hmmm
Look like he has been mostly a career backup, only started 2 games in his career, totaling 28 tackles in his 5 years of NFL experience.
At 6-5 and 321
His primary job may have never been to make tackles. Have to see if he gets in a game or is just backup meat to get Williams a few more plays off now and then.

I'd guess The Kevin
Maybe they try to sneak Vaughn to the PS now after a lot of teams made their moves? They could cut an OL too— looks like Clarke is ahead to Batiste on the DC.
Won't bow. Don't know how.
I can't see us cutting an established DL for a guy who hasn't even practiced for us yet
Even if it’s someone we’re all down on (the Kevin).

established??....:)
This looks like one of those situations where the only date you are thinking about is so awful you would accept a blind date in a jiffy.
By that, I simply meant a known quantity
I guess I was wrong, since they did dump The Kevin, but I worry about bringing in a total newbie to the system when Smith at least knew the terminology. Talent-wise, I’m with everyone squawking to dump the guy.

Hmm
He’s a career 4-3 DL, the FO probably feel that he’s got more potential in the 3-4. I hope they’re right.
Have no idea who they’ll cut though, could be on the OL (although the situation there is precarious to say the least) or as above, maybe Vaughn.
He has the size, that's for sure...

Not Vaughn.
They told him he made the team. I’d be pretty pissed if they cut him after that.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
they told everyone they made the team
Anyone who gets cut at this point thinks he’s on the roster.
by BroncosBassist on Sep 7, 2010 9:04 AM MDT up reply actions
yeah, but i think players are aware that rosters are in flux the first few days after the final 53s are made

That’s what I was kind of getting at.
by BroncosBassist on Sep 7, 2010 10:36 AM MDT up reply actions
The problem with the 6 CBs they kept is that 3 of them are S/T returners — but how many are you going to have active in a single game? I might explore the trade market for Vaughn, if such a thing exists.
I can't imagine a move...
that involved a D-Lineman. They are so thin there to begin with. As stated above, this could be a sly move to get someone on the practice squad they didn’t think they could get through before. Now that most teams PS are full, it might be easier… Just a thought in the wind.

Vaughn
I don’t like the idea of exposing Vaughn. I guarantee someone would put him on their 53
Looking forward to the second year in McDaniels system!
Unless this cat can play tackle, this would make me nervous
No matter how bad Batiste is.
by BroncosBassist on Sep 7, 2010 9:05 AM MDT up reply actions
i'd guess Batiste or Clark.
Not gonna drop Smith for a guy who’s never played in the 3-4

Roster
Just looking at the roster, it has to be a O-lineman or a Db. Numbers-wise, we don’t have much depth anywhere else. The reason I say Db is ‘cause Jones can play both corner and safety, but I still don’t wanna go down that road.
Looking forward to the second year in McDaniels system!
I agree it could be Batiste or maybe Eric Olsen since Hochstein is listed as backup C
Josh McDaniels-All he wants to do is win a MF'in game!

By all means Olsen!
Officially on record with a 10-6 prediction for 2010! (8/21/10)

Wouldn't that be the shocker...
Not the PS for Quinn, but his outright release??

Quinn
If there is a word bigger than shocker, insert here
Looking forward to the second year in McDaniels system!
i dunno
what does quinn give us? orton’s the present, tebow’s the future. i could see a third qb if he gave us a chance to win now in case orton is injured, a garcia or the like — i don’t think that’s quinn. basically, if orton goes down we’re pretty much toast until he comes back, and in the interim reps given to quinn are reps taken away from tebow.
maybe he’ll have future trade value. but leinart didn’t.
i’d seriously consider letting him go and holding on to someone who could conceivably actually help us win a game; stokely, atkins, etc.
No way can we expose our college free agent Cassius Vaughn...too much great film on him.
My guess…it’s gotta be an Olineman or LeKevin or “THE” Kevin! I do like this move to further create size and strength up front.
- There was also a tidbit from Josina Anderson that suggested that while they kept Marcus Thoms, he HAD to pick up his game….this could be just the spark that keeps that fire in belly a little HOTTER!
How in the world could we justify releasing Brady Quinn when he has to have some trade value….right?

Didnt Leinart have some (albeit little) trade value either?

And regarding this new OL, Clark. The reviews have NOT be impressive from Viking's camp!

Interesting tidbit (from RotoWorld)
Vickerson, who was acquired by the Seahawks along with LenDale White in a draft-day trade, was a surprise cut by Seattle after a nice preseason. He’ll give the Broncos some solid depth.
The White connection I hadn’t realized, kind of funny how that worked out. He’s a good pickup at a position they were thin at (now they just need another OLB…)

Another piece on Vickerson in Seattle PI back when he was part of Seahawks
http://blog.seattlepi.com/football/archives/218031.asp
Big Vick, as the Seahawks call him, brings a certain presence with him on the football field. At 6-foot-5, 321 pounds, he’s a mountain of a man. And this is a large fellow with a mean streak when he’s between the lines.
He was in the middle of a training camp scuffle Tuesday with offensive guard Mike Gipson, something that surprised no one who has watched the Seahawks practices and seen the way Vickerson mixes things up in the trenches.
“They want me to be a big, nasty dude in the middle and that’s what I am,” Vickerson said Thursday. "You can’t be nice in there. You’ve got to be a dominating force. You’ve got to have that mindset of coming out dominating every play, every day.
"

batiste only 3rd string
Batiste is listed on the depth chart as 3rd string RT only. That sure sounds like its sending a sign to him that he is on the way out the door or near to it.
No way would they have cut Marcus Thomas
They seem high on him to be a big part of the DL rotation this year.

On the day of final cuts
…I said, in response to some of the more emotional of the commenters, that should the Broncos find a thumper at RB, a backup for the DL rotation, and a backup o-lineman, I’d say going into the season that we’d have a strong team from top to bottom.
Time will tell, but I’m hearing that the RB we swiped from the Giants may be a huge steal; and we’ve certainly added beef to both lines.
Even with all the injuries, this team can compete, I think. We could start slowly — the early part of the schedule is difficult, and the Broncos have plenty of question marks — but this team might be the first Broncos team in years to actually get better as the year goes on.
Here’s hoping!

Agreed!
This team will get better as the season goes on. If the recovering from injuries players – Moreno, Clady, Harris, Buckhalter can get back on the field at 100% BEFORE the eventual casulties of the season begin this Broncos team will only get better as the season progresses.
The McD plan Year One 2009- Starting line up 90% Excellent and long term players; Back ups 60-70% Long term players.
Year Two 2010 98% Excellent and long term players; Back ups 85-90%.
Year Three 2011 100% Excellent and Long term players; Back ups 95%.
The team is on course and on plan
TIME TO BELIEVE. BRONCO Champions are being forged as we speak
Absolutely - My guess is as astute as the next fans
But is will make for a good discussion about the McD’s plan.
TIME TO BELIEVE. BRONCO Champions are being forged as we speak
Right on, bro!......bring 'em on!
BTW- I happen to think your % guestimates are not too bad..not bad at all. And, I concur with your conceptualization of the Broncos strengthening annually at both the starters and the backups…..I just hope it shows in the standings and win/loss record THIS year instead of being delayed until next year. It’s been too long since we were a factor in the post-season.
Injuries - As always will shape the Final Outcome
Hopefully – the adversity of injuries and overcoming that challenge – has already been faced by the 2010 Broncos. Only time will tell.

How is accquiring a 4-3 defensive tackle going to help our cause?
The man hasn’t ever played in a 3-4? I’m guessing. And now all of a sudden he will impact our play on run stuffing and pass rushing? Someone with expertise please speak to me…
Not an "impact" pickup
but simply better depth than “The Kevin”
Plays with a little Nasty, which is always nice. Some are suggesting he was in the wrong position, that he might fit better in our 3-4. Time will tell.
But again, just better depth. And size.
So I see you rolled your way into the semis?
by OutOfYourElement on Sep 7, 2010 10:44 AM MDT up reply actions
it’s better depth and more size
Someone had mentioned not knowing the terminology… is there really much terminology to know for a 0/1 technique A-gap type of guy?
“see this area? don’t let anyone through”
Hell pre-snap DJ could just come up to him and say, clear him to the right. I just can’t imagine the thought process having to be super complex. It isn’t like OL where there will be different blocking assignments.
You might be surprised.
I agree that 3-4 DE is probably not one of the more cerebral positions on the field, but there’s an adjustment to be made from playing a 4-3 NT to a 3-4 DE with a different team. That’s all I’m saying. I think that given my own distaste for LKS, I’m okay with this move now. At first I was a bit on the fence. No more.

If he can open up holes for DJ or Mario, then I'm all on it!
We need a mean SOB to bust people up and a 321#er along side of Jamal Williams…Yikes!
Flexibility
in addition to depth, he allows the Broncos to move to a 4-3 if necessary. He also has experience against Jacksonville, the Broncos first opponent. Any edge, any edge at all.
Big body in the middle Big man eats blockers Big man does not have to learn much playbook as Big Man stays in the middle of field
I actually think in the 3-4 scheme the actions of the players are less playbook related as much as physical size and speed and durability related. That is the primary action of the three man front in a 3-4 defense is just to clog things and react and stand there ground or collapse the pocket and free up the four linebackers to do all the fancy stuff and schemes behind them. Big and fast and strong guys in the line can probably catch on to the specific team nuances pretty quick.
How Vickerson was acquired from Tennessee..
Tennessee opened the third and final day of the NFL draft on Saturday, April 24, 2010, by trading LenDale White and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson to Seattle all to move up seven spots in the fourth round from No. 111 to 104th overall and nine spots in the sixth. They used that first pick on UCLA cornerback Alterraun Verner.
OR..........
He just might be used as a run stopper. I mean a guy that size could be difficult to move out of the way and force the RBs to detour to another hole or get smacked……
Frankly, none of us have seen enough of Wink’s D to have any real idea of how he plans to use the players he has.. Seems a bit premature to me to make any definitive judgments…..
I'm still wondering if Wink was using a vanilla defense duing preseason not to show there hand...
He made it clear in pressers that we were going to be a lot more aggressive and I haven’t seen much of that on pass rushing.
McDaniels seems to have a thing for picking out 3-4 talent that has been playing in 4-3s
Dunno how good he is at it, but Jason Hunter, Mario Haggan, Vickerson, Joe Mays, and even to an extent Jarvis Moss have all been given chances in the 3-4 when the league was kind of down on them playing in a 4-3. So far, Haggan was a great pickup, Hunter and Mays seem to be doing well, and Moss at the very least seems improved.
yeah sure does
not sure if there are others but those are the ones i could think of off the top of my head.

If it works out that
we can solidify our LB corps by this strategy, it would seem to allow the use of our draft picks for other needs…and thus have a quicker path to a full complement of players at all positions. The caveat is that the new players absolutely must be improved players in their new positions for the Broncos, of course. You might be onto something here, black-knight. This may even play into our not drafting LBs this last draft, which has puzzled many. If McD and company were to be employing this strategy, they would have to REALLY trust their ability to assess a player’s talent for the new position based on film of him in the former position……well, nobody has ever acused McD of lacking confidence.
I have visions of Jamal Williams chewing up the Center and Right Guard while Vickerson chews on the Left Guard and Left Tackle...
creating holes for DJ and Haggan to pass rush along with Ayers…It will be a sight to behold.
What's his injury?
I mean, he has one, doesn’t he?
