Broncos vs Patriots Studs and Duds - Mile High Report
If I had to describe the Broncos 41-23 loss to the Patriots in one word, that word would be "ugly". The sad part is that it didn't have to be that way. The Broncos got off to an abnormally quick start and looked like they were ready to shoot it out with Tom Brady for 60 minutes.

can’t win them all. Time to get back to work w/ the task of getting better each and every game. Now the hype can come down some, this loss just may be good for the Broncos.

I like that thinking!
W-L record doesn't matter to me.... I just want to see a team on the rise at the end of the year!
Seeing the playoff scenario’s for how Denver makes the playoffs is very encouraging. We certainly remain in control of our own destiny.
A win vs Buffalo (a team that looks like the worst one in the NFL) will knock both San Diego and KC out of the AFC West division race. So that would be a great start.
Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you (including you Elway).
I don’t even know if OAK will beat Orton next week.
We just need to beat a sorry Buffalo team and I expect we’re in. As in… playoff bound after next week’s games are played.

After Denver's loss to Detroit...
6 straight wins! Let’s hope for the same outcome following this loss to New England! Better to lose now than when we play them in the playoffs. Go Broncos!!
I hope we can avoid the Pats in the playoffs. We can’t cover there TEs with our personnel.

I imagine we will see them in the playoffs somewhere though...
Also, it will be nice to see BDawk out there against them. Not saying he’s the answer to covering their TEs but he would definitely help
Not really. We need someone like Eric Berry or Champ Bailey on those guys. I was saddened that DJ and Woodyard appeared to have no shot.
We need Allen to come up with a different game plan as well. Dennis did a poor job yesterday. One of the few times, but still.
Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you (including you Elway).
I absolutely agree with you about Allen....
he is going to have to get a little more creative but i really think if this team is Superbowl bound, we will have to go through NE
I’m focused on making the playoffs. Anything beyond that is gravy. Seeing us yesterday was another reminder that we were 4-12 last year and 1-4 this year.
There remain a lot of holes on our roster and our HC is a pretty crappy game day coach

That’s true. I am getting a little ahead of myself. No matter what happens the rest of the way, this season has been a huge success. I really want us to be in the playoffs and have a chance at making a run though. Also, I am praying that we keep the focus on defense in the draft and get a good #2 corner. I am sick of seeing Goodman get beat and I think yesterday’s game solidified that we need some help at DT. We need someone to be able to get a push up the middle so we don’t have to blitz every time to cover up some holes. What are your thoughts McGeorge?
Same thoughts as you. Add in an MLB early and LG in the middle rounds. Need a speedster for the offense. A 3rd down back and/or deep threat.

I'm sure a lot of running backs would like to come to Denver
considering we’re the #1 rushing offense
The Definition of an optimist: A Buffalo Bills fan waiting at Buffalo Niagara International Airport for the Bills to return from winning the Super Bowl.
A backup for McGahee is a higher priority than a 3rd down back. Knomo and Ball are good enough as 3rd down backs. We need a better RB to come in when Willis gets nicked up. In fact if we get a good young player, McGahee could be the back-up.
With you on MLB and LG.
totally agree
Mcgahee has been great but we can already see wear and tear on him. I’m not sure he can last a full season next year.
Ball and Moreno and JJ have been more than serviceable.
wouldn’t mind a percy harvin type player though.
An all-around RB
Would be nice in the 2nd round (or first) if was somone outstanding is on the board and there are no more premier cornerbacks left. With our rush-heavy offense, I’d love a stud RB who could also catch a lot of short balls for Tebow when he needs to check down.
I think we would have won this game - few teams can overcome -3 in turnovers.
Fumbles are such a random thing too…won’t happen to us every game.
I think your right Tim
Plus, I know no one is talking about this, but Rahim Moore dropped a sure INT that could have helped Denver gain some momentum. I think if we don’t put the ball on the ground like yesterday
The Tebow and Ball fumbles are just football plays that went against us.
The Cosby fumble was sheer and utter stupidity by a bottom of the roster player. Just a killer error.
Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you (including you Elway).
Ball was not protecting the football
… he has to have 2 hands on the ball when running between the tackles, or at minimum keep it tight to his body… that was a stupid play on his part, because he was inside running with the ball flapping out in the air where a hit can easily take it out.
Ball was 3rd
on the depth chart to start the season. There is a reason for that. Truth of the matter we have been starting 2nd and 3rd sting players all over the field this year.

I’d rather play NE in the playoffs than BAL or PIT.
We are becoming a physical team and if we can control the flow of the game like we did in the 1st quarter, we can overpower finese teams (like NE). But we aren’t as physical as BAL or PIT and they could manhandle our OL like CHI did.
Our OL got handled in Pass pro yesterday also
and our D cant stop good passing games like the Packs, Lions, or Pats. Id rather see the Ravens where we might be able to keep their O in check and make it a defensive struggle

Agree that our D can’t stop good passing games. Any of NE, BAL or PIT could torch us. NE obviously being the most likely.
But I don’t agree that our OL got handled. On a lot of Tebow’s sacks, I thought the line did fine but TT didn’t step up into the pocket to buy extra time. He rarely seems to do this and prefers to move laterally and then loses vision and either escapes or gets sacked. He is young though and will get better at this.
It also didn’t help that our WRs couldn’t get open on a lot of plays and there was no where to go with the ball.
I’d rather face Flacco than Brady. Nuff said.
The Ravens would be the best match up for Denver of the three.
Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you (including you Elway).
Well, we’ll probably get the Ravens if we win the division. And then face the Pats if we beat the Ravens
Until we started fumbling yesterday, the Pats couldn’t stop our offense and we stopped them once. If we didn’t fumble, then I think we keep scoring with the Pats and our team will not wear down before theirs.
But BAL and PIT could shut down our run game and then we are a 3 and out team.
I’d rather beat a crappy QB like Flacco 13-9 than try to beat a 1st ballot HOF QB like Brady 35-33.

Love how the articles are saying the Pats D showed the league how to stop Tebow
Hate to tell them but forcing 3 turnovers in a row will stop any team.
It’s also not an easy task to do.
I doubt it happens again this season.
While this may sound like complete apologeticism...
I actually don’t blame Tebow for his fumble. Yes, it would be nice if he holds onto that ball. However, that play was absolutely blown up by the Patriots’ defensive line. I looked at the replay and Tebow was hit approximately 2 seconds after the snap, maybe slightly less. That’s not enough time to really do anything.
by Tezcatlipoca on Dec 19, 2011 8:51 AM MST up reply actions
Agree
Blown blocking on our O-line. Tebow could have kept it, but it was not on him.
I'll put the fumble on Tebow and the sack on the o-line
yeah Tebow got hit about 2-3 seconds after the snap but he saw the pressure coming seeing as he tried to escape it. He had the chance and should’ve tucked it. That only made what was already a bad play worse.
And now for something completely different
by AlbertaBronc on Dec 19, 2011 9:24 AM MST up reply actions
The Bronco offense stopped itself
We owned them in the first quarter. Hopefully Ball learned a valuable lesson on covering the ball up in traffic.
On Tebow’s fumble, it looked like the the guy he was suppose to option off hit him and knocked the ball out. That would explain why he wasn’t blocked. It was a good play by the Patsies D.
Quan Cosby should be in the dog house. Hopefully we see Eddie back there next week.

That might be a little bit premature
Cosby has been solid up until yesterday, more than likely it was a just a bad day. I wouldn’t be suprised to see him go though.
"You’re only great if you win something. I mean, Alexander wasn’t Alexander the Mediocre or Alexander the Average. He was Alexander the Great, and there’s a reason for it."-Shannon Sharpe
It is the game day actives that matter at this point, not roster spots.
I’d rather avoid having Decker or Royal return kicks until we are in the playoffs. Then you need to have them do it.
Cos made some bad decisions yesterday but it isn’t a pattern from him. First game he really made bad decisions.
That is his whole reason for being on the roster
I am sure he’s learned a valuable lesson. Both his mistakes were made because he was trying to make something happen. All he needs to do is settle himself down in those situations and do what he is suppose to do. Though his mistakes were costly yesterday, they are not typical and can be overcome.

1) We are good, but not good enough to overcome turnovers
2) We are good, but we are not as good as the Patriots, Tom Brady is the real deal
A baseball park is the one place where a man's wife doesn't mind his getting excited over somebody else's curves
That people still discount and doubt Brady’s excellence at this point is dumber than the people that stand by Tebow being nothing more than a TE playing QB.
Tom Brady is one of the best 10 QBs in NFL history. I’d take him over Marino, over Farve or Warner or Bradshaw or Fouts or Starbuch or Aikman or many other HOF guys.

we don't have the horses on D
to control high octane offenses. I know Buffalo kinda stinks but they have an offence capable of putting up a lot of points too. This wont be the easiest matchup either.
Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?
Yep....can't take them lightly.
The loss yesterday was probably a blessing in disguise. Less rabid media coverage, and refocusing on the basics this week will be a good thing.

Its interesting because BUF is actually a poor matchup for us
Like NE, they rely on a short passing game and quick plays to spread out the DEF and beat you horizantally…. with an occasional (actually, they run a lot of them) trick play or deep pass when the deep coverage gets complacent.
The way folks beat them is with playing 2 deep, and then sit the other DBs and LBs down in the short zones…. add a touch of pressure and Fitz will toss it to you, as the oline and his weak arm aren’t good enough to challenge on the deeper routes.
Now, our problem is that with our poor DB play, relying too much on a few guys deep could mean big plays (see Ochocinco’s TD) if the guy with deep responsibility messes up. I expect Champ to shut down one side, but many of the BUF WRs are big bodies that could abuse Goody…
The nice thing is the TEs and other supporting guys in BUF are not half the caliber of Gronk/Hernandez/RBs… so our LBs should be a bit better able to handle them 1-on-1, which will open up the blitz, etc. a lot more than we could with NE.
Thanks Tim!
At least We put Brady on his back once (twice, but one was really nice!
Heck, can’t see this gif too much either. Thanks for the .gif Nick! Here…

I recall reading from several ex-players that holding occurs on just about every play. It just usually never gets called unless its blatant or the ref decides to stick to the letter of the law for once.
Maybe the Pats OL are just canny enough to know what they can get away with.
I’ll defer to someone else here with real experience of playing line however!

I've noticed that he seems to hate Us
But one reason I thought previously, was because of how he emphasizes the calls. He’s really animated. But since 2009, I’ve seen him referee other games, and he does that all the time. Just a very animated Ref. Blind half the time, and certainly biased against the Broncos, but animated with his calls consistently.
It really is too bad the fans didn’t get to vote in the officials. I imagine We’d consistently get ‘better’ (see: fair) results.

Not that I know of
I mean, I’m sure there exists, a way to do so. Just not one I’m aware of.

there were several times I was screaming at the refs for holding penalties
it seems like the Pats got away with a lot during that game, and we didn’t get away with anything.

One more thing on that
Dumerville may get fined for that. Miller got fined for nearly the exact same hit on Sanchez that also didnt get flagged

Which
is BS – can’t hit helmet to helmet so it’s only natural to duck the head while going in for a tackle now. Taking football out of football….boo!

Yup, at the rate we're seeing...
By the time our kids are old enough… Or perhaps, kid’s kids… It’ll be the NFFL. National Flag Football League.

Unless of course
We could go back and start changing final scores because of missed penalties. Yeah, that’d work out real well.

Dumervil won't get fined for the sack, Brady still had the ball.
Miller’s fine was for hitting Sanchez in the back 2 steps after the ball was released…Different all around. Miller’s was a late hit where Doom’s was a clean sack helmet to the chest. Perfect.

Thats right
Thanks for that. All I remembered was that millers hit and dooms looked very similar as far as the technique used. Helmet to chest

Perfect form tackle, he lead with his facemask, not the crown of the head.
That is exactly how tackling should be taught.

DA's game plan and scheme vs Pats.
One thing that disappointed me a great deal was DA’s game plan of dropping Miller in zone coverage and send DJ and Woodyard on stunt blitzes that were instantly recognized. Why drop your best pass rusher into Zone coverage??? If your gonna use him in coverage let him line up on Gronk or Hernandez 1 v 1, especially if you are not gonna let him do his thing. Brady ate up the “zone biltzes” like they was bitty shrimp cocktails, and always does.
".....Im the waiting beast....Im the twisted nerve..."
I think Miller’s injury is affecting his play more than we know. Maybe he was dropped into coverage more because the coach knew that he wouldn’t be as effective as a rusher.
If we didn’t fumble in the 2nd quarter and kept sustaining drives and running the ball, then the game would have been closer and maybe we wear down the Pats.
Belichick showed 5 WR sets a few times and they needed all the coverage they could get...
He knew in doing that that all his OLine had to concentrate on was Doom in pass rush. Ayers has been a nonfactor for past few weeks and has never been the consummate pass rusher. Tha’s why I feel in order to beat teams like New England who aren’t afraid of going five wide we need to upgrade the LDE asap. I’ve been calling for a first rounder, but get the blow torch treatment by the know-it-alls…Whitney Mercilus is a beast and I really don’t care what Fox does with Ayers, Ayers wasn’t Fox’s pick he was McDaniels’ blunders of two 1st rd picks. A three headed monster is better than one I believe and will continue to believe that eventually Fox will want that to sooner than later. It was noticable in the game yesterday. Doom RDE and whoever at LDE (Whitney Mercilus) and Miller on the edge would definitely be an OCs nightmare…Bring in Ayers on running downs if Mercilus can’t handle both, but I think he could.

but if we can improve, it is wise to do so
