Don't throw in the towel on the Broncos' season after just four games, there's still twelve games left to play
Here's the original FanShot. Here's the original article.
A popular cliché in the football world goes something like: It's not how you start, but how you finish (just ask the 2009 Denver Broncos, 2007 New England Patriots and 2010 Green Bay Packers). After four weeks of play, the Broncos are 1-3 and near the bottom of their division, but the season is far from over.
Denver has played four good football teams this season. Through the first four weeks of play, the Broncos opponents have gone 11-5.
Against the Oakland Raiders in week one, Broncos fans were disgusted to see quarterback Kyle Orton sacked five times and Oakland's Darren McFadden run all over Denver's defense. The game however was no fluke for the Raiders -- who are 2-2 after falling to the New England Patriots on Sunday -- as Oakland's defensive line has played dominantly this year, recording eleven sacks (compared to their opponents two) and McFadden is leading the NFL in rushing.
When the Broncos faced off against the Cincinnati Bengals in week two, Denver got their sole win of the season against a rebuilding Bengals team. Though many fans feel Denver should have blown the Bengals away, Cincinnati is an improving team and rookie quarterback Andy Dalton has been playing extremely well. On Sunday, the Dalton-led Bengals upset the undefeated Buffalo Bills.
When the Broncos traveled to Tennessee to take on the Titans in week three, Denver simply couldn't win the game in the end. The Titans however, are standing at 3-1 atop their division behind quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who is well on his way to having a career season. It's not as if the Broncos lost to a bottom of the barrel team in week three.
On Sunday, the Broncos ran into a Green Bay Packers team that was simply the better football team. Denver was over matched from the get go and they were never expected to pull off a victory on the road in Green Bay. With that said, the Broncos, despite having four of their drives end in turnovers, scored 23 points against the Packers high-ranked defense. Had the Broncos scored 23 points against the Raiders, that game would have gone into overtime. Had the Broncos scored 23 points against the Bengals, they still would have won. The story stays the same against the Titans, Denver would have won if they had scored 23 points.
Granted, everything mentioned above doesn't change the fact that the Broncos are 1-3, but the season is not yet lost. Broncos fans have been spoiled with two World Championships, six Super Bowls appearances, eight AFC Title Games, ten AFC West Titles, seventeen Playoff Berths and twenty-four winning seasons. We can't abandon our team when the going gets tough, the Broncos are going through a rebuilding process, and there is hope for the future.
The Broncos defense will have cornerback Champ Bailey back from injury next week, along with defensive end Elvis Dumervil and linebacker D.J. Williams, who each missed at least two of the team's first three games. Joining the veterans on Denver's defense is rookie linebacker Von Miller, who has looked about as impressive as any rookie defender to come around in a long, long time.
Over the past three games, Miller has consecutively recorded at least one sack and has totaled four through the first four games, which is the most ever recorded by a Broncos rookie through the first four games of a season. Thus far, Miller has recorded sixteen tackles, four sacks, two passes defended and two forced fumbles. Each and every week Miller has improved; he is going to be the cornerstone of this defense for years to come.
On the offensive side of the ball, there are several more young players that have shown great potential. Receiver Eric Decker has been on fire, scoring five touchdowns through the first four weeks of play, which is the first time a Broncos non-running back has done so since Steve Watson in the 1981 season. Thus far, Decker has caught 20 passes for 270 yards and four receiving touchdowns. Decker looks to provide a solid receiving option for the Broncos for many years to come.
The season is still young, Denver still has twelve games left to play. Up next is a home game against the San Diego Chargers. Let's see how the Broncos fair against a division rival this week before giving up on the entire season. Starting 1-4 would be a rough start, but a 2-3 start would not be unacceptable from a rebuilding team that has had a hard schedule.
On a different note, the Broncos announced on Monday that the NFL has approved the team's request to wear its orange jerseys as the primary home jerseys beginning in 2012.

I agree with the article ...
I am full of hope … but after the cool-aid wears off I am scratching my head as how Orton gives us the best changes to win … I completely disagree with that comment from our head office!
Every week I have a list of things I want to see
Reduced penalties
Establish the run
Protect Orton – fewer sacks
Get some take a ways
This week I wanted to see McCoy stretch the field and use Lloyd/Decker to help the running game.
I have not seen all of my wishes granted, but each week I see significant strides taken by this team towards becoming fundimentally sound. Since I see so much progress on a weekly basis, I am inclined to trust the coaching staff to evaluate players and to actually play those that give us the best chance of winning – this week and into the future.
We did the new coach and six wins in a row thing. We are now living with inevitable post party hangover and Fox has been called in to clean up the house. I don’t care if he cleans the kitchen or living room first – so long as they are all cleaned up.

Every week were getting better at these things
People were bit**ing about the onside kick call from GB, but I’m glad they exposed that flaw in our ST. Now they can correct that instead of the Chargers exposing it this weekend

Funny
but that’s actually a good point – better to expose a flaw in the kickoff coverage in a game where we would have lost anyway, rather than lose a close game later in the season by the same flaw. All this assumes the team learns from their mistakes. My biased impression as a fan (and admittedly a complete Bronco homer fan at that) is that they ARE making progress week to week & learning from their mistakes.
Well stated Flunkie - rec'd.
I never did have hopes of winning the SB this season. I had and still have, hopes of continued improvement. I think we are seeing that. The O Line is getting better each week. The front 7 are getting better. I think we will surprise some teams this year and I am pleased with our progress.

I completly agree, to an extent. Yes I see small improvements every week. What bugs me is that all the baby steps we are making with Orton, we are going to have to do-over next year when he is gone.

This is not an offense being built FOR Orton
Fox and Elway have clearly and consitently expressed the “type” of Quarterback they expect to win with. In his Monday presser, Fox emphasised that all four quarterbacks were learning the ‘new’ offense and they spend every available minute practicing and perfecting ‘this’ offense. “This” offense is not McDaniels offense of last year. “This” offense appears to be a collaboration between Mike McCoy and John Fox. “This” offense has 11 primary players and several situtational players – there are route trees, blocking assignments, different protection packages, and lots of keys and reads for each player to learn and become comfortable with. “This” offense requires certain blocking schemes to be coordinated by the 5 or so men that compose the offensive line.
It has been stated close to a million times already, there is nothing extra ordinary about Kyle Orton – he is a journyman quarterback. This would suggest that any other competent Quarterback would be able to everything Orton can do, and do them at least to the same level of competence. Next year, when Orton is bouncing his daughter on his lap on Sunday afternoons while watching his friends play football, there will be some other quarterback running “this” offense. The new quarterback will be playing in an offense that had a full year to learn “this” offense. Most of the faces and numbers will be the same. The new faces will hopefully be substaintual upgrades from the current members they replace – maybe a quarterback that does have something extraordinary. But it will still be “this” offense – which Orton is helping to build knowing that it is not being built for him.

Agree. Still wish we played someone else at QB since I don’t want another QB putting into practice for the first time what his teammates have mastered over a previous season’s worth of real games. Any more QB reps in 2011 Orton steals are lost into the void of pointlessness.
But the rest makes perfect sense.
Kyle Orton makes $8.8MM in 2011 to lead the league in INTs on a 1-3 team with the 22nd ranked scoring offense, 24th in yards per game? In his contract year! Staying such a course isn't rebuilding, it's just lunacy.

How would it feel to be the 1-3 Eagles, who blew a 20 point lead at home to the Niners and Alex Smith? How bout them ‘boys, just blew a 24 point lead also at home to the Lions? Thats something BTW that hasn’t happened since 1992. This was a bad loss, sure, but our offense looked much better (sans Orton) and Von Miller is looking like the real deal more and more daily. I still think we take the Sparklers this week at home if Bailey is back.

Yup, I get a little satisfaction from watching “Dream Teams” fall on their face like Philly this year, or the Miami Heat last year. Although the Heat pulled a 2007 Pats and lost at the Finals, which is actually more awesome

Nope, no short cuts
You have to put in all the work: the draft, smart FA signings, maintaining coaching continuity, and staying true to a program approach. Look at GB as an example of each of these. The results of which speak for themselves. Those results knocked us silly last Sunday.
The right post at the right time.
While I don’t think we will make waves this year, being just one game out of first place can happen this weeked. Denver will come out swinging. The season is on the line and the players and coaches know it.
I was able to go to the game Sunday. First, great atmospher. The fans were mostly cool and the tailgating was professional. When I walked in, the old lady giving out their version of the terrible towells, looked at me in my Bronco finest and said straight faced, “cry into this” and handed me one. Denver had a good number of fans there.
The most common jersey was Elway of course. We set the over under on Tebow jersey’s at 25 and got to that before kickoff. Lots of Champs and Atwaters. What was funny was the 3 Larsen’s, the Elam and the Paxton. Gave out thumbs up and the raised head nods. Biggest balls go to the lady in the Vikings Farve jersey. I asked and recieved her picture with my phone.
A few things I noticed: Von is a freak in person. Him and DJ can fly. Von does need to finish some plays off better, it will bite him someday. I would go to battle with Dawkins any day. While this was a bad matchup for him, he is intense and was communicating with players from the Offense and ST. Decker is big, smooth and has some confidence about him.
Packer fans were chanting for Tebow and it seemed good natured and funny.
All in all, Denver came out with energy and effort. They just ran into a better team with a great QB and our secondary was no match. Rodgers torched us even with Von flying off the edge.
Maybe it’s been brought up already, but the Bronco closest to the ball on the onside kick could have called for a fair catch right?
luckily im a bronco and a blazer fan

No on the fair catch.
You can’t call a fair catch once the ball his hit the ground. The way that kickers do onside kicks, the ball is technically being kicked into the ground to get the high hop, but it has a secondary benefit of precluding a fair catch.

Nice write up and a very good outlook. I hope all those crying doom and gloom will read this and see some light at the end of the tunnel. The focus on QB is crazy. Our team is making strides in fixing the problems of last year. Like others have said, I see things every week that give me hope. I see a football team out there playing a game well enough to win. We won’t win every week, every player is going to make mistakes as well as the coaches.
Thanks for the positive post.

But it’s only been 4 games into a, once again, fresh rebuild, and we didn’t even have the luxury of an offseason. Give Fox at least until midway into next year before you crucify him…. Bill Belichick wouldn’t be faring much better with Orton and this fresh, young squad. Also, give it some time before you claim to know the FO is already done with Tebow…… there are plenty more chances to prove you wrong.

Definitely agree
Here is a breakdown as I see it.
Safety — Bdawk is bad in coverage but great in the run game. Moore is fast and young. He will get better to help cover for Bdawks lack of speed in coverage.
Corner — Getting Champ back in the game will help a lot. Squid & Wilhite are young and are getting better every week.
LB — Mays & Woodyard are playing much better than I thought this year. As last week showed they need to work on their zone coverage but they look great in the run game. DJ is back in full force this week and Miller is our best draft pick sense #7.
DLine — Doom is a monster. The rest of the guys are doing much better against the run than I thought they would, but they need to collapse the pocket a bit more.
OLine — This young unit has showed improvement every week and they got a 100 yard rushing game against the champs plus only one sack. Those guys had a great week and I am excited about them.
TE – Thomas looked great before he got hurt. I am looking forward to him getting back. However, other than Green, these guys really need to work on their blocking. And oh yea, DONT FUMBLE! But overall, I love seeing TE in the offense again. There was no TE production last year.
Reciever — What can you say. Lloyd, Royal, Decker, Willis, Thomas. This is a really good group when they are all on the field. Eddie needs to be better getting off of press coverage though.
RB — McGahee is easily the best FA pickup. Keep hitting those holes baby! Bell looks good and is getting better. Moreno, watch McGahee and learn. Hit the hole, keep your pads low and your legs moving. The biggest issue with KM is he runs too tall. That makes him easy to knock down or get him dancing. Fix that and you will see him blossom (I hope)
drumroll
QB. Say what you want about Orton, based on a previous post by TheManchild about his production in certain situations, he should have one focus area. Improving his 56.8 rating while being behind 1-8 points. You fix that, Kyle and all this goes away. You still might not get that deal, but live will be a lot easier for you while you are still here in Denver. Like I said on other posts, because of his sliding scale contract, Tebow wont play until (unless Orton is injured) 55% of the games have been played.
Coaching — McCoy called a really good game against the Packers. The offense had a lot of scoring chances that they failed to execute, but that is on the players. I think the offensive position coaches are doing a great job. Allan, I love what you have done with our front seven. Why did you take them out of the game last week by not blitzing? We need to fix that and knock Phyllis around this week. Secondary did not seem to know how to handle all the pick routes in zone coverage GB through at them. Thats gotta be fixed.
So, with all of the negative hype and gnashing of teeth I have two things to say.
Firstly, this team is improving and everyone is working hard. Its obvious that they are coming to play and be physical, unlike McHoodie Ball. I understand if media types dont see it because they dont look as deeply as we do. However it bothers me to no end that so few around here seem to recognize it.
Secondly, this is a game we watch and talk about. We enjoy it, we enjoy the community of our fellow fans and we enjoy watching a plan evolve into success story. However, we have no control over anything that happens inside that building and we shouldn’t. Its not our company. If you dont like that fact and you think our actions, words, tears, have any real relevance then I think you are mistaken and causing yourselves misery for no reason. They call it a Spectator Sport for a reason. If you dont like the product, well you have two choices, be patient or dont watch. I know what I will be doing.

Rodgers is playing at such a high level that blitzing him is a guarantee of giving up points
Allen took the risk that we could get pressure by only rushing 4 and dropping 7 into coverage. We got some pressure, but our 7 in coverage were not able to slow their passing game and we weren’t able to generate enough pressure to stop them on 3rd and long (they converted 9 of 13 3rd downs). Had Allen blitzed, I’m sure that our 6 or 5 guys in coverage would not have been able to cover well enough to slow down the Packers passing game.
We were screwed in either situation, but I think that we we less screwed with less blitzing than we would have been with more blitzes.
Win the individual battles at the LOS - all else flows from that.
True
We have seen the same scenario with Manning over the years. Blitz him and he hits the hot read. Drop 7 and let him pick it apart. I do think that, even though you will get burned from time to time, knocking a qb down a lot effects his game over the course of 4 quarters. That is the strategy the Patriots used against Manning over the years with success.
But its true, its a gamble either way when someone is playing that well. Our guys screwed up some coverages but there were several plays that couldn’t have been covered better and he still put the ball in a perfect place. Rogers is a stud.
