Does Brady Quinn Still Deserve A Shot at QB with the Denver Broncos?

Quarterback controversies seem to be all the rage these days in the NFL, especially with teams like the Denver Broncos

Former Notre Dame standout and first-round-pick Brady Quinn left one dissension at the position behind in Cleveland after being shipped to Denver via trade for a sixth-round-selection in April’s draft, a 2012 conditional pick, and oh yeah, Peyton Hillis(Whoops?!)

On the "low-risk" trade last March, ESPN’s Bill Williamson stated, "Denver did not give up much for the former No. 1 pick…"

I’m sure Williamson would love to have those words back and Josh McDaniels still cries himself to sleep at night, but hey, you live and learn.  And while Quinn has found himself in some new Mile High mayhem, his future is much brighter than the first overall selection in that 2007 NFL Draft, JaMarcus Russell.

The once part-time Browns starter is currently listed on third on the official Denver Broncos’ depth chart.  With the current lockout in place, teams are unable to add or trade away players to help themselves improve.

For the Broncos, it appears they’re ready to go in a different direction and deal starter, Kyle Orton, whom was 11-17 under center in two years.

If recent media statements are true that the upper brass is not sold on Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow under center, then that leaves Quinn as the de facto starter for Denver.

Why make the case for an inaccurate and inmature border-line bust, who has failed to live up to the 2007 pre-draft hype?  You can thank the lack of talent and dysfunctional front office of the Cleveland Browns for making a case for Brady Quinn in Denver.

Ironic indeed.

While the 27-year old Dublin, Ohio native was originally projected as a top-five pick in 2007, he slid all the way down to No.22, only to be drafted by his boyhood team.  Quinn didn’t exactly endear himself to then coach, Romeo Crennel by holding out during training camp.  He would eventually sign a five-year deal worth $20.2 million, with performance incentives that would push the deal to $30 million if he took 70% of the snaps under center.

Fast forward to 2009, and enter new head coach, Eric Mangini. Quinn was the projected starter for Mangini during training camp, but would be yanked in favor of Derek Anderson after going 6-for-8 for a meager 34 yards and throwing an interception in a 34-3 rout at the hands of Baltimore.

Quinn would show some flashes of promise by having his best game as a pro, throwing for 304 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-37 loss to the winless Detroit Lions.

He finished the 2009 season in Cleveland by throwing for 1,339 yards, eight touchdowns , seven interceptions for a QB rating of 67.2 and completing only 53.1 percent of his passes.

The highlight of his career was leading the Browns to a 13-6 upset over the defending Super Bowl champion, Pittsburgh Steelers.  In that game, Quinn would go 6-of-19 for 90 yards.  Is it honestly fair to blame Quinn when he was the victim of a inept rookie offensive coordinator in Brian Daboll?  Quinn suffered from a lack of talent in the skill positions as the Browns traded Pro Bowl wide receiver Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets and tight end Kellen Winslow to Tampa Bay.

Starting running back, Jamal Lewis was on the wrong side of 30 and with the exception of Joshua Cribbs and Mike Furrey, Cleveland had two rookies at the wide receiver spot in Brian Robiskie and Mohammed Massaqoui.

Enter new Browns President, Mike Holmgren in 2010, as the aforementioned Quinn is traded to the Broncos.  Now in Denver, Quinn would boldly proclaim himself the starter over incumbent, Kyle Orton. Quinn would suffer more tough luck when Denver decides to draft Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow

Seemingly in the wrong place at the wrong time, Quinn had to sit on the bench and watch Orton throw for over 3,653 yards and 20 touchdowns.

He would also have to witness "Tebowmania" envelop Denver without getting a chance to step on the field.  While Denver seems to have a more competent front office in general manager, Brian Xanders, and Hall-of-Fame QB, John Elway as vice president of football operations running the show, it appears that Quinn’s tough luck from Cleveland followed him west.

The coach that traded for him, Josh McDaniels gets fired after leading the Broncos to a 4-12 season and the man he was traded for, Peyton Hillis rushes for over 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns, and lands the cover of Madden ’12 cover.

Now, it appears that Quinn may be on the move again—up the depth chart of quarterback.

With Denver shopping Orton around during the lockout and new head coach, John Fox hinting that Quinn has a shot at being the starter, Quinn will finally have a valid and fair chance to become a true starter in the NFL.

Unlike Cleveland, Denver has talent to surround and help Quinn in Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckwalter at running back and much better talent at wide receiver in NFL receiving yards leader, Brandon Lloyd, Eddie Royal, Jabar Gaffney and DeMaryius Thomas.

With the exception of San Diego, Quinn does not have to face two hard-hitting Super Bowl heavyweights in Pittsburgh and Baltimore in the division every year, either.

For all of Quinn’s critics, myself included, Quinn may have questionable arm strength and accuracy issues, but he was also the victim of constant upheaval and a weak supporting cast in Cleveland and would be a great fit in Denver based on being around better talent and a weaker division.

Those who choose to dismiss Quinn’s chances of being the starter for the Broncos, may soon come to realize that he is a legitimate dark horse in a two-way race.

Had to vote Tebow

I have come to believe Orton will be traded and I don’t believe Quinn can step up to start against the competition of Tebow. I need to add that this belief is merely the results of ongoing conversations here and I have a wait and see attitude towards our roster in general.
Who can really say what will happen until the NFL can start the next season. :/

Nice article on Quinn. I have been wanting to see more info and opinion on Brady for some time now and hope to see even more.

Sorry Robert, you lost me when you started reaching on things you purport as fact....

Making the reach that Quinn is the de facto starter is frankly wrong and fanciful, bordering on stupid.

Quinn has never had a fair shot

It was a joke what the browns did to the guy. I remember they’d start him for one week and than pull him, start Anderson, pull him, than put Quinn in. We thought Mcdainels did a bad job, but Romeo/Mangini did a real number on the browns. With a guy like Quinn, he should have been the starter from day one—he never was. Also it seemed like the guy always had a new o-cordinator every year. It was like watching Alex Smith. How many times did you see Peyton Manning get a new cordinator in his first years? You could even point to Rodgers as well. That wasn’t Quinns fault for not succeeding with the browns—or Alex Smith’s fault. These guys were victims of poor managment.

At this point, I think Quinn should just backup Tebow. He needs to build his confidence and know the playbook in and out. Backup QBs are just as valueable as startering QBs—look at the Steelers. If Orton were to be traded and Tebow would go down(worst case) at least Quinn could step in for a few games. Most of us still remember Orton going down in 09 and watching Simms play. I don’t think that happens with Quinn as the backup.

by tiderfootball09 on May 22, 2011 8:39 AM MDT reply actions

Quinn never had a fair shake....I agree with that....but him and Jimmy Clausen are 2 peas in a pod...

They were ND QB"s that succeeded in a watered down Pro-Style offense under Charlie Weis that hid their deficiencies: accuracy, and play against the blitz….. and they both still struggle with it mightily.
I am OK with Quinn as a back up, but as a starter it will give me fits!

Of cource he deserves a shot, he had one last season

And he’ll have one this season as well, but issue will be if he and Tebow are on the same level of play, Tebow will get the nod over him. So to get the job, he needs to just blow Tebow out in the competition. So yea, if he’s head and shoulders above the other QB’s, then he deserves it, but I don’t see that happening.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

Does this author even know one thing about the Broncos or NFL?

“Unlike Cleveland, Denver has talent to surround and help Quinn in Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckwalter at running back and much better talent at wide receiver in Eddie Royal, Jabar Gaffney and DeMaryius Thomas.”

How about Brandon Lloyd? When you write an article like you did above, try doing some research and thinking.

or how about the fact that the "talent" he is surrounded with is not that great?

Moreno has been a bust thus far and has not shown the skills required to be a franchise back or anything close to resembling one. Thomas while having immense potential is made of glass, one thing heals and he injures another. Eddie royal peaked in his rookie year and hasnt been the same since. Not exactly a solid supporting cast right there

That was definitely a strange analysis.

I thought the addition of Franklin was about the best we could do to improve the running game during the draft itself. RBs will be available in FA anyway. Weird article that was.

Good supporting words from John Elway

I took this from the article Boydy put in his fanshot

Elway confirms that Quinn is very much in the mix. "I’ve seen him in Cleveland," he said. "For young quarterbacks to be successful, they have to have that supporting cast around them. The supporting cast in Cleveland wasn’t what it will be here. I don’t know that Brady has ever had that. I don’t know that was given the opportunity to compete for the job when he came in last year. He’s going to be given a chance to see what he can do."

I don't really believe Quinn will be the starting QB when and if....

the 2011 season starts but….last season Orton had experience in McDaniel’s system over Quinn and Tebow and McDaniel wasn’t going to start a rookie (not even Tebow) and Orton had a year experience over Quinn.
If Tebow isn’t deemed ready to start yet and if Quinn is given a fair chance, he may be the starter next season.

I believe Quinn will get a "shot"

but that shot is significantly unlikely. I expect this to be a 2 horse race unless Orton’s traded, making it just Tebow

If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.

Quinn has been given a chance in games to develop, albeit a small chance.

He has 12 NFL starts in 4 years. He looked lost and indecisive in the preseason for the Broncos in 2010 – but McD ran a very complicated offense and BQ might have been overthinking.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/Q/QuinBr00/gamelog//
In his 12 starts he has 3 very good games – vs DEN in 08, at DET and vs SDG in 09. The other 9 games are very ugly statistically.
While at ND his main strength was his ability to go quickly through his progression and get the ball to the open man even if it was his 3rd or 4th option. That type of comfort within an offense is not going to be develop quickly in a complicated system.

He deserves a chance, but with more experience he has shown less NFL ability to play QB than TT – and of course neither TT nor BQ has produced results in the NFL comparable to KO.

by DE_BroncoFan on May 23, 2011 8:12 AM MDT reply actions

also regarding BQ

His college numbers were helped by the fact that he had an NFL caliber RB behind him in Darius Walker and three NFL quality receivers in Stovall (currently on TB), Samardzija (would have been drafted but chose baseball – currently pitching for the Cubs) and Fasano (currently the starting TE for MIA).

by DE_BroncoFan on May 23, 2011 8:22 AM MDT up reply actions

His accuracy was pretty bad in college though man, which does not translate well to the NFL.

You must be an aspiring writer?

Your writing is pretty well done, but the argument itself is full of holes and is based on a very flimsy premise, IMO. I’ll just leave my two main criticisms…

  • The overall thesis of this article seems to be that we should take seriously the idea of Brady Quinn starting in 2011. I don’t think it’s possible for that seed to take hold – it’s too outlandish.
  • You linked Bleacher Report as your source on two separate claims that essentially pin the Broncos down to trading Orton and being low enough on Tebow to have Quinn as the “de facto starter”. Your article/argument/thesis essentially sinks or swims on those two major claims, in that if we don’t buy into each of them, we’ll never buy into Quinn as being even a semi-likely starter.
Bleacher Report is a fan site, not a media site. So you were essentially saying, “a football fan said the Broncos might not be sold on Tebow, and another fan said they’re going to trade Orton. So therefore, believe me when I tell you, Brady Quinn is the de facto starter.” I think that’s immediate failure and probably a non-starter big enough for many readers to check out.

Brady Quinn may not have had support in Cleveland, but Jeff Smardijia would very likely be an elite wide reciever in this league

6’5 and runs a 4.5 40. Can stretch the Defense, has great size. He was the real deal. Quinn had an elite weapon in ND no doubt about it. Biggest thing was he was clutch, always made big plays at the right time.
