Denver Broncos "A Joke" to Rest of League

KANSAS CITY, MO - NOVEMBER 13: Wide receiver Eric Decker #87 of the Denver Broncos catches a 56-yard touchdown pass against safety Reshard Langford #48 of the Kansas City Chiefs during the second half on November 13, 2011 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Denver defeated Kansas City 17-10. (Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images)

A month ago, this team was 1-4 and what I would consider a laughingstock for the NFL.  All I wanted was a win. I wanted one so bad I'd sell my soul for one. Instead, John Fox sold his soul to Tim Tebow and the result has been three victories in four games.  No longer a laughingstock right? WRONG.

Apparently, the Denver Broncos can win all the football games they want and they'll still be the biggest laughingstock in the NFL. What am I talking about, you ask? I made the unfortunate decision to turn on the radio this morning to Mike & Mike in the Morning just has they started to talk about the Broncos with former Eagles/Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter.

If any of you want to know what the phrase "This team gets no respect" means, look no further because no team - not even the 0-16 Detroit Lions - has been this disrespected by the major media.

Star-divide

So it starts out with one of the Mike's asking Cris what he thinks of the Denver Broncos. Laughter. Followed by a comment about how this franchise is a joke and that any team who loses to them should just blow it up and start over. Yes. Hey Oakland, Hey Kansas City, cut your entire team and redraft because Cris Carter says the Denver Broncos are the worst team in NFL history.

Yeah not so bad, other than a major slap in the face, but he couldn't help himself.  One of the Mike's then asks if he would change his mind about Tebow and the Broncos if they bring down the New York Jets. Laughter. Followed by "not a chance".

So next time you wonder what a disrespected franchise looks like, look at our beloved team. I hope our players heard this and will respond with a thorough ass whooping to the Jets on Thursday. We may not collectively be like Rodney Dangerfield, but our jokes will be funnier.

This isn't even about Tim Tebow anymore. This is a slap in the face to the entire organization and every single player in that locker room. Even John Fox isn't sure Tebow has what it takes, but at least he has the stones to do whatever it takes to win. In that article he stated:

If we were trying to run a regular offense, he'd be screwed.

What he does against conventional teams is rush the passer. Well, we don't have a passer. We have a runner. Not to say he can't pass at all, but we're recognizing his strengths.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but Fox understands how to win football games with what you got. From reading that article he seems about 50/50 on whether Tebow will succeed long term, but for now he can use Tebow to win football games and really who can call a team that is winning football games by running for 200+ yards a game "a joke" without sounding like a complete imbecile? Cris Carter can apparently.

I sure hope the cocky Jets will feel the same way about this team. Anyone who sleeps on these Denver Broncos are going to get run over and run under. And I can live with that. Perceived laughingstock or not...

Go Broncos!

Cris Carter is the one who is a laughingstock.

But he cleverly sets it up so no matter the Broncos do, he’ll be “right”. Because he gets to define the discussion. The best thing to do is ignore blowhards like Mike and Mike and Cris.

But hey, if anyone wants to send a polite, respectful tweet to those guys, they are: @MikeAndMike (http://twitter.com/MikeAndMike) — about Carter’s disrespectful comments. He basically not only criticized Tebow but the whole Broncos organization and even the city of Denver to boot. Way out of line if you ask me. I don’t have a problem with people having concerns about Tebow’s long term abilities or criticizing but Carter’s comments were just patently wrong.

Good, just give this team more fire

Cris Carter, Merrill Hoge all jokers with no rings. I’m still baffled at these analysts that scream that Tebow gets too much attention, yet use gasoline to sustain the fire. To put it succinctly, STFU!

Thursday will be Tebow’s 8th start, let’s see what he’s got.

Exactly.

None of those guys have rings. They were successful players for the most part, but they never won anything. All Tebow seems to do is win. Of course all these guys hate him and want him to fail, though nary a one has the low hangers to say it aloud. Tebow is just an asshole magnet for whatever reason, but the joke is on them.

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT THEY THINK .

If the Broncos keep winning they will all have to eat a large helping of crow . All I know is it sure is nice the Broncos are 4&5 and can be a five hundred team thursday night . I hope the rest of the league keeps thinking that Tebow is the most over rated player in the league and the broncos are a laughing stock all that means is they don’t take a game against Denver seriously until it’s to late and they are about to lose the game . At least that is what I hope for thursday night .

These type of comments don’t even bother me anymore. Somewhere along the way, the Broncos became one of the most disrespected franchises in the league. Winning the division and making the playoffs would be a big f*** you to the rest of the league and the media. And I absolutely love that.

I guess the joke is

that we are winning with this gameplan. Elway and Fox have both said we will pass more when the oppurtunity arises, so I’m not too worried about the league laughing at our offense. I expect a stingy run D from NYJ will have Tebow pass to keep an elite unit honest. The Chiefs/Raiders D’s aren’t bad, but this unit coached by Rex Ryan won’t get beat by what they know is coming.

I expect this is the week to be the week where we do run a lot, but we pass more on 1st and second down then we have.

I disagree

I think this is the game, where we find out how far a one-sided runoriented offense will take you, if you have a running QB. I don’t think we will be testing the Jets secondary a whole lot.

Lost a ton of respect for Carter the player, because of Carter the analyst

His comments yesterday weren’t much better on ESPN. His extremist position will only make him look more stupid when we keep winning. I find it even more humorous that a throwback offensive set (the Alley Oop from 1950’s era 49er teams) is what made his career. It took a coach with courage to change his offense to take advantage of a player’s unique skill-set. No one had run that play in years, now everyone has some version of it. So he should know better. Without that coach (ironically Buddy Ryan), his career was going no where. How quickly they forget.

I’ll be one of the first to hit his twitter account (gotta find out what it is) after we beat the Jets Thursday night. : )

You notice who ISN’T saying anything?

Their opponents. If he even becomes remotely pass efficient (it actually won’t take much), its going to be a big issue for the rest of the league.

There were MANY games in which Vick didn’t have a bunch of pass attempts / completions. Tim hasn’t even started a full year….. give the dude some time to grow with his receivers / tight ends / o-line / running backs……. he will consistently be able to complete 15 to 25 passes a game.

Chris Carter was

a receiver and so he’s biased. A receiver is only going to love a quarterback that throws the ball a lot, preferably to a WR. Until TT starts doing that consistently, Carter will not be a fan. Come to think of it, the current Broncos’ receivers can’t be loving TT too much right now. They get paid bonuses for number of catches, don’t they?

Who cares? Win on Sunday and they will still put us down. If Denver can win a few more games down the road I’m sure we will still hear a bunch of BS from the media. Wild idea here, but let’s just imagine winning the AFC West. We would still be told we were just lucky. I’m happy that Fox knows his team is better off concentrating on tomorrow than pay any attention to the media junk. So GO DENVER!!! Ans wisco’s comment at the top are right on track!

Remember, sex sells.

This team isn’t sexy. The Dallas radio guys here said that today, but they did point out that they watched most of the KC game and said we basically dominated the game. The exact phrase was, “It’s rare that a team is as physical offensively as they are defensively. Old school at its best.”

If we beat the team from NY, where hype is #1, just wait. It will get worse.

At least...

we are winning as a TEAM…and unlike the COlts, who have one guy out who the whole offense is built to be run by, we are winning as a team…and Tebow uplifts everyone on the team…just by his presence…

You could have one superstar like Brady who has a great day and he lifts himself to a 120% effort, where he goes beyond his normal play and has an exceptional game…

Or you could have a Tebow effect who lifts every other player even by 1%, and suddenly you have 21 other players on offense and defens ewho are fighting more heroic than normal…

When was the last time you saw Orton go down to the defense on the sideline and talk inspiration and strategy and give encouragement… If anything the NFL has moved away from TEAM and into superstar worship…well we are getting back to TEAM..it might not look pretty, but a Win is a Win…and a TEAM effort with a win is better to me than the divas winning the game for you…so let em keep laughing all the way to the Broncos WIN SUPERBOWL and dismantle Green Bay with a college offense from the old school days headlines LOL

Two weeks ago, Denver featured the option for Tebow.

Last week they added the triple option on a few plays. Maybe this week they add pass plays into the triple option? I seem to remember Troy Calhoun visiting the Broncos right around the time that Fox was hired (don’t recall if it was before or after, though). So if this wasn’t just a hallucination, could they have been talking about how to introduce the triple option into today’s NFL? No one coaches it better than Calhoun at Air Force, and he does have deep roots with the Broncos, so who knows?

I see a reverse, too

Lots to still open up in this bad-boy. Cross-country (old school for those of you who remember) to the TE, skinny post off-play action, dive/option pass to the slot or outside receiver, etc. The list is long. We’ve only scratched the surface of what we could call out of this approach.

Enough to make a DC’s head swim. And that’s the idea, now isn’t it?!

by shasta77 on Nov 15, 2011 5:11 PM MST up reply actions

It’s entirely possible that the Broncos will get even more creative offensively to counter the Jets’ defensive inventiveness. I expect to see some fairly wild stuff on Thursday. Hopefully it will work!

by thekingofjoy on Nov 15, 2011 6:16 PM MST up reply actions

This is a really good point.

Air Force has often given powerhouse SEC defenses fits with the wishbone. They overcome huge talent discrepancies with misdirection and discipline. In the NFL, where the talent discrepancies are minimal, it could continue to cause defenses problems. Its not like KC or Oakland were surprised, they are just conditioned to overpursue against traditional pro offenses. Everyone says that option football cant work in the NFL, but no one has really went all in and tried it.

Revis’s comments about the Read-Option not working in the long term in the NFL is a widely held stance, echoed by Carter, Mike & Mike and a long list of MSM types. Most current and ex NFL players think that the NFL is too evolved to succumb to the “sophomoric trickery” that is the Read-Option. I think the interesting thing is that, yes these are pro defenses comprised of the best of the best players. However, they are still human beings who have a tenancy to overreact in the face of frustration. All it takes is for the Broncos to have one successful drive in the Read-Option and all the sudden the linebackers are overreacting. As soon as that happens, the Read-Option starts netting big yards. I think this experiment is extremely interesting because beliefs held to be fact by NFL people for decades are being tested in real games for the first time that I can remember. Maybe these defenses prove the beliefs to be true, but I love it when untested beliefs get the spotlight. The Chiefs and the Raiders knew what was coming and they got torched. Their worth as professional defensive players was called into question because the they couldn’t stop what was considered to be below their level. The media types continue to believe that those were fluke games against bad teams. Thursday, the country will see if they are right. I dont think they will be. I am not guaranteeing a win, but you can be sure of this. This Broncos team will knock the Jets in the mouth and show that this is still football. Even if the opponent thinks they are more evolved than their competition.

Cris Carter is a jackass

If you want to know what this is really about watch him on Sundays he’s mad that his wide receiver buddies aren’t getting the Football and that’s it. He argued with Tom Jackson about it, of course Keyshawn Johnson (another former wide receiver) with his infinite wisdom chimed in and backed Carter up, and he was upset that the receivers aren’t getting catches like he knows them all personally. I’m not crazy about the gameplan but we’re winning Football games and that’s what really matters, not the number of catches that idiots WR buddies get.

by RichardBonco on Nov 15, 2011 3:01 PM MST reply actions

I really wish Skip would tone it down

The thing with guys like Chris Carter, the more you let them talk the more ridiculous they are going to sound. There’s no need for a debate. No need for a dialogue. They do just fine digging their own hole. Skip jumps in, and I will give him credit for shouting the things I’m often thinking, and tries to reason with Carter. Skip can’t make Carter look stupid, but give Carter a few more lines and it will become hilarious.

The thing about Tim Tebow is that he is difficult to debate. Maybe impossible. He’s in our heads. We don’t know what to expect, we don’t know how to react, and we don’t always know WTF is going on. Some of us just trust, others just doubt. Only time will tell who was “more right” in the end, but until that time I say let the Carter’s of this world talk and talk and talk.

It’s just more audio for Tebow’s eventual middle finger to the MSM highlight video.

My first comment is what a great link on Fox

My first comment here and I don’t want to sound naive but when did winning by running the football, controlling the clock, getting a lead and unloading on the opponents QB become “a joke”? I know the NFL has changed but does it really matter how you win? Has football become a beauty contest? Did Les Shapiro really say, to paraphrase, that he didn’t sign up for this? Lawdy lawdy but people say some silly things. To me the KC game was beautiful and not just because they won. Did you see those holes? Could you feel the shock of the Chiefs defense? I just about fell out of my chair when they ran their first dive play. I was whooping and laughing the whole time. The running game, college or pro, when executed properly is football at its very best. And, the D knocking the Cassell on his butt all day long just seems like football to me.
And the link was really great Tim. Reading Fox talk about the running game was wonderful. I know everyone is unsure of the future including me but, Fox seemed genuinely excited talking about the running game and the process of teaching it and seeing if they can reinvent the wheel and win with it.
Anyway, normally don’t comment just read but this reaction to running the football has been mighty strange and I felt the need to post.
BTW, I read this site because of posts and links like Lynch’s and because the people commenting on this site are generally a cut above. Yesterday after Moreno’s injury was announced I read the commenters on the DP web site and was sickened by it. I came over here and, for the most part, folks while still being realistic about Knowshon’s production, were truly empathetic and caring in their concern for a nice young man who has just suffered a devastating injury. Thank MHR for your good work and all the readers for your reasoned and kind comments when they are called for as they most certainly were for Moreno yesterday.
Go Broncos!

It might not be pretty

But solid defense and a running game is a winning formula. The Baltimore Ravens rode it to a Superbowl victory not too long ago with the vaunted Trent Dilfer at QB. Pundits and analysts and everyone inbetween scoff at the 2/8 passing stat against the Chefs, yet they fail to mention the role Denver’s defense played in that win. Denver ran on many a third and long when they had no business calling a run. That speaks volumes to the confidence this team has in the defense. Denver was willing to concede a posession because they had confidence that the defense was going to get the ball back for them.

Good luck sustaining that kind of play for the next 7 games.

Yes, the Broncos are a joke. 55 runs and 8 passes? Did we somehow go back in time 70 years? The problem with these kind of situations is how fast teams can adapt to them. So unless Tebow somehow turns into even a 60% passer, you can expect everyone to consider your team a joke. There is a reason teams don’t run 55 times a game any more.

No slogans. Just win!!!

by drgarnett on Nov 15, 2011 3:26 PM MST reply actions

What reason is that?

We were winning. The entire game. We put up over 300 yards of total offense while controlling the football for most of the game.

I don’t get this whole “you can’t win running 55 times a game!” garbage. Sure, if you are running for an average of 1.2 YPC you can’t win running 55 times. I would hope our coaching staff would change things up if that is the case.

But if you are running for an average of 4+ YPC… YOU CAN’T LOSE the game running the football. Simple math bro. If you think we’ll continue with this kind of offense while losing a football game you are simple minded. You believe the hysterics too easily.

But you are correct, if the Broncos are up by two scores you can almost be assured… we are going to jam this football down your throat until you prove to us we can be stopped.

Like you say… no slogans… Just win. With a mantra like that how do you not relate to this kid?

Sustaining… what a joke. You should be asking what new wrinkle are the Broncos going to use to send everyone into a fit of “YOU CANT’ DO THAT!” next week. This offense isn’t about sustaining, it’s about yeah, we just did that to you.

BTW, welcome to MHR.

All Fox has shown me is that we can win despite Tebow. The Jets are the first top 10 defense that he will face, and if they are fooled by this high school stuff I will be very surprised. 25% completion percentages just won’t cut it against good teams.

Okay seems I'm here I'll take a crack at this...

In the long run you may be right. I think that Tebow will have to prove himself as a passer in the NFL. That seems obvious in the long run. But, you have to win now. Read Tim’s link on Fox. The guy is just trying to do whatever it takes. Besides, as I said above, running the football is still essential to winning football games. Ask Elway what he thinks of TD?
Also, until they stop it why stop it? I was a running back in HS, pretty good too. But I always wanted to be the QB but I was short, fast, but short. Coaches liked me and for the hell of it let me play a series at QB. This was the 70’s mind you so; we got to call our own plays. So, I called a reverse. It worked great. So, I called it again. Nobody runs it twice right? Worked again so I called it again. I think you see where this is going. They couldn’t stop it so I kept calling it. We scored and had a lot of fun doing it. Now, would have they stopped it? No it was HS for God’s sake but, in pro football, of course they would have. So, anyway, I figured I’ll just keep running the sucker till they stop it. Never got a chance. Coach looked at me like I was nuts and put me back where I belonged dotting the i in the backfield.
So, what’s my point beyond seemingly senseless babble? Simple, stop the run and they’ll stop running. Then we will see how the team, not just Tebow, but how the team reacts.
BTW I wish Fox had been my coach I could of been the next Flutie before Flutie.
BTW2 kidding just kidding
BTW3 I’ll shut up now.
BTW4 Go Broncos!

by standing bronco on Nov 15, 2011 3:56 PM MST up reply actions

The problem with this thinking is

the Broncos will have the same amount of time to adapt this offense for specific defenses, as those defenses will have to adapt to the Broncos offense. Or did you think the Broncos would just stand pat while the next seven opponents make their adjustments? Such foolishness!

by CompUser on Nov 15, 2011 4:43 PM MST up reply actions

Good luck to the next 7 teams trying to stop it....

Uhmmm…if the Broncos are a joke, then what does that make Oakland and Kansas?? They KNEW Denver was going to run the ball, and even after our #1 and #2 RB’s were knocked out of the game, they STILL couldn’t stop us. And the fact was, when we NEEDED a pass, Tebow came through and delivered. Stop us….if you can.

Bah

I do have my concerns that this gameplan won’t be sustainable and will have major problems against more offensively prolific teams, but it’s working. The Raiders are no slouches and the Chiefs definitely don’t like to lose to the Broncos, either. I think right now, a lot of people’s minds are just blown. I know mine is. People often react negatively to things that turn their viewpoints on their head – in this case, the Broncos’ gameplan in a pass-first NFL – simply because it means they have to re-evaluate their entire perspective. What if the Broncos DO continue succeeding to even some degree with this approach? Everyone – coaches, analysts, players and fans alike – will have to think about the NFL differently. What John Fox is doing is borderline revolutionary in this day and age, and if it continues, it could change the entire league. It’s a troubling thought for people who are paid to be public experts on a subject whose entire fabric may be changing too rapidly for their comprehension.
