1912 Football in Colorado: Artifact Question

A few years ago I was going through my parent's photo box (they don't really have albums just a big cardboard box with about fifty years worth of photos in it - it's as big a mess as it sounds) and I came across an old photograph that was mounted on cardstock of a football team sitting behind a fatter-than-today's football on which was written " '12 Champs".    The 12 men/boys in the picture couldn't be more than sixteen or seventeen tops (see below).

This was kind of an odd thing to be intermingled in with our family photos.  When I asked my dad where he got it he remembered having acquired it when my family lived in Cripple Creek (Colorado) in the late 1970's and early 1980's (my dad was a gold miner - seriously).  He hadn't seen the photo in years and told me that it was a picture of Cripple Creek's football team that had apparently won some sort of championship in 1912.  Sure enough on the "jerseys" are a sewn double "C's" (presumably for "Cripple Creek".  Actually, only seven of the twelve have double "C's" - the rest have only one "C".  Times were apparently tougher in 1912.  Those things cost money you know.

Back in those days Cripple Creek was a booming mining town (bigger than Colorado Springs at one point or another) and so it makes sense to me that football would arrive there (especially since, as I understand it, football took hold blue collar industry towns around that time). So I know this is slightly off topic for the Broncos, but I haven't been able to turn anything up on anything at all regarding it.

I haven't found any mention of any football in Cripple Creek before the (current?) high school was built well after 1912.  Further, I have no idea what they were the championship of...  Who did they play?  Did they know how awesome the John Elway/John Fox/Tim Tebow trifecta would be a scant 99 years in the future?  Seriously, all I have to go on is this one photo and nothing else.  If anyone knows anything about early (pre-historic and mountain) football in Colorado and could help me out, I'd love any help.

It's an enigma that now hangs on the wall in my hallway.... Who are these people?  (Pardon the crappy cropped and blurry scan - the photo is a weird size and my scanner sucks....  It would only scan as two photos instead of one.... It's the Chris Simms of scanners)
