Willis McGahee To Miss 1-2 Weeks After Hand Surgery

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - OCTOBER 23: Defensive end Cameron Wake #91 of the Miami Dolphins tackles running back Willis McGahee #23 of the Denver Broncos at Sun Life Stadium on October 23, 2011 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images)

The load on Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow just got heavier with word that leading rusher Willis McGahee will miss 1-2 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone in his hand.

According to ProFootballTalk, McGahee had the surgery today and will miss at least a couple of weeks.

This is bad news for the Broncos who are searching for a consistent attack on the ground.  McGahee has 456 yards rushing on the year while the two men behind him - Knowshon Moreno and Lance Ball - have each rushed for 54 yards this season.  That's 108 yards COMBINED on 32 carries.

That puts more of a load on Tebow to create and with the Detroit Lions coming to town, more pressure on Tebow to create through the air.

I would look for

Jeremiah Johnson to come off the Practice Squad.

Even for just 2 weeks?

And risk losing him later? Depending on how well he plays though they might cut someone else. But I doubt they would keep 4 backs active.

Well

any activation would be a 3 week minimum. I’m not sure of Todman’s current status, but assuming he is on SD
s Practice Squad, if we took him he has to be on the Active Roster for the 3 weeks too. So given the choices between two PS players to fill in, do you promote the guy who has been practicing with the team or do you poach a player off another team’s PS. My guess is that they promote Johnson IF they make a move. Although I don’t have anything against Todman. I just think if he is a PS player, he would have to be better than who we have.
The reports are that Willis had surgery and wants to play. So its a wait and see type thing for the moment.

Detroit is the team im hoping wins the NFC championship this year.

Ive been watching all of their games… and i dont think even with McGahee our run game would stand a chance against that D-line. We will see lots of screens and passing against Detroit, there D line is probably the best in the league right now.

This could be a good thing.

Tebow needs to be in shotgun 80% of the time. He looks way more comfortable in shotgun when passing.

With McGahee out, maybe McCoy will be forced to put TT in the gun most of the game with Moreno in the backfield.

by McJay on Oct 24, 2011 2:01 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

Silver Lining?

McGahee has been killing it the last few weeks obviously we’ll miss him. It’s got to be crystal clear to McCoy we can’t run on every first down now. I thought I was watching Dan Reeves call plays through mos of the game last week. Please get creative McCoy. I don’t care if it’s using 4 receivers, running a few option plays, moving the pocket, bubble screens, bubble screen fake + drop back middle screen, something that get’s our speed players in space to operate and encourages Tebow to take off when there’s an opportunity.

Here we go...time for Ball and Johnson

Knowshon can’t do it…he just can’t carry the whole game and be productive. I hope ball puts his big-boy pants on and runs better up the gut than he did in the preseason. Yeah in his few runs he’s looked okay, but they have come after the game has been going awhile and the line got the holes opened up for him.

I really wish we would have gotten some more depth here at RB this off-season.

He also blocks very well as a RB. But my point is about carrying the workload. He can not do that because he is horrible between the tackles.

I don’t know…McD’s last game as coach, Knowshon looked pretty good between the tackles.

by McJay on Oct 24, 2011 3:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Knowshon can and has been the primary back and even gained 100+ yds. It is certainly possible.

I hope we run more of a spread formation and run out of the shot gun more. Tebow is more effective that way at passing and Knowmo is probably more effective at running.

If we come out with Tebow under center and hand off to Ball 2 times before a third and long…then it is going to be a long day. DET won’t stop at 15 points like the Dolphins did.

by Boiler etc on Oct 24, 2011 3:47 PM MDT up reply actions

I was saying the same thing but.....

…..some analysts today noted that all 7 of his sacks game in the 3 receiver set (think it was Legwold in the DP). He noted that he will get killed if we go to a spread too much. A spread means he needs to make quick decisions, not sure that is his strength right now. I think we need to do more rollouts, screens, a few spreads, reverses. We just need to become less predictable as an offense.

a more bunched defense, and Tebow had trouble with that yesterday.

"you need an effective pocket passer to win in this league"

EFX needs to have Tebow run the offensive so as to evaluate if he will be here next year. The spread offense has been tried many times in the NFL and it is too easy to scheme against. Just ask Steve Spurrier.

Spurrier didn't run a spread

It was as “pro-style” an offense as any. There’s some spread stuff these days in his offense at South Carolina, but that’s been a very recent development.

But the spread is creeping into the NFL. Carolina and Buffalo run it a lot, as do many of the better offenses.

Depends on the severity of the break, which of the meta carpels was fractured, and which hand.

Depending on those, its possible to still fully hold on to a football with a fracture in your hand. You just gotta be a man.

Lions D-Line is good at rushing the passer, not much else

If you look at their stats so far this year they are 28th against the rush and a variety of backs have had success against them. Where all their opponents seem to have found a weakness is in the short passing game. RBs, TEs, and Slot receivers have been eating them up all year. Ball and Moreno both are excellent receivers. We have all of our TEs back. And quick passes to both slows the rush and opens up the deep ball, as the Safeties cheat up to the line.

We matchup with them better than many might think, especially when you factor in a mobile QB that can escape the rush. Suh gambles a lot, rather than playing straight up. SF torched him several times because of that—as did Atlanta.

Would love to have Willis, but I think there are still some great weapons available to help Tebow in this game.

More opportunities for young players...

This is hardly a positive for the Broncos as a whole, but this would be far worse if Orton was still in. I really like McGahee’s power style and his productivity has been fantastic for the team, and has been proving he’s a workhorse back. Knowshon now has another chance to prove the same. We’ve all seen him run that screen pass against the Chargers showing both elusiveness and a hard-nosed style we haven’t seen much of. He now has a chance against what has recently been a hot/cold Lions run D. Much like the your WRs are getting more exposure, Knowshon now has another clean shot. Tebow can make up for McGahee’s clear RZ advantage over KM.

It isn't pathetic, it is smart

Ball can actually once in awhile pick up 4-5 yards up the gut…and normally will get 2. Knowshon regularly gets nothing or less up the gut and may get 4 if he’s lucky and the line opens a lane of biblical proportions.

Knowshon’s skills don’t lend themselves to running inside…he needs space and movement.
