NFL Releases Statement On CBA Negotiations

The NFL released a statement on NFLLabor discussing the status of CBA negotiations with the NFLPA, specifically yesterday;s meetings and the lack of any new meetings after NFL Owners reportedly walked away from the bargaining table after reviewing a potential offer from the union:

"Despite the inaccurate characterizations of yesterday’s meeting, out of respect to the collective bargaining process and our negotiating partner, we are going to continue to conduct negotiations with the union in private and not engage in a point-counterpoint on the specifics of either side’s proposals or the meeting process. Instead, we will work as hard as possible to reach a fair agreement by March 4. We are fully focused on that goal."

Hopefully the two sides will get together soon, but it appears thing will get worse before they get better.

No incentive for owners to settle

If what I understand is correct (not always the case!), the NFL and owners still get the same TV revenue from the networks even if no games are played. Doesn’t this mean that they are in a position to MAKE money without having to pay any players? They absolutely hold all the cards, and the players will never get the deal they want. Never.

by cskilly on Feb 10, 2011 4:43 PM MST reply actions

Well then

if the players want to play, they’ll have to give up what the owners want them to. We’ll find out how much they really love the game I guess

As much as all of us say we'd play for peanuts because we love the game this is their job. yes they are lucky to be able to play a game

for a living but the owners should love the game just as much as the players. It’s the game that makes them richer. We’ll also find out just how much the owners love the game too.

That is a good point

and I think that the majority of the owners (sans Jerry Jones and a few others) do love the game so I still believe we’ll get things done. Let’s have more meetings guys, 3 weeks…

I'd question whether the game really makes them richer...

Jerry Jones maybe? Most of these guys invest nearly a billion dollars to buy teams, and I highly doubt their return on investment is anywhere near what it could be if they pursued other investment opportunities. I really do think most owners really are involved for the love of the game and the competition that it gives them.

If I had a dollar for every Super Bowl San Diego has won, I'd go window shopping at the dollar store.

by Kgrone on Feb 10, 2011 8:37 PM MST up reply actions

I agree with you.

You’d have to love football beyond reason. Why else would anyone want to invest that much $, time and effort on something that is so precarious. 32 teams. One championship game per year. Some teams have never even been to a superbowl. Much less won at one. Look at our team. We are 33% in SB wins.

I think Ken Behring

once the owner of the Seattle Seahawks said on one occasion, if you love retaining your money, there are more worthwhile pursuits to put your investments into than a professional football franchise. I suppose that’s why he no longer owns the Seahawks, but that’s a really good point. Gosh, I’m getting frustrated but I still have faith things can get done on time.

They wouldn't do it if they lost money. If they were losing money you'd see more teams changing ownership.

Yes they invest billions but they make a profit on it once they do otherwise they are bad business men. I also think they are involved because of love of the game but you can obviously see the difference when you hear comments like Rooney’s and then comments like Jones.

by BroncoMath101 on Feb 11, 2011 8:21 AM MST up reply actions

Hmm

Doesn’t anyone see the rubberband snapping back on this one? The networks are going to get that money back in the next contracts. Only ESPN has a contract that extends beyond 2011. I don’t think the networks are going to be jumping all over the NFL to renew if the league has killed it’s viewing audience

Currently, three American terrestrial television networks CBS ($3.73B), NBC ($3.6B) and Fox ($4.27B), as well as cable television’s ESPN ($8.8B) are paying a combined total of $20.4 billion1 to broadcast NFL games through the 2011 season for CBS, Fox, and NBC and through 2013 for ESPN

Then there is the partial victory by the NFLPA….

The union, meanwhile, noted in a statement that Burbank awarded it damages because of violations in “the NFL’s negotiation of lockout insurance in its contracts with ESPN and NBC.” Union spokesman George Atallah said he didn’t know the amount the NFL was ordered to pay.

Something has to give here. Fans have complained for a long time about the long timeouts on the field and endless commercials on TV. With a lockout comes a loss of viewers. loss of viewers means companies won’t want to pay high prices to advertise. The NFL is going to have to renegotiate contracts or broadcast everything on ESPN and NFLN. I would not want to be in the owners shoes.

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.

by Sean in Pa. on Feb 10, 2011 5:06 PM MST up reply actions

Well,

I think the NFL is so popular that even if it were to lockout an entire season, everyone would still come back in droves. And pay more! We can’t help it…..we are a bunch of crazy crack addicts, and the NFL is the big sweet rock! haha…

The more I think about it, the more I think the owners don’t give a FLYING F*** about anything except their bottom line. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain….more and more money.

by cskilly on Feb 10, 2011 5:15 PM MST up reply actions

That is what the owners think

The NFL has a strong position here, no doubt about that. Still, my opinion is that both sides will wait till regular season games are going to be lost and then get the deal done. I am not sure why the owners want some revenue sharing back. I don’t understand how that all works anyway. Do player salaries come from the players percentage? What does the NFLPA get of this and what do they do with it?
I hear a lot lately how the last deal got pushed through and the owners basically had to take a bad deal. Maybe that is the view of the owners but that comes from the owners not doing anything on their own to provide for players well being. There is a lot to be said about the fact that the players are the product.

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.

by Sean in Pa. on Feb 10, 2011 5:36 PM MST up reply actions

I think they

did it as a gesture to Tagliabue. Of course, everyone deep down thinks Tagliabue would be responsible for any work stoppage that may occur and that may explain why he’s not in the HOF right now…

THAT is why I don’t think the owners will go through with the lockout. They will be in debt to the networks, they just want to gouge the players for all they can.

NFL is less than a prime product

I love this website more than NFL games. We live in the Seahawks TV market and the NFL assumes that people in the United States do not move around. Their view of human mobility is probably more suited to the 16th century. They will black out the AFC game in the afternoon and the channel local runs paid info commercials presumably in the hope driving me to a Seakawks game.

The games themselves have no continuity and unless my favorite team is playing it is mostly boring. This past season I took to watching the last of the first half and the last of the 2nd and skipped all those obnoxious commercials. I started doing that with NBA games 20 years ago and baseball even further back. Now I hardly watch either.

The NFL needs to enter the 21st century and make access more diverse and easier for a reasonable fee and cut out 75% of the ads. There is nothing wrong with banner ads at the bottom of the screen or ads on the stadium at field level as with Premier league soccer.

The game might be more interesting with 15 seconds between plays, a kind of mandated hurry up offense. I’m not convinced that all the substitution packages and specialization makes the game any more interesting. When I see Peyton Manning doing a kind of weird ballet behind the center to call a play, it seems gay. My wife from another culture laughs when she says fat men wearing tights. Despite the NFL’s desire to globalize the game, it is highly ethnocentric game.

For comparison watch a Rugby Match with the New Zealand All-Blacks and their Australian and South African rivals. The World Cup is coming fairly soon. The action flows, the contact is often every bit as awesome as the NFL, and the game isn’t ruined with inane ads.

I watch the Broncos whenever they are on our extended TV package because like everyone here I love the Broncos and have for a long time. But the game has serious problems.

by NZbronco on Feb 10, 2011 6:28 PM MST reply actions

completely disagree. (from another Bronco fan in the Seahawks market)

The NFL is an excellent product. I enjoy watching even when the Broncos aren’t playing.

…the other culture? Bet it’s even funnier. Soccer? Give me a freaking break. Boring game. Horrible fans. The organizations? Crooked as hell.

Manning seems gay? what?

Ethnocentric? Idiocy.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. DA

by Whidbey Bronco on Feb 10, 2011 7:52 PM MST up reply actions

No way soccer ever comes into play versus the NFL in any circle I run in.

It’s big on the world stage…I know one person that I would consider an acquaintance that even follows it. It’s boring and I don’t know what contact you’re talking about (look at a guy wrong and he falls to the ground acting like he’ll never walk again).

I don’t care for Rugby, but I can concede there is some draw there. Soccer will never compete with the NFL in this country. Lockout or not.

In players dispute with owners, I have most sympathy for NFL players when compared to other sports

Nothing is guaranteed in NFL and Players are routinely injured, suffer concussion… What if they make millions, most of them loose it pretty quickly and sometimes they are not healthy to enjoy it… Aren’t they providing the entertainment that has us glued to the tv.. I agree owners are putting lot of money and their investment, but at the end of the day they can file bankruptcy without it affecting their personal life as much…

As much as I like the franchise tag in NBA, I hate it in NFL because of the zero leverage for players… Franchises can play one year salary and if the player is injured that is the max. money the player will probably see for the rest of his career.

Really not the owners fault if the players lose their money 'pretty quickly'

These guys are very well paid for what they bring to the table.

If players don't take care of their money they make now...

Giving them more won’t do a dang bit of good. If they spend everything they have now, they’ll just spend whatever extra you give them.

This is an apt indictment from the players from espn.com's message boards

Players want the owners to open the books to see revenue figures. How about the players open their books to see how much they make off investments on top of their salary, after all fair is fair. Or are the players to dumb to be investing for their future?
