Eron Riley Signed By NY Jets Off Broncos Practice Squad
According to the Denver Posts Mike Klis, Wide Receiver Eron Riley has been poached off the Denver Broncos Practice Squad by the New York Jets.
The Broncos had Defensive Tackles Trey Lewis, Guy Miller and Nose Tackle Sealver Siliga in for try outs yesterday and signed Siliga to the Practice Squad. Also, Fullback Austin Sylvester was released from the PS to make room for Siliga. Wide Receiver D'Andre Goodwin has been signed by the Broncos and will replace Riley on the Practice Squad.

Not happy
I really like this prospect. Now he’s on the opposing team in 4 weeks when we play the Jets.

Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but Eron was one of my favorite prospects since we signed him to the PS last year. Hope he gets a chance to do some work.

He was INHO a poor mans Lloyd.

Riley could have been MORE valuable than Lloyd...he had the same deep threat potential...he was faster and he didn't demand timing/route plays to be effective
Check out the multimedia clips on denver broncos.com from the Arizona Preseason game. They had Eron Riley telling a funny story about that touchdown from Tim Tebow that said it all. First Eron Riley is fast. Not because I saw he was fast but because HE said he was fast…Eron said he believed nobody could catch him…and not in a prima donna way but in a way that you know he was going to make the team. Eron and the Coach then recognized one on one coverage. Then Eron talks about what Tebow told him in the huddle before that perfect touchdown throw. Tebow told him “Go. Run. I’m going to get it there for you.” Eron said he told Tim “You get it to me…I’m gonna make a play.”
This is a loss.

yes.
I meant to post the BTV highlights not those other highlights…
The Broncos Camera Man captured the tight spiral of Tebow’s touchdown throw and Dave Logan acknowledged that Riley beat 5 year cornerback Fred Bennet on the play.

This is BAD. This is a mistake by EFX.
They should not have allowed Eron Riley to go anywhere after letting Lloyd go.

Broncos remain kings of personnel ineptitude
Eron Riley was one of the things exciting me about the future
It sucks to be stuck with two over paid under achieving
china dolls like Royal and Thomas.
Happy for him but I think that sucks for us. Trading Lloyd freed up a WR spot and it should have been his.
Tim Tebow wears 3WM and drinks Tuscan whole milk.
Lloyd's spot was freed up for DeM. Thomas
Hate losing Riley, but there was no wr slot available for him. Safety slot filled due to injuries in defensive backfield. At least Broncos picked up a DT on PS.

D. Thomas was on the PUP list at the beginning of TC
I’m not sure he ever came off the PUP list when he broke his finger. Here’e what Legwold said about the Lloyd spot going to Thomas:
“The Broncos traded Brandon Lloyd, a wide receiver coming off a Pro Bowl season, to the Rams on Monday in part because they believe the 6-foot-3, 229-pound Thomas is ready to make an impact. This despite Thomas appearing in few practices this season and no games because of his Achilles tendon and hand injuries.”

by OrangeandBluesBros on Oct 19, 2011 2:18 PM MDT up reply actions
No, he did not go on the PUP because they thought he would be ready to go early in the season, then he broke his finger and had to wait longer.
However, I agree with your general sentiment about his roster spot. Having him on the roster inactive each week doesn’t mean that when Lloyd goes there is now an empty spot that must be filled by a WR. The Broncos apparently feel that five healthy WRs are plenty to have on a week-to-week basis.
Having x number of position players on the roster when one of them is injured doesn’t mean we will carry x once they are healthy. It’s like when Warren went on IR we filled his roster spot with Jeremiah Johnson because we needed depth at RB.

Saw this coming.....
We trade away a pro bowl receiver for a 5th/6th round pick. It makes sense that the rest of the league would say “wow they must be deep at WR. let’s take a look at the practice squad”.
I was a bit surprised by our safety pick!
We're up in arms about this?
If the front office really cared, he would have been promoted off the practice squad three minutes after the Lloyd deal was done. Riley is truly a poor-man’s Brandon Lloyd? Then how sad is that if he’s the poor-man’s version of a guy we just tossed for a 6th rounder?
Eron had some good moments in pre-season, but that’s about it. The Jets reaching for anyone they can get is no shock; their passing game is abysmal. I’m surprised they didn’t make a play for Lloyd. Odds are the Denver didn’t lose anything in this event
Mediocrity is like a lollipop: lick it once and you'll suck forever.
Sticking with Kyle Orton is like taking your cousin to the Homecoming Dance - you're openly admitting that you had no other options, and it's guaranteed that nothing is happening after the early dance.
Who do you like better, Improv88, DeM Thomas or Eron Riley?
Lloyd’s spot was earmarked for Thomas. No room for Riley unless Royal or Willis got injured or traded..

Thomas, hands down
Maybe my post came off backwards from what I meant. I don’t care that Riley was cherry-picked – I find it a non-issue.
I hope Thomas can finally stay healthy for longer than it takes to unlock your car door, because the little we have seen him makes me excited to see him. Riley could catch, but so can a lot of guys. This is really not worth moaning over.
How do you spell television ratings? T-E-B-O-W. At least more Bronco games will likely be on national broadcast.
Yep, up in arms about this.
Wondering why FO didn’t care and didn’t get him off the practice squad. And Eron Riley wasn’t a poor man’s Brandon Lloyd. Lloyd went for too little in the first place.
And in the second place…all we know is from preseason because that’s all we can know. That’s not a knock against Eron. It’s not a reach for the Jets if Riley can catch and we know he can catch…that’s why he was on our practice squad in the first place.
Odds are? would you bet everything on it?
"There's only one person who carries the ball right here..."
Riley = Goodwin = Dell = Willis = 4th or 5th WR. Willis is a little better than the rest because of his experience.
Really all these guys are more or less the same.

The FO has already shown some inexperience in regards to roster spots when they didn't put D. Thomas on the PUP but instead gave him an active WR spot.
That burned them when they had to use Tebow as a WR because they weren’t prepared. Now we have traded a WR and opened a WR spot. Why risk getting burned the same way. Promote your developing talent.
Who knows if he would have been successful or not but at least we are prepared with a guy who knows our playbook in case we run into injuries later on. Between Goodwin and Riley I would have preferred to have Riley because he seemed to have developed a chemistry with Tebow in the pre-season.

You can sign any off another team’s PS but you have to sign him to your roster and you can’t put him on the PS for 4 weeks I think.
So basically you have to take a guy who doesn’t know your system and isn’t good enough to be on his current team and then put him on your team and take up a roster spot.
Let me provide some perspective for everyone on the "OH NOES! WTF EFX MORONS!" bus
Riley was a good prospect. That was it. What I saw from him during the preseason didn’t impress me terribly. He has speed and that is it. His route running is not smooth or consistent which is one of the biggest things I look for and the thing that will make or break a WR in this league. His size / strength is not good enough to block in the run game (important for our offense).
I do agree that when we traded B. Lloyd we should have moved him to the active list, but it is no great loss that he has moved on. Willis is as fast if not faster than him and has much better all around skills to be completely honest with you. Take a deep breath people…it is going to be okay.

How DARE you SIR.....
bring some sanity to all the overreaction. What is up with the community, it acts like every player that leaves, gets traded or signed off the practice squad is a HoF. The reality is, in the last few years who did we really lose? Cutler is one of the most physical gifted quarterbacks, but no one likes him around here, so no big loss. Hillis is a really good power running back in the NFL, but MaGahee is a good power back too and there are more to be found. They don’t seem as common because coaches usually throw them on the scrape heap for some “faster” guy. Scheffler is a good receiving tight end, but others like him can be found and we probably have a couple on the roster now. Marshal was immensely talented, but also immensely troubled. Did the broncos really miss him? Harris was a quality tackle but would we rather have him than Franklin?
I know you don’t want to lose so much talent that as a team you are always reloading. But I really don’t think the broncos have done that. The only one that could really hurt is Cutler, if he ever gets his head straight, he could be really good. Again, though, nobody around here like him anyway.

Riley played more then good enough to earn a roster spot with us.

Gotcha!
EFX chose not to put him on the roster…specifically the F of that trio. I am pretty certain Fox makes the call of who he wants active on the team, yet your original point puts the blame on Xanders’ shoulders.
"Bombs dropping down overhead. Underground. It's instilled to want to live." -EV
It is my understanding that all of EFX had input into who made the team and who didn’t.
It is also the responsibility of Xanders to sign players when there are roster spots. So instead of signing Riley at any point this year, he signed Cosby, a 2nd FB and that safety we signed the other day.
We had plenty of opportunities to sign Riley and Xanders as well as Elway dropped the ball repeatedly.

Signing Cosby instead of Riley may have been an early clue
of what regard Fox had for Riley rather than an oversight of EFX. I tend to think Fox knows more than I do about the talent on the team even though I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express once.

Look, I understand the thought process in signing Cosby. He is a returner and we want him to take over those responsibilities so Royal doesn’t have to.
But why did we sign a second fullback? Larsen has been playing very well. Why not use that roster spot on a talented guy like Eron Riley?

Eron Riley is a practice squad scrub, if you play your cards right maybe he’ll end up serving you dinner or selling you a car because god knows this guy will be out of the league and long forgotten in a year or two.

Neither Terrell Davis or Eddie Mac were on our practice squad and I'm not sure about Sharp...
Anyway I didn’t like seeing him signed off the ps either but to call not signing him to the active roster as a failure seems a bit much when we have as many holes in this roster as we seem to.
JMO but was he worth a roster spot vs anyone else? I dont know but I do know if you sign a player off of someone elses practice squad you have to sign them to the active roster for 4 weeks so the FO also has to be able to pick up players and tie up those spots. It’s not just how many WR do we have on the active roster. Again JMO

We all liked Eron because he gave some good preseason moments
But we are in no position to really judge him as a player. It’s the same story with Syd’quan – I was way excited about him after watching him last year in the preseason. But obviously the coaches look at a lot more than that – so I’ll trust them on these prospect decisions. It was easy to root for Eron & Squid – but the coaches know a lot more about them than we do, so I default to trusting them until it proves to be a bad decision later.
Isn't Squid on the IR?
You speak of him as if he has been banished……
What makes you guys think you know what ElFox (I just made that up) did or didn't do to keep Riley?
Maybe they just got outbid. (Of course, I don’t know either, but I’m not whining about it.)
Question on PS players
Don’t you have the option to sign the player another team is intending to sign? They contact him and say they want to hire him off the practice squad. Don’t the Broncos have the option to promote him? Coudln’t they have taken someone else off the roster to make room for him?
GO BRONCOS!!!
no
he’s not under contract. Any team that hires them has to give them at least 3 game paychecks. Thus if we didn’t want to activate him for at least 3 games, we are SOL.
If we did activate him for 3 games, I wonder which WR would be placed on the PS? Surely they would have been a better pickup than Riley for the Jets.
My point is, there are 5 wide outs that were better than Riley. He might have shown some good promise, but thats the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. No use crying over it.
Q: Where do you go in Miami in case of hurricane?
A: To Dolphin Stadium - they never get a touchdown there.
Maybe......
it was a matter of numbers. Let’s see. Thomas, Royal, Deckers, Willlis…. Maybe four is all they need on the game day team? Add the TEs and then you can throw in Moreno, McGahee, and Ball, and I think you got a lot of guys out there who can catch the ball. Remember, this is a running team, which is why Lloyd wanted out.. And thank Jehova, there is always Timbo who don’t need no stinking WR cause he can run it…..
Drama, drama, drama. Oh, woe is us!!!! Darn.
Wanted Riley but ok with Goodwin
Riley was an asset in the Broncos practice squad. Goodwin might be good if we have any injuries.

he was on the practice squad for a reason.

I'm just sayin.
Orton was our best chance to look like we cared about wining. And Now that we can’t control our QB to loose the only thing we can do is take away play makers. Man I hope Not!

That's great news for Riley!
he deserves to be on a roster. I’m happy for the guy.

wasnt even
Our best inactive WR. I’m sure Mark Dell figures more in the long term plans than Riley, but he’s on IR right now.

We had no place to put him other than the PS
Not sure why all “the sky is falling” over someone who wasn’t even 5th on the WR depth chart. And with the promotion of Tebow, we are likely to see a lot more TE throws. So that would make Eron 9th (at best) behind the 5 WR and 3 TE already on the roster—and that’s after trading Lloyd. There simply was no place for him other than the PS. You hope you can hide guys there, but the reality is if a team has a more pressing need—they are going to poach those players.
He couldn’t crack the lineup for our special teams because he’s not a better return man than Crosby, Royal, or Decker. And, we already have Willis on special teams as well. We didn’t need him, but we liked him and that’s why he was on our PS.
The Jets likely grabbed him for two reasons: special teams help (they need it) and to maybe get a bit of scoop on Tebow plays that Riley was involved with during the preseason. We play them in a month, and Rex is known for bringing folks in that can give him some insight where he thinks he’s got blinders. It’s not likely Riley is going to see much of the field as a wideout, unless it’s a 4 receiver set. Even more likely, that they hang on to him for a few weeks, so how he works out on special teams—and if it’s not a fit, they let him go.
Good luck to Riley
Is this bad for us? It is if you got attached to the kid. This place has seemed to become a wide receiver factory the last couple of years, as pointed out to me by a few of my non-bronco fan co-workers. The loss of Riley is not what what bothers me. It is just that this shows what good teams do to make themselves better in areas where they need it. The Jets have issues at WR so they try to improve theirs. We need to get better at CB and OL, even if it is just depth, but we sit and fart around with mostly safeties and linebackers, with very few of these moves making any sense. This is not a good team obviously, but it is showing with the GM right now.

Are practice squad players privy to the whole playbook?
Any chance that teams will sign our PS players to get a grasp on what they’ll see against Tebow?

I think this happens a lot...
Teams sign recently release players too for that same reason. I’m not sure if PS guys know the game plan week in week out. I assume they spend most of the time learning the scout plays. But i’m sure they at least sit in on position meetings. So they could share general schemes, but not the team specific stuff that gets installed. (unless they are traded the week of the game)
That would be very lazy and inept of a team to do that
Especially when they pay scouts and QC coaches to do that. They had better be ready to play without the input of a poached player.

So much angst over losing a practice squad player
To start with I, like so many here, fell in love with Eron Riley’s potential this preseason and am sad that we have lost him. I imagined him becoming the next Rod Smith, a player who spends a season or two on the practice squad and earns his way on to the team and has a Hall of Fame worthy career. Realistically though, how likely was that to happen? Possible, but not not very likely. Not very many practice squad players ever contribute much. No I don’t have the stats to back up that statment, but if you have stats that disprove my statement, bring ‘em on. However, I am pretty confident in the validity of my statement.
For those of you who are upset that we lost him b/c we chose to sign a 5’11" Safety off someone else’s practice squad to replace Loyd on the active roster (I am too), but remember we are a little short of healthy bodies in the back end.
I hope Eron defies the odds and has a great career, preferably back here in Denver wearing the Orange, but if not, wherever he ends up.

I think I must have to go out and look for the nearest high bridge.
And we have no chance now this Sunday because of our practice squad shuffle. Woe is us, we’ll have to make do with roster players. Dang.

Good for Riley.
He sure looked good in preseason, and gets a nice roster spot on the Jets. Jets seem panicky, this season. It’s surprising they found out Riley, but it’s great for Riley to be able
to suit up for an NFL team. I think he’s going to make it in this league.
...holy freaking f*ck, snakes!
We poached Riley from the Ravens. The Jets poached him from us. So it goes. Not every hobo has a golden voice.

Wow....question, you know this guy was on the PS and not an All Pro WR, right? How the hell is this move even on the front page???
Foxy...you WERE on the hot seat, but you fooled me you rascally old deveil...keep building that team mate!
Kyle Orton - Thanks for the memories....I guess???
First we give away our best veteran WR, then we lose the WR prospect that a lot of us thought should have made the team during preseason. Cincinatti gets 2 high draft picks for a QB that hasn’t had a decent season in 3 years. Denver trades a pro bowl WR for a 5th or 6th round pick. Our FO has been the joke of the league for years.
