RB Willis McGahee Named Denver Broncos Team Captain, Kyle Orton Awarded to Kansas City Chiefs

Kyle Orton #8 hands off his Captainship to Willis McGahee #23 of the Denver Broncos.

The speculation as to who would take over as Captain in light of Kyle Orton's recent release has ended.  RB Willis McGahee has been named captain.  McGahee was elected on the basis of the vote taken before the season started and he received the second-most votes. There will surely be speculation as to what McGahee being voted captain over Tebow means, but in light of the process used it makes sense. McGahee has 707 total yards (rushing and receiving) and 4 touchdowns so far this season.

In other news, Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that former Broncos QB Kyle Orton was awarded off of waivers to the Kansas City Chiefs.  Other teams who submitted claims were Dallas and Chicago.

Denver will see Orton and the Chiefs in the final game of the regular season on January 1st, 2012 at Mile High.

Go Broncos!

Good for McGahee

Not sure about Orton going to the Chiefs but time will tell

Better KC...

…than the Bears. We still have to play them both, but Kyle isn’t going to make the Chiefs much better, they’re awful.

it can easily be argued

… That orton is better than Cassel, so no, that may not be good news.

Stop with the Orton hate folks. He performed relatively well for us through som trying seasons, and was noothing but a PRO. He’s far from terrible, and the way some of you act, you’d think he kicked your puppy or slept with your sister.

Wish him well (except when he plays us), and leave it at that.

I said Orton sticking in KC would be good for the Broncos.

How is that hate? I agree the guy has been a professional. I also have seen that he is not a QB I want starting for my team, and, by extension, that means I’d like him starting for a rival.

by Bradoncadonc on Nov 23, 2011 2:45 PM MST up reply actions   1 recs

It's not really any different.

The player (I’m Josh McDaniels now) was under contract with one team, now the player is under contract with a new team. Whether that came about by trade or waiver claim probably doesn’t make a hill of beans worth of difference. Of course, I don’t really know what I’m talking about either, but that seems pretty reasonable.

by CompUser on Nov 23, 2011 3:58 PM MST up reply actions

By that time, Plummer made tons of money and retired super-comfortably

Orton was only paid high this year. Miss more than half of the year’s pay and create trouble for signing in offseason? He’s simply not made enough money to retire. By NFL standards, anyway

arrowhead pride is pretty funny right now.

When it was reported that orton might not report to KC all of them were just saying that they were better off and didn’t need another crappy QB. 4 hours later, they claim him and they all think he is the next great QB. Pretty funny to read. One guy said his talent alone will get them 3-4 wins in the last 6 games. I’m way to nice to burst that guys insanity bubble he has.

I agree, if if Orton is the answer, someone is asking the wrong question.

by Broncokev on Nov 23, 2011 5:42 PM MST up reply actions

Actually we are pretty split on it.

There are a lot of Chiefs fans who like Cassel and many who just want him to go away. I don’t know if Orton is the answer either but I think he’s better than Cassel. Cassel has just never thrown a very catchable ball. It’s usually high or behind. The plus here is we don’t lose anything by claiming him. We have a ton of room under the cap so we can afford it. Orton is better than Palko and past that we have Stanzi (Who I loved in college) but is still a 5th round rookie. If he works out great then awesome, if he doesn’t then he goes on his merry way next year and we hopefully have a 1st round rookie QB to turn the offense over to. So, not really a downside to us picking him up. The fan base is pretty divided over it though, just as much as we were on whether or not we wanted to run Cassel out of town.

Plus we get to laugh at his neckbeard. Seriously, he is only 29? That beard makes him look 39.

Well

I will not be critical of the Hunt family as if it weren’t for Lamar Hunt, there would be no Denver Broncos, but they are stupid to keep Haley employed. That man has horrendous anger management issues and benefited from a really sucky division last year when we were not good. Guess who our QB was all season, oh yes, Kyle Orton

I wish Orton the best in KC.....but....

With that OLine in KC and their schedule for the remainder of the year (Pitt, Bears, Jets, Pack, VonDoom), it may be a miracle if Kyle finishes the season upright. He might end up severely bruised or in the owners box sitting next to Cassel.

I just moved to Springfield, MO from Pleasant Hill, IA, where he went his entire tenure of pre-college. It’s funny… The creepy guidance counselor from Altoona elementary knew my sons and I are Broncos fans, so he always digs out the elementary yearbooks to show us w/Orton. Dude has a semi for old neckbeard. Another funny story… Place called fireside lounge, has his Bears, and Broncos jerseys framed in there… But they are ANTI Cheifs. Beautiful…

Everyone is mocking Orton now, but EFX will look like fools if he keeps the Broncos from making the playoffs if we’re still in contention in week 17. Although everyone is making him out to be a joke, Orton is a serviceable QB who could very well come into Denver and steal a win. Not to mention, he probably knows this new offense pretty well, so he could provide tips to KC’s defense. Good luck to Kyle. Until week 17, that is.

I am not too happy about this

Not that I am threatened by Orton, but I was looking forward to seeing him play with the Texans or Bears. I think he’s been a class act here and would have liked to see him do well somewhere else in a place that may be able to facilitate him, much like I did Cutler, though for different reasons.

I doubt Orton is very happy about it.

I have a feeling Kyle asked to be released after a call from his buddy Urlacher. But the Bears were behind both KC and Houston on the wire.

why would KC pick him up

I am totally perplexed from this move..

Look at their next few opponents; Pitt, Bears, NYJ, GB, Oak and Broncos.. The best case scenario they go 4-2 (assuming they lose to Pitt and GB).. With SF at 9-1, GB is not going to rest their starter… Anybody think 8-8 wins the division?

Unless they are going to make the playoff this year, this makes no sense.. the other possibility is they feel that Cassel injury is too serious and they want to retain orton for next year.. Would they franchise tag him or sign him to friendly contract?

Orton could potentially get them a couple of wins and thus take them out of the top QBs in next year draft.

Haley and Pioli aren't exactly popular in KC right now

and are on the hot seat (particularly Haley). They wanna and need to win now, not blow and draft a QB. This move makes perfect sense for them.

And now for something completely different

by AlbertaBronc on Nov 23, 2011 3:01 PM MST up reply actions

Kind of

I don’t think we can win now. Our upcoming schedule is the hardest in the league and our offense has been miserable. Everyone’s had injuries but take away anyone’s starting, pro bowl running back, best tight end, and serviceable starting QB and then still have this O-Line and it doesn’t bode well.

I think Pioli isn’t on the hot seat as much as Haley but a lot of people aren’t happy with Pioli right now either. I’m more pissed at Haley not having his team prepared to play every week, playing musical chairs with our offensive coordinators and putting Bill (body double for Weekend at Bernies) Muir in as an OC. Haley has just made some crazy decisions and I think he will be out at the end of the year. Pioli will need to make a good hire and also spend some money in the off-season, resigning our good players and bringing in some free agents or fans will start calling for his head too.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

by Kumar_98 on Nov 23, 2011 3:20 PM MST up reply actions

They have a better chance of getting a comp pick if he plays

Comp picks are based on performance and the contract he signs with another team. If he does well, leaves in FA and signs to be a starter with another team then they will get a comp pick. If he doesn’t play and then signs as a backup, they might not even get a 7th.

And now for something completely different

by AlbertaBronc on Nov 23, 2011 3:24 PM MST up reply actions

If Orton does not report KC has NOT invested anything so they

would not get a compensatory pick. Orton would have to sign.

Bears still play us, but also Raiders and Chiefs, so I was hoping he could maybe win those games and get hammered by us. Chiefs and Raiders do play still, doubt he is able to beat Oaklnad on the Chiefs and the rest of their schedule is tough as nails: Steelers, at Bears, at NYJ, Green Bay, Oakland, and at Denver, I would be surprised if they won any of those games with Orton leading them.

with the team knowledge Orton will bring to Chiefs…

“Obviously he knows it pretty well, so he could probably give away a few things,” Tim Tebow said. “But I think we’ll be OK.”

I can see Todd Haley now, with Orton tied to a chair in a shadowy room under Arrowhead. He scratches his grizzled beard and looks into Kyle’s eyes fiercely and says maniacally, “Now that I’ve claimed you off waivers, you SOB, tell me what you know of the Denver offense…” In a hissing desperate voice he repeats, “Tell me everything!”

No sense of direction?

I think beating the Jets and winning three straight under the new Tebow era has proven we definitely have a sense of direction, and it’s up…as in climbing out of the basement of the AFC WEST and firmly into second place. The Raiders can sense us breathing down their neck…one false move, one mistake, and bam, we have them, and the first place spot in our division and a shot at the playoffs. If Tebow wins even one playoff game…he will have done what veteran Orton could not. Even when we were 6-0 I worried about having Orton as our starter… It’s good to finally part ways with the Neckbeard…he sure handled it all like a true professional….he had his chance and he botched it big time…NOT FOR LONG…(NFL)…

Possible Scenarios

1. Orton doesn’t report to KC, stays healthy and goes into off-season to write his own ticket.

2. Orton reports to KC and plays well, so KC offers him a new contract and trades Cassel to St. Louis where he rejoins McDaniels and schools Bradford.

3. Orton reports to KC and doesn’t play well, Stanzi starts, Orton injures his status in contract negotiations.

4. Orton reports to KC, plays well, but gets injured before week 17, so he never faces Denver

5. Orton reports to KC, plays well, but gets hammered playing against Denver.

6. Orton reports to KC, plays well, but loses to Denver in week 17 because of a Tebow miracle finish and Denver wins the division.

Moral of story is anything can happen and at least the Broncos won’t be facing Orton next week when Chicago comes to town. Week 17 is a long way off and Orton may regret asking for his release. Denver will be fine.

If I can't have high expectations that succeed, I''d rather have high expectations and be disappointed than have low expectations and be resigned to losing.

I'd rather face Orton with the Bears

Bears might be a better team but two weeks isn’t enough to learn an offense and create chemistry with their receivers. If Palmer is any indication, Orton will struggle the 1st couple weeks until he fully learns the offense and gains chemistry with his receivers. Orton isn’t Palmer but I expect relatively similar results.

And now for something completely different

This is Orton's last chance.

He really needs to play well in KC or he will never be a starter again. Dont forget this is still a contract year for him. He has a huge opportunity to make a case for a starting position somewhere in the NFL next year if not in KC. Without this waiver move he was destined to sign a back up deal next year. He has a lot of motivation to play well and if he doesnt he is still in the position he was in yesterday.

I tend to think

He is the safety net. I don’t think there is enough time to get him in. Stanzi starts and Orton goes in if Stanzi is injured. I may very well be wrong but that makes the most sense to me.

Go Broncos!
I believe.... 11-5 till we ain't baby!

There is still plenty of Irony

The trade talks for Cassell iswhat kick started the trade that landed Orton here it Denver in the first place …. should be interesting to see how things shake out in KC LMAO

So now we activate what's his name as number 3?

Gawd our Qb situation sucks.

He attacked everything in life with a mix of extraordinary genius and naive incompetence, and it was often difficult to tell which was which.

Orton is no loss

Quinn and Weber are equally as good/bad

Looking at KC's schedule saddns me

because VonDoom won’t get a chance to pass rush a garden gnome….by the time we play the Chiefs, Orton will have been suckin back his meal through a tube in a hospital for weeks

Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?

Our tentacles are all over the NFL

Cutler with Bears
Shanny, Gaffney, Torrain with Redskins
Kubiak with Texans
Moss with Raiders
Orton with Chiefs
Lloyd, McD with Rams
Marshall with Miami
Hillis with Browns
Scheffler with Lions

I am sure I am missing more…
