quinn indicates as much…Quinn may be too dinged up to be reliably projected into the gameplan for Sunday. As to playbook familiarity…. They are probably planning on lots of runblocking for Gronk if Quinn can’t go.

The Beadles move

makes sense right now since both of our stud tackles are nicked up. Zane will probably end up back at LG if Stanley Daniels doesn’t pan out. I like Daniel’s though and I’m not sure if we can count him out. He looks like he could be a nice contributer in the ground game and he reminds me of Vladmir Ducasse. No matter who’s playing swing tackle or LG, it’s a much better option than Hamilton/Polumbus.
I also understand Hunter surpassing Moss. Hunter seems like a more viable option vs. the run and Moss’ talents will not be wasted in nickle situations.
Quinn over Tebow, Royal over Cox/Thompson/Vaughn on the other hand leaves me scratching my head a little. OK a whole lot with Quinn. Quinn showed one tiny glimpse in the pre-season while Tebow looked like he had the fire in him. I know he made some mistakes but overall was more effictive. His determination alone should make him our #2.

by PaleHorse78 on Sep 6, 2010 11:44 PM MDT reply actions

On Hunter

The fact that he was a DE in Detroit suggests he’s decent against the run. I worry more about how he drops back in coverage. He seems to have the athleticism for it, from what I’ve seen.

by JeffG on Sep 7, 2010 9:06 AM MDT up reply actions

If there's one thing I've learned about the McD coaching concept

it’s that Monday depth charts mean nothing. :) I fully believe that Cox or Thompson will be the starting KR/PR come game day, and Tebow will probably be the #2 QB.

Comparing Michael Lombardi to Bill Williamson is like comparing an In-N-Out Cheeseburger to a sh## sandwich.

Williamson would probably eat both – no questions asked.

by Joe Medina on Sep 7, 2010 12:14 AM MDT reply actions

The Depth Chart and Active Roster are Different

The depth chart and active roster are very different. While Tebow will be the 2nd ACTIVE QB on gamedays Brady Quinn is Coach McDaniels chosen 2nd string QB and backup to Kyle Orton. On gamedays all 3 QB’s will be dressed, but Orton and Tebow will be active, with Quinn listed as the emergancy QB. If Orton is injured before the 3rd quarter then Quinn would be able to replace him and Tebow and Orton are lost for the game. This is what Miami did with Pat White last season. Even though Henne was the backup QB, White was active on gamedays. In game 3, when pennington was injured Henne replaced him. This is also what the Eagles did with Kolb and Vick on gamedays.

by Mike Riley322 on Sep 7, 2010 2:11 AM MDT up reply actions

Thanks

for clearing that up for me. I have a feeling that Tebow is what Pat White was supposed to be for the Wildcat. The one guy that will truly revolutionize the formation as he is equally deadly to throw – and throw more often. Pat White is my boy and he put my Mountaineers back on the map, but has no endurance to take a major league hit. Tebow is gonna revolutionize football in some manner – we will all just have to wait and see. In the meantime, Orton is gonna do “Bradyish” things.

It's been mentioned before, and would be worth talking about here again...

If McD has to choose between two players of roughly equal skill, he will go with the vet over the rookie. This may be the case with Daniels vs. Beadles (amongst other reasons).

Tebow and the Wild Horses

I know I’m in the minority here, but I would be extremely surprised to see Tebow in on gamedays running the ball. From what little evidence we’ve seen in the preseason, it looks to me like the Broncos are trying to curb Tebow’s penchant for running, not encourage it. Sure, if the play breaks down and there is an opening, take it, which we saw him do in the Minnesota game. But they’ve also been clearly teaching him to dump the ball and live to play again. We saw that in the Minn. game too. Though he’s big, Tebow is not a running back, period. The shot to the ribs that he would’ve “played through” in the regular season was also a warning, this is the NFL, not the SEC. There is still a difference. McDaniels is not stupid enough, IMO, to purposely put Tebow in as a serious run option. I’ll be surprised if he is used in the special packages that everyone is imagining.

Step aside, my friend, I been doin' it for years.
Said sit on down, open ya eyes, say open up ya ears....

by pubkeeper on Sep 7, 2010 7:46 AM MDT reply actions

I don't see them trying to curb his running

Just trying to work on his weakness. I think that they want him to be a true dual threat who can really open up the game. To be that he needs to really add the pocket passing part.

by Fan in Exile on Sep 7, 2010 7:49 AM MDT up reply actions

I tend to agree with pubkeeper

I have heard everyone talking about 6 to 10 plays of special packages and wildhorses type plays every game for Tebow, but I just don’t see it. Sure he can run but I don’t think McD brought him here for that. I think he brought him here to learn the offense for a year and then challenge Orton next year. I think he brought him here for his brains and other “intangables”. Time will tell, and yes I know most people will disagree.

by ClaysDad on Sep 7, 2010 6:05 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree that they brought Tebow here for a long term solution at QB. I really don’t disagree with your points at all.

But what I meant by a few Wildhorse packages was just that, “a few”. Last year, during the NE game, they ran it with Knowshon what, 3-4 times before the Pats finally caught on? That’s what I’d like to see. Nothing too extensive to take away from Orton’s time out there (’cause I think he will do well).

But yes, I absolutely agree that they brought Tim here to be a passing QB and challenge next year. It’s just maybe if you can give a defense the occasional different look, it might benefit you.

by Gristle McThornbody on Sep 8, 2010 10:07 AM MDT up reply actions

The Great Shell Game.....

McDaniels is just like Shanahan in one respect – the only reason a depth chart is put in print is because the NFL requires it..

These conversations about who is where and why remind me exactly of the same conversations that took place the day after Shanny released the required Depth chart. Shanny and now Coach McD do not want to give the opposition any real idea about what to expect on Opening Day.

TIME TO BELIEVE. BRONCO Champions are being forged as we speak

by Broncobh on Sep 7, 2010 11:09 AM MDT reply actions

Agree

any coach worth his “salt” will play this game to some extent, but some make it an art form.

by idahobronc on Sep 7, 2010 12:23 PM MDT up reply actions

No doubt that Tebow will play

Picture this: First game in Jacksonville. Clady not playing. Harris not playing. The Broncos have been moving the ball through the air, and hitting on some runs, but without a big power back (Brown out with turf toe), they have failed on 3rd and short (see preseason absent White). The Broncos move down to the Jacksonville three yard line and it’s third down . . . are you telling me that they aren’t going to bring in T2 in this situation to roll-out and either hit the open receiver, pitch it, or, having gotten his 6’21/2" and 245 pounds at full speed, cut it into (and over if necessary) the defensive back coming up to make the tackle? I’m just saying . . .
