McCarthy, Mohamed Signed to Denver 53 Man Roster, Vaughn to IR

Denver Broncos safety Kyle McCarthy and rookie linebacker Mike Mohamed have been signed from the teams practice squad to complete the 53 man roster.

The Broncos had been sitting at 52 men on their active roster since quarterback Kyle Orton was waived by the team last week. Mohamed was activated after cornerback Cassius Vaughn was placed on injured reserve with a broken fibula.

The moves will allow Denver to sign two more members to their practice squad.

McCarthy was a preseason standout in 2011 and played in eight games for Denver in 2010 accounting for four tackles. McCarthy played college ball for Notre Dame and was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

Mohamed was drafted by the Broncos in the sixth round of the 2011 draft out of California.

Both players will likely contribute very well to special teams.

Thank you for all the support throughout the last year! Just got signed back to the active roster. Excited for things to come! #Broncos

McCarthy

I thought he deserved a spot back in Training Camp.

I don’t know how we are going to do with 4 CB’s and 5 Safeties. We are going to need Wilhite to step up big time.

Darn, too bad about Vaughan.

Glad we have some solid talent on the practice squad this year though.

...and this is why

I want Tebow to succeed.

Not because I am infatuated with him. Not because I have a belly full of Kool-Aid. Not because I think he’s a better QB than he is just because he won a Heisman. And not even because the Broncos have won several games in a row with smoke and mirrors, good defense and solid running.

But because the Broncos need to have another solid draft in April. We can NOT afford to have to spend the first round looking for another QB. We need to draft one, but we have pressing needs on defense that cry our for first round talent. The successful development of Tim Tebow would free us to do that.

One man is not more important than the team. We need depth all over the roster, but particularly on defense. This is the most important reason we need Tebow’s game to come together.

Give me more incremental improvement like what we saw Sunday and I’ll feel a lot better about that.

Tim Tebow, Tim Tebow Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow, Tim Tebow. Furthermore, Tim Tebow. Also, Tim Tebow. In conclusion, Tim Tebow. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go Tim Tebow my Tim Tebow. Everybody have a Tim Tebow Tebow, Tebow!

Haven't heard a thing...

I wonder if there is a lingering injury or some other issue with him. He barely played in 2 seasons, so there can’t be enough tape for someone to think he has no business on a football field. How is a top 50 pick from 3 drafts ago nowhere to be found? Not even on our PS? There has to be something going on that we don’t know about.

He worked out with the Patriots on Nov. 11 but wasn't signed

Speaking of Practice Squads

Is anyone else surprised that they haven’t brought Adam Weber up from the Practice Squad? Given the number of fallen QBs around the league (e.g., Houston), it seems risky to leave him there instead of leaving somebody like Mike Mohamed.

by bill2975 on Nov 28, 2011 5:07 PM MST reply actions

nah at this point there's not enough tape on him

Most teams will go with their own PS guys or go after a the mcown’s\feeleys of the world.

I doubt any team would trust a PS rookie to learn a new offense and be ready to step in.

by trumanj on Nov 28, 2011 5:23 PM MST up reply actions

Bill, my take on it

If the Broncos were to activate Weber and then for whatever reason they needed the spot, they’d have to waive him. He would then be at the top of the list for NFL personnel to take a second or third look at him and Denver would likely lose him.

That’s just my opinion though, I could be wrong (I was once). It is not that out of the ordinary for an NFL team to only carry two quarterbacks.

Brad

nice well written opinions and thoughts. I agree on all accounts with the exception of the Jeremiah Johnson call. That one I did agree with the refs, and was hoping it wouldn’t get reviewed as I thought he was a foot short initially, and was hoping they’d get a play off before review.

The shove on Decker should have been called – he was 4 feet away from the official. The hit on Tebow was a bit too much – he was stepping out of bounce and got plastered.

The holding call on Walton – yeah, there was a tiny bit of holding, but that was a very very iffy call. The lack of call on Tebow’s facemask was disgusting. It seemed as if the officials were working against the Broncos, and it was sad to watch. It wasn’t quite disgusting, but it was an extreme shame.

Q. Why doesn't St. Paul have a professional football team?
A. Because then Minneapolis would want one!

I didn't mention

that Tommie Harris punched Orlando Franklin in the face, it was a sissy punch, more like a slap, but nothing got called

Uh, how about when Cam Thomas tackled Tebow the runner and came up with his hand in his face mask?

Ref was right there and a non-call. It left a scratch on Tebow’s right cheek that he sports today. Tebow jumped up and give him a look that only had kill in it…I bet that hurt Tim pretty good but he is so danged tough he just shrugged it off…

yeah

Tim wasn’t happy about the lack of no call there – don’t blame him either!

I meant to

put those in (they were on my reference sheet) but I had lots to do at work today so I didn’t write it as extensively as I should have. Thanks for the feedback though!

Thanks Brad for the site...

I have to disagree (wow I didn’t think I would ever say that about the refs) on a couple of non-calls. Tebow on the running play was still inbounds when contact was made, the camera angles made it look like the hit was out…Well, maybe not a couple of them, but Jerimiah’s elbow hit the turg with the ball a 1/2 yard short of the first down. At first glance I thought he had it, but after the review I could see they were going to over turn it. JD Walton’s hold was balogna fromthe get and I thought for sure the refs were trying to take the Broncos out of the game. Shame on them for that because it stopped the momentum for the moment…I really liked the Jets game refs, I don’t think there was a holding call all game…

by bfree2bronc on Nov 28, 2011 6:34 PM MST up reply actions

on the hit on Tebow in bounce

he was running out of bounce, he was a foot away from stepping out of bounce. It wasn’t that he was hit, in my opinion it was unnecessary, he could have just as been easily shoved with the same result. It would have been a flag 90% of the time in any other game, any other team.

I agree with you on the Jets Refs – I liked them. They were fair and just. They didn’t miss big calls and didn’t call ones that were iffy.

Chalk it up to the joys of a running quarterback

This is the same thing that Vick and others have had to live through. Refs don’t treat quarterbacks that can use their legs the same. Anyone have any doubt that if someone hit Aaron Rogers or Tom Brady like that that the call would be made 100 percent of the time and all we’d hear about on the MSM today would be about how awful the defender was to take a shot like that?

Development

I really like the way this coaching staff is developing players and utilizing the practice squad. In years past it seems as though when guys went to the practice squad we never saw them again. If PS guys feel like they will get a shot then they will work a lot harder and that makes everyone better.
