Back to Greeley?
With the talk out of Dove Valley about getting back to the Bronco Way and recapturing the team's culture of winning, I was wondering if any of you thought it might be a good idea for the Broncos to returning to a more traditional training camp?
I know the players used to complain endlessly about it, and having picked up a BA in Sociology at UNC I know Greeley ain't the most exciting place in the world. At the same time, it sure seemed like we had better teams with better chemistry when we were doing a get away training camp.
So why should we do it? What distinguishes a get away training camp from a camp held at the team's facilities?
Well, the first thing I think of from a sociological point of view is that it creates an opportunity for bonding the team. When you take people and put them in a unique and challenging situation, the general human response is to come together as a group to make the experience more manageable. In the process you learn the personalities of the others in the group. You gain insight about them as people, not just football players. In the long run, the empathy that comes from that can lead to much better communication and more efficient play. Do I think that if Tim Tebow knows Eric Decker as an individual that they will play better together? Yes, I do.
A second aspect of a get away training camp is it allows the organization a period of time where all the players, all the coaches, and all the rest of the staff must live the Bronco Way. For two or three weeks they are Broncos only. They are not day employees who transform back into husband and father when they get home that evening. They are only Broncos because they are living as Broncos. If done properly, this environment creates a sort of intersubjective glue amongst the team. Veterans renew their understanding of what it means to be part of this group. Young players learn from the veterans and coaches what it means to be part of the group. The team has a chance to show its loyalty to the players and the players have a chance to feel loyalty to the team. What is good team chemistry anyway? It's a bunch of guys with a shared goal and a shared method coming together to create in reality the outcome they envision.
Think of training camp in football as a watered down version of military boot camp. What do they do at Parris Island? The make marines. The way they make marines is to remove young men from society, take away their distinguishing characteristics (what do you think that haircut is about anyway?), put them through an immensely difficult process that they can only survive by cooperating, and instill in them a philosophy of life. By the end you have a group of people that can work together toward a common goal by reflex. An NFL training camp isn't that intense (though I'm guessing Bear Bryant's college players might have been able to skip boot camp and go straight into the marines), but the principles of the interaction are still applicable and should still have beneficial outcomes for team chemistry and on field efficiency.
A final potential benefit of a traditional training camp is the opportunity to bond with the fans. John Elway and company are talking about openness and it seems to me you could structure an annual bonding experience with the fans around a traditional training camp. And I'm not just thinking about it in terms of access to the players for autographs or the chance to spot players walking around a campus at night. I'm thinking in terms of how fans feel about the Broncos in their lives. I have talked to plenty of folks from all along the Front Range who planned trips to see their team in Greeley. Most of the time those are very happy memories. If you're the Broncos, you can do a lot worse than having happy memories with loved ones be associated with the product that you're peddling. Just sayin'.
Final note. I don't think that training camp necessarily has to be in Greeley. I do think it it needs to be far enough away from Denver to be a true get away but close enough for the fans to get their with a few hours driving time. Greeley would be good because of the sense of tradition but I'm sure it would go well in Ft. Collins, Colorado Springs, or even Cheyenne.
It's the special events in our lives that make us the people we are, and a couple weeks of get away to make a football team sounds like a special event to me.

Players can't meet with coaches
Or at team property, but they can meet. Players have been doing it for years, McNabb runs a camp for WR and QB’s from around the league. I believe the quarterbacks, backs and receivers will likely meet at least once, even if it’s just socially. Orton has already spent time with the offensive line and Quinn. The offensive line and Decker have spent time together. Players who are friends will meet together, and I also hope that they will meet together to improve their basics.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
I'm sure they will.
And the CBA mess makes everything iffy. What I’m talking about is more the long term training camp approach for the Broncos and the benefits of putting aside a couple of weeks to bond as a team in structured environment. When we have camp at Dove Valley I think the players probably just feel it as another practice.
The players can meet for long periods
But they would have to bring in coaches who aren’t currently in the NFL, and I don’t think want to be practicing actual plays without their coaches there. I could see them running drills, practicing footwork and accuracy, but plays are iffy without coaches being present.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
Whenever they have an actual training camp.
there will be coaches present.
I’m talking about where we hold our official training camp, not how we deal with a lockout.
That's true
But no TC or mini-camps can be held till a new CBA is put into place. Link.

Yup.
I’m thinking more along the lines of where we have training camp over the next ten years and the pros and cons of consistently having them at Dove Valley or at a get away location. :)
Then I've been misunderstanding your whole post
I read through it and got a different message, my mistake.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
:)
No worries. Not like I called it a ten year plan or anything. And it’s true that when I wrote the post I wasn’t thinking about the implications of the labor situation on switching for this year in particular. Definitely an important consideration in the short term for anything we want to think about around the Broncos.
I totally agree with you on what having an away training camp could do....
However, with the opulent comforts of Dove Valley, I just don’t see it happening. The horse has left the barn so to speak… That’s not taking into account the savings of having it on team property… Dove Valley didn’t exist back when the Greely (or even the school of mines waaaaaaay back in the day) hosted training camps, but now that it does it makes sense that it’ll stay.

I recommend "The Color Orange"
a book that detailed the 1996 season. It has a huge section on what training camp was like in Greely for the players. Pretty great read. (I don’t see them going back to that).

Yup.
The primary negative I see to switching back to an away camp is the money. I’m pretty sure that was the reasoning behind having camp at Dove Valley in the first place.
Lots of teams still hold away training camps, but it would definitely take some balls on the part of management to do it with Denver. It’s definitely more comfortable and generally easier for the players to stick with it the way it is now.
The book sounds like a must find. Thanks for the rec :)
Agreed. Not gonna happen
How do you justify spending more money and getting less comfort/inferior facilities at the same time?
The process might pay off.
Lots of teams still do get away camps. The Steelers had their 2010 camp at St. Vincents College in Latrobs, PA. The Packers went to work at St. Norbert’s College in Da Pere, Wisconsin. Has worked out for them this season. There are always trade offs. Adequate facilities with a chance to bond for a couple weeks might justify taking a couple weeks away from the state of the art. Top corporations spend money to send their staffs out to the woods to bond in cheesy retreats. I doubt they’d do that if they didn’t feel there was something to be gained. Is it likely the Broncos will change their training camp process? Maybe not. But everything should be considered when a team is as messed up as ours. It’s part of our tradition. It’s part of a number of winning cultures around the league. The Broncos aren’t one of those hanging at Dove Valley.
I would like to offer up my home in Altadena, CA...
I’ve got a litle backyard and a bench that they could use. Oh I got a hose and enough paper plates for everyone but the coaches, defense, and tight ends.
Let’s build some character! All I ask is for a few million.
And a picture with Tebow.

They could go back to eating at Potato Brumbaughs!
My dad was on the opening staff for that place. he said they would serve the players during training camp all the time. We still always eat there when we visit CO, Great French Onion soup and steak. Mmmmm
I have no credentials
I like it
I think the away training camp is the way to go for team unity. Cost be damned!
Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.
I so miss the days
of Greeley before Golf carts came. I am not an autograph hound but we use to love to hang out and visit with the players as they walked form the Dorms to practice. I talked to Shannon Sharpe his second year when he was transitioning from WR to TE. It was awesome. We didnt bug him just talked to him on his way and he was way cool.
Loved being able to move around the fields to see the group I was wanting to look at. usually the WR as I always use to pride myself on picking that guy who was the surprise pick to make the team.
Ahhhhh the good ole days before the players got so full of them selves and the people caused it because of the rudeness and greed.
Yeah,
nothing like the smell of cow s*** and or the blood being baked off the slaughter house floors to go along with some football.
"West Coast Seattle boy-The Jimi Hendrix Anthology-" Get it.
So have it in Colorado Springs or Cheyenne.
The place doesn’t matter as long as it is away from normal routine and is in reach of the fans.
yup, your right
gstreet, carbon monoxide and drive by shootings are much better
I'd love it
Since then I’d get to go regularly…I moved up here the last two years that they had training camp in Greeley…it was awesome getting to watch the guys practice.
It isn’t going to happen though. They built the training facility so they would have the best possible training facility. There isn’t much Greeley (or any other “away” spot) has to offer than the whole remote isolation thing.

pros and cons to that
I’m a high school swim coach at a fairly successful program, and I know comparing football to swimming is like apples to oranges, but once you are past X’s and O’s team building is pretty much the same. My team has done it both ways, last year we went to a college not far from the high school during the week after Christmas. The athletes responded well and the training plan was on the front of their minds. We as coaches were able to monitor diets and had the opportunity to interact with our athletes outside of the training times. They did go home to their parents each night, but belonged to the coaches for the majority of that time. The negatives were also apparent, when we got back to our home pool the training effort on the part of the athletes went way down. The focus dwindled nearly to the level of the first few weeks of practice and we were very disappointed.
This year we had the same type of practice schedule but instead of going to a new location we stayed at the high school. We are currently preparing for our state championship meet next weekend and the camaraderie just isn’t where it was last year, but we haven’t had a dip in focus and effort during the training.
I’m almost not sure which worked better, if we go based on results we haven’t had as strong a season as last year, but we graduated a very talented group of seniors last year and were bit by the injury bug hard early this season.
So I guess my answer is I don’t know, but I thought I’d throw my 2 cents into the pot anyway.
