Cops: Denver Broncos Running Back Was High on Drugs, Carrying Gun

It's been reported by the star chasers on the TV show TMZ, that Denver Broncos running back Laurence Maroney was high on drugs AND in possession of a firearm when cops arrested him in St. Louis last night ... this according to law enforcement.

The St. Louis PD tells TMZ that the 25-year-old Maroney was arrested for possession of marijuana and unlawful use of a weapon. Cops say while Maroney has a valid "Conceal and Carry" permit -- he was arrested for packing the gun while under the influence of drugs. Maroney was in a car with 5 other people late Monday night when cops say they observed "several occupants" of the vehicle smoking what was believed to be marijuana. Five of the six people in the car were arrested and three firearms were discovered during the bust including two handguns and a rifle.

It's unclear which gun cops have associated with Maroney.

Maroney's rep had released a statement saying, "Mr. Maroney was unlawfully arrested for possession of weapons. He holds a permit to carry a concealed weapon and he had his permit on his person when he was arrested."

The rep added, "He was not arrested for any drugs nor was he involved in a high speed chase. He was released without being charged with any offense and we do not anticipate he will be charged with any criminal offense."

Totally off-topic, but although there is no research for MJ specifically,

there is fascinating and very thought-provoking research going on in a field now named epigenetics. This field looks at the function of all the rest of the chromosome that is not DNA…the epigenome. Whether it be smoking (nicotine), alcohol, diet, level of exercise, etc, it apppears that we can alter the expression of not only our own DNA during our lifetime, but also that which we pass to our children. We are not just our “DNA,”….we are the result of which parts of our DNA are active and which are inactive, and our bodies are flexible enough to alter that composite of expression even during our lifetime, AND THEN to then pass the alterations onward to the next generation. It’s fascinating to consider what changes in long-standing belief systems are going to occur over the next 10-20 years. Male or female, we appear to be passing onward consequences from our environment and our choices in that environment, and at the genomic level…thus a choice such as smoking, deciding to do memory exercises, deciding to not exercise, and so many more …they all appear to affect not just us, but our children. In one study (Sweden?) even emotional states such as level of anxiety appear to be changing expression of our genetic options, and then be passed in our gametes to our children. This could explain some of the data out of the transcendental meditation studies of the 80s and 90s that have been so hard to fathom. Thus, it appears that it is not just ourselves that are affected by our choices…our sons and daughters are also. Of course, what is beneficial change and what is detrimental is a very fertile area for speculation and introspection.

ON TOPIC- the guy seems to have made a really poor choice if he want to succeed in the league…maybe he has given that goal up, and maybe that is why he never reached his “potential” (whatever that means..hate that phrase).

Most, not all...

Smoking Marijuana is what is known as a victimless crime, and the legislation surrounding this plant is archaic and it originated from false pretenses. There are laws all over this world that would not be a sign of bad character if they were broken. It’s all a matter of perspective, be thankful you live in a country where you and a16416 have a right to one.

Its victimless for the user, but i dont think anyone truly knows what goes on behind the scenes. Your going to tell me that supplyers and dealers dont ever get into the odd arguement? Marijuanas is never laced? Kids dont use it? Accidents dont occur because of driving under the influence? I think thats why its not legal. However, if it was legal, that would make much more sense as the gov’t could regulate it. Until then, people caught under the influence, or with others who are deemed in possesion are breaking the law, and we dont need that on the Broncos.

its just a tad confusing to read “weed is illegal cause of this” “‘this’ is cause its illegal” “marijuana is bad mkay”. Ok might have got the quotes wrong, but ya know what I mean :)

by droom on Jan 18, 2011 1:46 PM MST up reply actions

Smoking Marijuana is the crime I was referring to being victimless; not black market politics, not trafficking, not lacing with harder drugs, not selling to minors. Marijuana is extremely benign compared to other substances that other individuals on the team are known to use (Google Images of Kyle Orton). However, just like any other substance it can be abused, but literally anything can be abused if not used in moderation. Aside from all that, Maroney wasn’t even doing anything ‘wrong’, there were no charges pressed. So what is it that you are saying we don’t need on the Broncos? We don’t need an overrated running back? That’s the real question…

In Maroney's case, I would agree that the mix of gun/drugs is tell-tale of bad character

but I find offence to the blanket statement as a person who has broken the law in the past(nothing remotely big) and knows plenty of good people that have as well.

And part of being American is standing up against laws we feel violate our freedoms, not bending over and taking it because its law. Its why women and minorities can vote. Its why our workplaces our 1000x safer than a century ago. Our country is so powerful because its flexable and able to correct mistakes. This is one that is soon to be corrected. Having alcohol legal but weed illegal is pure hypocrisy.

Being on any drug that affects you and carrying a gun is stupid and should always be against the law. I actually think its true

I was watching a lecture from VS Ramachandran on humor and how it came to manifest in the brain. He makes a very compelling argument that humor is our own internal “false alarm” system. Think of it this way, when you see someone fall, if there is blood on the ground, you go and help. However, if they start to get back up just fine, you start laughing, giving an audible noise to let others around know its a false alarm. Now of course it has sociologically evolved since then, but thats where it started. If you think about a lot of types of humor, the “false alarm” context seems to explain a lot, for me personally.

Now what happens most often while high? Laughter. Lots of false alarms due to being paranoid and at times hyper-observant. Sometimes that hyper-observance is focused on introspection, hence the dazed out stereotype.

There is a reason New England got rid of him

He stinks, he had a decent O-line there and still couldn’t do anything, he is a waste of space on the roster, and I also find it curious that he was deactivated late in the season in favor of Ball, so that tells you how much faith the coaching staff had in him.

I agree he hasn't lived up to his potential

But I’m just of the mindset that he could still turn that around with a little work and some good holes. Plenty of people gave up on Brandon Lloyd before he came here, sometimes it’s just finding the right scheme to give a player success.

My main point though is it bothers me that so many people seem excited for him to crash and burn. They’re like sharks in the water smelling blood over this. There’s no reason to hope he gets in trouble with the law, especially when there’s a good chance he was totally innocent in all of this and the cops should be the ones in trouble.

He shakes and bakes too much for my taste.

The NFL is way too fast. He should just pick a place and go. If he hasn’t learned that by now, he is uncoachable. Therefore, I say release him. Chalk him up as if he is a 4th rounder that didn’t work out and move on.

If the guy wants to jeopardize his career by hanging with the wrong people, there are 224 people in this draft willing to take his roster spot. I for one wont remember him 10 days after he is released.

Marijuana is no worse than alcohol

though to be driving under the influence of either while in possession of a gun is stupid. Are were sure he doesn’t play for the Portland TrailBlazers instead?

When first reported I was worried it was Travis Henry situation. Or a Vance Johnson situation. Or a Tyrone Braxton situation. Or he could have ran over some people like Mike Pritchard.

It’s magnified since Maroney was terrible this season, but stuff like this happens too often, unfortunately.

TMZ is a guilty pleasure of mine, but they’re like an annoying girlfriend that thinks they know more than they do when talking about sports. If Maroney is a ‘star’, C-Buck is getting fitted for a mustard jacket.

No Story!

No charges, none anticipated. Had licence on his person…. Sounds like a slow news day. Don’t really care for Maroney. He seems to be keeping ‘less than desireable company’ for someone in his position – but the story is nothing at all

by Flunkie on Jan 18, 2011 10:51 AM MST reply actions

agree that legally this is probably a non-story

however, it does show poor judgement on his part, and given his terrible on field performance (he has zero burst left), I say he’s a headache we don’t need anymore. A bit of thuggery may be a cost of business for some leite talent, but Maroney is a sub-replacement level player, so there is no reason to put up with it.

Given our early season RB injuries last year and promise he showed early career, he may have been worth a shot (a 4th was too much for a guy NE was gonna cut, but whatever), but once he showed that his poor NE performance was more than just needing a change of scenary, he’s proven he’s not worth a roster spot.

Replacement level guys like Ball, etc. are far better values for the roster slot, so to Maroney I say “Bye Bye!”

This is news?

Who cares about a worthless, overpaid, never amounted to anything as a professional football player who, most likely, will not be invited to the Broncos training camp?

MHR is becoming border-line Denver Post. What’s next in the way of “breaking news”?

Are we going to hear about what the National Enquirer has to print on the subject?

I didn't see "breaking news"

this is a blog, everything posted gets on the front page. Its not indicative of importance.

Its about a Bronco player, it makes sense that MHR would have either an article or fanpost/fanshot about it.

Well kind of surprised...

To read this kind of post on MHR is new TMZ stuff. Well the NFL reported that he was arrested but not charged. More to come. I hate judging before all the facts comes out. Probable wouldn’t have made the roster but now he’s got an uphill battle for sure.

Giving up a #4 pick in the 2011 draft for an injured player by McDaniels ranks high as one of the worst trades in Bronco history. Only the Steve Tensi trade was worst IMO.

Typical media garbage

But most folks eat it up like candy. Smoking pot is not going to go away. In California it’s an industry. I was surprised prop 19 didn’t pass. MADD opposed it. Maybe that’s why. I could care less if Maroney smokes pot, didn’t smoke pot but knows guys who do, and whatever else. It was stupid to be in the situation he placed himself in however. I do agree that I hate looking online and the 1st thing I see is a Bronco got arrested for what -F’in-ever. I want to see us spoken of in positive ways for good things our players do on and off the field. Is that asking too much?
