A Bad Idea (but certainly worthy of a bar stool discussion!)

Like most of the nation of football fans….I watched in horror as Tim Tebow did a very bad impersonation of an NFL quarterback for the opening 55 minutes of the game last weekend against the Dolphins…the events and results have been well chronicled, and I take them at face value…a win is a win…congratulations to all involved…but it got me to thinking…

For most of the last two and a half seasons, we have watched as Kyle Orton drove the team up and down the football field, often with little to show for his sometimes gaudy stats…then as the game drew near a close, and the Broncos had a chance to win it at the end, Orton would then stumble…did he EVER make the play in the closing moments?  Did he EVER steal victory from the jaws of defeat?…wait, wait wait...it was a rhetorical question…I know the answer…NO!  Orton sits on the bench today because of his specific inability to make plays late in a game…plays that often determine the outcome, and often portray the quarterback as hero or goat…over the course of a season or a career.

The events of this weekend offer a perfect example…Tebow was clearly a goat for most of the game, but the fact that he made plays down the stretch, including those that eventually helped the Broncos win, made him a hero…bad as he played, he was a hero…and frankly, if he could go about playing that badly for the next 10 games, and then manage to steal the game at the end, we’d sign up for that…the coach would sign up for that…so would the GM, the President…the owner…because its all about the end result…it might make the first 3 quarters of the games unwatchable, but certainly the last 15 minutes would be appointment television…

Leaving me to wonder…is there an even better solution?   I recall old Washington Redskin games when Sonny Jurgenson would be brought in late and often won games the team otherwise would have lost…George Blanda served the same role for the Raiders during their heyday…the relief pitcher, only in football…Kyle Orton starts and plays the first 45 minutes…tries to keep the game close…maybe even watchable…and then in the 4th period, hands the ball over to Tebow who does whatever it is he does to fire up the team, and leads them to victory…

Might not be a good idea….but after watching the first part of the game on Sunday, it might have some merit…I frankly never want to see Orton play again…and I know that Tebow will get better (could he play worse???)…but let’s say he doesn’t…let’s say after a season or so like this, he simply does not improve the accuracy and touch on passes…there is still something undeniable that ought to have a place in this league…the closer role…the role he was apparently born to play.

Hope it doesn’t come to that, but that’s the view from this bar stool, in the middle of the week between games--it gives us something to talk about, no?
