Fooled Again...

I began closely following MHR about the time that Shanahan was in his death throes as coach of the Broncos...I followed along with interest as the Broncos hired McDaniels who then set about tearing down the franchise we all love.  At the time, there were a lot of apologists saying that McD was changing the culture and getting rid of the dead wood, and when he jettisoned Cutler EVERYONE tried to put the best spin on it, to the point that some actually embraced Kyle Orton as the better option (say what you will about Cutler, but there is simply no way that Orton is a better QB or that the Broncos are better off today, without Cutler, but of course that is long past)...we were fooled into thinking we had made a good trade and we were in a better place without Cutler.  Because we all want what is best for the Broncos, we all clung to that irrational hope.

In some sense, the MHR community tends to look at the positve and hence McDaniels was initially embraced and lauded, and then tolerated and finally villified...I myself wrote at the time of his hire, on this very website, that his was a bad move, because he would likely learn the job on our dime, get fired, and then go on to success for some other team (I might actually amend that, since I am no longer convinced he will be successful elsewhere).  But the MHR community remained firmly in his camp until his second season at the helm began to spiral out of control.  I must say, despite my doubts, it was hard not to root for him, since he was in fact the leader of my favorite team.  The optimism of the MHR community gave me a firm hope that this would work out.  Sadly, we were all duped to some extent…

In truth, McDaniels’ primary crime is that he was given way too much power for a coach so early in his career...The real mistake was made at the very top of the organization and frankly every decision made by the ownership and his advisors since the day Shanahan was fired have been horrible, up to and including the hiring of John Fox, for which I DO NOT GIVE THEM A PASS.  I was definitely ready for Shanahan to move on, but I never dreamed that his departure would be the first domino  in a series of cataclysmic failures...which CONTINUE TO THIS DAY.  So I pose to the MHR commmunity...are the Denver Broncos of October 2011 better off in any way than they were in December of 2008? (or whenever this sad saga in this once proud team's history began.) I am serious...not trying to go back to the old days or re-hash history...just looking at where we are now...is this a better place?  With this coach?  With these qurterbacks?  I have been an ardent fan of the team since the mid '70's...and even when we were not good back in those days, I never had such a sense of despair.. but somehow there is this nagging sense that we are still being fooled into believing this team is headed in the right direction…

I was not a fan of the draft day shenanigans that brought us Tebow, and I am no fan of Quinn or Orton, so for me, the looming  problem is that we quite possibly have ZERO NFL QUALITY QUARTERBACKS on this team...none...and a head coach that has a career .500 record and has won 3 games in the last two seasons, and an owner who seems unable to make a decent decision with regard to the future of the franchise. I keep hoping he will prove my feelings wrong, that his coaching will lead this team back to prominence and I will have to eat my words…but really, how does a coach that wins just two games in a season, get immediately hired to coach another team?

And though I am glad that the team opted for new uniforms next year, it seems ironic that the only tangible sign of progress toward better days lies in the fact that our uniforms will harken back to the good old days…you know, back when the team was annually a force to be reckoned with, that appeared in multiple Super Bowls and won two Lombardi trophies…I can’t help but feel like the front office is convinced that the only thing that needs changing on this team are the uniforms and then all will be fine.  We are being fooled again, it seems…
