Beat the Raiders? All is forgiven…

What a rough ride it has been for Bronco fans the last few years…a ride that begins and ends at the doorstep of the Oakland Raiders…I have no idea if the road will smooth out in the (near) future or perhaps it will become even worse before it improves, but I do know one measure of the path we are taking comes this Sunday…as always it involves the Raiders.

Sure, Mike Shanahan was shown the door after a late season collapse that cost the Broncos a playoff experience, and his dismissal seemed to mark the beginning of this recent turmoil…but I think it started earlier than that…for many years Shanahan had a certain mastery over the Raiders.  His contempt of Al Davis gave him extra incentive, but it was the results, winning far more often than he lost, that truly sealed his fate as the most beloved Bronco coach…sure there were two Super Bowl wins, but along the way, he managed to take care of business against the Raiders, even stooping to their level when needed (did he not invent the “ice the kicker” timeout as the ball was snapped right before our eyes?).

However, that dominance began to fade, and on November 23rd of 2008, the Raiders came to Invesco (or Mile High, or Sports Authority…or whatever) and beat the Broncos pretty badly, 31-10, and thus began the demise of Shanahan in Denver.  The loss was a blow to the Broncos playoff hopes, and it surely ruffled the feathers in the owner’s box….nothing is worse than losing to the Raiders.

Fast forward to the McDaniel’s era…despite his successes (remarkably few after his 6-0 start!)….is it any wonder that he was terminated following the absolute beat down the Raiders handed to the Broncos last season…at home?  Though there were other factors in the decision, I daresay that was the moment where he became the “former” coach of the Broncos.  It simply took a few weeks for the message to be delivered…

That brings us to…this weekend.  We have a struggling quarterback, in fact an entire team that has not found its way.  A coach who has won just 4 games over the past two seasons, and who seems to be saddled with players he does not want…and everyone on the team has the chance to turn down the heat which seems to be under their seats…THEY CAN BEAT THE RAIDERS…imagine how much better next week will be if they post a “W” this weekend…all the hand wringing , the questioning of the play calling, and whether the offense is  tailored to the personnel…maybe even Merrill Hoge will shut up (wishful thinking, most likely)…think of it…3 seasons ago, the Raiders came into our house and delivered a blow to our playoff hopes and sent us reeling…it is time to dust off and return the favor…we walk into their house with nothing to lose and everything to gain…take a bite out of their playoff hopes and set the Broncos back on the proper course…to coin a phrase…’just win’…and don’t be a baby…
