5 Reasons Why the San Francisco 49ers Should Trade for Kyle Orton
This Bleacher Report piece is interesting mainly because it shows how someone who's not a Broncos fan sees Orton's abilities and deficiencies. While not sugarcoating his weakness (tendency to fall down from a puff of air) it describes him as a smart, savvy QB (who's gotten better every year) who's capable of mentoring a young QB while in the meantime being the missing piece of an otherwise ready-to-make-a-Superbowl-run team. He thinks Orton is well worth a second round pick, and thinks the 49ers could trade him in two or three years for a fourth round pick from a team that needs a mentor for THEIR shiny new QB.

But he does seem to mentor
The only problem with this strategy is that Orton, in my opinion, hasn’t shown any indication that he is a willing mentor. Not to Quinn, not to Tebow, not to Grossman, and not likely to alex smith. He is stroll trying to prove himself, not prove that he can help another guy take his job. I think he is a better fit in Minnesota.

I think he'll get the best chance to stay a starter past one year in AZ where they don't have high round QB pick waiting to take over.
If Orton wins the division with them they’ll extend his contract and keep him around. In Minnesota, San Fran or even Tenn. he’ll just be playing until their guy is ready to take over. Plus having Fitz will greatly help him transition.
Tim Tebow wears 3WM and drinks Tuscan whole milk.

a favorable destination
For us and them.
I like what Orton offers us in terms of accuracy and other things (but not his legs), but at some point we need to make a decision, and before he becomes a free agent is preferable. The bay area aint Buffalo, if you know what I mean. And a high to mid 2nd (guessing SF’s prospective draft position) is an attractive offer for a player who might be relegated to a 2nd string role in time (perhaps soon).

Nobody knows who our starting QB is going to be come regular season
Whoever starts is going to have to earn it, EFX has made that very clear. Starting QBs definitely get traded, even probowl starting QBs as we Bronco fans personally know. If Orton can beat out Tebow, awesome, because that means he is going to be playing extremely well and vice versa. Our QB situation is the best “problem” we have, both Orton and Tebow could start on many NFL teams, and Quinn might be able too as well depending on how far he has come since getting away from Cleveland. It’s going to be a good battle in TC. My guess is that Tebow comes out on top, not because he is handed the job, but because he earned it. We will start to see where the three are at when(if) TC comes and during preseason. I trust in our coaches to make the best decision for our team, I don’t see Fox as the type to hand the starter label to any player.
To be honest though, this season I am much more excited about our Defense versus the last few years where the Offense was the more exciting. There is going to be a lot that Allen can do with this defense, simple but tricky as he puts it. We are going to confuse the eff out of opposing offenses.

Orton is the starter Tebow has to beat him out Orton has to work to keep his job
This claim that whoever starts has to earn it as if Orton didnt earn it the last two years is pretty amusing its amazing how people simply ignore stuff like that .
Tim will get his shot to take the job just as he did last year but Orton is the starter and first on the depth chart .
Agree to disagree then. They have stated so many times that its going to be a competition. Nobody is the de facto starter.
Let me show you why, quotes from Elway:
“If we had to play today, Kyle Orton would be our starting quarterback.”
“If we had to go right now, but we’ve got to make a decision about where we’re going to go. In my mind we’ve got to figure what we’re going to do offensively at that position and that’s why I’m not guaranteeing anybody’s going to start.”
Both reported Feb 2nd
“I think where we are as an organization, we are going with Tim”
Reported May 2nd
Then Mortensen released this May 13th
This morning on ESPN Radio, Chris Mortensen said he’s been told by Denver Broncos VP of football operations John Elway and head coach John Fox that Brady Quinn has a chance to win the starting quarterback job along with Tim Tebow and Kyle Orton.
"I can tell you unequivocally that if you talk to John Elway and John Fox," Mortensen said on the "Mike & Mike in the Morning show. "They will tell you emphatically that Brady Quinn is absolutely in the mix in terms of the competition for the starting job. They are not handing it to Tim Tebow. They are not handing it to Kyle Orton. They may have a depth chart to start out, but I know in communicating and speaking to both men that Brady Quinn is not forgotten."
I think its pretty clear we don’t have a sure starter…
again where did I say he was being handed anything ?
If we are all on the same team and Im #1 on the depth chart and wast he starting qb last season and you are #2 well Im the starter until you take my job .
We went through this last year and I cant believe come and try and pull the same antics as if this stuff is some type of mystery.
It does not mean that Tebow or Quinn cannot win the job from Orton but as of now the job is Ortons to lose unless hes traded
“Kyle is going to have a leg up because of the success he has had, but we want everybody to have a chance to compete for that job,” said Elway, the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations. "When we go to camp, Kyle is going to be No. 1 on the depth chart when we go to camp. But Tebow, as well as Brady Quinn, are going to have an opportunity to compete for that job
As long as hes #1 he is the starting QB doesnt mean he cant lose the job though
No chance on the new contract
Given the lockout, it won’t shock me if Orton is the starter at the beginning of the season. However, he won’t stay that way, and under no circumstances do the Broncos give him an extension of any type. The trade will happen this season so the Broncos get something out of it, rather than just let him walk in FA next season. Come hell or high water, this is Orton last hurrah with the Broncos.
How about Frank Gore
for Kyle Orton and a 4th round draft pick?
