VIDEO: Tim Tebow's Hail Mary Attempt And The Pass Interference That Should Have Been

Lost in the chaos that was the final play of the Broncos' 29-24 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday was a blatant pass interference call that, well, wasn't called.  While PI calls are rarely made on Hail Mary plays, a two-handed shove by a Chargers defender on Matthew Willis that forced him to go out of bounds is about as blatant as it gets.

Of course, the video below doesn't show it - it was on the replay from the end-zone angle that I saw it and tweeted about it.  Many of you saw it and agreed.

Here is the play again - it stands alone was one of the craziest plays you will ever see and one that could be an indication of what we can expect the rest of this season.  The Tim Tebow Era of Denver Broncos football has begun.

UPDATED:

Here is the video that shows the blatant push.  Judge for yourself:

Would we get it on the goaline? and if so

is there any doubt Tebow will dive for a TD?

Yeah, game can't end on a penalty

Would have had a first and goal with zero time left on the clock. One play, one chance, second Tebow come from behind victory in Denver.

Yes

Royal_Fan is right, the game cannot end on a defensive penalty, I guess pass interference does entail pushing the wideout out of the end zone while the ball is in play

Love the tenacity that the line AND Moreno showed blocking on that last play! Knoshown hit the D-end three times, falling down and getting back up. Who wants to play for a winner?!

I dont think it was pass interferenece

HOWEVA!!!! there should have been a penalty called for illegal contact. The ball was not in the air when Willis was shoved, but he was shoved beyond 5 yards. so it should be like a 15 yard penalty not a first and goal on the 1. But they DEFINITELY should have gotten one more shot.

by Tony Astorino on Oct 9, 2011 7:31 PM MDT reply actions

It couldn't have been illegal contact as Tebow wasn't in the pocket

Though it seemed pretty clear to me that the ball was already in the air when the push happened and that it should have been pass interference.

BULL

That WAS pass interferance and I think the ball WAS in the air when it happened. He was pushed as the other players were positioning themselves to jump for the ball. You don’t do that when the balls not in the air. Lame non-call. Plus, it is illegal to push a player out of bounds, even if the ball isn’t thrown your way because it elimnates that player from being able to be the first one to make contact with the ball. If Willis had caught it without the ball having touched another player, they’d have thrown a flag.

how much went their way in this game, what about Rivers’ fumble in shotgun that fortuitously bounced to him, that easily could have been our ball in propitious field position

Even before that the call on Haggan

There were a lot of bad calls on Denver tonight! Thanks for posting the proof.

by agentj007 on Oct 9, 2011 7:37 PM MDT reply actions

That call wasn't on Haggan

It was on Raheem Moore, for tapping a wide recieve just further down the field on the back (he barely knocked him down) as the ball fell incomplete. It was a totally lame call. I really don’t like the new way they’re enforcing the “vulnurable player” call. It’s basically eliminated the deep safety from being a big time hitter. Total BS.

Refs < 3 min calls

I only logged on to post about this. Yes, 1st and 10 at the 1 w 1 sec on the clock. This call was easy to make.

My big beef is on the unsportsmanlike conduct call on the Chargers last drive that turned a 48 yard field goal into a 33 yard one.

The Chargers were starting fits in the first quarter and on the Broncos extra point a Charger knocked a Bronco on his back after the play and then threw punches while he was on the ground. Defenseless. No flag. Let boys be boys the refs appeared to say.

I told my buddy wait until later in the game… The boys will be boys rule will change in the last quarter. Sure enough… a ticky tack Bump of chests was called against us.

These two calls were huge.

Obvious PI. Ball was in air. We was robbed. But – we may finally have right qb in game. Not looking for apologies from EFX for the lost season – they don’t have the smarts or the guts to admit how bad they’ve screwed this up.

I beg to differ.

These are two separate examples:
Bills @ Patriots – 1998 (forward to 0:33)
Saints @ Packers – Just THREE weeks ago.

These are both at the end of the game… one is a Hail Mary pass and the other is a pass from the 8 yard line.

The incident on Sunday came on a 30 yard pass… somewhere between both of these examples… not a Hail Mary nor a quick flick into the endzone. If PI is acceptable in both above situations, then PI is acceptable here and SHOULD have been called. End of story.

That being said, I am satisfied in what we came away with on Sunday… I’ll look for improvement going forward.

GO BRONCOS!

Come on, at least it was 'exciting'.

Denver had plenty of chances to take control of the game well before the last play. You can cry over spilled milk, but our boys spent just over three quarters pouring the stuff right down the front of their shirts.

Miami is incredibly beatable for us. If MANY Broncos players, including Tebow, can improve on their decision making, we might have an ‘exciting win’ on our hands.

It is, after all, the point of the game.

First get me some wins. I never drink Kool-Aid on an empty stomach.

I don't mean to always play the devil's advocate in these, but....

didn’t anyone notice Fell’s offensive pass interference on the hail mary play, it was also pretty blatant? I think he just two handed shoved the guy that might have knocked it down otherwise. The biggest BS call was the personal foul on DJ…..I didn’t like the call on Carter’s hit on the defenseless wideout but I think that was probably mostly Carter’s fault.

by drewshap on Oct 10, 2011 6:05 AM MDT reply actions

To those saying that there's no way the call would have been made on the final play of the game...

My question is, if Willis catches the ball, is there equally no way they call him for coming back from out of bounds?

Further, since the (TD) play is automatically reviewed, if Willis is not called for it, could it be called on the review?

My point being, what are the real chances that going out and coming back in is allowed/overlooked if he makes the catch?

by CamboBronco on Oct 10, 2011 10:39 AM MDT reply actions

Who, other than San Diego fans, complained about Hochuli's self-admitted blown call on Sept. 15, 2008, which cost the Chargers that game?

Basically, the calls even out, eventually. However, do you have it on good source that Tebow Time is official? I only ask because I’ve read that Fox still wants to study some on it.

Well, we'll find out tomorrow, I reckon.

Still, I think that quite a few folks here (including me) were expecting Orton to be horse-traded to the Dolphins before that particular palaver broke down, so it’s not like the “Tebow-Time!” carrot hasn’t been dangled out there before. Yes, it’s different this time, but I’m waiting for the official announcement (hopefully, some time tomorrow). I really want you and John Bena to be right. As for me, I don’t want my hopes getting stomped on again, so I’m being cautiously optimistic this time around.

by 9798 on Oct 10, 2011 9:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Was that really a Hail Mary?

“Definition: An offensive play where the quarterback throws the ball up in the air without really targeting any particular receiver, hoping someone on his team catches it.”
Looked to me like he was targeting Willis with a true shot to the end zone. There wasn’t much air under that ball.

by elke on Oct 10, 2011 1:18 PM MDT reply actions

Meh

I agree, illegal contact, but I am sure the Chargers would bring up the fumble call a few years back when we beat the Chargers…I don’t know if Willis gets that call, if that was Lloyd or even Decker, I bet they call it, but the refs seemed like they had orders to make sure the Chargers won. There were some very phantom calls IMO the whole game.

illegal contact

does not exist outside the pocket, on a roll out the QB is considered a runner. the rules are no different than a toss sweep where you can mug a WR

Winning

by Foilhat on Oct 10, 2011 9:37 PM MDT up reply actions

It was actually a very smart play

When a QB is out of the pocket, there is no illegal contact. Not many people know this rule, but if the QB is out of the pocket and the ball hasnt been thrown yet you can push a WR out of bounds. It actually makes him an illegible receiver, and is perfectly legal. Know the rules

That plat is a perfect example of the critics on Tebow

Tebow extends the play but froze with protection..skittish

mark my words.. game plans against him will be to
get him to make mistakes and he will.

the guy is only behind Vick running the ball
and he brings so much by running
its an improvement

but he is going to be akward throwing..
the inaccuracy and the lack of patience

he could grow and fix that..
which is all a part of seeing where he is at
for the rest of the season
