I was recently reading, "Blood, Sweat, and Chalk" by Tim Layden, and got to the chapter about the 46 defense. Then I started looking at it and plugging in the Broncos defense, and they might actually be able to make it work.
Now I don't actually expect them to run this at all, especially with the lack of time to coach it to the players, and from what I know, No one on the team has actually ever run this style of defense. However this helps mask some of the issues in our defense, such as Dawkins lack of ability to cover, Robert Ayers not being a great DE. It also gives our best players the best chance to succeed. Here is a look at what the 46 looks like.
So if you are looking at it from the Defensive side of the ball (facing the offense), Bailey at LCB, Doom at LDE, DT's is still yet to be decided and that RE could be Ayers, with the MLB playing on the right of Ayers, and Von Miller at ROLB opposite Doom, Goodman at RCB, and FS could be Moore, or another ball hawk type FS, with SS Dawkins. and LOLB DJ Williams who would still be playing a MLB type position.
This brings Dawkins up to consistantly help with the run, and help the team with what he does best, which is big tackles and bone-crunching sacks. This formation also sets up Doom and Miller opposite one another on the outsides of the OL ready to create havoc. Ayers who is bigger would not have the pressure that was placed on him a few years ago, and can play a DT/DE type position, which is more of what he did in College, I think he could get a lot better playing a position like this. Bailey can handle himself on the left side, and Goodman would be able to have some help over the middles, with DJ, and who ever wins the MLB position, and Moore up top just in case.
Like I said, there is no chance they run this defense, but it would be cool to see, and it's so crazy it just might work!!
