Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Urlacher's comments about Tebow.

This link shows a story that's been getting discussed on a lot of major sites that cover the NFL (ESPN, nfl.com, SI, etc.). It claims that Brian Urlacher calls Tebow a runningback, and that he plays well for the Broncos.

Naturally, our first thought as Broncos fans is that this is a slap in the face. How dare he? Especially after losing to Tebow's heroics, and his arm (not legs), how is he going to go out and make a statement like that?

Star-divide

One thing to consider is the source. Urlacher is a HOFer, and one of the best LBs to ever play the game. He's intelligent, and gives credit where it's due. Why would he go out and make a statement like that when he just got beat by Tebow's Brees/Brady/Rodgers impression?

I don't know if any of you actually heard the post-game interview with Urlacher. His exact words were: "He's a good runningback. He throws the ball well. He does a good job for them."

The trend, as I'm sure you'll see on all of the sites addressing this storyline, is that nowhere is the second statement of Urlacher's interview shown or discussed. They're pulling the statements out of context and *creating* controversy. And we're buying like it's Black Friday.

I think what Urlacher says is VALID. That's right. Bring the flame, but I think he makes an accurate assessment of Tim Tebow. The man is built like a runningback, runs better than most runningbacks, and can effectively throw the ball. I have no problem calling him an RB that throws well. I'll even take it as a compliment. How do you stop an RB that can zip it 50+ yards? How do you even plan for someone that dynamic?

What are your thoughts?

Urlacher was just buttsore

He and the other Bears who made disparaging comments after the game are just being sore losers (although I’m not sure how much you can blame them after the way they lost). Tebow won this game as a quarterback. Sure, his legs helped open up receivers — especially on the touchdown pass — but it was his arm that won it for us on Sunday. The only way his comment can be taken as accurate is by looking at the stats, which say he was our leading running back. But that ignores the game. Not one of those rushes led to points. Our points came off of drives where we aired the ball out, and the touchdown was when Tebow went 7 for 7. He’s a quarterback who can run like a fullback. It’s not the other way around.

None of us go out and play for stats. You just do whatever you can to help the team out. -- Eddie Royal

Hows the finals going you done yet? Aced them I bet;)

Haha your gf will come through! Cruises are awesome, and you can eat everything!! 24 hours a day! I will recommend carnival cruise lines…they have awesome FREE room service too!
My hubby and I went on this one for our one year anniversary, his bday is in march, I was thinking about booking another short one lol..and yeah, when they kicked that game winning FG lipstick went across my face, I turned my head while putting it on..it happened fast lol, no time to think about that ;)

Whatcha think about the game coming up? At this point I’ll believe anything lol!

haha hope they have a gym there so I can keep the #s off

if you can eat everything. At first I was worried about this game, but as the week has gone on and after getting some awesome pointers from Rodney and Bfree, I actually feel a lot better about this game than the bears. The Bears stank of trap, but I think our pass rush and offense meets up pretty well with the Pats. And they have Nate Freakin’ Jones back there. That helps a lot

Yes they have a fitness center lol...how long have you been with your GF? Are you going for a special occasion? If so, tell the people booking your cruise, they will do something special for you:)

I hope our D can contain brady and not let him strike early and often..Tebow seems to be improving in the passing area, so hopefully he’s continued the improvement through this week, and our receivers can pull some down, without the drops.. I do think we are being really under estimated this week especially in the media. I hopped over to pats pulpit yesterday, and this guy wrote this horrible poem thing about tebow..it was so disgusting to read. He was backhandedly mocking tebow’s religion, and calling him a fraud at qb..it pissed me off.. But quite a few over there are really nice and very complimentary of our team..i think we have a good shot at a win too, I’m very excited about this game.

I loved the thing you posted in the fanshots about hoge..such an ass, so glad he got owned by ditka!

Just a tip though, don’t get in a cab on an island with someone named “wiley” they are going to rob you lol…

I’d rather be hanging here than anywhere else;) besides not too many other teams are having as much fun as ours is, and their fans certainly aren’t as awesome!

Thanks for the reply Royal!

I agree, there was definitely some soreness in the Bears locker room; but Tebow also was the leading rusher for the Broncos in the game. I think it’s a valid statement, and while I agree that Tebow is a QB who is built like/runs like a FB/RB, I also think that if one is true, the other is true as well. :)

by H-bizzle on Dec 13, 2011 11:09 AM MST up reply actions

One problem.

He didn’t say Tebow was a running back that threw the ball well. He said he was a running back who does a good job for them. That implies that he runs the ball well. So it was one of two things. Either he was being petty, or he didn’t communicate clearly and needs to clarify his statement.

Every single report I’ve found of this makes no mention of passing. I can find no video or audio of this. The most complete account I can find is at http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=nfp-20111212_brian_urlacher_calls_tim_tebow_a_good_running_back

"He’s a good running back, man," Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher said. "He runs the ball well. They have a good offense. They do some different plays we don’t see. I thought we did a good job overall defending the unusual plays."
Tebow carried 12 times for 47 yards, including a 16-yard scramble on a third-and-15 play. But seriously?
"He’s a good running back," Urlacher repeated. "He does a good job running for them."

Even if he does say “He throws the ball well”, he’s still saying Tebow is a good running back who can throw well—all but saying he’s not a QB (despite the fact that he’s started what, 11 games in the NFL at the position?). But it doesn’t really matter, the jokes on Urlacher: If he’s taking a shot at Tebow he’s only insulting himself and the Bears. How can such a great defense get beat by a team that merely has “a good running back”?

by poorboywilly on Dec 13, 2011 11:35 AM MST reply actions

I'll see if I can find the audio clip when I get home tonight.

Right after he says “He’s a good running back” he says, “he throws the ball well.”

I agree: if his comments were intended as a cheap shot, he just lost a lot of respect in my book.

The sequence has to be considered H

His first remark was “he’s a good running back” then the reporter pressed and asked what about his passing and he said “he throws the ball well” but then he also added that he was just throwing comebacks and short outs. I agree with poorboy and JOEGATOR, it was definitely an underhanded compliment that came as a result of being butthurt from the loss. Just the fact that one of the classier LB’s in the league would throw something like that out tells you how bad it hurt to have someone that they had no respect for beat them.

Amen, PJBGF

I really don’t care what they say, either. I hope they keep doubting, and I hope we keep proving them wrong week after week. I’m just curious to see how people are taking some of these comments about Tebow.

I think other players and coaches are figuring out that what they say doesn’t rattle Tim, and that frustrates them even more.

by H-bizzle on Dec 13, 2011 12:28 PM MST up reply actions

Not that it matters or I care

but when you put together what he said before they played us and what he said after, I have to agree with the statement by royal he is just buttsore.

They lost, man up and give our qb credit for being a qb. He ran and they stopped him, he threw and they didn’t…they lost…

I lost a bunch of respect for him also…to bad that these good players don’t take a bit out of Tebows book and learn how to give credit where credit is due and maybe learn how to have a bit of humility…

by pwsbronco on Dec 13, 2011 12:35 PM MST reply actions

If that was his intention

I absolutely agree. I think more players and coaches should take a lot from Tebow’s book as far as the media is concerned. So many athletes concerned with giving out their opinions and responses, with complete disregard for how they might be slighting someone else. Take a seat, and watch the master in action. Tebow knows how to handle the media, and maintain his humility. If he goes to the SB and/or wins it, I still think he will maintain his attitude, and that’s huge.

I guess what I’m saying here, pws, is that rather than hating on others for their opinions, I’m beyond glad that we have someone who says the right things and, as far as I’m concerned, actually means them.

by H-bizzle on Dec 13, 2011 12:55 PM MST up reply actions

Tebows MSM problem

Is that he basically says the same things over and over (which is incredibly smart by the way) and in doing so doesn’t give them good sound bites. They’re already editing out his acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and they’re starting to get tired of him always praising his team and coaches. You can tell by the types of questions he’s getting now…ex… “Tim how frustrated were you when your receivers kept dropping passes?” Tebow- “I’m just blessed to be on a team with such great players and Demaryious, Deck and Willis were making great plays”.

Speaking of not flinching

Did you notice his reaction to DT dropping the long TD pass? It was nothing, no shoulder shrugs or hand waving just, ok what do we do next. Then he tells DT don’t worry , you’ll catch the game winning TD (which was almost the case).
Compare that to Romo who blamed Willis for not catching an uncatchable pass or even Brady who lays into his rookie WR on the sideline and gets his OC fired up.

"I wouldn't call it Tebow Time I'd call it Bronco Time"- Tim Tebow

by asinsoin on Dec 13, 2011 1:27 PM MST up reply actions

I did see that.

Even with Decker’s drop, where he facepalmed – Tebow walked over, gave him a friendly pat on the head, and went to the sidelines. This is a guy that actually believes everything he says, and that is quite the attitude to have, and I’m sure a difficult one to maintain.

Then again, that might be the reason he is so good in the clutch – he doesn’t have expectations from anyone else but himself, so in the end, he doesn’t blame anyone except himself if/when things go wrong.

by H-bizzle on Dec 13, 2011 1:30 PM MST up reply actions

Don't know what his intention was

but I would just like to see these great players put their egos aside for a second when they lose and not bring this on themselves by ignoring the fact that they got beat….And they didn’t get beat by Tebows feet as he more heavily implied by calling him a good running back and nothing about being a qb… that is where I am coming from…

as far as hating on others for their opinions, I don’t know what you mean on that but I do agree it is far better to have someone who says the right things and actually mean them..

by pwsbronco on Dec 13, 2011 1:14 PM MST reply actions

I agree with you

I think the placement of what Urlacher said suggests that he might have been insinuating negatively, but the way I see it, we have a weapon that can’t even be described properly, by one of the greatest linebackers in the league. I’ll notch it as a compliment. :)

As far as hating on their opinions – I’m glad we no longer have people like Marshall and the not-so-smart media guys who run their mouths, or let their off-field actions become problems. That annoyed me, having superstars who couldn’t get their heads out of their behinds. I’m glad that Tebow, as asinsoin mentioned above, is not taking the bait. :)

by H-bizzle on Dec 13, 2011 1:24 PM MST up reply actions

I agree, he defies the usually description

These guys are used to QBs being a certain way. Tebow doesn’t fit that and so there ability to process and appreciate what he just did to them is confounded. They know they lost, can’t believe that they did, and don’t understand how. Film study on Monday probably made it more obvious. But in the moment, his comments didn’t really surprise me, because at the end of the day all he really remembers is running everywhere after # 15, and mostly not getting him.

by shasta77 on Dec 14, 2011 7:03 PM MST up reply actions

Just heard a stat this morning that kind of boggled my mind...

Opponents blitz Tebow about 40% in the first three quarters. Only 28% in the 4th. The biggest disparity against any quarterback in the league. I hope Bill doesn’t wise up to this.

by H-bizzle on Dec 15, 2011 6:51 AM MST up reply actions

You know, I though the same when I read it. That he was kinda acknowledging Tebow’s athleticism in addition to his (admittedly developing) passing skills since when Tim lit up 4th quarter he ran all over their defense.
But that’s because I kinda admire(d?) Urlacher. It DEFINITELY can be taken as underhanded commentary, and probably was intended as such, so I’ll defer to the majority on this one.

by red13th on Dec 13, 2011 6:39 PM MST reply actions

classy, or a HOF’er. He always talks trash, and is constantly a sore loser, and exhibits poor sportsmanship. This is a perfect example of it. Him and Briggs flapped their yaps leading into this game, and got that yap smacked shut. Egads! More knuckleheads and numbskulls........

TEBOWs strength is his threat as a runner even as he rolls out to the side or stands in the pocket. To this point, he has been characterized as an average and streaky passer/thrower. If his threat is as a runner, and theat sets up his throws, then you have to think that maybe, just maybe, Urlacker knows what he is saying. I cannot disagree with what he said.

Butthurt TEBOW fans are often worse than whiney Faider fans. I am sure Urlacher is sorry he didn’t say it the way you’d like him to say it, but consider the actual words and think about them.
