A Nostalgic Answer at RB

It's not really that nostalgic, but it may be an answer. Now that the draft is over we can look at our roster and all agree that we need a RB. DeAngelo Williams is the front runner since he has played for Fox before, but I get the feeling he may stay in Carolina or go to a contender. He may also require compensation to attain but we won't know til the CBA is signed. I know that there are other RBs out there but I want to talk about one that no one else has been talking about. A guy that suited up as a Bronco not that long ago....Selvin Young.

Star-divide

I'm pretty sure I don't have to remind anyone who Selvin Young is. He was once thought to be our RB of the future and a big reason we cut Travis Henry. He went undrafted but he managed to average 5.1 YAC on 201 attempts. Every since  Mc-Don't-know-what-I'm-doing cut him he has faded from the NFL and has been forgotten. Despite that he is only 27 years old and is a Free agent.

The real question is if he is still in Football shape. He hasn't taken the field since 08. He hasn't played in any CFL or UFL leagues so it is a legitimate question. But still, can't we agree it's worth a phone call? He was after all cut by the same guy who thought Peyton Hillis was useless. Sure he was a product of a system that also had Tatum Bell, Andre Hall, and Michael Pittman see success, but that system is back. Selvin Young might be a smart move by Elway. We have nothing to lose by calling him up. (after the lockout of course)

We should look at all options

this seems like a reasonable avenue to look at to me.

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.

Agreed

Not that Selvin should be Our first priority, but if options become limited, it could certainly be worse.

I think its pretty telling

that no one has touched him since we cut him. Maybe as a camp body, but I doubt he could even make our squad

You can never tell.

But Neither Moreno or White are healthy either.

"You can never tell."

That is the worst argument, you can say that about anyone but that doesn’t make it true. I can say: “You can never tell, Jarvis Moss might go to the HOF” but that doesn’t make it any more plausible at all.

Health has been a major concern for our RB’s, granted, but unless I’m mistaken Moreno should be 100% next season. We can use another RB, sure, but there will be a pretty decent crop of FA RB’s whenever this lockout ends, and I don’t think we need to settle on Young. There are plenty of guys who’ve played in the NFL after 2008 available, no need to settle

I agree with this.

Hard for me to believe that there won’t be better options out there, once a CBA is signed.

Nostalgia is a lousy reason to bring somebody in, for a team that has any desire to win.
An exception to that would be if you wanted to bring in a guy who was superstar quality, who you think has a little bit left in the tank, for some depth at the right price, as the Packers did with Ahman Green for one season two years ago, but, other than that…

Why?

He was a solid player for us. We have a legitimate need at RB and no stone should go untouched.

It’s a low risk High reward scenario.

has the guy even played since we cut him?

He is not any sort of answer IMO especially with all the proven potential in FA.

Tim Tebow wears 3WM and drinks Tuscan whole milk.

by BroncoMath101 on Jun 15, 2011 4:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Let me list the ways

1) He was one of the biggest benefactors of the remnants of our dominating zone-blocking system…personal talent-wise he doesn’t have it…if he did, someone else would have already had him playing on their team.

2) Working off that one…he hasn’t played in like 2 years…that will make his ability to make reads and have quick reactions quite stale.

3) The injury bug LOVES him. He left and didn’t come back because the disc in his neck wasn’t going to heal fast enough…the year before he had a groin injury for a big part of the year or something along those lines.

We need a legitimate need at RB which unfortunately doesn’t describe Selvin Young.

And the guy that signed him (Shanny)

doesn’t want him. He can keep Laurence Maroney company in the unemployment line.

There have been a few athletes who sat out a year or more

Came back with fresh legs and a new, meaner attitude and succeeded.
Off the top of my head I think of John Roche of the Nuggets, sat out two or three years to go to Law School and came back with Denver in the NBA.

I liked Young playing..

..but I liked, in the past time. Now it’s very unlikely that he is in form, and still can run well… we can’t always look to the past to find solutions, we must always look ahead and get some fresh air. We want to win Super Bowls again, but this is made looking forward and not backward. So Moreno is a good option, and we need a friend for him to make depth at RB position. Let’s think about fresh options…

I like Young a lot during his limited playing time

He showed great burst and fight. But in the present day, not so much. I’d invite him to camp, sure, but the likelihood of him making the team would be minimal since he has been out of practice for some time.

What we need to do...

…is find the next Arian Foster or Chris Ivory, not spend a lot of money on someone like DeAngelo Williams.
Or try to bring Selvin Young back. I liked him for the year he had, but that was a long time ago.

See everything. Overlook a great deal. Improve a little.

Selvin Young? that guy was never good in the first place.

I was thinking you’d suggest Clinton Portis, but you fooled me. Might as well wish for Orlandis Gary or Tatum Bell if you want Young back. It’s the same difference.

The Lockout bores me.

by McGeorge on Jun 16, 2011 7:36 AM MDT reply actions

Young was a step above Gary or Bell

He did put up decent numbers when he was able to get on the field…he’s just not a current solution.

Young’s best season had him running for 729 yards and 1 TD. He did have a great ypc at 5.2. Gary and Bell each cracked the 1,000 yard mark and Bell had two seasons what a ypc of above 5.2.

Young was no more special than either of those guys and neither of those guys were special.

TD was super special, Portis was special. Anderson was solid, but a drug user. The rest, including Moreno and Young, are dime a dozen RBs you can find in round 3 of every NFL draft.

The Lockout bores me.

by McGeorge on Jun 16, 2011 10:19 AM MDT up reply actions

I really hope you are wrong about...

Moreno. I am still holding out some hope, he needs to stay healthy. He did look very good at times last year.

I won’t be. Moreno is a 3rd round talent that plays like a 3rd rounder most Sundays. He only plays like a 1st rounder vs Kansas City.

Moreno doesn’t have the top end speed or open field moves to be an NFL star. He is decent, but that is his ceiling.

The Lockout bores me.

by McGeorge on Jun 19, 2011 8:15 AM MDT up reply actions

I thought about Portis.

but he will probably want to be on a contender. and will probably stop playing after he gets 10,000 yards.

Experience, still young, athletic, and we are deep at WR, something the Falcons might be interested in.

Falcons are equally deep at WR

if not deeper. I like Norwood from them, he’s an FA that they were hoping would compliment Turner but couldn’t stay healthy. I know with our RB corps another injury prone guy is the last thing we want but if he can stay healthy he could make a huge impact

Why not Tatum Bell for nostalgia?

At least he’s been playing football in the UFL and has better than average talent to exploit when his head is on straight.

by jaffe28 on Jun 16, 2011 12:41 PM MDT reply actions

maybe. He's 30 years old though.

Invite him to Camp anyway. he could surprise. Right now I hope we can sign Darren Evans and Graig Cooper. There are best bets from UDFA.

young not an answer

To me the Broncos need a stop gap player for this year . I think Ricky williams would be a great fit for next year and then get Trent Richardson in next years draft to go with Moreno . That way Denver would be set at the running back position for years barring injury .

If we're gonna go after one of our former backs...

how about Tatum Bell? The guy Is in shape and really wants to play… or maybe even Clinton Portis for situational downs? Either way, I’d take the previously mentioned two over Young any day. Overall though, I think they’ll be better options in FA/UDFA (whenever that may be).

Ummm, good article bud, but....

Selvin Young? Why him if I might ask? I know he was a Bronco, but he was injury prone, weak between the tackles and just an overall less than mediocre back. There a plenty of options, even in the college free agent pool, that are much, much better then Selvin Young. This is where I say why in the seven hells did we trade Peyton Hillis for Brady Quinn??? I’m sure some of you will find excuses as to why McD did it, but they are just that, excuses.
