Every year before the draft, I try to identify which defensive playmakers I consider low bust risks. Not necessarily the players I would automatically take with a 1st round pick -- but the players who will almost certainly develop into solid, if not elite, NFL starters. So who are this year's no-busts....
My way of picking these players is simple. Look at the top 50 TFL (tackle for loss) players v BCS teams with winning records - for this year, last year, and the previous year. If they are on two of those lists, they are a no-bust. I don't use sacks because that is too much a function of specific position and the stats get a bit fluky because of the "shared" sack totals. I don't use tackles because that doesn't tell me whether they are an impact player at/behind the line of scrimmage. This TFL tends to eliminate too many DT's and 3-4 D-line -- but they don't tend to be drafted for pure playmaking reasons anyway but for their ability to handle double-teams.

I'm always surprised how few draft picks make this cut each year. Karl Klug is clearly the late-round sleeper here. At least, I've never heard of him. The only two players who have a chance to make the 3 year top-50 for 2012 are Sean Spence (Miami) and Julian Miller (West Virginia)
So -- if these really are the no-bust playmakers in this draft -- which of them have the most upside? Which player do you think will have the most significant NFL career? If any of them make it to the 2nd round or later, will the Broncos pick them?
