E. Dumervil for M. Williams?
Is this an out of the box idea that could benefit the Broncos?
"Junior from RAF Lakenheath wants to know if I think Denver could trade Elvis Dumervil to Houston for Mario Williams.
BW: I see why you thought of this, Junior. The Broncos are expected to go to a 4-3 defense and Dumervil is best suited for a 3-4. The same exact opposite is occurring in Houston, where Williams is best suited for a 4-3. It makes sense. But it might be one of the deals that makes so much sense that there’s no chance it would happen. I don’t know if these teams would have the guts to do it, although Williams would probably be a better Bronco than a Texan, and Dumervil would likely be a better Texan than a Bronco because of the scheme changes. My best bet is that each team will try to fit these immensely talented players in their new schemes and see what happens."
Ok. So i pulled this question and answer from the AFC West Blog at ESPN and looked through the last few days of posts and did not see anybody talking about the idea, so i figured i would put it here.
Before anyone jumps all over me, I am a Dumervil fan and love him on this team. Watching him during the 09' season was fun and he is a very stand up guy, playing through his brief contract dispute and such. There is no reason I don't WANT Dumervil on this team.
M. Williams is a beast in the wrong system. I know his NUMBERS don't look great, but his presence alone changes things whenever he is on the line. He seems like a stand up guy who has not caused Houston any problems, a good human being just like Dumervil.
Man, this sounds like a win win for both teams. Their contracts are relatively close to each other in overall money. We could trade Dumervil for Williams and grab D. Bowers in the draft and that would immediately give us one of the best lines in the league. This also might be an incredible option as there might be a rookie wage scale in place by the draft (lets keep our fingers crossed the CBA is ironed out by then) so Bowers would not be as expensive as a #2 pick normally is.
Of course, it would be a mega trade and like B Williamson said, it's not very likely. But how do you all feel about it? Does anyone else agree this might be an amazing move no one is talking about? Would Houston even consider it?
Sound off knuckleheads!

agreed
Even though he is a better all around player than Doom, I still prefer Dooms elite edge rushing. Besides, Houston wouldn’t consider trading a defensive stalwart like him anyway. They’re trying to get better on D, not worse.

What Is Mario Williams contract situation
Didn’t he originally sign a 6 yr. contract meaning it would expire at the end of this next year. I guess it’d be a good deal for the Broncos if Elvis couldn’t come back from injury and wanted to dump Elvis salary and get another salary that would be coming off the books.
However, football wise I don’t like the deal
People forget that Elvis got several of his 17 sacks in 2009 from a 4 down lineman formation.
Also Dumervil and Williams were drafted in the same year, 2006. And I believe Dumervil has been every bit as productive if not more than Williams regarding sacks.

I call "crazy"
It is a crazy idea. Could it work? Sure!
Would the teams agree on overall terms? It’s possible.
Would it work ‘for the best’ for both teams and both/(all) players? Again, possible.
Do I think it’ll happen? Heavens no.
Do I want it to happen? Heavens to Mergatroid no!!!

Not a good trade
Williams has already become a hero in Houston, and is one of their pure blood Texan players who is actually succeeding. Plus it’s trading one young, talented DE/OLB for another.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
uh
williams is a 4-3 end. doom isn’t. he could be, but he has shown his greatness comes from rushing the passer from the olb spot. care to debate? please just save us all the trouble.
Shakespeare sang air on air, so I sung. Shakespeare turned dust to dust, so to my life.
Doom actually has played more 4-3 then 3-4
And it’s a fact he’s had success at the 4-3 spot, just a fact, debate away.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
lol, love u bro

I'm with you on this one Max
Doom will be fine back in 4-3. I mean the guy only racked up 26 sacks in three years as a DE – there’s no way he can do it again? Especially considering he’s evolved as a football player the past two years as well.

He's still young
Would I prefer him at 3-4, sure, but I still think he was and can be very successful in a 4-3.

if we are going to the 4-3
I wouldnt mind this trade, Both players are great in there D, but since both teams are changing their schemes, why not
live and die blue and orange
Elvis is a better pass rusher than Williams. I’d rather keep Elvis and draft/sign some better run stuffers at DT and ILB.
I’d take Elvis over Williams 10 times out of 10 on a passing down.
No one wants to read your 14th attempt at a mock draft and it's only January for goodness sakes.
yeah, but what about running downs?
for the record I’m not sure where i stand and i probably agree with you, but doom is a liability against the run. and although i haven’t watched enough tape on it myself, I seem to remember hearing that that was a strength of williams’.

Doom is best suited to
line up outside the tackle in passing situations. 4-3 or 3-4 shouldn’t matter as much as we think it does. Doom got 60+% of his sacks in Nickel or Dime in 2009. The rest were passing situations (1st & 10 or longer or 3rd and 4 or longer) where he could line up outside the OT and pin his ears back.
Doom is very effective when he lines up just outside or way outside one of the tackles. His ability to get his pads down and beat the OT with speed and angle is unparalleled.
I don’t think base D matters as much as where he’s lined up on the field.
I did a post about that subject where I watched every 2009 sack. Doom’s just a stud. Theh biggest thing is where to line him up. He could hypothetically line up as an 4-3 OLB on 1st downs (as to stay outside the OT) and line up as a more traditional wide DE in more obvious passing downs/situations.
It’d be a shame to move Doom, especially when we will be pumping up the quality level of the players around him over the next few years.

Go Broncos!
With new DC Allen stating
that they are going to identify what skills current team members have and how to maximize what they have I don’t see this really happening. Doom played well when he played in a 4 -3 defense. If the Broncos can find some nasty dline and lb’s it would help Doom become even better.
IF this trade was to ever happen ... I would not hate it.
It would be one of the most fair trades I can think of.
The deal makes a lot of sense for both teams
its probably not gonna happen, but both teams would benefit from this.
Doom is a true 3-4 OLB, weighing in around 250 he just doesn’t have the girth to be effective against the run without a space eater in front of him. Williams comes in around 285 and is a classic 4-3 DE; he plays the run just as well as he plays the pass.
Given William’s and Doom’s near folk hero status for their respective teams I don’t think either GM would have the guts to attempt to make this trade work. What if Xanders tries and Houston refuses? Doom would have every right to feel slighted (though I wouldn’t expect a Cutler reaction) but the man wouldn’t be happy.
I honestly believe the deal fits both teams and most certainly puts the players playing their natural positions. But its a little too risky on both sides to happen.

Agree with this entirely...
If given the opportunity I’m about 50-50 on whether I’d pull the trigger. As OP suggested, if we get Mario and draft Bowers we’re looking pretty solid. I’d also hate to give up Doom. I’m honestly very torn on this one.
In the end, I doubt Houston would go for it because Doom is coming off a serious injury and Mario isn’t. That would scare me away from the trade if I were them.
If I had a dollar for every Super Bowl San Diego has won, I'd go window shopping at the dollar store.
Hmmm!!! Very interesting idea. I like it.
Williams help win the trenches on every down. Hmmm!!!
Elvis win in the trenches on obvious passing down. Hmmm!!!
Very interesting idea. I like it.

I have no idea but I loved this
He seems like a stand up guy
Pun intended?

Can't happen....
But I would do that trade in a second.
Call me a heretic, flying in the face of the Church of Doom, but I just don’t see him keeping up the production.
Dude is too small and too one dimensional.
It was a nice story…..and I hope he keeps it up….but just dont see it.

I suggested this very trade on Mocking the Draft a few weeks ago
in the comment section of a Mock draft. It was turned down by a Texans fan, so I offered to throw in a bag of Rocky Mtn Oysters and was still turned down.

Sigh. Why people? Why....
….do people keep proposing trades to get rid of the actual talent we have on this team? Trade Doom. Sign and trade Champ. Sign and trade Harris. Seriously? Is it just because it is just a fun project to see what we could get in return….or do some of you really want to gut the team of all existing talent and truly start from scratch? It’s mind-boggeling to me. But then again, with my simple mind, it doesn’t take much to boggle the mind.

First, Adding Williams to replace Doom would not be ‘gutting’ the team. It’s a tit for tat move.
For the record, I want Champ, Doom and Harris on our team. Champ is still productive, and while Peterson looks great we need a D-Line overhaul before anything else. We play 2 power running teams and with P. Rivers looking fantstic, he can set up the run all day long with play actiion in the first part of the game, pound it later on.
It was not a project idea of my own, I just saw the post on ESPN Blog and wanted to post it here to see what peeps would say. What’s the problem with talking about something? I praised Doom first thing in the post.

….it just seems we are entering video game/ fantasy football trades lately and not trades that have more than a remote chance of ever coming to fruition.

While any idea is worth looking into
I think it’s a bad idea. If I was the coach, I’d want to take a look at his performance level after rehab anyway. If we were still in the SB race Dumervil would be ready I think. You know he’s doing whatever he can to be the player he was prior to his injury. At least I’d be if I was he. A guy with his attitude and work ethic wants to get back to where he was before injuries. And as far a the Texan’s go, they’d never pull the trigger on a move like that. They love Williams as much as we love Dumervil. Just sayin’

Yep...
and an injury like that takes time to regain strength even after it’s healed. 6 or 8 months of not being able to work the muscle at all has got to make a difference (no doctor, just going by common sense, which is not always correct).
If I had a dollar for every Super Bowl San Diego has won, I'd go window shopping at the dollar store.
Has anyone heard anything on his rehab status?
I’ve been asking this question for the past 4 months BTW. I’m 55. I used to do weight training until I was 50. I was huge and I blew out my right bicept tendon. I had it reattached and my doc told me it would be 100% in 6 to 8 months. She also told me to stop weight training :(. Anyway I came back 100% as promised but did follow her advice. I’m just happy I can swing a golf club still. But since Doom was injured I’ve been wondering how he’s been progressing in rehab. I expect he can come back 100% but have heard little but speculation.

I would feel bad
about Dumervil leaving. He gives us everything we’ve got. As everyone knows, I do have a pragmatic football mind but when it comes to my Bronx, my heart transcends my better judgment as everyone can attest to here I’m sure. Thus, I’m not the best person to offer an opinion on such an important matter as this is.
