It would be much more useful in this post if we could discuss about free agency signs or the performance of our players on the training camp. Thank you lockout for don’t letting it to happen. Thanks God it seems to be almost over, so until there I think it’s beneficial to return again to our huge past.
First of all, I’d like to ask permission here to everybody in MHR (particularly John Bena, the author of the series) to participate on this incredible series of posts: The greats by the numbers. I also would like to thank you everybody who researched about our players of each number of our beloved Denver Broncos. You made fantastic posts! Always! Thank you for sharing this.
My post here isn’t even close of the job you had. My idea is to sort the greats of each number by positions. This way, this post can be used as a big summary of the series and make more clear the big scenario of the chosen guys. Thereafter, we can set who is the starting team of the greats of each number. I guess I’m in a phase of rescuing the past… I want to win some Super Bowls again… I want a feared team like the Orange Crush era… So it’s very hard for me to avoid writing some posts related to this.
The final result of the series brings us: 15 Halfbacks, 11 Linebackers, 10 Quarterbacks, 9 Defensive Tackles, 9 Safeties, 8 Wide Receivers, 7 Defensive Ends, 6 Tight Ends, 6 Cornerbacks, 5 Kickers, 5 Guards, 4 Offensive Tackles, 4 Centers and 1 Punter.
Let’s go to the table:
| OFFENSE (58) | DEFENSE (42) |
|
Quarterbacks (10): Halfbacks (15): Wide Receivers (8): Tight Ends (6): Offensive Tackles (4): Guards (5): Centers (4): Kickers (5): Punters (1): |
Defensive Tackles (9): Defensive Ends (7): Linebackers (11): Cornerbacks (6): Safeties (9): |
Now the funny part. To set my great starters of the greats by the numbers, I used a 2 split-backs formation for the offense and a common 4-3 defense. Here we go:
| OFFENSE | DEFENSE | ||
| QB | #7 John Elway | DT | #93 Trevor Pryce |
| RB | #44 Floyd Little | DT | #79 Barney Chavous |
| RB | #30 Terrell Davis | DE | #92 Elvis Dumervil |
| WR | #80 Rod Smith | DE | #96 Harald Hasselbach |
| WR | #25 Haven Moses | LB | #53 Randy Gradishar |
| TE | #84 Shannon Sharpe | LB | #57 Tom Jackson |
| LT | #65 Gary Zimmerman | LB | #77 Karl Mecklenburg |
| LG | #69 Mark Schlereth | CB | #24 Champ Bailey |
| C | #66 Tom Nalen | CB | #20 Louis Wright |
| RG | #54 Keith Bishop | FS | #27 Steve Atwater |
| RT | #76 Ken Lanier | SS | #49 Dennis Smith |
| K | #1 Jason Elam | P | #2 Mike Horan |
And about you friends from MHR, who are your great starters of the greats? Pretty easy, huh!? Any team chosen could easily win some Super Bowls at the current level of the game.
GO BRONCOS!
