state of the bronco union

i love my broncos, and since i've been in exile in the far north i've gotten more insight, laughs and just good old football knowledge (in nebraskan, nahlej)  from mhr than anytime since when i lived in denver.  so here goes my first post; state of the broncoland.  where are we, where are we going, and are we happy about it?  Chime in.  odds are pretty good you're more right than i am.

where we are:  a rugby buddy taught me a new term -- "hospital pass."  you pass to a guy with a defender bearing down on him.  he catches -- he is obligated to catch, only wusses gator arm things, right? and gets laid out, wakes up in the hospital.  hospital pass.  did fox and co. get a hospital pass?  kind of, but not for typical reasons.  the cupboard was not as bare as the msr made things out for fox and friends.

qb:  kyle is an ok qb.  flame me, but i believe he can be on a team that wins a championship.  i just don't think he will be the one to win it.  he is trent dilfer.  problem is, he didn't have the d, the te's, and the ol is improving but suspect.  so he is out, probably soon to be gone, and we get tim.  i keep thinking about the preseason, when tim ran over that bengals safety, hebert, for a td.  awesome.  love the moxie.  but dumb idea.  and worse; tebow is now coached by fox.  mr fox seems like a nice man.  but he also does not seem to be the most imaginative light bulb in chicken coop.  and i don't think tim fits elways (may he live forever) concept of an nfl qb, either.  and xanders?  tell xanders what to do and he will fit it under the cap.  just don't ask him to make personnel decisions.  so here's the reason for the hospital pass -- fox and elway (may he live forever) don't naturally fit with a qb like tim, they don't like it, they don't believe in it, they aren't expert in it and they don't want to do it.  if tim can adapt to their mold he's in.  if not, hello mr. first round 2012.  and that's too bad.

d:  on the d side of things, we're far better than i hoped.  we didn't do any of the things i thought absolutely imperative to address the d line. early on,  we didn't sign the big name, or really, even a medium sized name (except Warren, i know, i know). we didn't draft dareus -- everyone wanted to draft dareus.  not me.  i'm far too smart for that.  i wanted to draft peterson.  doh.  and it turns out, even with injuries, our d line is ok.  it can be pretty good.  lbs -- i cry uncle.  von is the man.  very exciting.  i don't know what to say about joe mays.  love the dude.  wish he was faster.  dj -- i don't get dj, i think his days in orange are numbered.  but overall, lbs are ok.  backfield?  we need another corner.  champ is awesome.  dawk in coverage makes me cringe.  dawk in run support is a thing of beauty. overall, this d is way better than i thought we could be.  kudos mr fox.

the rest of the offense:  oline; in progress.  love franklin.  beadles may have been a whiff.  still wish we had taken the big florida center pouncey.  wrs:  no freakin' clue.  royal?  crap.  i like royal.  lloyd?  i'm sick of wr's named lloyd who want the ball and more money. cya. decker's looking solid, no idea what to think of dt. but if he is ever healthy this may actually have been a good draft gamble by kid mcgenius.  statistically, he's due a few successes.  tes:  in general, i think teams should have tight ends.  they can be very useful.  what we have right now are retreads or hopes for the future.  but it's no wonder orton got creamed.  rb;  willis is a stud.  if he is still playing, and playing at this level, at the end of the season, he will have been a steal.  it will also be a waste of a remarkable season for an aging back.  knowmo is looking very bustish.  too bad.

where we've been; through hell.  you remember looking at raiders fans a few years ago and wondering why they still cheered?  thinking, quietly, to yourself, 'if they're a raiders fan right now, then they are true raiders fans?'  we're there.  we traded away cutler -- huge mistake!  Hillis, huge mistake even if he is a prima donna who will only ever have one good year. traded bmarsh, thank god, can't stand the dude, you read his latest from miami?  shef -- large-ish mistake. and now, possibly, orton, lloyd, royal, anyone else?  but to be fair we have to balance this with all the acquisitions we got from them!  right?  like phonz, quinn, quinn again (for hillis) -- yech.

Where we're going?  basically, we benched orton and the season was over, we're now in the longest preseason ever, outside of detroit or buffalo.  and therein lies the hope.  in my heart of hearts i think tebow could be a great nfl quarterback.  but i don't think it will work for fox.  i think we rebuild completely, lead by defense, new qb, new wrs, and we do it in -- what does it ususally take fox?  three years?  and the cupboard really wasn't that bare.  Clady is awesome.  Doom, Ayers is coming along, walton is looking satisfactory.  and efx seem to draft well.  von miller is spectacular.  franklin -- ok, ok, pass blocking will come.  he's awesome.  rahim, nate, thomas -- real hope for the future.  these guys draft well, and most importantly they will bring consistency and respectability back to our storied franchise.  it says here we will be back in the hunt in 2014, von miller will go to his second pro bowl, qb x will be a rising star, and tim tebow will be sporting a deep, arizonian tan.
