MHR Poll of the Week: Trade Deadline Fun

Don't worry, no cheerleaders were traded during the making of this post. (Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)

While there are rarely huge moves the week of the trade deadline, this season seems to go the opposite way, with a number of moves already made. With that in mind, I wanted to have some fun with this. I set up a number of situations for some fun trades that could shake up this team.

Now don't worry, I talked a number of fans from these teams and tried to get us the best deal, and between myself and these four other staffers, we felt we came up with some fun ideas. A special thanks to some of the guys from Jacksonville, Miami, St. Louis and Philadelphia for helping me brain storm this stuff.

Star-divide

The Trades:

A Note:

I included Kyle Orton and Brandon Lloyd in all of these options for a few reasons, Lloyd is only in two, it's surprising how many teams would take Orton, and their offers make it worth it to lose our backup QB. Secondly for Lloyd, I have heard so much talk about how veterans are just holding are young players back and how the season is lost, so since Lloyd seems to be not quite up to his 2010 level, we should try and get some high value for him before he just leaves in FA. Add in the return of Royal and DT would replace him, at least in the sense that some fans want. One thing about Lloyd that we have to remember is that one good year does not a great wide receiver make, add in his well known character issues, his value outside of Denver is much lower than we would expect. While he does have value, especially to a team in need or that is familiar with him.

Option 1:

Trades:
- Denver trades Kyle Orton to Miami for Tony McDaniel and a 6th round pick.
- Denver trades Brandon Lloyd and D.J. Williams to St. Louis for Justin King and a 3rd round pick.

Denver Gets:
- 6th round pick (Miami)
- Defensive Tackle Tony McDaniel (Miami)
- Cornerback Justin King (St. Louis)
- 3rd round pick (St. Louis)

Miami Gets:
- Quarterback Kyle Orton (Denver)

St. Louis Gets:
- Wide Receiver Brandon Lloyd (Denver)
- Linebacker D.J. Williams (Denver)

Explanation:

Denver needs to clean house. Heck more fans here than any other Denver site have been saying we need to dump older players since we are rebuilding. These trades would net Denver two mid draft picks, and two young players at key positions of need for this team. We cut a fan headache by trading Kyle Orton to a Miami team that, despite what we know about Orton, he's an upgrade at quarterback there, and since Tony Sparano's job could be on the line, a mid pick and a backup DT are worth the price. Add in most Miami fans seem to want Orton over Moore or Sage. We also trade Lloyd and Williams to a St. Louis team that needs to improve against the run and in the passing game, and since McD does have a strong connection to Lloyd, having saved his career, I'm sure Sam Bradford would be happy to see a player like that with the Rams. Out of that trade we get a mid round pick and a starting corner in Justin King who will be an upgrade over Willis or Goodman, and instantly start. We upgrade at defensive tackle and corner and cut players that might not be here next season anyways.

Option 2:

Trades:
- Denver trades Kyle Orton and Jason Hunter to Jacksonville for William Middleton and a 6th round pick.
- Denver trades Brandon Lloyd and Jacksonville’s 6th round pick to St. Louis for Justin King and a 5th round pick

Denver Gets:
- Cornerback Justin King (St. Louis)
- 5th round pick (St. Louis)
- Cornerback William Middleton (Jacksonville)

St. Louis Gets:
- Wide Receiver Brandon Lloyd (Denver)
- 6th round pick (Jacksonville via Denver)

Jacksonville Gets:
- Quarterback Kyle Orton (Denver)
- Defensive End Jason Hunter (Denver)

Explanation:

Another set of trades that remove players that are holding younger players back, or are replaceable, and trading them for two mid picks and two starters. Jacksonville needs a backup, because no one in their right mind thinks Luke McCown is anywhere near a starter if Blaine Gabbert goes down, Orton is there to help. Add in Del Rio needs to at least win some games to keep his job, if Gabbert struggles, Orton can step in. We also throw Jason Hunter in to shore up a struggling defensive line. In exchange we get a starting caliber corner in Middleton, at least starting as in he's better than Goodman or Willis and a 5th round pick. St. Louis as we mentioned needs a wide receiver and they need him now if they want to catch up in the NFC West, Lloyd is that man. We flip Jacksonville's 5th rounder and Lloyd for another young starting corner in King and St. Louis's 4th round pick. We end up with two young corners, both are 26 or younger, and a 5th round pick. Our secondary is instantly set and we don't have to worry about drafting a corner in the next draft.

Option 3:

Trades:
- Denver trades Kyle Orton and Eddie Royal to Jacksonville for Terrance Knighton, Deji Karim and a 6th round pick.
- Denver trades D.J. Williams and Deji Karim to Philadelphia for Mike Kafta and a 3rd round pick.

Denver Gets:
- Defensive Tackle Terrance Knighton (Jacksonville)
- 6th round pick (Jacksonville)
- Quarterback Mike Kafta (Philadelphia)
- 3rd round pick (Philadelphia)

Jacksonville Gets:
- Quarterback Kyle Orton (Denver)
- Wide Receiver Eddie Royal (Denver)

Philadelphia Gets:
- Running Back Deji Karim (Jacksonville via Denver)
- Linebacker D.J. Williams (Denver)

Explanation:

As I mentioned in Option 2, Jacksonville needs a backup who can start if needed, they also need a slot receiver, Orton and Royal fit the bill perfectly. In exchange Jacksonville sends up Deji Karim, starting defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, whose young by the way, and a 6th rounder. We then ship Karim to Philly, who is in need of someone to take the load of McCoy, and Ronnie Brown ain't cutting it. We also send Williams who will be a big upgrade for that defense that needs to improve now. We get Kafta, who like Tebow is a developmental guy, but considering Reid drafted him, he's like a lock to be a quality backup or starter. We also take the Eagles 3rd rounder. We pretty much shed unwanted or underachieving players in exchange for two picks, a quarterback and a young, talented defensive tackle, I don't see the downside.

So let's put it to a vote, if you had to choose one of the three, which would you go with?

The idea that Orton carries trade value like you’ve projected above kills this article for me. With his contract, I don’t think he is trade-able. We won’t be able to sell him on a bad team like Miami. Maybe a good team like Atlanta or the Jets that wants QB insurance, but I highly doubt it. Orton would be really expensive short term insurance and based on how he played in 2011, crappy insurance.

I’m for trading DJ, but I still think we should resign Lloyd. He’s a real weapon in a passing NFL. He is our best WR. Hands down.

I’d be happy if we traded DJ for Philly’s 3rd.

I’m not saying a don’t believe you about the Iggles sucky linebacking corps, I’m just saying that DJ ain’t your answer to the problem.

If you like linebackers who take bad angles to the play and make the majority of their tackles 4 yards further down the field than they should, DJ is your man. If you like linebackers who are supposed to be captains and leaders on the team, but decide to stupidly head-butt other players on the most crucial drive of the game, ultimately resulting in a touchdown for the other team, DJ is your man. If you love linebackers who can’t cover anybody, zone or man, DJ is your man. If you like oft-injured, sissy-boy “linebackers”, DJ is your man. If you like linebackers who ooze talent and back it up with the determination and drive of a goldfish, DJ is your man.

By all means, have a talk with Andy, persuade him to send us a second for DJ. I will literally buy you your very own Williams jersey in green and have it shipped to you.

Fix the line, Moreno will be fine.

I think you’re expecting too much out of a Ws Lb. Other than his dislocated elbow what other injuries has he suffered? The dudes a tackling machine. I’ve seen worse angles and blown coverage from Joe Mays and more illegal contact and pass interference from Woodyard than I’ve seen from Dj. Woodyard just doesn’t get called for the contact. Watching his right hand hooked around the tight ends back while he bats down a pass with his left a few seconds before the ball arrives.
A problem I’ve seen from a lot of fans is that they act like their shit don’t stink and hide behind the keyboard and talk bad about what the players do in their off time.

Not Lloyd

After seeing Lloyd’s catch on the sideline (and others) he is one of the best at catching balls that aren’t thrown in the “catchable” areas for most WR’s. He’s done it time after time. I’m a Tebow fan, but also a realist. Tebow needs a receiver like Lloyd right now . . . we’ll see how things go down the line . . .

I tend to agree with this

I wouldn’t be mad if we did trade Lloyd, but he’s fantastic and he’s got a few years left that I think are worth paying him the money for. He’s come into his own in a Broncos uni…I’d like him to stay.

I love me some Tebow, but I agree with this completely. Lloyd is a stud… you don’t trade studs for peanuts. Do we think it’s a coincidence that Lloyd had his best play of this season in the short time Tebow was on the field? Playmakers influence other playmakers into… you guessed it…. making plays.

I’m stoked on Tebow making some noise with Lloyd, Decker, D. Thomas, Eddie, etc….

I agree, but watching Lloyd this season

With both Orton and Tebow, it’s clear that he, personally, isn’t where he was in 2010, and if he could jump ship to a place like St. Louis and go to a much more pass happy offense, with a better QB, and Denver gets a starting corner for the next 3-5 years, I’d take it.

I suggested calling the Rams this offseason about Lloyd

and seeing if we could get a Dion Branch type deal or a 2nd. Nobody around here thought this was a good idea. Too late now, leverage is gone.

One thing that Tebow is willing to do is throw the back shoulder pass. This pass requires less accuracy. This is were Lloyd and Tebow will do the most damage.

Thomas, Royal, Decker and Lloyd makes for a crowd. Thomas would not net us much on the market and Decker is not going anywhere. Lloyd’s contract next offseason will be interesting.

Not really a fan of trading Lloyd

he’s a very valuable receiver, as in he can bail out a QB from bad throws (hint hint, love Tebow but I doubt he’ll be throwing darts day one). He’s in the last year of his contract so we’ll likely get no value for essentially a 10 game rental. I think having him here will make Tebow better and after the year then he walks and we won’t have to pay him a good contract.

Vehemently opposed to trading Royal. Sure, he has been disappointing since his rookie year, but I think we have a player in him which coaches have not used effectively. If McCoy feels he can’t do it, then trade him, but I don’t see the benefit of trading a good young receiver for 2 backups on a bad team. Knighton’s pretty decent though, but not worth Royal.

I wouldn’t mind trading any of our older guys and Orton. If we can get any value for them or a couple young guys, I’d say pull the trigger

not saying we should let him walk, but I see more value in keeping him for the rest of the season and then letting him walk then I do in getting a 6th round pick.

I don't like trading Royal either

I think he’s a great slot receiver, but when I did this practice I was actually negotiating with other writers who were acting as GM’s for their teams.

jealous

sounds like fun. Wish you could’ve got more value for Royal though. Knighton would be a nice young DT for us, but as of now he’s a rotational guy. We have a bunch of those on our team, what we need is that beast to anchor the middle.

Deji Karim is meh for me. He’s averaging 2 yards a carry, and while he can’t be worse then Laurence Maroney I’m tired of plugging below average backs in this O since Shanny has left.

Great post and its a very interesting topic. I think for me though this helps prove we shouldn’t be looking to go into a firesale. Mid season trades likely wouldn’t give us fair value.

It was fun

I wanted more value for Royal, but Knighton is young and considering our DT’s, he’d start, we need that. As for Karim, he’s just a flip that we use to get more value from another team, we don’t keep him.

Thanks again, and this was mostly for fun, none of these are going to happen.

with Decker emerging, and perhaps D. Thomas playing a game or two before he stubs his toe and is put on IR, Royal also has value on special teams. Wondering what Cosby thinks about Royal’s return . . .

This is a blatant lie

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Broncos are unlikely to deal Kyle Orton before the October 18 trade deadline.
“He’s going to finish the season in Denver,” said Schefter on SportsCenter, “…because of that overbearing salary.” Orton has a $7.379 million base salary, and any interested team would have to pay the majority of it if they were to acquire him. ESPN’s John Clayton also considers an Orton trade unlikely. The Broncos should be kicking themselves for not completing an Orton trade when they had the chance with the Dolphins in late July.

Was wondering

if Orton thought he could get a decent contract somewhere, could he waive any part of this year’s salary. I am thinking his options are better now when teams are looking for veteran backups, than as a free agent after this year . . .

by bronco.fan on Oct 13, 2011 3:39 PM MDT up reply actions

No...

I’m with Gil Brandt. Trade Orton to Miami for a bucket of chicken and a third round pick, and then send the bucket of chicken and the pick to Carolina for Jimmy Clausen and a Starbuck’s gift certificate.

The only problem I have with that is that Lloyd can play. Clausen cannot. If we’re gonna have Tebow start, I don’t know how having Clausen backing him up instead of Quinn and Weber is much different.

Also, I would rather have chicken than coffee any day of the week. But, we don’t even have to do that.

Let’s say, Orton to Miami for a fourth (not entirely unrealistic since Denver will have covered almost half Orton’s salary for this year by the time the deal is done) and a bucket of ordinary tap water. Save the pick. Give the water to Tim Tebow and have him turn it into wine.

You know, because his tears cure cancer and he rides a unicorn to work every day.

Switch the wine with the Fins’ Gatorade on the sideline next Sunday.

Result: Broncos win. In all respects.

I am a genius. Feel free to email all your problems. I will solve those, too.

Look at who they have

Talking to Dolphin fans and writers, it makes sense, and since they have no problem spending money, that wouldn’t be an issue. Add in solid WR’s (and Marshall) a good set of backs in Bush and Thomas and a decent line, it’s not a bad situation. We get some good value and they get a possible starter, no downside.

It's possible

that the Broncos could eat some of Orton’s money. I do think it would be best for all concerned for Kyle to move on. I have always liked Kyle, and I wonder if the constant drum beat of criticism (from people that wanted Tebow) didn’t have an effect on him. Orton’s a tough guy, but that was incessant. Don’t be surprised if he does very well elsewhere.

desperate for a DL since we didn’t draft any. Grasping at straws.

Not to sound like a homie but I was really hoping we'd trade back to get that DL from Purdue

(who’s name right at the moment escapes me) who is now starting for (who’s team now escapes me) or the other starter, Maurkice Pouncey

I don't like any of those trades max...

1st of all: I think we had a very great corp of WRs and we had a downgrade here… ending with “just” a great one. So I wouldn’t like to weak it a bit more trading Royal or even Lloyd (who I’d like us to resign him).

2nd of all: Because I think we are still not solid at the LB position… and sending DJ away, although being a strong “change-coins” (I really don’t know how to say MOEDA DE TROCA in english, but I mean a worth player to get great value back from it), could devastate our D. We are rebuilding and he is a great tackler and still our best LB (still Miller is very new to the game)…

About Kyle, I’d love to get some value from him… but I really think we will end without it.

The main reasons these trades are the ones I came out with

Out of the like 10 that were on the table is that we cut a lot of our older players, Lloyd is 30 this year and DJ is over the hump. I agree we would be thinner at WR and LB, but all this season we’ve talked about rebuilding and the need for younger players to get more playing time. Without Lloyd, DT and Decker would likely be our starters, and Royal would still be here for two trades. Also I think that if we can pick up two starting corners who are under 27, that’s something that can’t be passed up.

Thanks, I do enjoy toying around

And that’s what this was, I just got some educated fans from different teams and mocked some stuff up, I’m 100% sure none of these trades happen.

I just read an article by Jason Cole on Yahoo

It said we should trade Orton, Lloyd, Dawk, and Bailey. I was wondering if anyone has thoughts on this. I can see trading Orton but I don’t agree with the others.

by Bronco Rob on Oct 13, 2011 2:43 PM MDT reply actions

I think Dawk retires after this year

We need to keep Bailey and Lloyd though. Lloyd is good insurance for a developing QB like Tebow. Does it seem to anyone else that Lloyd sucks at YAC? I guess it doesnt matter since he’s already like 30 yds downfield, but it always seems he just goes down immediately after the catch, even if there’s a couple of open yards ahead of him.

I had seen those

And his thoughts and values support mine and the guys I did it with, so that’s comforting. I’m not sold on trading Dawk unless we trade for another safety somewhere else, our secondary sucks bad enough as it is.

I really doubt they’d trade Champ after just signing him to an extension. Dawk … let’s be honest: who would want him? This is his last year, for sure. Same goes for Orton: who would want him? He’s the best backup QB in the league, his salary is ridiculous, and he’s a free agent after the season.

by EddieRoyalwithCheese on Oct 13, 2011 5:59 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

Actually a number of teams want him

Four expressed interest this off-season, and at this point I know that Miami and Arizona wish they’d taken him. “His salary” argument is also a bit off since the new team only has to pay a portion of the contract, about $5 million, much better, especially for a team like Jacksonville or Miami. Another note most people forget is both of those coaches are on the hot seat and need to win to keep their jobs.

by Topher Doll on Oct 13, 2011 6:05 PM MDT up reply actions

I think Lloyd is going to help Tebow a ton.

A., he can make insane catches. B., he’s going to draw coverage, which means that as long as the playcalling isn’t insipid, he helps other guys get the ball. A young QB benefits immensely from having a WR like this.

As far as trading for picks, it would have been a bad deal under McD since he couldn’t draft a truck if he was tied to it. Judging by last years’ draft, the new regime might be better at drafting. So that maybe makes picks more valuable.

I’m not 100% sold on trading away DJ Williams. Orton, sure I’d trade. But his contract is so big, I’m not sure anyone would take him. We’ll see.

by Orange Rush on Oct 13, 2011 3:18 PM MDT reply actions

One thing about Orton

Is that the new team will only take a bit over $5 million, not his fill $9 million, which is much more managiable for a team like Miami that would likely start him.

I'd only trade Lloyd if I got a good deal and

DT was healthy and ready to go. I think once DT is back 100% he will start to cut into Lloyd’s production.

by trumanj on Oct 13, 2011 3:23 PM MDT reply actions

According to Fox 31 news

Lloyd is being shopped around for future picks, but not DJ Williams. We better hope bey bey can stay healthy

The Denver Post is reporting it as well. I hope we at least get a third round pick. It would be a shame to loose Tebow’s security blanket for anything less

At least according to fans

And analysts he isn’t worth a 3rd, Reggie Wayne is reported to be worth around a 4th and he’s a much better player and worker.

Can we trade Lloyd for Reggie Wayne?

Lloyd seems like an awesome worker on the field though. He has a ton of energy.

But I promise you one thing: a lot of good will come out of this, You have never seen any player in the entire country play as hard as I will play the rest of this season and you’ll never see someone push the rest of the team as hard as I will push everybody the rest of this season, and you’ll never see a team play harder than we will the rest of this season.
