Trade Bait and Potential Partners Game
There is plenty of speculation about what we can get for Orton. Personally I'd love a 2nd and a later rounder. And yes, I know, its immaterial until there is a CBA. But what the hell is there to do?
I think our biggest asset at this point is out receivers. We've got tremendous depth here and given that we have a ton of holes on the D, and we seem to moving toward a run based O, it seems natural to leverage this to get some more talent. Here's what we have:
B Lloyd
E Royal
J Gaffney
E Decker
D Thomas
K Britt
M Willis
I may have left of a practice squad guy or two.
Now let's play a little game. Let's say for the moment that no one is safe, everyone is on the block for the right price. Let's also say that draft picks are out. We want immediate contributors, we are only talking to people that can trade a player. In my opinion WR's have been undervalued by trading draft picks (Santonio Holmes for a 4th rounder) anyway. Play along, ok?
Teams with serious WR deficiencies:
Indianapolis
Tennessee
St Louis
Kansas City
New England?
Washington
Tampa?
Cleveland
I probably missed some, feel free to add teams. Ok now, start proposing trades. I'll start:
B Lloyd for Robert Mathis, IND
B Lloyd for Patrick Chung, NE
J Gaffney for Chris Long, STL
E Royal for A Haynesworth, WAS
B Lloyd for Brian Orakpo, WAS
Thoughts? Love it? Hate it? Got some ideas? Discuss and trade away...

Why do you think we have depth at WR?
Lloyd, Gaffney and Royal are proven NFL players. Thomas has played some, made a couple of good catches, dropped some easy balls, and has gotten hurt more than once. Decker has a handful of regular season catches. Britt and Willis….do they have a single NFL catch between them? Yes, these guys look good in the preseason, but McKinley led the Broncos in the preseason 2 years ago and he was cut the next year. My point is that we may have depth at WR and we may not….but they are certainly not proven depth at WR. I have high hopes for Thomas and Decker but they need to prove they can do it first. Let’s wait another year before we proclaim we have depth at this position.

what proven depth do we have that most every other team doesn't have?

OK, I looked it up....
…after our 3 starters, Decker, Thomas, Britt, and Willis have 28 catches, 22 by Thomas. I am guessing if we compare that to the backups for most other NFL teams, that is hardly better depth then they have. Again, I have I hope and there is potential (as most other teams would also say about their young backups), but lets see them do it for another year before we can really call it depth.

Agreed but...
Don’t you think Decker and Thomas at the very least, and possibly Britt and Willis are starters in the making? And if so why not trade at least one current starter to fill some defensive holes?

or Orakpo
i would rather have Orakpo in return. we would have to give a little more up for him than Haynesworth but i think it would be worth it
BRIAN ORAKPO, 19.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles in 31 games
ROBERT AYERS, 1.5 sacks, 1 forced fumbles in 26 games
*both came from the same draft class
Royal isn't going to get traded. Gaffney is the only one that might get traded.
Other than that, I don’t see the broncos trading any WR’s.

Lets not create another need...
Keep this group intact… so we don’t have to draft for depth at WR…

with our new offensive scheme. Can you name any Carolina wideouts other than Steve Smith?

Indy doesn't have WR problems
They were just all injured last season. I’d take their corp over most in the league.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
I also think
You are being a bit over optomistic for what can be had with these players.
Orakapo and Long were high first round picks playing coveted positions, Lolyd had a great year but is older and doesn’t demand near the value of the above 2 and although Gaffney shows flashes, he is a complementary player at best.
I would agree on Orakpo..
That why I had him going for Lloyd, but Long has underachieved, although 8 sacks last year seems to be improving.
'Always smell it first.' John F Kennedy
OK
So if you are stating that Long has underachived, why would you want to trade for him? Just posing the question becasue I believe the answer to it is as all fans we want to get great value in return for giving up little value, and although I would love that trade the reality to me is that the Rams would never do that trade, nor would Washington.
And
Long would be in my mind a huge upgrade and would be well worth giving up Gaffney and Lloyd. But that is also exactly why I know it wouldn’t happen. Same with Orakapo.
You have to give up something to get something. Just saying
Its not about what I would propose
You made your prosal on this thread and asked what others thought of it, and I am telling you that your sense of value for both team is skewed towards the broncos, which most fans of their teams are going to be.
And I choose to wait until there is discussion owtwardly in the different media outlets of any potential trades and comment from there to get a sense of what another team is interested in.
At this point the only player I see “potentially” moving from the broncos roster is Orton, and more than likely for an additional draft pick, any other additions/subtractions would be through FA and or cuts.
And
I believe that Long and Orakapo would be huge up grades and would in fact trade both Lloyd and Gaffney, if it meant either one of those players, but that is exactly why I know it wouldn’t happen becasue it would take alot if even if those team wanted to trade those players to get them.
You have to give up good to get good, Just sayin
It's all relative
The Broncs do have depth at WR compared to other positions, but that just tells you how weak the overall roster is at this point. My guess is Orton is the only starter from the beginning of the year that gets traded, there are a bunch of upgrades from below average to average through free agency and the focus is on the draft.
absolutely not on lloyd
Id rather trade Gaf. Lloyd bailed Tebow out of a lot of throws and Tebows gonna need him next season
"It's all over fat man!"
-Tom Jackson
You have really over valued our players
You think Colts would trade Mathis for Lloyd or NE would trade Chung for Lloyd or even Gaffney for Long? It would never happen.
Chris Long was a 1st round pick and a big player in their defensive surge this season
Chung is one of the best defensive players on the Patriots and Belicheck has showed that he doesn’t need high priced or old receivers. He makes due and the Patriots don’t have a need with Receivers
The Colts are actually quite deep at WR. They have Wayne, Collie, Garcon, Gonzalez and White. Not to mention Clark. They seem like they lack depth because they got hit by the injury bug. I imagine they will look to the draft again as they have in the past for WR help.
I like the idea but I just don’t think the trades are reasonable. I think the most we’ll get out of trades are draft picks and 2nd tier players
Tim Tebow wears 3WM and drinks Tuscan whole milk.
Everybody's a critic...
but no one wants to propose trades… weak :P

You threw it out there, you didn’t ask for others trade proposal. I would just say if you can’t handle the critisim, then don’t throw it out there, and don’t ask. Otherwise, man up.
weak?
This thread is weak.
Why don’t you just begin the thread like this, “first, we get my cousin big Mike to meet Bellichik at a bar, big Mike can drink like crazy, and then we start making proposition bets…”.

The last thing to improve the defense
is trade Brandon Lloyd. He is the one offensive player we have who consistently helped the defense with is play. He was our most reliable option for picking up first downs which makes the defense look good since they can’t give up yards and points when they are sitting. He was also our most consistent option for scoring TDs. I know it is blatantly obvious, but points make a defense look better as well. If you score a TD it gives the defense room for error. Basically, I believe that Brandon Lloyd is the only player that showed that his play can make both sides of the ball better.
The other thing to consider for Lloyd is what he means to the development of Tim Tebow. Brandon Lloyd’s ability to win jump balls, contort for bad throws, and (finally in his career) consistently make the easy catch gives Tebow some extra room for error as he grows as a QB. While confidence is not something I worry about a lot with Tim, I still prefer that he gets to adjust to a mistake throw down the field with a smile on his face cause Lloyd made a play than have to spend a minute or two shaking off the pick he just threw.
Finally, we won’t get what we need on defense in an equal value trade for Lloyd. DT and DE and far more valued positions than WR. You simply will not get an elite defensive lineman in exchange for an elite receiver. You also won’t get an elite pass rushing OLB for the 3-4 scheme. The other LB positions in a 3-4 or 4-3 linebackers are the front seven defensive players you might be able to get equal value for and it’s up for debate whether or not that would improve your overall team.
ok your issue is others won't purpose trades
how about we do purpose trades the other teams might like
Ryan Clady for Long, St. Louis tackle was hurt and didn’t look promising to protect Bradford
Orakpo, sign and trade Champ Bailey but because of age issues throw in Gaffeny and Royal. You don’t trade Pro Bowl OLB going into his second year for on the down side of his career CB.
Chung, well maybe DJ Williams. I know alot of Bronco fans don’t like him but coaches do who watch alot of film. Shanny signed him to a huge contract and McD said he wasone of his favorite players. I’m sure the Pats coach would like another very good LB, the Pats don’t pay alot for WR’s
Mathis, Clady again would be the only one I see the colts possible interested in. Keeping Manning upright would be worth pressuring every QB they face
just wanted to throw some possible none Bronco trades out there per your request
