Arizona trading for Orton? Let’s think about it.

Lately I've read on the Internet that the Cardinals called the Broncos to make a trade involving Kyle Orton. I don’t know if this is true, but I was thinking about this possible trade. In this case, we must first set the market value of our player.

In a player versus player trade, the both sides evaluation becomes very subjective. In terms of pick, I rate him as an early/middle 2nd round. For sure he doesn’t worth an early 1st round pick, and even if someone overrate him for a late 1st round pick, there is no team in that spot that could be interested in our QB. On the other hand, if we trade him for a 3rd round pick (even an early one), then we would be devaluing our side.

So we have 2 possibilities: player x draft pick or player x player.

1. Player x draft pick - Analyzing the past 10 years of Arizona’s results, we have the following:

Year

Results

2010

5-11-0

2009

10-6-0

2008

9-7-0

2007

8-8-0

2006

5-11-0

2005

5-11-0

2004

6-10-0

2003

4-12-0

2002

5-11-0

2001

7-9-0

It’s very hard to predict how they will play in 2011 and this could lead us to make mistakes, so I think more coherent just take a simple average of the period. This would result in a 6-10-0 season. If someone thinks it’s more coherent to average only the last 5 years, this would give a 7-9-0 result. So they would have a pick near the #39 overall to offer as a 2nd round.

2. Player x player - Let's take a look at the starting team of the Cardinals to see which players might be interesting:

Offense

Defense

QB

D. Anderson

DE

C. Campbell

RB

T. Hightower

DE

D. Dockett

WR

L. Fitzgerald

NT

B. Robinson

WR

S. Breaston

OLB

J. Porter

TE

B. Patrick

OLB

C. Haggans

TE

S. Spach

ILB

P. Lenon

LT

L. Brown

ILB

D. Washington

A. Faneca

CB

D. Rodgers-Cromartie

C

L. Sendlein

CB

G. Toler

RG

D. Lutui

SS

A. Wilson

RT

B. Keith

K. Rhodes

Obviously Larry Fitzgerald, Adrian Wilson (free agent this year) and others are great talented players, as Tim Hightower (also free agent) is a RB that would bring an upgrade to our 3rd downs. This is not in dispute. The focus is to know which of these players would really be needed in Denver.

Darnell-dockett_medium
Honestly, the only one of this list that I would like to be an Orange & Blue is Darnell Dockett (45 tackles and 5.0 sacks in 2010). He is a pro bowler DE/DT that could play opposite of Dumervil and increase the level of our pass rushing even more, since Ayers hasn’t shown anything that he could or, as I think he would fit better, play as a great 3-tech DT. This trade would be awesome for us! Apart from him, I don’t see how necessary would be this trade involving any other player.

I think quite unlikely that the Cardinals do this trade: Darnell Dockett for Kyle Orton. But I see a great chance in the option of we take their 2nd round pick for 2012. Since this would probably be close to #39 overall, we would have a fair trade for both sides. I would accept this proposal. And you, Broncos fellas, do you imagine any other possible trades involving Arizona and Orton to benefit our team and still be fair enough for both?

GO BRONCOS!
