A Question for the Draftniks

Is Nick Fairly really a better DT prospect than Marcell Dareus?

Star-divide

Is it a matter of upside, measurables, or just the fact that Fairly has been impressive in big moments and recently so sticks in our minds?

Fairly seems to bring explosiveness and big play ability to the table. He's definitely got a mean streak which you want in a lineman (as long as it doesn't go overboard. I get the sense that he's better suited to a 4-3 than a 3-4 though his size and athleticism might make him a heck of an end in the 3-4. On the downside, he's being hit with the whole one-season wonder label, so his body of work in terms of consistent excellence is iffy.

Dareus seems like he might be a bit less explosive (while still showing the ability to be plenty disruptive) but also have more going for him in terms of size and strength. He seems to offer schematic versatility in that he's capable of playing a 3-technique in a 4-3 or hold up on the nose in a 3-4. He also has been consistently excellent for a longer period of time than Fairly.

My initial sense is that Dareus is a safer pick than Fairly but that Fairly might have more upside. Given the state of the Broncos right now I'm not necessarily averse to safe over upside. So what say you? Is Fairly really a no-brainer over Dareus at DT or is he just shinier at this point? :)

Would love either one

But Fairley is my pick, we need nasty and rough and I think th le veterans will teach him nasty vs. Dirty. Fairley or DT 2011.

2/3 of the earth is covered by water the other 1/3 is covered by Champ Bailey!

Dareus is my dude

I like Fairley, but Dareus just screams 10 year starter (from day one) to me. I’m not exactly Mike Mayock though, so I’m not sure I’d listen to mwah. Dareus is bigger, stronger, and better in run support (I’ll take a beast run stuffer / gap plugger, before a flashy playmaker anyday – WE NEED TO SURE UP THAT PANSY RUN D!!!!).

You don’t need to ask a question. All anyone is doing on here is watching them play and saying which one is better. I think you bring up some great points about Fairley. Personally, I don’t think Fairley will be taken in the top 5. I think there is a lot of hype around him because people have seen him play more and he was on the national championship team. Bowers and Peterson, IMO are far more elite prospects at their positions. In other words, Fairley is probably the best one-gap DT prospect in the draft, but Peterson and Bowers are head and shoulders better than the other CB/FS and DE prospects in the draft.

If we go to a 4-3 I do think that Fairley would be preferable to Dareus. Dareus is a discliplined player who will take on o-lineman. I think he would be better in a 3-4. If we take Fairley and play in a 3-4 still, I do not think that he will have anywhere close to the impact that you would want out of a top 5 pick. In addition, we could probably pick up Dareus a lot later and get more picks, if we were to take him.

But, IMO we don’t take either of them. I don’t think you can consider need as much when you are in the top 5. If you are going to use that pick you take the best defensive player available or trade back. But there is not a single position on our defense that couldn’t use an upgrade. Peterson is a straight up game changer. He would also give us an unreal return man.

I would be happy with either one also

but my preference is Dareus as he has proven to be scheme versatile, having played DE, DT, & NG at different points. It is not a certainty that Fairley can. It is believed he can b/c of his athletic ability, but not certain. Then there is the whole one year wonder thing that people keep tagging both Fairley and Bowers with.

Just my 2 cents

Dareus has been very solid in his time at Alabama.
2 years of consistent production despite losing plenty of surrounding talent last year.
2009: 33 tackles, 6 sacks.
2010: 33 tackles, 5 sacks.
He’s a good run stuffer but he can also apply pressure to the QB.

People are enamored with Fairley because he had a year that was out of this world.
2010: 56 tackles, 12 sacks.
For a defensive tackle in the SEC, that is unheard of. He has been the most dominant player in college football.

So the common perception is that Fairley is “better” because his 1 good year.

In my opinion, Dareus is a better run defender. So if we stay with the 3-4, I would rather have Dareus. He is big, strong, and has the look of a 3-4 DE. The primary job of a 3-4 DE is to hold the line and let the linebackers make the plays. Dareus would do a better job of this then Fairley.

On the other hand, Fairley is a better pass rusher. He is a master of getting after the QB. So if we switch to a 4-3, I would rather have Fairley for his pass rush abilities from the 4-3 DT position. He would make a bigger impact then Dareus.

Both are really good prospects, but I think Fairley is the better prospect in the 4-3 while Dareus is the better 3-4 prospect.

The case can be made for Dareus over Fairley

We’re still a long ways away from the Draft and performances at workouts/combine/Senior Bowl will all shakeup the draft projections. I would describe Fairley as the “in” prospect right now, he’s had a dramatic rise up the boards and his play of late may or may not warrant it.

Dareus was never going to put up the big numbers. As a LDE, he’s always attacking within the vision of the QB and won’t register that many sacks. He was a beast in the Capitol Bowl as MTD profiled here. Honestly in that game, he looked stronger than Fairley and more athletic than Bowers, but I don’t think he’s played to that level all year. He also only started 4 games in 2009, which doesn’t give him a huge advantage in experience.

With Fox talking about a hybrid defense, his versatility to play multiple position on the line may be intriguing to the Broncos. A lot will depend on what the Broncos want out of a defensive line player, but it’s not crazy to put Dareus over Fairley at this point.

I was eleven when Elway made the "leap" in Super Bowl XXXII, but I like to think that's still the moment I was conceived. Go Broncos!

A 3-4 would be a waste of Fairley’s skills. Dareus is much better suited for 3-4 DE than Fairley — more consistent, better technicals, personality, better run stop awareness.

In a 4-3, Fairley would be the explosive missile — great for pass rush and collapsing the pocket and leaving gaps for the Mike to cover. Dareus would be more an anchor type. For different reasons, both would improve the player on either side and give them better opportunities.

If we are staying 3-4, I don’t think a 3-4 team has ever used a top-5 slot for a DE. 4-3 DT is positionally more valuable to a 4-3 than 3-4 DE is to a 3-4. As reflected in the average paycheck they get.

I'm going to do what everyone is doing,

which is giving opinions without any real facts. Dareus has one more year under his belt. So what. We’ve seen what Fairley has to offer. I like what I see. Fairley is the more explosive, nastier player between the two. He reminds me of Ngata. Not size or technique wise, but attitude wise (ask Ben’s nose).

That is the single ingredient our defense has been lacking for a long time now. It’s time to change that. I like Dareus, and PP. I would be thrilled if we end up with any one of them. I’m starting to warm up to PP, admittedly. After watching Revis play, there is no doubts a supremely talented cover corner can change the complexity of a game with the snap of the fingers. Having said that, Fairley is still the guy, at least in my humble opinion. Sometimes an attitude adjustment is what’s needed. I think he can help do that for our defense. Just my .02.

I would concur with most of these posts

Fairely would be wasted in a 3-4, while Darius would be a better fit there.

Easy to say,

but prove it. You can’t. It’s just an opinion, same as everyone else. There is no definitive proof that he would be a waste in the 3-4.

His skills are just suited better for a 4-3. Of course you won't find "proof" because he doesnt play in a 3-4

I dont think he will be bad in a 3-4 just because his power should translate well into the NFL. I do think it seems like he would be even better in a 4-3.

If Carolina doesn’t pick Fairley – and Buffalo announces that they are returning to a 4-3; there will likely be some definitive proof that Fairley is better in a 4-3….We will get trade offers from 4-3 teams that are better than us picking him.

Fairley

was quoted as saying he doesn’t want to play in cold weather. If that is true, he hasn’t been drafted yet and is setting parameters for where he goes. Seems like a very big flag to me!

Honestly,

I think Dareus will be a Ty Warren type player and Fairley will be a Richard Seymour type. The all time leading sacker was a 3-4 end and Fairley has unreal potential.

Comparing the 2 is like comparing apples and oranges, they both are good and which favor do you want...

Or…What Xanders/Fox wants. At #2 you better be sure of your choice and we have a lot of college football left to think on a good choice…One thing for sure, the player has to be elite at that pick not a hopeful prospect. Another comparing factor can be, is there a similar player in the 2nd rd? From what we’ve seen and heard neither one of those boys are a once in a long while prospect, because there have been some who have come out lately with the same skills and similar features…This is a once in a life time pick for us and it is very important that we get it right this time…

Past post

There was a brilliant examination on the relative chance to draft an impact player based on round, and slot within the round.

If I remember correctly, the #1 spot has a lower chance than the #2. Spots #2 to #16 were practically identical in odds. These aren’t odds based on random chances of course, but the point being is that good drafting outweighs draft position, which I think we already knew.

Agreed With PaleHorse "Dareus is my dude"

Fairley says he doesnt want to play in the cold, haha, for whatever thats worth
Dareus can be had at 6-8 probabaly allowing us to trade down and stockpile picks as well
