An update on the DTs we passed this year
It's a common sense that for this past offseason our major need was at the defensive tackle position. I knew it, you knew it, all the fanbase knew it and for sure our front-office knew it. They surprised us all a lot with a different and smart strategy, letting the other franchises battle for the deep DT class while we filled some big needs with some top-borders of other positions.
Then, in the free agency market, we made some moves and passed on others. So we are now in the mid-season and I think it could be nice to see the big scenario on how all those DTs were playing so far. We know that the stats don't tell the whole story, but it's some measures for us to compare.

After taking a look on that, I can draw a few thoughts:
1. Confirming what I expected to see, Bunkley is indeed our best defensive tackle.
2. The ex-Big Vick kid disappointed me arriving the training camp much lighter. For a moment I thought it could be an advantage, as he could be quicker and get to the backfield more often, but I was wrong. He is not producing well.
3. Marcus Thomas and Ryan McBean are having their job accomplished very well. Glad to see it!
4. Marcell Dareus is really a beast and would make a huge impact on our line, but we needed much more to improve our pass rushing and Von Miller is the real deal.
5. Many of us (me included) wanted to pick Paea and Austin with our two 2nd round picks. Point to our front-office who didn't do it and used our both picks much better.
6. Mebane is proving with numbers that he was the best DT available at the free agency market. However, he wanted to stay in Seattle and there was nothing we could have done to land him in Denver.
7. I was pissed with our front-office for don't even trying to sign Cofield, but now he is showing only a good player, just like ours.
8. I really wanted to see Cullen Jenkins wearing Orange & Blue. I didn't want to take a risk on the injury prone Ty Warren in favor of overpaying to Jenkins. I was right that he would have done a great job here, as he is doing for the Eagles.
9. Soliai didn't worth the money he is receiving in Miami, but does he worth a smaller contract next season to play for us? I say yes, but I don't think he would accept it.
10. Should we give a shot to Mr. Fat Haynesworth? Absolutely not!
As we can see, our front-office made a great job handling our lack of talent at this position. I grade it as an A, or ate least B+. For the next season, I think we'll draft 1DT early (likely on the 2nd round) and we can develop this line to a really promising future. And you dudes, what do you think about all these stats? Any other thoughts to add? Did I forget any name? Do you agree with my grade to this our front-office at this position?

I’m not sure you were really clear. Maybe he just doesn’t like the Patriots defense and would fit better with Fox and Allen’s system.

He is a trouble-maker who would just disturb our locker room enviroment.
We are thin, yes… But Thomas and McBean are holding the trenches very well, while Bunkley is our current best DT. I expect a bit more of big Vick, so disappointed of his loss of weight and step back at the position…

Haynesworth hated Washington's defense
He said so early and often. He signed the big contract expecting to play in a 4-3 defense. When they converted to a 3-4, he balked big time. Frankly, I don’t think he is in shape and probably won’t be able to handle the altitude to play in Denver. I’m just saying I wouldn’t dismiss him so quickly. Can’t say I like him, but he may show up on a defense somewhere and return to his Tennessee form, maybe in Detroit, like they need yet another monster on defense. Then we will all wonder and wait for your next update.

Denver can’t afford the risk on him. But how would you like to see him playing for a team in the AFC West that’s not the Broncos and be super motivated? At some point, he’s got to be thinking about his next contract. Frankly, I think he wants to rejoin his former Tennessee defensive coordinator, who now is coaching Detroit.

but it still needs some top end talent added to it…… some raw athletes if nothing else. I love Bunk as a starter…… I love McBean as a rotational DT (am I really saying that?)……. Marcus Thomas, once he has more time to learn/practice our defense without a nagging injury, could be a good starter as well…… but more talent is needed. You can’t ever have enough young talent on a defensive tackle rotation…. just ask Buffalo.

Mebane was staying in Seattle and there was little chance we'd nab him...
I was hoping the genius kid, Okoye who went to Chicago on a one year contract. He is very strong, smart and young still developing.

i think we need to think about signing Bunkley and Thomas. If i’m not mistaken they are both FA after the season
Bunkley is in the final year of the six year deal he signed with the Eagles after being drafted in the first round.
Win the individual battles at the LOS - all else flows from that.

the man is a beast. i watched the bills-jets game, and he was really disruptive. on one play, he took a double-team inside and pushed the pocket right into sanchez, who rushed a duck throw into a bills defender, that was somehow not ruled a pick.
i am a firm believer in inside pressure, and run-stopping ability. i am sick of losing the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball most games, and trying to scheme a win out of it. we need a stud dt and a rt who can pass block and maybe we can win the line of scrimmage more often. we should draft a dt with our first pick, we are set at qb.
that same jets team is going to run the ball down our throats, and not abandon it, i’m afraid. the FO is getting lucky, as i’m seeing too many easy runs against this line. luckily, we have the run blitz and schemes to counter, for now. bunkley and thomas are good, mcbean is shocking me, but we need a serious force inside to be a contender in the future.

The trenches
Any team wishing to win some games must win the battle in the trenches, You are absolutely right. I’d like to have a top-tier DT, and Dareus would make a huge impact here since day 1 (proving wrong who said pior to the draft that he would need 1 or 2 years to reach a high level)… We would be great with him, but I’m happy with Von Miller as the #2 and I think we made a great pick there selecting him instead of Dareus.
Cullen Jenkins is another beast, and a player we could have signed… This really bores me, as I wouldn’t have care about overpaying 2M to him and don’t signing Ty Warren. However, if Warren wasn’t injury prone and could have keep healthy, he would add some good talent here.
I just disagree about the luck stuff. I don’t know how much the luck factor can influence a game. I think the scheme is helping here, and a bit of luck is never too much. I think our FO will add a young talented player on the draft, likely on the 2nd round, and we have a promising DL for the incoming years…

He missed a lot last year due to a knee injury. That very much factors in. He’s been fortunate to have seemed to move on from it, but its not like he was injury free either

2012 is not the year of the DT. Maybe three to four could be evaluated as 1st’s. Ta’amu, Chapman, Thompson. No real stud.
Impression is that John wants to take a run at Andrew Luck, the lock of the draft. If not then some one in the 2nd. Maybe Tannnhill.

I've been watching just about every college game I can this year and haven't seen the excitement for a DT like we did last year...
I don’t know if EFX will go after a DT in the first rd, maybe wait until the 2nd-3rd…I really like Claiborne CB out of LSU and RB Trent Richardson. Those two guys are the real deal.

I'm watching all the college I can, like bfree...
…and I agree about this new DT class weakness.
However, this is the first year that college football is broadcast in Brazil, since I never had the espn hd channel before. I’ll try to look at a Memphis game to see him. One point is that I watched Jerel Worthy and I didn’t see any greatness on him… that concerned me, as he is mocked as one of the bests DTs of the next draft.

Memphis being a small college doesn't get the exposure the bigger colleges do though...
There are one or 2 4 star DTs and then it falls off the map to the 3rd-4th rd…

I watched the likely preview of the BCS last saturday, LSU vs ’Bama…. and the 2 running oriented offenses were held during the entire game for no TDs. However, any of those DTs got much attention to be a 1st round imo.

I like Richardson a lot
but anyone who watched the LSU game knows his offensive line should get most of the credit. Running backs only have a 3-4 year shelf life; I don’t like spending a top fifteen pick on a player who may not have that big of an impact long term.

There is a Julius Peppers type of DE in the draft (Coples NCU) and we all know how Fox loves him some DEs especially when their 6’7 285 and run in 4.60’s or better…

Richardson is probably the 4th or 5th best prospect in this year’s draft. But it would still make me a little sick passing on Morris Claiborne, Dre Kirkpatrick, or Vontaze Burfict when they could really help our defense.

a late pick, ok, but still a 1st round. As Trent is miles ahead better than DeAngello, I guess we pull the trigger at this spot too.
I tend to wish for a dominant D, but to succeed with Tebow we need to build the offense around him. And a great RB is essential. Richardson has a big fit in Denver…

His defense at the time was ranked a little higher than ours though if I remember correctly.
I would imagine Elway will be strongly pushing for a CB in the 1st round.
He did say that QB, DE, LT and CB are the difference making positions and I imagine fixing our secondary will be priority as we are ranked in the bottom half of the 20’s in pass defense.

I have watched every game Burfict has played the last two years and he is tremendously overrated. Maybe worth a 4th or 5th round pick. Has no natural instincts for the game and emotionally is a real loser.
And I am closer to agreeing with BroncoMath than not.
I could accept taking him in the 3rd, but no earlier, imo. Same areas of concern, tho’ less strongly stated.

No, we have other needs. But occasionally a few have dropped.
One more off-filed incident, aned Burfect might drop,. I am not sold on him enough to make me not take a CB, a really good MLB (if one becomes apparent), Trent, a good OL prospect, etc.

The biggest losses for me were Jenkins and Okoye. Okoye would have come cheap and Jenkins would have cost us.
That said. I like Bunkley and Thomas a lot. McBean has really surprised but I still am not a fan. I don’t know that Warren will ever be fully healthy for us.
We need to either bring in another good DT next offseason or draft one IMO.

Jenkins would fit our DLine veeeery well. The good news about Okoye is that he signed a 1 year contract with the Bears… however if now we want to make a move on him, he will cost much more than for the Bears last offseason. He is showing a great level, so his value arised. That is the bad news.

We’re still getting gashed for 8 and 9 yards on first and second down runs. DT is a major weakness.

Our D is currently ranked 8th in YPC allowed at 3.9. The NFL average is 4.3 YPC this year
the 2010 Broncos D gave up 4.7 YPC (second worst in the league). DT is not a major weakness.
This year’s D is 15th in rushing yards allowed at the midpoint. So with a low average but a high total, you can see that the Broncos D has given up some big runs (47, 36, 22, 21) but has also done a much better job this year at balancing that by stopping many runs for 2 or fewer yards including twice as many TFLs this year relative to last year (thank you Bunkley).

As DEBF pointed,
we improved a lot at this position and we are accomplishing the stuffs very well.
However I agree DT is still a need and we should draft 1 good prospect or signing a good name during the offseason. THis year we handled it very well, we just need to keep upgrading it.

at the beginning of the season I would have said that DT is no doubt our biggest need. I think our line is serviceable right now, and I think if we had a MLB’er that was worth two shits it would greatly improve those numbers.
I think our biggest needs heading into 2012 are MLB, CB, RT, QB, RB in that order.

I’m very anxious to know how Nate Irving is developing. I expect a lot of him, he is very physical and can be our long-term mike, since Joe Mays varies beetwen good games and where-was-joe-mays games. However, Goodman now is showing he is not a good CB anymore, Cassius and Wilhite gets burned several times and will need time… so this is our major need imo. Thinking about them all, I could say in this order: CB, DT, MLB, SLB, RT, RB, QB.

I don't think they have but he hasn't beat out Mays yet. He'll get the shot to earn the job next year but they will bring in competiton either from the draft or from FA.

After doing some research early this morning, the idea came to me that EFX saw this draft coming and the reason why three LBers last year…

Nate is still in progress… Von Miller is the real deal but is in progress to learn better the ‘read and react’ and to drop into cover… and Mohamed did make the team, but was on the bubble and is not on the roster, but in the PS.
So it’s unlikely they look for another mike in the draft, but it can happen.

I'm not sure where your reading that Bill
but last year’s MLB class was considered very weak with the best MLB (Nate Irving) being drafted in the third.
I expect 3 MLB’ers drafted in the first round this year. Burfict, Te’o, and Kuechly.
If Nate Irving can’t get on the field over Joe Mays even as a rookie, I don’t want him.

My god have you watched him play an entire game. He can be directly blamed for at least

Where do you get all the stats from? I think that the first year job by our front office wasn’t to bad for a new group of guys. I can’t wait to see how they do next year. I’m not one who looks ahead that much, but I’m interested to see how the year plays out and what they decide to do based upon that.

Yea, it's a fatal personality flaw of mine.
I’m ALWAYS into player evaluation and development with nothing more pleasurable than seeing a coach taking someone else’s throwaway and turning him into a real player. I like this year’s draft picks a great deal and really look forward to seeing what we come up with next.
However, there is still a ton of evaluation left for this year’s players.

And nowadays the best way to see it, is watching a scared junior to become a great senior prospect. The NFL more and more want ready players… so we need to watch NCAA to see those aspects.

I’m not different, I love the SOCIEDADE ESPORTIVA PALMEIRAS… However, I’m “the weird guy” because althought a few friends here like NFL and support an NFL team, I’m the one who besides being a Bronco fan, I love the Broncos much more than any soccer team LOL.
None of my friends understand it… and actually, neither do I. I don’t think I can explain it LOL.

I remember when I was a kid I hated American football and didnt know why people watched it so much.
It was always on and sometimes I would just leave it on. After one game (Patriots vs. Cowboys) I all of a sudden really liked football. It was weird but I have loved it ever since. My parents all played/ liked soccer to so it was weird for them and they never understood it. Now all the kids in my family like football though hahaha…its a great sport.
Soccer is a great game too
But year after year it is losing it’s bright for me… IDK why, and I don’t think I can do anything about it. On the other hand, the weird brazilian here is watching the NFL since ’97 and it was ever the best game imo.
What’s your soccer team Shyand? Reading to you I remember when I was a kid and I hated when my father invited his friends and made his barbecues… and after my first barbecue, when I was a teenager probably, I realized how great is to eat some meat and have a beer. ahahaha… just memories, thank you for the moment.
Btw, in ‘97 I watched one game or another… In ’98 I missed just a couple games and the one that made me love the Broncos that much was the loss to the Dolphins in the end of the season, when Dan Marino missed only to make rain on that game. Since there, I can’t avoid following the Broncos, much more than the Palmeiras….

I SV werder Bremen. I havent kept up with them lately since its very hard to watch soccer here in the states and football takes most of my time. The world cup is when i get to watch the most soccer and I like the french team (go Zidane!).
97’ and 98’ were great years I remember those Elway vs Marino battles. I think one time the score was like 30-3 and we really beat them bad I was so happy.
I don't like the France too much, you know... and Zidane even less =P

We have injured DL too!
I would say the DL is doing quite well, considering Vickerson and Warren are on IR.
We never really got to see what Warren could do in this D.
Looking forward to next year, if we re-sign Thomas and Bunkley, I think we are pretty well set for a little while. We should still draft a new DL, but could afford to have that be in the 3rd round or later.
I have no doubt about the quality of Ty Warren
I hate the “what if” game, but what if he had played the season opener against the Raiders? Unfortunately we all knew he was a risk…. =\
Big Vick we didn’t expect to go to IR list, but he was disappointing (at least me) while he was on the field… I expected much more from him.
I could live with a 4th or later drafted DT and a decent FA…. Or also with a 2nd rounder added to this same unit without any more moves.

Today’s NFL 285 on the interior line just isn’t gonna cut it. I believe he would have been more effective had he stayed at 321. Just make it tough for people to go around, even if he didnt penetrate

Was the 7th best 4-3 DT in the entire league. He is a wonderful run stuffer.
2. I couldnt really see much from Vick since he got hurt pretty early and is on IR. I will say his biggest strength was his power. Maybe the losing all that weight effected his power.
3. Thomas is a beast in this system as expected and McBean is a pleasant surprise. This is what good coaching can do for you. McBean used to suck in the old system.
4-7. Agree
8. Cullen Jenkins would be great because we could always use his type of pass rushing ability on the D-line. He gets to the QB in a different way than Miller or Doom, much more like Trevor Pryce.

You had an insight that time that I didn’t… We must credit our front-office for that move. He and McG were great adds. The best part is that Bunkley is helping on the passing downs, collapsing the pocket. He doesn’t need really to rush the passer… he is much useful on his way! I really like the kid.

McBean pleasantly suprising
Since he seemed trending down after last year. (Ex-)Big-Vick didn’t get enough time for us to know.
3-1 tackles in 5 games are not very good numbers
But of course he could have had a good season with he wasn’t injured. I just doubt it was going to happen. I hope he can gain some weight back and have more power to play 1-tech next season.
