NFL Mock Drafts Review

So now that the draft has ended, and the near endless mocks have come to a not so quiet death, I thought, "hey, why not review how members here at MHR did on their mocks, as well as guys from around the internet.

Well I did that, compiled that data into a table, and, well, that's that. I know accountability sucks, I make mistakes all the time and would rather they be swept under the rug, but hey, in a situation like this, it's more fun then embarrassing.

So the two big things I looked at were whether the person chose the right player, and whether that player was taken at the spot projected. So while this post lacks the usual girth of my other posts, who cares, less reading. So what I did was I went through the archive and recorded the last mock a person did, and record that number. Nick Cast also had a very useful post the day before the draft where he asked for members final mocks, and I took a number of mocks from there as well.

Review:

A few shockers here, the first was Nick, I expected more man, I loved your final mock, but it just didn't work out at all, I mean, you write for a draft site. Sigh, it's okay, worse things could happen, like, I don't know, having no socks or something. Okay, next up we have Sayre, our resident draft guru on MHR, who came in tied for 2nd with ultraclassic and some Bleacher Report dude who I don't care about. So Sayre, keep it up, 2nd is better then last, so well done. The surprise winner of this review was Jeremy, none draft-dude of the site, who had one and only one mock, and he tied with kimbertr. Now I don't think anyone was expecting this outcome, possibly not even styg, but hey, that's the draft for you people.

So there you have it. I really didn't do any mocks, mostly because I suck at them. I predicted Dareus a number of times, so I got screwed on my only guess. Either way, hope this was either entertaining or eye opening, depending on if you did well or not. Also, if you have a mock with a link that was either really good or really far off, I'd love it if you put it in the comments section.

Just a side note, I originally started this post as a league wide accountability for guys like Mayock or Mel Kiper Jr. But it turns out there is already a site that does it for you, so I'm not going to remake the wheel, and I used their formula for my table. The site is the Huddle Report, and it's pretty good if you want to see whose successful year in and year out. Dan Kadar, from Mocking the Draft, came in tied for 5th, and Sayre fared much better overall then he did for just the Broncos, ranking 24th out of the 121 draft gurus Huddle Report reviewed. A guy at the Dallas Morning News came in 1st, again, apparently more people need to read him, since 2007, he's been in the top 5 every time, and has the record for being most accurate over the whole period. Here are a few notables as well:

- Mayock (NFL Network): Tied for 10th best
- Kirwin (NFL Network): Tied for 21st
- Baldinger (NFL Network): Tied for 21st
- McShay (ESPN): Tied for 26th
- Kiper Jr. (ESPN): Tied for 26th
- Walter (Walter Football): Tied for 38th
- Brooks (NFL Network): Tied for 54th
- Lombardi (NFL Network): Tied for 62nd

Who did I get right, max?

A little nasty on defense would be nice.

Never mind.

I think I got credit for Mohamed. I also had Franklin right in my 2nd to last mock. Not very good though. I am excited for a new Denver defense under Fox though this year. it should be fun if it happens.

A little nasty on defense would be nice.

Yea, it was Mohamed

I would have loved to have done with every mock by everyone, but that would have been a nightmare to try and organize.

I know I'm not big time like these other mockers

I take my mocks to MTD cuz I like doing it for the entire league, but I got 2 right on my mock on MHR

If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.

Nice work with Moore and Mohamed though

by Topher Doll on May 15, 2011 1:14 PM MDT up reply actions

thanks

if you read it too, a lot of people were hating on it for the Moore pick. Fox said he wants to emphasize turnovers, especially in the secondary, and with Moore’s value there I had a feeling he was high on their list for that pick unless one of the top DT’s fell.

And thanks for compiling this, its cool to compare. Still, we all must remember after the top 5 picks this thing is a crap shoot, so just because one does better doesn’t make him smarter. I know that’s not the intention of this maxwell, just wanted to throw that tidbit out there

Agreed, a lot of this is luck

Which might be why someone who put a lot of time into draft research like Nick could end up with zero correct, it wasn’t for lack of effort.

Congrats Jer!!!

Ok guys, how do we all feel about Elway/Foxy/Xanders 1st draft together. I was a tad disheartened about not getting one DT, but when you’re looking at the 14th best DT as opposed to the 1st best FS, then it’s a no brainer at that point. I honestly feel that Von Miller might be the best player Denver has ever drafted at that position and when you really look at it, I’d rather have a freak like him than a really good DT (Dareus is no Suh/Sapp)! We got the 1st and 2nd ranked Safeties, the highest MLB on our board, an absolute mauler at RT/OG, two freakishly athletic TE’s and some much needed depth! Throw in Von Miller who might be the best player taken out of 15 drafts, and we have ourselves a winner!!!

Personally I like to grade mocks that are full 1st rounders instead of a whole draft

In my mock I got 2 players right for the broncos. Von Miller and Julius Thomas.

For the 1st round. I had 10/32 players go at the same pick i projected/ Player to team. 8 of those players went to the team I projected. 2 went in the right draft pick but a team traded up for them. I also had 16/32 pick right position wise.

To Compare

Mike Mayock had 10/32 players for at the player and teamprojected. 8 players to the right team, 2 players at the right pick but a team traded up for them. He also had 13/32 pick right position wise

Todd McShay had 6/32 player and team

Mel Kiper had 6/32 player to team

So my first round mock was better then both McShays and Kipers and about the same as Mayocks

by gnarlybroncodude on May 15, 2011 4:01 PM MDT reply actions

I could do that

But most people on MHR don’t do 1st round drafts, so the list would much shorter and really wouldn’t be useful. Also I’d love a link to your mock.

by Topher Doll on May 15, 2011 4:19 PM MDT up reply actions

I got 2 right in a mock I put in someone's post...

Von Miller all the way (if we traded back), but I didn’t think they would take him at #2. I suggested we draft Julius Jones or Virgil Green (so, make tha 3 taotal), but I had no idea we would take both. The other Lbs I had no idea about. Franklin? Still scratching my head over that one and just knew we were going after a DT/DG. Jeremy beal was picked by Jeremy Bolander and I did some research on him, but didn’t think we would draft him either because we Doom, Ayers, Hunter, and Veikune. Still confused? Me too.

by bfree2bronc on May 15, 2011 4:05 PM MDT reply actions

Good stuff

and actually, Jeremy is known for his knowledge about all facets of the game, and I personally feel he knows a lot more about the draft process than I do at this point. He is a genius, and could be in our war room. Lofty praise, I know, but I’m not sucking up. He knows his draft stuff.

Seeing Jeremy and Sayre near the top didn't surprise me in the least.

I am certain the amount of data Jeremy collected for this draft event could very well rival that of the lawyers working to prove the other side is lying in this lockout case. ;-)

Nice post. I like that Walter guy too, though he enjoys bashing our team a lot….unfortunately, he’s mostly being bluntly honest and I hate that he has been right to bash us. 2011 needs to put an end to that…

Jeremy is smart, no doubt about it

But he’s not known for his draft knowledge or time put into research, but I wouldn’t question him on football.

by Topher Doll on May 15, 2011 11:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Uh, er, um...what?

Jeremy knows more about the draft than anyone on this site. He was the one who compiled the scouting reports and made a mock big board of all of the players we brought in, remember? He definitely IS known for his knowledge of the draft, that’s for darn sure.

I'm saying he doesn't do mocks all the time

Or isn’t known by the MHR members as a draft guru. He doesn’t have countless mocks like you or Nick or swg777. Now it may be more obvious to the staffers, and while I’m no long time member, I’ll say Jeremy isn’t as well known as a draft guru, or doesn’t advertise it, as much as others. I have never questioned his ability.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

by Topher Doll on May 17, 2011 12:16 AM MDT up reply actions

To be fair...

I haven’t been doing as much draft stuff around MHR as I used to. In fact, that was mainly what I used to be known for, but the last two years, and this year especially, I have been focusing mostly on keeping the database up to date, behind the scenes. 2009 was the last year that I really covered the draft intensely on the site, putting up 200 original scouting profiles, and watching so many games that I swear I was seeing players in my sleep. I was offered a job scouting the WAC that same year, and after several months of sort of getting into the swing of things I realized that scouting was something fun for me only when I could scout my way, on my own time. I have a great job and a wonderful life, and it was clear that I was going to be starting at ground level if I went down that road. I said thanks but no thanks, and I don’t regret that decision. I made some good contacts at the time, and some have become close friends who I chat with about what they are seeing in the draft. They make a great resource for running my own scouting reports by them, and they are kind enough to supply me with ready made databases of things like combine data and bowlgame info. That alone has cut down on the amount of time I have had to spend compiling instead of watching.

Last year I knew I was going to be short on time, and I limited my activity to keeping the names database up to date (incoming players, etc.) and watching the top 100 or so players, but I had a trip planned for April, so I never really put any of my info out on the site. This year I knew early that I would be swamped, so I set up a very conservative schedule for watching the top 100 players, installed a “Bronco fit” system that I have been toying with for about 3 years, and focused exclusively on the Broncos and who they might be interested in. By the time Feb rolled around, this method lent itself naturally to the Cameo series that I ran this year, which was perhaps the easiest draft project that I have ever undertaken for MHR. I’m looking forward to fine tuning it for next year.

The one thing I would clarify about my draft “knowledge” is that I rely 100% on the experts when it comes to forecasting what other teams might do in the draft. I have no clue at all about the other 31 teams and their needs, so I have a deep respect and appreciation for guys like Mayock, Kiper, Judge and others who stay abreast of all of that information. Without those guys’ work, a lot of us would be making very little headway in our own projects.

Here are some links to the general methods of madness that I use, Organizing, Getting set up, prospect analysis. There is also a whole series on MHR breaking down how to analyze games for players at each position. They are under the Scouting Services heading in the archives. These methods are a formalized version of my own trial and error system, and they have changed significantly over the past two years, although the core of a revolving database and extensive notes is still at the heart of it. By far the biggest improvement in my scouting has been learning about scheme specific traits and tendencies, which helps to establish context for projecting player success. Knowing the differences between Kaepernick’s system and Ponder’s is a huge element in their analysis. Identifying Von’s role in a larger scheme, or seeing Moore moved up to the line of scrimmage in 2010 after roaming like and Ed Reed in 2009 are hyper critical to the analysis that I really want to do for MHR, which is to find out who all fits what the Broncos want to do, and who we like most out of that group.

Having said that, I agree with everyone who is pointing out how much of a role luck plays in something like the rankings you have provided. For the most part the pros like Mayock and Kiper should be able to nail down about the first 10-15 picks in the draft, plus or minus 1-2 picks, but beyond that, the draft is simply to arbitrary and flexible to do much more than feel that you understand the vast majority of picks. I feel as Broncos fanatics our goal should be to excise all the nonessential considerations from the conversation, including personality fit, scheme fit, toolset fit, positional fit, roster fit, cap fit, etc. In the end, I would attribute my above grade in your Review to first hand player observations coupled with first class Broncos knowledge and understanding from this amazing community. Every so often I have to remind myself how lucky I am to be able to have a place to contribute something with so many like-minded wierdos. I remember when I first found MHR, I had no idea that anyone followed the draft as closely as I did, and was shocked to find out that not only was the information I had been compiling valuable to someone, but that there were people out there who were even crazier about this stuff than I was. In a way it was liberating. When Sayre came on board here, it was a similar relief. Here was a guy that could talk and cover draft stuff 24/7, had a ton of credibility, and a genuine enthusiasm for discovering potential. I was more than happy to slip into the background to watch my torrents and take my notes, knowing that the MHR faithful were getting more info than they could probably handle. I think MHR is really a safe haven and comfortable place for Broncos draftniks. I think they feel really, really at home here, and that is awesome!

Change your opinions, keep to your principles; change your leaves, keep intact your roots.

Nice mock

The biggest flaw was one you got caught in as well, DT in the 2nd round. People who drafted Miller at #2 almost always had at least one or two DTs in the 2nd round. Those who drafted Dareus actually had some of the more accurate drafts, because they used the mid round picks at other positions. So good work though.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

by Topher Doll on May 15, 2011 11:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Thanks

I definitely thought we could pick them up due to the major need at DT after not taking one in the first. I hope that EFX knows what they are doing by not drafting one and I can’t wait for the Lockout to get lifted so we have FA.

by DenverWonder on May 16, 2011 9:46 PM MDT up reply actions

I am surprised

I did spend a lot of time researching players and I was convinced the broncos would take Dareus with the first pick . For me to be up there at the top is just an accident a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while . I think EFX had a nice draft they just went a different route than I thought they would. With all the DTackles in the draft I thought they would take at least two and address linebacker heavy in the draft next year as there will be higher rated players at the position . But that just shows how much this old fan knows with this lockout at least the weather is good and I can now go for a nice putt on the old Harley to pass the time Go BRONCOS!!!!

I love stuff like this

It reminds us whose opinions to listen to, and whose to ignore ;)

For the sake of disclosure, I guess I should add myself to that group of who not to listen to. I did a Live Mock, so it’s mroe than one link, or I’d link it. I had just one pick correct through three rounds. But I did take an OT and I did move back into the first round for a DT like the management apparently wished they could. Still, just one pick in three rounds. Not good.

Nice shout out for the guy at Dallas Morning News, btw. The guy will be famous next year. It’s odd how unsung he’s been so far. He must have a stutter or something, else he’d be taking Mayock’s job already :)

Moore at 46

Green in the 7

Still a bad mock, because it also had Peterson, Austin, Matthews, Sands and Clay.

Speaking of mock drafts...

Are there any Defensive Tackles playing this year that might have a Nick Fairley type year? Looking over at Walterfootball.com, he has us picking 9th in ‘12 and I would respect that from what we have and will do…From what I’m seeing most of the DTs coming out next year are around 285-298…Not a lot of 300 plus guys there that I could find…
