Why We Take a QB

There are a number of reasons I believe the Broncos will draft a QB in this years draft.  Everyone wishes all the interest is just to create the most well executed smokescreen the Broncos have ever pulled off in order to grab some extra pick, but I don’t think so.  Here are a few reasons for why I think we take a QB in this year’s draft...

1) There is no way the Broncos would waste so much time looking into these prospects with no intention of drafting them.  We could be spending time and effort on other defensive players but we are not.  The 3 guys have been honest and open with us from the beginning and I don’t see that everything they have said regarding their interest in QBs this year is all a lie.

2)  There is a good possibility that Tebow is not the answer and The Stool knows that. They realize the QB position is too important to say a prayer and hope that Tebow shows up to training camp looking like Steve Young.  Tebow may be a winner but he looks awful throwing the ball. That motion is brutal and it will have to change because the ball simply takes too long to leave his hand.  I took the liberty to evaluate some of the awkward motions of successful NFL quarterbacks such as Rivers and Young and while it may not have been picture perfect the release was quick, much quicker than Tebow.  The talent and level of play in the NFL is too good, and while he was able to get away with it in college, he won’t in the NFL.  Tebow looked capable of winning in the 3 games he started but it was based on sheer will and effort, not on skill.  I have heard many times that the offense in those last 3 games was as vanilla as it gets. The Broncos will not be successful for 16 games running that basic of an offense. I just don’t see that Tebow can drastically improve over and offseason with no mini camps and no training camps, especially when he had all of last year to improve his motion and release but looked no different/better than the day he came in.

3)  We have a new regime and that means they are going to want their own guy, especially Elway.  I think Elway looks at guys like Locker and Kaepernick and sees two guys very similar to his skill set and believes that he can turn them into the next great Broncos QB.  I have seen the arguments against taking these guys because they are the same as Tebow and while they may be projects they are both much more refined throwing the ball.  They are not FBs throwing a football, they are athletic QBs that can run if needed.

4)  QB is a need, not as big as some other positions but never-the-less we have no guaranteed starter at QB.  If the guys like one of the prospects they are going to take him. I think they believe it gives them competition for Tebow and a back-up plan in case he fails.  If Tebow succeeds then great and we either have a solid #2 (Quinn Sucks) or a future starter to trade, if he fails then we have another option at QB.
