The recipe for the Broncos winning five of six is not Tebow, Tebow and more Tebow. It's defense and the running game keeping things close. It's Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil rushing the passer and keeping him uncomfortable, and a reborn Willis McGahee (4.8 yards per carry at age 31) pounding defenses with the changeup ability of Tebow thrown in.

Von Miller is THE BEST defender in the AFC West
I’ve always thought a few things about the NFL were really dumb. The QB rating, the trade deadline in week 6, rookie of the year award and the actual Pro Bowl (horrible idea in a physical sport like football).
So I’m never happy when people talk about Von Miller as a possible rookie of the year candidate since it’s a strange award anyway. Von was the 2nd overall pick, the first defender taken. He was supposed to be good and he is supposed to be the top rookie defender. Cam Newton is no different.
Watching the game last night when he made the game winning tackle on Tolbert (that kick is 4 yards closer and it’s good), I realized Von Miller is THE BEST defender in the AFC West. Please name one defender in the AFC West that is better than Von Miller?
Von Miller is an All Pro (a real honor). He is the single best defensive player in his division. He is THE BEST young pass rusher in the NFL. Why are we comparing him to other rookies. How about we compare him to Clay Matthews and Brain Orsackpo.
Tim Tebow's career record is 5-3. He is the worst 1st round pick EVER! He is an embarrassment to the NFL! Did I say that with enough conviction to get a job with ESPN?
The amazing thing
Is that Von is already better than Clay and Orakpo!
The improvement in run defense from Von is amazing, that last 5 yard tackle for loss in OT set up the Chargers missing the FG and Denver nailing it.

I wouldnt say better than Clay yet

Yeah Clay has been good for a few years
Von has been good for 11 games…

2 ways to look at that..
Von will most likely continue to get much better as he learns and if you compare him now to Clay as a rookie Miller wins hands down. Although Clay was very good.
" I'm blessed to be part of a team with very unselfish players who don't care about statistics, they just care about winning" - Tebow owning Michael Irvin when Irvin asked him "what do you say to your receivers after you throw a ball in the dirt and miss them".
sure I'm just stating
that Clay has shown success sustained through multiple years so that gives him the advantage. Is Andy Dalton a better QB than Carson Palmer because he is having a good rookie of the year? No, he hasn’t proved that yet.
Kendrell Bell (2001), Mike Croel (1991) just to name a few won the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award

The only guy I would say is better than Von is Richard Seymour
The only reason I say that is that from a purely dominating standpoint, Seymour is more dominate at this point in his career, Von I think still has trouble in coverage and can get fooled on some running plays. Seymour’s main problem is attitude, if he had Von’s attitude there would be no question. I think in a year, Von will be making a case as the best defensive player in the league, once he has a full understanding of what teams are trying to do to him, I think he will become a great all around player who can make plays rushing the passer and in coverage.

Champ is still top 5, but I’d have him behind Flowers as far as CBs in the AFC West.
My top 5 defenders in the AFC West would be
1. Von
2. Flowers
3. Champ
4. Seymour
5. Elvis or Shaun Phillips
Eric Berry will replace Seymour on this list shortly.

I hate to say I disagree, but I do disagree – I just hate saying it.
He’s a dirty player, much like Suh – I can’t stand dirty players. These are hitmen, that try to ruin other’s careers. It’s sickening.
When LT left the Chargers and joined the Jets, both teams had a net intelligence gain.
You're looking at one facet
his brilliant pass-rushing ability. He’s coming along rapidly in other areas as well, but was benched as a liability in coverage earlier this year. I don’t think he’s the best yet in terms of his overall game, but he’s rapidly getting there. Newton’s good and so is Dareus, but I think Miller was the best player to come out of the 2011 draft. But you’re right. It’s irrelevant to compare him to other rookies when he’s already become one of the most disruptive linebackers in the league and therefore one of the elite.

I wonder who is out there on other teams practice squads
I’d look at teams like the Ravens, Pittsburgh, etc – who have good defenses with lots of depth.
When LT left the Chargers and joined the Jets, both teams had a net intelligence gain.
It goes without saying that Tebow’s wins are thanks in large part to the Bronco’s D. But speaking for myself and everyone else I know and watch on TV, it wasn’t so obvious the Broncos had a great D back when Orton was turning the ball over all the time. I know about schedule strength and all that, but as an example of teams played once with KO and once with TT:
KO Oak: 3 TOs, 27:25 TOP, 38 rushing yards
KO TT: 0 TOs, 31:51 TOP, 299 rushing yards
SD 1st game (split between the 2): 1 TO (Orton INT): 19:25 TOP, 162 yds rushing (mostly with TT as QB)
SD 2nd game (all TT): 0 TO, 37:08 TOP (of 75 min), 208 yards rushing.
Only an idiot would claim that the Broncos are winning despite Tebow. He may not throw the ball like Aaron Rodgers, but he doesn’t throw like Kyle Orton, either. The fact the team plays ball control offense allows the defense to shine in a way it did not for the first 5 games.

It’s a 100% correlation that McGahee, Ball and Larson find more and larger running lanes precisely because Tebow is the QB AND offers an alternative that freezes defenders.
Maybe we’ll have a hard time signing top-shelf UFA WRs, but we should be a destination of choice for RBs and O-linemen. Defenders as well since our games are shorter (fewer total plays) which means fewer chances to get injured.
Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you.
Ironically, McGahee has 3 100 yard rushing games with Orton as QB and 2 with Tebow as QB.
Really, I think it was just Orton unable to get it done with the game on the line.
I’m ignoring you mainly because your point is a good one.

True, but McGahee also had one game in Week 9 against Oakland with Tebow when he ran for 163 yards in that one game alone,
which was the same game that Tebow ran for 118 yards himself, and then the rest of the team combined for nearly 300 yards, IIRC. I’m not a guy to compile numbers and such, but with this, and the Week 8 game against Detroit, when McGahee didn’t play at all, seems like something else should be factored in or something.
was listening to Bailey on Jim Rome
Champ was saying how he has been going on the field and feels refreshed every time and can’t think of a time when he felt that refreshed every series.
That's my point
there was a time when TOP was a significant stat which was reported every game. In the 90s, the offenses in the NFL got to be more and more pass-happy, and today it’s a forgotten stat. But there are still times and circumstances when it’s important again, and this team is one of those exceptions. The offense isn’t lighting anything up, but it isn’t turning over the ball, and it can generally grind up the clock, which is allowing the defense to rest, which leads to better play on that side of the ball, which leads to more TOP, etc, etc.
Of course the offense can’t succeed like this without a great defense, but who knew the defense was great when they were being run ragged earlier in the year?

This ^
Time of possession only becomes unimportant when you are up 14+ points in a game. I think it is the single most important stat still because defenses wear down. These games are proving that when the game is on the line, not only is Tebow clutch, but the defenses are worn down and loose discipline. When you loose gap discipline it is usually because you are tired and trying to cheat on your gap and gain an advantage. When this happens we see McGahee or Tebow running free late in games. The other thing it does is exactly what GreasyQtip stated. It keeps our defense fresh so they can play with initiative. Our defense didnt get a ton of sack but Rivers was at touched on almost every passing play. It clearly got to him and he was rushing many of his throws because of the pressure. Its hard to bring that kind of pressure when you are worn out mentally and physically the the Chargers D was. When we did pass, Tebow had all day. Those guys were spent. TOP is the goal of this coaching staff and it is still key, even if talking heads have forgotten about it.

Especially when DT probably has like 15 targets on the entire year after coming off a Torn Achilles Tendon…
Cut the guy some slack lots of players don’t even come back from a torn achilles tendon. And then you expect him to come back to a Pro Bowl form in 6 or 7 games in a run first run second run third offense?
DT was a mistake by McDaniels first and foremost. McDaniels used character as some bull shit reason to not draft or acquire good players. Second, DT was a developmental Wide Receiver and we knew it would take a couple years to get him to what could be #1 form, Third the Dude has had huge injuries, Fourth he has over come this injuries to come back to an offense where they mainly run.
I wouldn’t be very excited to come back to a run offense either.
Imagine if you were a Marketer for a company but you didn’t do any marketing, you mainly had to help with accounting. It was an important job and you are helping the company make money, but yet you don’t get to market and do what you do best. Would you be pumped all the time too?

no, I don't expect that
although I do expect him to put some kind of effort in when the ball isn’t going his way.
Granted, he probably won’t make a fat check here in Denver, which means he could be playing for his future elsewhere.
When LT left the Chargers and joined the Jets, both teams had a net intelligence gain.
Is he really not putting any effort into blocking?
Or do some plays call for him to fake routes?
Look I’m not trying to attack you personally, but this generalization that he isn’t putting forth any effort just irritates me. We don’t know what his assignment is on every play. Just because his defender isn’t getting pushed into the ground or isn’t moving back doesn’t mean he isn’t trying. It is very hard to block somebody one on one in space when they know a run is coming. So to say he isn’t trying on most plays is kind of a unfounded generalization to me

from what I have witnessed
after he has run up field, he has had no attempt to block the corner or safety covering him when McGahee or Tebow has gotten down field a bit.
This is just what I’ve seen with my own eyes – a lot of people have commented the same thing – so I’m not in the boat alone seeing this.
Granted, he’s had health issues – but if you’re healthy enough to be on the field, you’ve got to put some effort into things, even those things you don’t care to do, when asked to do them.
When LT left the Chargers and joined the Jets, both teams had a net intelligence gain.
I do want to add tho
that I don’t watch him on every play, but when I do notice him, I’ve always noticed a lack of effort.
Perhaps he gives a lot of effort on other plays though, and perhaps that’s why I don’t notice him as much.
It is a lot easier to see a player “taking a play off” than it is to see someone doing their job all the time, much like Ayers. Do I really ever notice Ayers? No. It’s because he’s not a big name making huge plays, but he does his job, and he does it well enough so that those “Big Names” can make those plays.
It is possible I’m overlooking those things that he does well, much like Ayers – but then again, I don’t see Ayers taking plays off either, or I would point him out as well.
Those are just my $0.02.
When LT left the Chargers and joined the Jets, both teams had a net intelligence gain.

Was just about to explain my comment
But you posted before I could. I totally agree, and was going to add: If it is true that he’s taking plays off, I don’t fully blame him because of the reasons you listed. And that worries me, honestly. I am a huge Tebow supporter, especially around non-Bronco fans, but with Bronco fans I like to be hard on Tebow. I think all the receivers are going to eventually get bored and stop giving their all. Why should they with such a conservative approach. I don’t blame Tebow though, who I think really showed significant improvement last game. But the playcalling is what’s going to make our receivers hate playing for the Broncos. I get that the playcalling is helping our team win, but it also puts a ceiling on our success – a ceiling we need to raise to compete with the better teams.
Hopefully, after an entire offseason, Tebow proves he can throw consistently, and we go forward with a more balanced gameplan.
I just realized
I confused him with Rosario.

Understood
He did have a great catch. And you were probably confusing him with Julius, not Demaryius, Thomas, huh.
A couple of things....first, Chargers...please never get rid of Norv Turner! He
is the best thing we (the Broncos) have going for us when we play you! That dude tightens up worse than the lid on a bottle of super glue when the game is tight in the 4th quarter. Played “not to lose” once again. Thanks Norv. I shudder to think what a good coach would have done with the Dolts over the past 7 years. Second, I am Eddie Royals biggest fan but am beginning to think that Willis is out-playing him right now. Cannot think what ER brings to the offense that Willis might. Right now ER is not catching anything being thrown to him and Willis is catching everything. C’mon ER…. love ya, but you’re better than this.

Eddie Royal hasn’t been a good WR since 2008. He didn’t excel under McJedi, with Orton as QB or Tebow. I don’t think he is “better than this”. He is a great PR and that is about it.
We’ll need to draft WR high in the 2012 draft and we’ll need to focus on someone with better hands and better at beating a nickel DB than Royal. If DT doesn’t get his stuff together, we’ll need to sign a #2 WR in UFA. WR is our biggest weakness on the Broncos right now.
Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you.
That's not true
He is a great PR and a good guy. Which makes him likable and a fan favorite.
He does need to improve on the WR side of things. I almost think he came on too strong and defenses might have started game planning for him.
It is true
It’s his status as a fan favorite that makes Royal’s leash longer than it should be. It’s what makes us tell ourselves lies like “defenses might have started game planning for him”.
Royal was figured out in 2009. Defenses have known how to take him out of the game since that season and have done so successfully most Sundays.
I don’t care if Eddie is a good guy or a punk when it comes to his status on the Broncos. What Eddie is.. is a below average WR that wouldn’t start for most NFL teams. I’ll be shocked if Denver makes anything beyond a half-hearted attempt to resign him to a so-so slot WR contract in the off-season. Nor should Denver. Royal is easily replaceable.

I disagree
If the contract is reasonable, than re-sign him. He helped us win the Oakland and SD games via his punt returns. This is extremely valuable. He is a poor man’s Devin Hester and neither Hester nor Patrick Petersen are coming the Broncos anytime soon.

If that's the case
Then shouldn’t almost every team have a great returner. If league averages 4-5 years per player then their should be 20-25 great punt returners in the league right now.
Eddie is a top 5 punt returner. Get’s much better yardage than Quan Cosby who was already in top 10 in league averages.

it is a mental thing for him. He has demonstrated in the past that he has good hands but he is not making the plays like he has. His return abilities and his ability to run with the ball (partic. in the option offense we are running) make him a keeper I believe, but only if he can get his receiving skills to where they need to be. He is a bit mystifying to me, he is a high character guy who is known to be a hard worker that has some real skills….s/b a recipe for success, but….

1. I thought the conservatism was gonna catch up to us yesterday…almost did (about 3 feet)
2. Our Pass Defense with our pass rush and champ and goodman on the outside is amazing
3. I think the Chargers showed (as did the Raiders) that our rush defense is still skeptical and vulnerable.
4. Why do we call down field shots to our 3rd string running back instead of guys like DT and Decker? Idk matchupz? Still don’t get that even if it is a good matchup
5. Love having Eddie Royal doing punt returns…huge for our special teams…he doesn’t do much on offense anyways might as well use him
6. Sucks for Cassius Vaughn…but we are doing very well on the injury front. Helps out a team a ton when he can have the same OLine everygame
A baseball park is the one place where a man's wife doesn't mind his getting excited over somebody else's curves
Joe Mays was exposed yesterday for the below average player he is. Good hitter with big play capability, but he makes a lot of mistakes. He needs to be replaced in the offseason.
He is not talked about as much because we like him, but Mays is a much bigger liability than Goodman, the DTs or Carter/Dawkins.
Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you.
My take...
Mays – I’d take him as a backup player.
Goodman – I’d take him as a backup player.
Carter – I’m undecided
Dawkins – He’s an asset now, but he’s about done. We need to find a replacement going forward.
We need to draft a running back (31yo with his load is not here for the long term). We need to draft a quarterback (at least for backup/development). And, and and… We’re still rebuilding.

Mays, agreed...good backup and special teams guy. Love those hustle guys. But did you see how many times he
was out of position yesterday and left his gap unattended? Hustle is great if you are going to the right place but it can actually be a detriment that teams will use to their advantage if they know you will not be disciplined with it. I love the way he hits though! MLB cannot be simply a hustle guy though, he’s got to be very disciplined and have high football IQ.
Goodman- I think is a solid starter. I think our def. backfield is doing great now that our front 7 are doing some damage. Shows you how critical a good pass rush is to giving the Dbacks success. He was a blanket yesterday.
Carter- Agreed, but he has shown flashes, I’m hopeful. Same with Rahim Moore.
Dawkins- See Goodman comment. He’s lost a step and w/o pressure up front is a liability at this point in his career if no pressure. But still a great leader/inspirational and still hits like a ton of bricks.

I would actually disagree…MLB position is basically all about instincts and just reacting to the ball. So many MLB’s that get drafted early on play right away in the NFL because its just like college…just react to the ball and play your assingments. Not very often does a MLB have to man cover so they either have a zone assignment or they find the ball carrier.

You ever watch Patrick Willis
He is the “QB” of the Niners defense. Makes all the play calls and ajdustments and does everything from coverage to rushing the passer, so it’s not unheard of for a MLB to make the defensive calls and adjustments. For us DJ Williams does this from the Will.

It calls repeating the plays from the coach…completely overrated job aspect. And all players help make the adjustments when they see different shifts from the defense. The MLB is not the only person to make adjustments.

I’d really say the same for DJ Williams…He was all over the place yesterday but continues to make big mistakes for this defense. I think we really need to surround Von Miller with other stout linebackers. I’d really like to get a stud MLB, CB, and FS in the draft and then address O-Line Depth. generally the quarterback calls the snapcount
Tebow’s still learning. Of course the coach can whisper that into his ear, but I believe they only have a certain amount of time in between plays before their communication gets called off, it’s enough basically to call the play and that’s it.

That is something Tebow has to learn to do
Right now, Tebow just basically is more worried about getting the play and making the read than worrying about the snap count, I think he will talk with the master of the snap count (Elway) this offseason and will be part of his game next season.

They dont have to be experts,
just go out and not actually snap it. If the defense jumps, great! If we jump, or delay of game, big deal.
I think it would be worth a try, especially in situations where they actually consider going for it.

he has good mechanics, and makes smart accurate decisions. He just sucks come game time.
Tebow does nothing to lose games, in fact, he gives his team a chance. He motivates those around him.
Our defense is playing lights out, but they’ve improved since Tebow took the reigns, mostly because our offense chews up the clock, thus they aren’t on the field as long and are more fresh when coming off the bench. Time of Possession is a big factor with our defense.
Thanks for the support though! It’s appreciated!

Just remove the words "Tim Tebow" and replace with "Denver's defense"
And that’s a little closer to what actually happened.
The kid is improving every week, and looked as much like a quarterback as we’ve seen so far yesterday against the Dolts. But let’s not delude ourselves. A stout defense and solid running game is the foundation of a good day for almost any QB.
The upside, for those of you who enjoy Kool-Aid, is that all of this helps slow the game down a bit for Tebow, and helps him develop into a better signal caller. If the Broncos, as a team (sorry, there is more than one man involved here), can continue to improve in this way and play this well consistently over the rest of the season, we may be able to spend the first round of April’s draft focused on something other than a quarterback.
And this would be the best of all worlds for our team. But let’s let the season play out before we start making proclamations about the next ten years.
Why everyone is in such a damn rush to name Tebow a Savior or a Sucker is beyond me. It’s gonna play out how it’s gonna play out, and the Broncos still have a lot of work to do.
As a team.
Tim Tebow, Tim Tebow Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow, Tim Tebow. Furthermore, Tim Tebow. Also, Tim Tebow. In conclusion, Tim Tebow. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go Tim Tebow my Tim Tebow. Everybody have a Tim Tebow Tebow, Tebow!

Every team needs a leader, it's obvious to me that the whole team is playing better
since Tebow became the starter. Not hard to understand, you get a guy with his natural leadership skills and enthusiasm, energy and will power and it becomes contagious. That’s why guys like Rod Smith are so critical, coaches understand this principle and love to have these guys on the team. It’s an added bonus when he’s the QB. You would think because they are all pros and skilled, competitive athletes at the highest level this principle would not apply but obviously it does. They still need/want a leader to inspire them.

Did you watch the Bears game Mastermind?
If running game and defense made QBs play well, then Hanie and the Bears would have beaten Oakland yesterday. Instead Hanie threw three picks and lost to Oakland. Tebow deserves all the credit he gets (and then some) for not turning the ball over and for making plays when they are needed.
