Thoughts from the South

This is my first post.  I have been reading all of the mock drafts with all of the thoughts on how to fix the defense.  I have grown up in the south watching the SEC.  College football down here is more important than religion to most (not to me).  I am a big Georgia fan (although I live in 60 miles from Tuscaloosa) and have seen all of these defensive players that are being mocked to us on a weekly basis.  With that said I am telling you that playmakers and speed are what makes the difference between good and great teams.  Marcel Dareus is a good player that would be a cog on the line for years to come.  Having seen him play each week he will never be a Suh type player (my wife doesn't like this because she is a big Alabama fan).  Nick Fairley was the buzz down here throughout the 2010 season.  The problem with him was nobody knew of him in 2009.  If he had the same production in 2009 that he had in 2010 he would be a no brainer at the number 2 pick.  At this point, there is no reason to believe that either of these picks will give the Broncos the help they need.  The Broncos need playmakers.  All of the good defenses have great playmakers.  The Steelers have Polomolu and Harrison.  The Packers have Clay Matthews.  The Ravens have Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.  These are the difference makers.  I agree that games are won in the trenches but it is so much easier to get big guys that can hold their own on the line then it is to find truly great playmakers.  With that said I think the best thing the Broncos could do with the number 2 pick this year is draft Von Miller.  He is a playmaker and has done it for more than one year.  He will be a force on the defense like Clay Matthews is for the Packers.  I do think scheme matters but I dont think EFX are stupid enough to draft him and then not use the talents he has.  He would be a great start in rebuilding the defense.  We can get quality DT's in the second round that I think would do a fine job.  Marvin Austin will be available in the 2nd and will be a quality player for years.

Just a quick thought also on our QB's.  Again, living in the south with SEC football and being a Georgia fan I hated when we played Florida with Tim Tebow as the QB.  He will be a great player if he is given the chance.  He may not have the prototypical throwing motion but there have been many QB's through the years that were excellent without great motions (remember Ken Stabler?).  When the Broncos drafted Tebow my son and I were thrilled.  He is a playmaker just like Elway was.  I remember Elway's first season and he looked like a clown some of the time but he was a true playmaker with a desire to win.  That is what Tebow has.  Give him a chance.  He can lead this team like Elway did.   I have been a Bronoc fan all of my life and I know we can return to greatness.  Draft the playmakers and let them play to their talents and we will all be excited with out team once again.
